The 2007-2008 financial crisis marked the most severe monetary upheaval since the Great
Depression, affecting countless families, mine included. The crisis immersed us directly into a cascade of challenges, which subsequently led to the dissolution of my parents' marriage. My father was left unemployed for months and due to his reckless spending habits and struggle with alcoholism my parents were unable to make ends meet. Despite accumulating debt to stave off hunger and prevent utility shut offs, the mortgage remained unpaid. The strain of financial hardship along with my father’s mental illness led to tensions within their marriage. His bipolar disorder and dependence on alcohol fueled abusive behavior towards my mother. After my mother’s decision to file for divorce, my father declared bankruptcy and our home was foreclosed soon after. My father relinquished sole custody to my mother due to his detrimental actions. Recognizing the need to protect her children, my mother moved us in with my grandparents. They understood our situation and welcomed us into their home with open arms. My mother never filed for bankruptcy but subsequently carried away thousands of dollars in credit card debt post-divorce. A registered nurse, my mother has devoted over 15 years to a private dermatology practice, a role with comparatively modest income compared to hospital or travel nursing positions. Her commitment to her children’s well-being has prevented her from pursuing more lucrative opportunities. Just recently, she managed to clear the credit card that was tied to her marriage with my father. Due to debt, low credit, and lack of congenial income, my mother has never had the means to possess homeownership, resulting in our living with my grandparents for the past 13 years. Throughout my adolescence I have witnessed the complexities of my family's financial struggle. Motivated by these challenges, I have consistently applied myself in my academic pursuits, aspiring to attend college without the burden of costly student loans. These aspects have molded my financial actions and spending as an individual. I'm vastly frugal with my funds and become increasingly more cautious as I age. I notice that I continue to possess this awareness as my financial resposibility expands.
I believe that pursuing a college education can unlock numerous opportunities. A degree displays one's dedication, critical thinking capability, and overall capacity to acquire new knowledge. I am confident that I maintain the work ethic and determination needed for higher education, but unfortunately, I lack the financial backing needed to attend an advantageous university. This scholarship would substantially aid my aspirations of academic pursuits and provide great opportunity.
