Kynnedy Simone 'I Am The Dream' Scholarship
Throughout high school, I have been a member of Jack and Jill, which is an organization dedicated to developing tomorrow's leaders. I have held leadership roles in my chapter. I currently serve as my chapter's treasurer. In addition to regular meetings, we have various programs throughout the year, including events aimed at our educational and professional development, as well as community service projects.
For example, through Jack and Jill, I have participated in holiday meal service programs. For example, each Thanksgiving, we partner with Kidz Express, which is an after-school program that provides services to kids in an underserved community in Chicago, to provide meals to more than 100 kids. We also have held fundraisers for organizations such as the Carole Robertson Center, a nonprofit that provides childcare and educational opportunities in low-income communities in Chicago.
This year, we added an event. We participated in a water drive organized by a local library. The goal was to collect and send water to Jackson State University, a historically Black college located in Jackson, Mississippi, which has problems with its municipal water system. In addition to collecting water, we helped load it into a truck that would transport it to the university. I have enjoyed the community service aspect of Jack and Jill, as it has allowed me to contribute to society and to have an impact beyond Oak Park.
Outside of Jack and Jill, I volunteered during the pandemic to read to children at a school on Chicago's west side.
