FinalistBio
My name is Marisol Moreno, I'm currently a Freshman at Texas A&M University studying engineering. I would like to further my education in computer science and I aim to have an impactful career where I can make a difference, if only for a few lives, whether they be humans or plants. I'm passionate about conservation and preserving the great forests of our planet and I would like to pursue a career where coding and conservation overlap and intertwine. If I had it my way, I would spend my days strolling between the trees in the Pacific Northwest and spend my nights reading by a fireplace with a cat in my lap.

Coding for Conservation
The towering pines of Portland, Oregon, and the majestic redwoods of California – these natural wonders, immense and ancient, made a lasting impression on me. As a Texan, the grandeur of these trees stood in stark contrast to the landscapes I have grown up with. Time and time again, I found myself pondering the dense forests and their uncertain fate. Will they be ravaged by forest fires or transformed into someone's furniture? I yearned for a reality where they could be protected and appreciated for their intricate beauty, and perhaps serve as inspiration for another girl exploring the Pacific Northwest woods on a family vacation, in search of her own calling. These trips awakened a passion in me for the environment that has become intertwined with my enthusiasm for coding. This combination of interests holds the promise of a fulfilling career, one that enables me to make a meaningful impact on the environment through the transformative power of technology.
The convergence of my passion for coding and my newfound appreciation for the environment represents an alignment of purpose and potential. In coding, I see not only a tool for software creation, but also a means to develop solutions for the pressing environmental challenges of our time. From designing applications for real-time environmental monitoring to creating algorithms that support reforestation efforts, the opportunities are as vast and expansive as the forests that initially ignited my environmental fervor. The appeal of coding lies not only in its technical intricacies, but in its ability to amplify the impact of environmental initiatives. Through my pursuit of a computer science degree, I aspire to gain the skills necessary to bridge the gap between nature and technology. My objective is to contribute to the development of innovative solutions that address issues such as climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. Beyond the abstract realm of coding, my commitment to the environment is grounded in tangible actions. I envision a career where I actively collaborate with environmental organizations, leveraging my coding expertise to enhance their capabilities. Whether it involves developing applications that promote conservation awareness or creating data-driven tools for sustainable resource management, I want my coding skills to be a force for positive change.
The fusion of my passion for coding with a dedication to environmental conservation signifies not only a career choice, but a calling. In this unique combination, I see the potential to lead a professional life dedicated to making a meaningful impact on the world around me. As I embark on this journey, I am driven by the vision of a future where the beauty of nature and the power of technology coexist harmoniously, with coding serving as a bridge between the redwoods of California and the digital frontiers of innovation.

The towering pines of Portland, Oregon, and the majestic redwoods of California – these natural wonders, colossal and ancient, left an imprint in my mind that would not soon be forgotten. As a Texan, the sheer magnificence of these trees stood in stark contrast to the landscapes I've grown up with. Time and time again I found myself thinking of the dense forests and what they're fate would be. Are they burned to a crisp in forest fires? Or be used as someone's kitchen table? I wanted to find the version of reality where they could be protected and appreciated for their simple complex beauty and perhaps serve as inspiration for another girl, wandering the Pacific Northwest woods on vacation with her family, in search of her calling. These trips that I took awakened a passion for the environment that has become entwined with my excitement for coding. This fusion of interests holds the promise of a fulfilling career, one that allows me to make a meaningful impact on the environment through the transformative power of technology.
