Last summer, I participated in Google's Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI) before starting my first year as a computer science major at Loyola Marymount University. In this four-week intensive program, I participated in daily code alongs by either a Google engineer or an LMU faculty member, collaborated with my fellow peers in breakout rooms, and had time for independent practice to extend my projects. This program taught me more about coding in Javascript - which I had very little experience with -, expanded my interest in technology, and helped me meet and work with other incoming computer science majors at my university. During the last week of CSSI, we were all placed into groups and assigned to create a final project based on all of the things we had learned the last couple of weeks. While I worked on this project with a group, I was very passionate about the educational game we created. I collaborated with three other students to make a game called Spot the Animal to help young children improve their reading and animal recognition skills. In this two-player game, each member would have a certain amount of time to match the correct animal image to the random animal word. If the answer was correct, the player would hear that animal's sound and gain a point. I really enjoyed working on this project because I knew I was helping create something that would assist young children with various important skills; I also loved being able to improve and expand my programming knowledge. I have always known that an education is a very crucial part of a child's development and it is something that has helped me become the person I am today. Receiving an education not only helps a student know information about science, history, math, foreign languages, etc. but it allows students to develop effective listening, public speaking, and cooperative skills that are all extremely beneficial. I want to be able to help children all over the world receive a good education and understand the benefits of it, which is why I really enjoyed helping my peers program our Spot the Animal game. I initially became interested in studying computer science because technology is something that is continuously evolving in our world today and has applications for all aspects of life. While I am still not extremely sure what I want to do for my career, I know that I want to help other people around me, and I know that I can do that by using technology. In my future, I want to continue creating programs or applications that will help educate young children and shape them into great leaders. I hope to study more about artificial intelligence and use AI as a way to help those who are suffering or want to improve certain skills. I believe that I can use my skills and work in technology to help create a positive impact on the world today.
