Bio

I graduated from the University of Kansas in 2014 with a Respiratory Therapy degree and have since worked in prominent roles, including Senior and Principal Respiratory Therapist and Head of Department for four years in a major trauma and infectious disease center in Singapore. Despite experiencing burnout during COVID-19, I found a passion for coaching and educating healthcare workers, leading me to pursue a Master's in Instructional Design and Performance Technology at Baker University. My goal is to utilize this expertise to create impactful training solutions addressing workplace challenges. I am driven, motivated, and deeply passionate about making meaningful contributions to my field. Outside of work, I enjoy baking, collecting houseplants, knitting, and hiking. With my diverse experiences and dedication, I believe I am an excellent candidate for your scholarship. Thank you for considering my application.

Growing up, my world was shaped by the stark reality of financial struggle. At just nine years old, my mother delivered a sobering message: if I harbored dreams of attending college, I would need to chart my path to financial support. This pivotal moment ignited a fierce determination within me, setting the stage for a journey defined by resilience and unwavering resolve. Raised in a single-parent, low-income household, the weight of responsibility rested heavily on my young shoulders. While my extended family provided invaluable support, my mother's exacting standards demanded maturity far beyond my years. As the eldest sibling, I assumed caretaker duties for my younger brother, navigating the intricacies of household chores and meal preparation amidst my academic pursuits. While my peers reveled in carefree pursuits, my days were consumed by a relentless pursuit of academic excellence and scholarship opportunities. Maintaining a coveted position in the top tier of my school's academic hierarchy was imperative, as it dictated my eligibility for vital scholarships. The burden of responsibility often threatened to overwhelm me, tempting me to succumb to the weight of my burdens. My secondary school years were characterized by a whirlwind of commitments and accomplishments. Assuming leadership roles as Student Council President and Vice-President of the Chinese Orchestra club, I honed my organizational skills and amplified marginalized voices within the school community. Volunteering over 400 hours further solidified my commitment to service, igniting a passion for advocacy and societal impact. Amidst the relentless pursuit of academic excellence, my experiences crystallized a career aspiration rooted in effecting positive change for the society, going beyond mere financial gain. The culmination of years of perseverance materialized in the form of a coveted full college scholarship. A Health Science Scholarship from the Ministry of Health in Singapore afforded me the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy at the University of Kansas. Embedded within the scholarship contract was a commitment to serve in Singapore's healthcare sector, a responsibility I embraced with fervor and dedication. Over the course of nine years, I immersed myself in the challenging realm of Respiratory Therapy, ascending the ranks to assume leadership as Head of Department amidst the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Committed to fostering growth and empowerment, I dedicated myself to mentoring marginalized respiratory therapists from underrepresented backgrounds, facilitating their integration and professional development in a foreign land. Navigating the complexities of seeking and receiving help amidst societal expectations was a humbling journey. Overcoming the stigma associated with seeking assistance, I discovered the transformative power of humility and resilience. Empowered by the support of others, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and growth, harnessing opportunities to effect tangible change in both my life and the lives of others. I've given a lot of personalized coaching and advice over the years but one simple mantra that everyone needs at a time of adversity is to remember this: "You're capable, strong, and talented. Be brave and be bold. Take life by its reins!" As I continue my educational journey with a Master's Degree in Instructional Design and Performance Technology at Baker University, my career aspirations have shifted from providing excellent clinical care to providing innovative, creative and impactful training solutions to resolve complex workplace performance problems and training gaps. In conclusion, my educational journey has not been an easy one but I think I've done everything I can in my power to achieve the goals that I aspired towards. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be considered for this scholarship. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
