Since I was in middle school, I knew my future career would be to become a veterinarian. This whole idea started when my childhood dog got sick, we took her to the vet and they were able to help her. Since that moment, I knew that is what I wanted to do. Help animals to live full lives and to help the owners make their companions as healthy as possible as well. Since then I've worked hard to obtain top grades and applied to some colleges with great veterinarian programs. During my high school career, I worked part time at a veterinary hospital to understand what goes on behind the scenes and finalize my decision that being a vet was what I wanted to do. During my time at the hospital, I got to help out and observe the doctors and technicians. I was able to watch surgeries, administer vaccines, and overall help out. Unfortunately, the other side of veterinary medicine involves the euthanasia patients. However, even with seeing the bad side, I am still determined to become a vet. Working at the hospital influenced my career ambitions even further, because there I decided that I did not simply want to work at an animal hospital, but I wanted to start my own practice. Real experience working with veterinarians however, is only half of the battle to becoming a vet. During high school, I pushed myself above and beyond in my academic career to further my opportunities. I have taken and passed in Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. My junior and senior year, I was taking the full diploma program of IB and achieved this honor with my exam results. This program not only was academic based, but volunteer based as well. Along with two other classmates, we raised over one thousand dollars for Duke brain cancer research. With receiving the IB diploma, I am able to already have obtained a semester worth of college credits to further my college education. This was not easy however, as I was discouraged many times from completing this program from my advisors. However I persevered and completed the program obtaining credits. As for my future, I am planning on attending Virginia Tech on an animal sciences major on a pre-vet track, and minoring in Spanish. Virginia Tech has a great vet program and I hope to continue my academic career in a way that is beneficial and worthwhile. My working experience at an animal hospital and academic career has influenced my career ambitions and I hope to achieve my goal of being a doctor in veterinary medicine and starting my own practice. I am passionate about the degree I am pursuing because of my own experiences with working in an animal hospital and I want to succeed at doing a job that is both beneficial and will have a sense of accomplishment in the work I will be doing. I hope to be able to help others with their animal companions and help the pets live their best lives for themselves, and their owners. I am passionate about this because I love animals, I love my animals, and I want what is best for them and to help others with what is best for their animals.

My greatest achievement is being awarded with the international baccalaureate diploma. This IB diploma program is a two-year comprehensive and rigorous pre-university curriculum leading to an IB diploma. The IB Diploma is internationally recognized. It's offered by around 150 countries globally and recognized by colleges and universities from almost 90 countries. An IB education is unique because of its rigorous academic and personal standards. IB programs challenge students to excel not only in their studies but also in their personal growth. The IB aims to inspire a lifelong quest for learning hallmarked by enthusiasm and empathy. Therefore, achieving this IB diploma has been my greatest achievement. This experience has taught me to stay vigilant, manage my time, and how to excel at my school work. When I began this program, I was told not to by my counselors and the previous coordinator. However, despite the discouragement, I persevered and worked diligently to maintain good grades and scores. Now, two years later, all the hard work has paid off and I was awarded with the diploma. Not only was this journey academic based, but it was also volunteer dependent. Along with my school assignments, research projects, and other club responsibilities, I also have had to volunteer for many organizations in my community to achieve this accomplishment. Along with two other classmates, we raised over one thousand dollars for Duke brain cancer research. With receiving the IB diploma, I am able to already have obtained a semester worth of college credits to further my college education. Advanced courses in high school such as, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Dual Enrollment, aims for students to engage in more rigorous classes while earning credits that will help in future studies. These programs not only offer students more difficult classes and help the student grow academically, but they also help the student grow personally in life outside of the classroom. In my personal experience with AP and IB, I believe that these courses have allowed me to learn not only the material for the class, but also skills for life and for college. Another major contributor to the excellence of these programs is the teachers. They cover the content while explaining in the real world importance of these subjects creating open minded students. While participating in the IB program, I believe that it has prepared me to be hard working in my future studies in college. Along with preparing me to be open-minded and nice towards others and opportunities. IB students often perform better and prioritize learning, making the class environment competitive, but also academically engaging. With help from the teachers, IB students develop strong academic, social and emotional characteristics. The IB program gives students a competitive edge to learning, while also learning how to work hard independently and collaboratively. Students that are involved in the IB program ultimately perform better when they are studying in university and when they graduate from university. That is why I believe that this program has helped prepare me extensively for studying in college and for life after college. However, due to my intended major, animal sciences on a veterinary track, the only option for college was to go out of state. This was the only option to get the best education for my intended degree because there is no veterinary program in South Carolina. However, it is also more expensive to go out of state for college and a heavier financial burden. Therefore, due to my financial circumstances, if I want to get a quality education, I will have to take out numerous student loans, constantly work, and be in debt because of out of state tuition. That is why this scholarship would be very beneficial and helpful for me to be able to achieve a quality higher education. Thanks to the IB program, I believe that I could be hard working in future studies and be nice and open minded.
