Bio

The name Makena is a Hawaiian name and means “the happy one”. I believe that my name describes my personality perfectly because I am happy to serve, happy to help and happy to lead even in the face of adversity. My name is Makena Silva and I'm 18 years old. My dream career is to become a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in Child and Adolescent Psychology. I'm an only child to a low-income single parent who is currently battling Inflammatory Breast Cancer. I'm currently a freshman in college attending Texas State University and I will graduate in May of 2028. My biggest accomplishment was completing my Girl Scout Gold Award where I taught students the basics of sewing and then we collectively created and donated over 300 head wraps to cancer patients in the Rio Grande Valley. I dedicated this award to my grandmother who passed away from cancer and my mother who is currently undergoing cancer treatment. MD Anderson is currently our home away from home as we travel over 300 miles to and from Houston for treatment every three weeks. We have spent extended lengths of time in Houston - once for 2 weeks for my mom's radical mastectomy and another for 6 weeks while she underwent twice a day radiation. This has been an emotional challenge while taking college classes and a financial challenge while trying to plan for college funding. I'm excited to attend college and can't wait to see what the future holds for me! “Courage is taking those first steps to your dream, even if you can't see the path ahead." https://www.facebook.com/wrappedinlovegoldaward

    John J Costonis Scholarship
I am Makena Silva, an only child raised in a low-income, single-parent household, and my heart is set on a career in psychology, specifically as a Child Psychologist. My journey through education has been marked not only by dedication and ambition but also by significant challenges that have tested my resilience and determination. The pivotal moment in my life came during the summer before my junior year of high school when my mother was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer - Inflammatory Breast Cancer. This diagnosis shook our world to its core, and the subsequent intense treatment regimen demanded immense strength and determination from both my mother and myself. Despite grappling with her own battles, my mother continued to emphasize the importance of education, instilling in me the belief that knowledge is not just power but also a beacon of hope even in the darkest of times. As my mother faced the hardships of her illness, I found myself taking on new responsibilities as her caregiver. Our bond, already strong, deepened as I provided emotional support, attended countless medical appointments, and assisted with daily tasks. This newfound role required resilience and adaptability, qualities I had to cultivate rapidly to navigate the challenges we faced together. One of the most daunting challenges during this time was the financial strain on our family. The costs associated with medical treatment, medications, and related expenses began to accumulate, casting a shadow over my aspirations for higher education. We faced a difficult decision: should I pursue my dream of attending college, potentially jeopardizing the resources necessary for my mother's recovery, or prioritize her health at the expense of my own educational ambitions? This is where the scholarship opportunity becomes paramount. Receiving this scholarship would not only alleviate the financial burden on our family but also provide me with the means to continue my higher education without sacrificing the support and care my mother needs during her recovery. It represents a beacon of hope amidst uncertainty, a lifeline that can propel me forward towards my goals while ensuring that my mother's well-being remains a top priority. Throughout these trying times, my commitment to academic excellence never wavered. I successfully graduated Summa Cum Laude from my high school, a testament to my dedication to excellence despite the challenges I faced. The Girl Scout Gold Award I received further solidified my resolve to excel, reaffirming my belief in the transformative power of education. As I step into this next chapter of my academic journey, I do so with a profound sense of responsibility. I recognize the significance of my role as my mother's caregiver and the importance of being by her side, providing the support and love she deserves during this challenging time. With this scholarship, I can strike a balance between my educational aspirations and my responsibilities at home, ensuring that I can be a source of strength for my mother while continuing to pursue my dreams. In summary, my motivation to succeed stems from a strong desire to make my mother proud, which is at the center of my motivation. The uncertainties of the past few years, particularly as my mother bravely battles breast cancer, has only intensified my determination to succeed. This scholarship represents not just a financial aid opportunity, but a chance to honor my mother's sacrifices and continue my pursuit of academic excellence. It is a testament to the power of resilience, hope, and the unwavering belief that education can transform lives, even in the face of adversity.
