FinalistBio
My name is Maia Beaulieu, and I am a student activist, advocate, and ally.
Who is Maia?
I am passionate about music, learning new things, and sharing my passions with others. I am all about getting uncomfortable and trying new things to grow as a person. I love to read, mountain bike, and create music. Above all, I value human connection, as I am a firm believer that 'it takes a village' to live life.
Current Academic Interests:
I love biological sciences, computer science, and math - in fact, I spent my summer taking Calculus 3 at my local college.
Future Aspirations:
I hope to apply computer science and engineering to medicine, specifically oncology. I believe that my generation is powerful, and together we can cure cancer. I will do my part as a future pediatric oncologist/research-physician to change the world. Additionally, I will continue my work as an activist to ensure equity and equal access for both patients and medical physicians.
How am I sparking change?
-Empowering women in STEM. I founded a coding club for elementary school-aged girls of all socioeconomic statuses.
-I am currently working on an independent research project focusing on applying a new technology (which I cannot yet disclose) to medical diagnostics.
-I am a member of a student-led activist group. Together, we have successfully urged our school board to reaffirm their inclusivity and improve our education to be non-racist and represent all students. We have had many successes, but we will keep working until we can achieve equity for all genders, races, orientations, and identities.

MusicI compose music on the piano, for small ensembles, as well as full orchestras. This matters to me because music is a way to connect with people on a deeper level and tell a story without using words. It can bring people together regardless of languages spoken and their beliefs, as all that's required is to feel the message of the music.2018 – 2020National Music Educators Association

In May of 2019, I suffered a concussion, partially tore my shoulder, and broke my jaw into five pieces (3 displaced fractures, 1 compound fracture, and 2 minor fractures) due to a mountain biking crash. The recovery process was long: It included two surgeries, countless root canals, and 2 months of my mouth being wired shut. I struggled for months with disturbing flashbacks and debilitating anxiety. Months later, I decided that it was time to ride again. It was absolutely terrifying, but I was able to go back and ride over the spot where I crashed and conquer my fears.
