I am currently pursuing my PsyD degree so that I can be a mental health professional and researcher. My ultimate goal is to provide community-based individual and group therapy and work in academia as a professor, so I can mentor students.
I also work in the biotechnology field as a manager of patient advocacy. In my role, I am responsible for advocating on behalf of rare disease patients and patient organizations so that my company can ensure the community perspective is incorporated in to both research and business decisions. I also perform patient experience research in order to better understand unmet needs and potential solutions within patient communities. The results of my research are then shared with patient advocacy organizations and my own organization so that we can collaboratively generate resources to address unmet needs.
Outside of my work and school, I love to spent time cultivating my creativity. I enjoy making rugs and textiles by hand, learning about digital art and illustration, reading all genres of books, and writing. I also teach and practice yoga regularly, which has been a wonderful source of friendship, spirituality, self-care, and community.

Eating a diet heavily composed of meat, dairy, and processed foods contributes to climate change, depletes natural resources, and harms biodiversity. I choose to shop at farmer’s markets and grow my own food when I can. I also aim to reduce food waste by regrowing vegetables, composting, avoiding foods packaged unsustainably, and making use of food scraps. When I invite others over for a dinner party, I ensure that I show them these small habits. Many of my friends have adopted them over time.
Transportation is an additional major contributor to environmental degradation. I try to walk, bike, and take public transportation wherever possible. Additionally, when voting, I look to support candidates and policies that focus on the improvement in quality and accessibility of public transportation so that this resource can be more heavily utilized by others in the future.
It's easy to be discouraged about climate change and think about all that one person cannot do. However, feeling defeated is not useful in fighting for the wellbeing of our planet. Empowerment through individual action and advocacy is useful, so that is how I choose to spend my energy. To complement my personal sustainable habits, I work to stay informed about policy, research, and current issues related to climate change. I seek to weave this information into conversation and interactions with others as much as possible so that they, too, may adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. The health of our climate is reliant on our action—on both individual and systemic levels.
Bold Financial Freedom Scholarship
The best piece of advice I received was related to a study that was later disproven. However, while the results of the study are no longer accurate, the sentiment stuck with me and has greatly effected my perspective on finances and my relationship with money. In 2010, a research economist determined that people's happiness, defined as emotional well-being, plateaued after earning $75,000 per year. Now, it's understood that there are several limitations to this study. First, inflation, region, and various other economic factors effect the actual value of $75,000. Additionally, emotional well-being is only one facet of happiness. Happiness is multidimensional and highly subjective; each person defines it differently.
When my father first told me about this research, and both of us understood it to be correct, he said to me, "All you really need is enough money to take care of your basic needs, plus a little to invest so you can retire later in life. After that baseline amount, the real wealth is in learning how not to commodify happiness." I had grown up in a wealthy suburb in California and my family was markedly poorer than the families of my friends. By ten years old, my primary motivation in school was to do well so I could get a high paying job and own a boat and vacation house like my friends' families. I thought this would make me happy. When my dad shared this sentiment with me, it caused me to reevaluate what I thought happiness meant, and how money related to happiness. I now know that my happiness does not depend on exorbitant amounts of money. As long as I have enough to keep myself safe and healthy and to invest a little for retirement, I can be happy--even without a boat or vacation home.
Bold Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
We internalize the messages we take in from the world around us--the messages that are blatant, such as those on advertisements, and those that are more subtle, such as the stories told to us in our favorite movies and TV shows. What we witness others encounter helps us to form our own ideas about what is "normal" and what is not. As a teenager struggling with my own mental health, I remember watching movies and reading books where characters were portrayed as crazy, undesirable, or shameful because they dealt with mental health issues. I felt embarrassed on their behalf and refused to identify with them because they were woven into the main characters' lives as people to pity or avoid, or their conditions were glamorized and inaccurately represented. If I had seen characters with whom I shared my mental health struggles who were truthfully portrayed, lifted up and supported by the characters in their world, and who learned to cope effectively, I might have been inspired rather than dismayed.
Increasing realistic representation of people with mental health conditions in the media is one method for helping people who struggle. They can develop more flexible senses of "normalcy" and increase empathy for themselves by empathizing with the people they identify with in books, movies, and TV. Additionally, if creators incorporate real methods of help and support for their characters, consumers may learn about what is available to them, too. By seeing people with whom we share something in common in the media we consume, we feel less alone. We can learn vicariously through their experiences. Advocating for better and more frequent representation of people with mental health conditions in the media can make a powerful impact on people struggling with their own mental health.
A Dog Changed My Life Scholarship
It's so special that we can look into our dog's eyes and feel human-like senses of recognition and connection. They're important family members who make us laugh, comfort us, and help us feel less lonely. My family has had two dogs, each of which have made truly lasting impressions on me. They've changed my life and my family's dynamics for the better.
My family's first dog was named Bella. My dad only let us get her because she was the cheapest dog in the newspaper and I had been begging for years. She quickly became an integral part of our family. She sat on the deck next to us while we watched the sunset each night, laid in the shade on the grass with us after yard work, and patrolled the kitchen for crumbs during meal time. She was beloved by each of us. My father, who was typically stoic, tough, and serious, had even developed a soft spot for her. He played with her, barked back at her, and acted so tender and sweet toward her.
When she passed away at age nine, it was the first time I saw my dad cry. We were both devastated by her loss; however, something about seeing my father let his guard down and let us see that he was upset helped him to feel more human to me. At that moment, our relationships became closer and I saw my dad not just as my father, but also my friend. We leaned on each other for support then and we still do. We continue to miss Bella dearly.
My family's second dog is named Jaxon, and we acquired him by accident. My younger brother, Alex, brought him home one night because his friend's mother had told him he couldn't keep the dog. At that time, my brother was suffering from serious drug abuse. My parents were at their wit's end and they didn't know what to do. Alex was at risk of not graduating high school, he was depressed and unmotivated, had few friends, and my parents didn't know how to help. He asked my parents if he could keep Jaxon and he promised he would take responsibility. My parents, thinking it could be a good lesson for him, agreed.
Alex's pathway to sobriety wasn't linear, and I can't give Jaxon all of the credit for getting him there, but Jaxon certainly helped. He was a companion for my brother during low times, he got my brother outside more for walks and playing, and he provided my brother with joy when it seemed like happiness was scarce. When I felt hopeless, I looked at Jaxon and was refilled with empathy and compassion for my brother. To me, Jaxon symbolized that Alex could get better. He represented hope. Now, Alex is three years sober and he still considers Jaxon his best friend. I feel so thankful that Jaxon is part of our family.
The canine members of our family have made invaluable contributions. I miss Bella every day, and I treasure every moment I get with Jaxon. For any dogs I'm lucky enough to have in the future, I look forward to the unexpected impacts they'll have on me and the people I love.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
When choosing which field to study for college, I hoped to avoid psychology at all cost. I was afraid of what the topic may expose about me or trigger within me because I was deeply guarded about my experiences with depression and eating disorders. In high school, my mental health conditions had cost me my friends and my reputation. I would not let the same thing happen in college. So, I chose to study physiology and prepare for medical school--a pathway that followed much more discrete and categorical methods, and something that didn't feel so close to home.
However, during my sophomore year, my "big sister" in my sorority, Ally, began to change. The stories she told me about her boyfriend her family were different. She started abusing prescription drugs that was prescribed based on lies she told to her healthcare providers. She told me about people I knew to be kind and honest who were manipulating and abusing her. She started calling me to come to the hospital after attempts to take her own life after fights with her partner or best friend. I was devastated and I could not figure out what was happening to her. During my junior year, she passed away from suicide. Her mother came to the memorial at my university and told me that Ally had borderline personality disorder. I had never known.
Again, a mental health condition had cost me a friend, but it wasn't my own condition this time. After Ally's death, I reflected on all the things I wished I had done differently. I wished I had recognized the signs and I wished I had known what to do about them. So, after graduating from college, I enrolled in a junior college class in psychopathology. I began to learn about the conditions that effected Ally and me. Ally's passing allowed me to approach psychology with compassion and openness because I now understood what it was like to love and feel empathy for a person with a mental health condition. I could start to apply that same sense of love and empathy for myself. I realized mental illness is not something to shut down or avoid because of shame; it's something to be validated and addressed so others don't meet the same end as Ally.
Soon after I completed the course in psychopathology, I discovered that my younger brother, Alex, was abusing substances. I vowed I would do everything in my power to help my brother get help, as I wished I could have done for Ally. I came to my parents with pages of resources about rehabilitation facilities and symptoms of substance abuse and withdrawal. To date, the hardest thing I've ever had to do is tell my parents that my brother was abusing drugs and needed help. At first they didn't believe me. No parent would want to believe this about their child. However, they started to recognize the signs and symptoms themselves. After a year-and-a-half of fighting, my parents finally got my brother to agree to seek help.
Alex enrolled in an inpatient rehabilitation program and my parents and I got help from our own therapists. Though the journey was devastating, draining, and long, my brother got sober and all of our relationships healed. I can't overstate the role of each of our therapists in helping us get to where we are now by reminding us of the love that was at the center of our anger, disappointment, and heartbreak. I continued going to therapy and finally properly addressed my own mental health, as well. Alex and I are now both in recovery--him from substance abuse, and me from depression and disordered eating.
After witnessing the power and importance of the therapists that supported my family's journey, I decided to pursue a career in psychology. I first obtained my M.A. in psychology, and I am now returning to obtain my doctorate in psychology (Psy.D.). Mental health is something that is so close to my heart. Now, every day when I read the literature or news about the latest discoveries in psychological science, I'm reminded of our stories--Ally's, Alex's, and mine. I'm thankful for my experiences with mental illness rather than resentful or shameful. My connection to the field of psychology allows me to feel deep, genuine empathy and compassion that I hope can be a tool for supporting the growth of my future patients.
My intention to help others reach good mental health is and always will be unswerving because it's personal. I've seen what mental health can look like when it goes both addressed and unaddressed. I've felt what it's like to suffer in a way that no one else can see. It seems outlandish that I used to avoid the topic of psychology because, now, I cannot wait to talk about it every day for the rest of my life.
Bold Goals Scholarship
Through my professional and educational endeavors, I have been exposed to people, projects, and experiences that inspire continuous growth and expansion of my goals. I began my master's program in psychology with the goal of providing psychotherapy to others so I could help them to find meaning and joy in their lives no matter what their circumstances. However, as I gained exposure to professionals working with psychology in ways I had never imagined, I began to think outside of the box.
During my master's program, I worked in patient advocacy in the biotechnology space. I found myself developing new professional goals for myself based on my academic experiences. I began to recognize the unmet psychological needs of the rare disease patient populations I worked with, which led me to develop a new goal: as a therapist, I'd like to specialize in health psychology so I can help individuals affected by rare disease to cope and learn to thrive, and support their loved ones who are also affected. One patient said to me, "Your disease is never just your own."
As I began to work toward this goal and raise awareness of the psychosocial needs within rare disease communities, I realized that I love to advocate to and teach others about both psychology and rare diseases. Thus, my goals further developed: I'd like to also become a professor, perform research, and write academically. This fall, I will begin my doctorate in psychology so I can do just this. It's my goal to be a pioneer in the field so my work can benefit patients, their families, and my colleagues both in psychology and biotechnology. However, I'll maintain an open mind and know that, as I become exposed to additional sources of inspiration, my goals will continue to grow.
Bold Longevity Scholarship
In order to live a long, healthy life, a person must cultivate a sense of meaning. The source of this meaning can be anything--from professional accomplishments, to relationships with family, to exploring the world. However, deriving fulfillment from one's life experiences and having something valuable to continue to look forward to or reflect back on is essential.
When someone lacks a sense of meaning, they are not motivated to engage in the types of behaviors that lead to a long, healthy life such as taking care of themselves with exercise and proper nutrition. They are more likely to experience sadness and stress, which can result in detrimental physiological effects on the body. If a person is to live a long, healthy life, they must find something to live for.
When a person enjoys their life, looks forward to future experiences, and is able to reflect on their past experiences with a sense of pride and healthy introspection, they will be motivated to preserve their good health and continue living. Studies have shown that people who are happier live longer. Thus, finding ways to feel fulfillment and belonging are essential to cultivating a long, healthy life.
Bold Self-Care Scholarship
Too often, self-care is commodified, glamorized, and treated as a chore. There are two forms of self-care that are essential for my lifestyle: the type of self-care that forces me to ask important questions and think intentionally so I can best serve myself, and the type of self-care that allows me to completely shut off my thinking mind so I can feel joy, peace, and presence.
I consider therapy, journaling, and critically thinking about my life circumstances in a productive way to be self-care. As someone who lives with depression and anxiety, it's become very important to me to engage in these processes so that I can audit my thought patterns. This helps me to ensure that my mental health is preserved and strengthened. It helps to absolve stresses related to cognitive dissonance or not living in accordance with my values. And, it helps me to understand what my true needs are in any given moment.
I also consider activities like listening to audiobooks, reading, doing yoga, and engaging in my artistic hobbies like ceramics and tufting to be self-care. These activities allow me to experience creativity, flow, and inspiration. I am able to turn the volume of my own thoughts down and listen to the world around me, the voice of another, or nothing at all. My focus goes outside of myself and I'm reminded that I don't need to take myself so seriously.
These two types of self-care are very different in execution and intention, but they're both pivotal in helping me to stay passionate, energetic, and focused in my personal, professional, and academic endeavors.
Bold Relaxation Scholarship
Rest is not something you earn; rest is something you deserve not because you work hard, but because you are a human being with needs. We put a great deal of pressure on ourselves to spend every waking moment of the day productively--even our "down time" can become a to-do list: take off makeup, multi-step skincare routine, read 10 pages, stretch for 15 minutes, and so on. In order to truly benefit from the rest we give ourselves, it can't feel like a chore and we can't be focused on the completion of it. Instead, the best rest we can get is when we're fully present with whatever activity we're doing, even if it's just laying on the couch staring at the ceiling.
I make a concerted effort to be fully grounded and present with each moment of rest. In this way, I turn each act of rest into a sort of meditation. When I take a bubble bath, I focus on the warmth of the water on my skin and the smell of soap. When I go to therapy to care for my mental health, I pay attention to the way I feel as I discuss different parts of my life, and even how it feels to pay attention to this. When I do yoga to care for my body, I devote my awareness to the sensations in my body and how they change as I move and breathe. I try to remain fully absorbed in the process of rest and care for myself so that my experience is not tainted by anxiety about the future, rumination on the past, or eagerness for the activity to be over. In developing this practice, I've found rest to be a great deal more restful.
I Am Third Scholarship
My personal and professional goal in life is to combat the barriers that people face in reaching good mental health. I may not be able to change the adversity that others face or the conditions of their lives, but I can make an impact on the way they relate to their experiences. I plan to do this as a future therapist.
When I was an undergraduate student, I wanted to become a doctor so I could help people be happier and healthier. However, the more experience I obtained, the more I came to understand that it's not people's situation that is the greatest predictor of their happiness and wellness; rather, it's the way they relate to their situation. This relationship is dependent on their thought processes, disposition, support system, and knowledge of resources.
Furthermore, mental health is a factor that goes unattended far too often. In college, the catalyst for my change in passion from medicine to mental health was the death of my good friend, Ally. She saw doctor after doctor and was prescribed a myriad of medications for a collection of symptoms, but she was never referred to or treated by a mental health professional. She was posthumously diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. After Ally's passing, I vowed to never be in a position again where I didn't know how to help someone like Ally. Thus, I pursued my Master's degree in psychology.
In my current role as a manager of patient advocacy, I work closely with individuals who have rare diseases. I connect them with helpful resources to learn about their condition and become a part of a community. I also speak with them about their experiences as a patient so that I can discover what their unmet needs are, and deliver this information to advocacy organizations and doctors so these unmet needs can be addressed. One glaring unmet need is in mental health. Living with a rare disease takes a massive toll on one's mental health. It is isolating, confusing, and chronically stressful. Most coordinated care teams lack psychologists or social workers, and very few mental health professionals are trained in how to treat rare disease patients.
Receiving care for one's mental health is not only pivotal, it's also very difficult due to barriers such as insurance limitations, privacy concerns, lack of clarity around how to find a therapist that meets one's needs, and lifestyle factors like scheduling around one's work calendar. In my professional career as a future doctor of clinical psychology, I plan to address this by providing services at a sliding scale rate, offering group therapy after hours, offering teletherapy, and acting as an activist and advocate. I hope to work alongside patient organizations to influence policy that receiving good mental healthcare is more accessible for everyone. I am on a mission to better the lives of those around me. The best way I can think to do so is acting in a way that enables them to feel supported, heard, and understood.
If my mission is successful, the lives of all those I work with will be touched in a way that allows them to go out into the world and do good in turn. Policies will shift so that more people can receive mental health services. Finally, fewer people will meet the same end as Ally.
Bold Science Matters Scholarship
My favorite scientific discovery was the uncovering of a behavior called "mirroring." Mirroring is the process by which one person begins to mimic the gestures, speech, or attitude of another person--most times, without their own awareness. This is my favorite scientific discovery because it can be utilized in a variety of ways to help people. For example, in my current position in patient advocacy, I speak with a lot of patients about very difficult and vulnerable experiences. So, when such topics arise, I make an effort to have very intentional body language, gestures, and attitudes. I breathe slowly, and sometimes let out a sigh. I fix my face into a clearly empathetic expression. I also do my best to remain grounded and calm, so that the person I'm speaking with will pick up on these behaviors and begin to feel a sense of ease as well. I notice that the breathing I do is what patients most often pick up on. When I let out a sigh, they frequently let one out subsequently, and then continue in a way that indicates they are feeling a bit calmer.
I also remain cognizant of mirroring in the opposite way--the way it may effect me. When I am working with people, I am aware of their verbal and nonverbal language. If they are acting standoffish or cold, I do my best not to let myself mirror that behavior. I effortfully keep my posture open and my tone of voice warm. This has often helped to encourage the person to open up themselves and begin to treat me with a more positive regard.
Mirroring is such a fascinating phenomenon, and it can be useful in a variety of ways, especially for those of us in science who frequently work with other people.
Bold Joy Scholarship
The two primary sources of joy in my life are that which I derive from deep interpersonal relationships, and which I experience vicariously through others. When I experience joy, I feel awe that we can experience such a thing. I am reminded of how remarkable it is to be human with a broad spectrum of emotions that allow us to feel our humanity.
Humans are social animals, and many of us derive happiness from feeling heard, understood, and accepted. While this may be broadly true, other individual experiences are unique—no two people have the same stories, attitudes, and attributes.
As a patient advocate, I have the privilege of learning about people’s stories, many of which are vulnerable. When the rare disease patients I work with tell me that they felt heard and understood by me, it's the greatest source of joy I could imagine. It's an immense gift to be trusted by another and it makes me elated that I can help another person by listening and holding space. I feel similarly when I witness my friends and family experience things that make them feel joy—like becoming parents, singing and dancing to music, or being recognized for their hard work. It makes me deeply grateful to take up space in their lives, and for them to be in mine.
I seek this joy out by making time for my friends, family and the patients I work with, practicing presence in their company, asking questions, and listening to the answers. These relationships are a constant source of gratitude and joy. This is the ultimately the reason I hope to pursue a career in clinical psychology. In this role, I’ll be able to sit alongside my clients while they experience the broad range of human experiences—some of which will be joyful.
Bold Helping Others Scholarship
The greatest gift that I've been able to provide others is helping them to feel truly heard and understood. By listening actively and empathetically, being present and nonjudgmental, and helping others to find language to communicate their experiences, I feel that I can truly make a difference for others. It's a true honor to be trusted with another person's stories and thoughts. Many people want to share these things with others, but are afraid of being met with judgment or rejection. When others feel safe around me, and when they tell me that talking to me helps them, I feel truly fulfilled.
Not only is it meaningful for me, I also truly enjoy it. I find the people around me fascinating. All of us are so different from one another, and I am continuously inspired in new ways. I learn so much from the people I speak with about love, resilience, and generosity. I hear stories about travel, family, and lines of work I never knew existed. I learn about different areas of culture, science, literature, and art. Listening is a never-ending source of learning, and people are a source of hope. Thus, listening to others is not only beneficial for them in helping them feel seen and heard, it's also beneficial for me.

In my current position, I work alongside rare disease patients. I learn about their journeys with their condition and I listen to their stories, which is the greatest honor. When I asked one man why he dedicates so much of his time to his work when he knew he had a rare and fatal disease, he responded, "You don't die in your bed with your socks on. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and die doing something." This was incredibly inspiring to me.
It's very difficult to talk to patients about the nature of their diseases. Within the disease areas I work, there are no existing curative treatments. There are treatments that can alleviate the burden of symptoms, and there are treatments that may slow the progression of the disease. However, patients know that, ultimately, they will die due to their condition. The gentleman I spoke with who shared this sentiment with me was able to talk about this disappointing truth; but, he always brought it back to the work he did. He owns a consulting business and helps hospitals to become more efficient operations so they ultimately can do a better job of saving people's lives.
Even though this man's life couldn't be saved, he refused to give up on his mission saving others' lives. I think about this each time I feel discouraged or disappointed. No matter how long my life is, what I look like, or where I take residence, I can do something to help other people. Even when it's hard, or when there are barriers in the way, I won't give up on my personal mission to help others achieve good mental health as a future therapist. I won't die in my bed with my socks on. I'll die doing something.
Bold Hope for the Future Scholarship
I have hope because I seek out good news. Often times, we lose hope because the headlines we see highlight current events that are dangerous or disappointing. However, if we seek out things that are going on in the world that don't necessarily make headlines in big media outlets, we can see that the world is full of reasons to believe the future will be better.
One way I look for good news is by staying up to date on research addressing climate change and alternative energy and new advances in medicine and treatment. There are many people across the globe who devote their time, intellect, energy, and funds to finding ways to solve these problems. We may not have yet have the ultimate answer to big questions such as, "Can we reverse the damage we've done to the Earth?" and "Is there a way to prevent cancer altogether?" However, the very fact that there are so many people who remain persistent and resolute in their mission to answer these questions gives me hope that it will one day be possible to do so.
Additionally, I pay attention and make an effort to be present in everyday life. When I'm present for small moments, I see goodness in the world around me, and this gives me hope. For example, I was driving to work the other day and was stopped at a stoplight in my neighborhood. To my right, a little girl about three years old in a bright pink puffy jacket was standing at the front door of her house with her arms spread wide and a big smile on her face. She called out a name and a small, fluffy puppy bounded up the stairs and leapt into her arms. I smiled in response to their shared happiness and excitement. When I see moments like this, I feel hope that there are good people, love is a worthwhile pursuit, and we, as a species, are creative and resilient enough to fight for our own wellbeing.
