Ever since reading Dr. Ben Carson’s Gifted Hands at age 8 and becoming fascinated with the subject matter, I have pursued my keen interest in neuroscience in a variety of ways. Under the guidance of Dr. Jeffrey Cummings, founder of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, and the institution’s former Senior Director of Clinical Research, Dr. Kate Zhong, I started to author my now-published book, Read This Book and Save Your Brain (A Book About Alzheimer’s for Tweens and Teens). With the publication of this book early on in my freshman year, I was able to both further my interest in neuroscience and present crucial preventative strategies against Alzheimer’s in a format more tailored to younger individuals. In May of 2020, I founded a Montgomery County-based, youth-led mental health organization called Serotonin Says. Over the course of two years, I recruited and worked with more than 30 other teens to promote mental health advocacy through various media, including a website, podcast, monthly themed newsletter, and an Instagram page. Mental health has continued to be at the forefront of my interests, as I have continued to participate in research in biomedical facilities. My goal in life is to contribute to the field of mental health in a clinical and/or research setting, as I truly believe that it is one of the most pressing fields today with our growing mental health epidemic.
