My name is Marie, and I am a high school senior with a passion for neuroscience, medicine, and advocating for equitable healthcare access. Growing up in a bicultural household with roots in Japan and Guinea, I developed a deep appreciation for the intersection of culture and healthcare. Witnessing disparities in healthcare access, especially through my family’s experiences in Guinea, inspired me to pursue a career in Neuroscience on the pre-med track.
I am driven by my curiosity about the brain’s complexities and my commitment to addressing systemic inequities in healthcare. From taking advanced classes in Anatomy and Physiology to participating in the UMass Chan Medical School High School Health Careers Program, I have sought every opportunity to develop skills and knowledge to make a meaningful impact. Beyond academics, I am passionate about creating change—whether by building community initiatives or advocating for policies that improve access to medical resources.
With a goal to integrate neuroscience, medicine, and public policy, I aspire to become a physician who uplifts underserved communities and transforms lives. My determination, curiosity, and dedication to helping others make me a strong candidate for opportunities that will help me achieve these goals.

Christian E. Vines Scholarship
Although I never had the privilege of meeting Christian E. Vines, I can tell from the impact of this scholarship that he was someone whose dreams and ambitions could have changed the world. In the same spirit of ambition and determination, I am pursuing a career in Neuroscience and Medicine, where I aspire to bridge healthcare disparities and make a lasting impact on the lives of underserved populations.
My passion for neuroscience was ignited during a neurobiology class I took with a University of Chicago professor, where I explored the intricate workings of the brain. This experience deepened my curiosity about the human mind and solidified my desire to study Neural Science on the pre-med track. However, my journey is not just about unraveling the complexities of the brain; it is also about addressing the inequities that prevent individuals from accessing adequate healthcare.
Growing up in a bicultural household with roots in Japan and Guinea, I have witnessed the disparities that exist in global healthcare systems. My dad’s trips to Guinea, where he brings basic supplies like medication and clothing to those in need, opened my eyes to the stark realities faced by underserved communities. The loss of my grandparents due to missed diagnoses and lack of medical resources further fueled my determination to pursue a career where I can make a tangible difference.
Through my career, I hope to integrate neuroscience, medicine, and public policy to address both the biological and systemic barriers to healthcare. For example, I envision developing community health initiatives that leverage neuroscience to improve mental health awareness in marginalized communities. Additionally, I want to advocate for policies that prioritize equitable access to medical resources, ensuring that no one’s health is compromised due to socioeconomic factors.
While I am aware that my aspirations are ambitious, I have always embraced challenges with an open heart and mind. As a high school student, I sought opportunities to immerse myself in the world of healthcare and problem-solving. From participating in the High School Health Careers Program to diagnosing conditions in mock patients during my Anatomy and Physiology class, I gained valuable hands-on experience that prepared me for the rigorous journey ahead.
Looking to the future, I am excited to continue developing my skills and knowledge to address the pressing issues in healthcare. Whether it’s advancing treatments for neurological disorders, advocating for policy changes, or simply providing compassionate care to a patient, I am committed to making a meaningful impact. Christian’s legacy reminds me that our time is precious, and I am determined to use mine to uplift others and inspire change.
In conclusion, my career path is about more than just personal ambition—it’s about creating a world where health is not a privilege but a fundamental right. By pursuing a career in Neuroscience and Medicine, I aim to honor Christian’s memory and contribute to a brighter, more equitable future for all.
