Bio

As a current freshman at Texas A&M University College Station, my journey has been a challenge since my parents were limited in their pursuit for higher education.. This backdrop serves as a powerful catalyst, inspiring me to initiate change within my family and create a unique course for myself. My life goals are diverse, ranging from aspiring to attend medical school and opening a business to founding an organization dedicated to aiding underprivileged immigrants. My vision is to not only provide them with opportunities but also to equip them with the tools needed to surmount challenges. My passion for helping others knows no bounds, and it finds a purposeful outlet in the medical field, where I can make a daily impact. This commitment stems from a lifelong goal that began with my grandmother's battle with cancer. Losing her at a young age ignited in me the desire to become like the compassionate doctors who eased her suffering. My involvement in leadership roles, including Student Government Officer, Health Occupations Students of America Officer, and as a certified nursing assistant, reflects my dedication to service and personal growth. Currently serving as an Aggie Southern Darling, I am driven by the belief in the transformative power of education and the profound impact of compassionate community engagement.

As a first-generation Hispanic college student, my journey toward higher education has been marked by resilience, determination, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. From navigating the complexities of the college application process to balancing academic studies with extracurricular activities and part-time work, I have faced numerous challenges along the way. However, it is through overcoming these obstacles that I have grown both personally and academically, shaping me into the individual I am today. Growing up in a predominantly Hispanic community, I was surrounded by individuals who shared similar cultural backgrounds and experiences. However, when my family relocated to a more diverse area, I found myself feeling isolated and different from my peers for the first time. In third grade, I encountered discrimination and bullying for the first time, as classmates mocked my accent and made hurtful remarks about my ethnicity. This experience was deeply painful and challenging, but it also catalyzed personal growth and resilience. Despite the adversity I faced, I refused to allow discrimination to define me or limit my potential. As I transitioned into high school and began to contemplate my future, I knew that higher education was the key to unlocking my full potential. However, as a first-generation college student, the path to higher education was filled with uncertainty and obstacles. My parents, while supportive, lacked the knowledge and resources to guide me through the college application process. I had to take it upon myself to research scholarships, financial aid, and university admissions requirements, often feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about my future. Despite these challenges, I remained determined to pursue my educational goals and began college at Texas A&M University. I immersed myself in extracurricular activities such as volunteering, Aggie Southern Darlings, Aggie Starlights, and Aggie Study, seeking to make a positive impact in my community while also balancing my biology major. As a member of Aggie Southern Darlings, I participated in various service projects aimed at fostering a sense of community among students and supporting local initiatives. Whether it was volunteering at local retirement homes or organizing community clean-up events, I was committed to giving back to those in need. In Aggie Starlights, I had the opportunity to volunteer at hospitals and camps, offering support to children and families facing challenging circumstances. Whether it was organizing activities for pediatric patients or providing emotional support to families in need, I found fulfillment in making a difference in the lives of others. Additionally, my involvement in Aggie Study reflects my commitment to academic excellence and contributing to scientific research in the field of healthcare. As a member of this research initiative, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and fellow students on groundbreaking research projects, furthering my understanding of healthcare and making valuable contributions to the field. Furthermore, I worked tirelessly to fund my education through scholarships, financial aid, and part-time work, determined to succeed academically despite the financial burdens I faced. Receiving this scholarship would take off some of the financial challenges associated with pursuing higher education. It would provide me with the support I need to focus more fully on my studies and continue to excel academically. My journey toward higher education has been marked by resilience, determination, and a steadfast commitment to success. Despite facing numerous obstacles along the way, I have remained unwavering in my pursuit of excellence, determined to overcome adversity and achieve my educational goals. With the support of scholarships like this one, I am confident that I will continue to thrive academically and make a positive impact in my community and beyond.

Facing discrimination and bullying at a young age was a defining moment in my life that profoundly shaped my resilience and sense of self. Moving from a predominantly Hispanic city to a more white area brought me face-to-face with the harsh reality of racial difference and prejudice. In third grade, I encountered bullying for the first time, as peers mocked my "Mexican accent" and hurled hurtful insults my way. I recall feeling unworthy and less than my peers, which ultimately destroyed my self-confidence. I began to lose who I was in an effort to fit in with those among me. I went from a loud bubbly child to one who no longer wanted to speak in fear that it would cause me to stand out. My mother was the first to notice that her once outspoken funny child who loved to be the center of attention was now hiding who she was. However, with the help of my mother's encouragement and reminder of my identity I remembered who I was. I was a young girl who loved to dance, make jokes, and embrace my culture. Overcoming this adversity was a daunting challenge, especially for my 8-year-old self who had never experienced such hostility before. However, I refused to allow the discrimination to define me or diminish my self-worth. With the support of my family and a few close friends, I found the inner strength to stand tall in the face of adversity. I sought refuge in my cultural heritage and the values instilled in me by my upbringing, finding comfort in my identity as a Hispanic woman. Navigating through this difficult period taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, empathy, and the importance of community. It reinforced the significance of surrounding myself with supportive individuals who uplifted me and validated my experiences. Their encouragement served as a beacon of light during dark times, reminding me that I was not alone in my struggles. This adversity ultimately shaped me into a stronger, more compassionate individual. It instilled within me a deep sense of empathy towards others facing similar challenges and a commitment to advocating for inclusivity and equity. The experience taught me the importance of standing up against discrimination and prejudice, and the power of resilience in overcoming obstacles. To someone facing similar circumstances, I would offer the following advice: first and foremost, know that you are not alone. Seek out supportive individuals who validate your experiences and offer encouragement during difficult times. Embrace your cultural identity and find strength in your heritage. Remember that adversity can be a catalyst for growth and resilience. Stay true to yourself, and never allow discrimination or prejudice to erode your sense of self-worth. Above all, know that you are capable of overcoming any obstacle that comes your way, and that your experiences have the power to shape you into a stronger, more resilient individual.

Being a first-generation Hispanic student has been an exceedingly challenging yet profoundly rewarding journey. I vividly remember the confusion and uncertainty I felt when applying to colleges. My parents, like many Hispanic parents, emphasized the practicality of attending the local community college. However, fueled by a desire to expand my educational horizons, I began on a journey to pursue a university education. I knew I would have to navigate the complexities of scholarships, financial aid, and part-time work to fund my studies, adding another layer of challenges to my path. However, despite these obstacles, my determination to succeed and make my family proud has never wavered. My parents' relentless support and their belief in the transformative power of education have been my guiding lights. Their sacrifices and resilience have inspired me to pursue higher education and strive for excellence in all endeavors. Reflecting on my educational journey, I cannot overlook the role models who have motivated me to pursue higher education. My parents, in particular, have been my greatest inspirations. Despite facing unforeseen challenges that hindered their educational aspirations, they have instilled in me a deep appreciation for learning and a commitment to breaking barriers. My mother grew up as a migrant worker and lost her mother at a young age to cancer, this caused her family to be put in poverty. My father never had the opportunity to finish college as his immigrant parents told him he only needed a high school degree to succeed. My mother's journey as a migrant worker and my father's determination to succeed have shaped my values and aspirations. Their sacrifices and support led me to a career in the healthcare field, where I can give back to my community. Overcoming obstacles has been a vital part of my educational journey. As a first-generation college student, I often felt overwhelmed and alone, struggling with challenging coursework and navigating unfamiliar university resources. However, through perseverance, I sought out support from various campus groups and resources, building a network of peers and mentors who guided me along the way. These experiences have taught me the importance of resilience, resourcefulness, and community support in overcoming adversity and achieving success. The legacy of Jose Prado, as someone who supported education, deeply resonates with me. My father's unwavering support and encouragement mirror Jose Prado's commitment to empowering others through education. Like Jose Prado, my father has been my steadfast supporter, tirelessly advocating for my educational pursuits and providing guidance every step of the way. His legacy inspires me to pay it forward and support future generations of students in pursuing their educational dreams. If I were to establish a scholarship someday, its purpose would be to support first-generation students pursuing careers in healthcare. As a firm believer in the importance of diversity in the healthcare industry, I recognize the need to provide financial assistance and support to underrepresented students. Ideal candidates would demonstrate empathy and a commitment to serving their communities, embodying the values of compassion and inclusivity that are essential in healthcare. Education holds immense power to transform lives and communities. It equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to thrive and make meaningful contributions to society. For me, education has opened doors, broadened my perspective, and empowered me to pursue my passions and aspirations. Moreover, I firmly believe that education has the power to uplift and empower others, particularly those from underserved communities. By providing access to quality education and support, we can break down barriers, create opportunities, and inspire positive change for individuals and communities alike.

I want to become a medical doctor to bridge the communication gap between patients and their doctors. As a first-generation Hispanic student, I have witnessed firsthand my Spanish-speaking grandfather continuously struggle in the healthcare industry. He is often overlooked and misunderstood, leading to misdiagnoses and feelings of helplessness. My journey toward wanting to become a doctor began as a young girl accompanying my grandfather to his medical appointments. He would pick me up from school, and I would often serve as his translator, helping him describe his symptoms and understand the doctor's instructions. This experience made me realize how crucial effective communication is in healthcare. I vividly recall the frustration and lack of independence my grandfather expressed due to the language barrier. He explained how thankful he was for my help, but how it often made him feel helpless. He explained how he moved to America to feel independent and free, but instead, he felt as though he had to rely on others to help him constantly. It was in those moments that I decided I wanted to become a doctor who could communicate effectively with all patients, particularly those from underserved communities. This goal has driven my academic and personal endeavors, despite the numerous obstacles I've faced. Being a first-generation college student has been challenging. My parents did not complete college, so I often had to navigate the complexities of higher education on my own, leading to confusion and moments of self-doubt. Additionally, I have had to fund my own education through scholarships and part-time work, which can be overwhelming. Despite these difficulties, I am determined to persevere and achieve my goal. One significant obstacle has been the financial burden of my education. Without familial guidance on navigating financial aid and scholarships, I had to learn independently how to secure funding for my studies. This often meant balancing a job while maintaining my academic performance, which has been both physically and mentally taxing. However, these experiences have taught me resilience and time management, skills that will undoubtedly benefit me in my medical career. Furthermore, my background has instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to advocating for underserved populations. I understand the struggles of patients who feel marginalized and unheard, and I am dedicated to providing them with the care and respect they deserve. By becoming a medical doctor, I hope to ensure that no patient feels overlooked or misunderstood and to empower them through clear and respectful communication. My personal experiences and the obstacles I have faced have shaped my passion for medicine and my desire to improve patient-doctor communication. I am committed to overcoming these challenges and becoming a compassionate, effective physician who can make a meaningful difference in the lives of my patients, particularly those from underserved communities.
    TEAM ROX Scholarship
My journey began in high school when I volunteered at the local food bank, sorting donations and distributing them to families in need. This experience opened my eyes to the struggles many people face and taught me the importance of community support. Additionally, volunteering at my church with young children during Sunday school and community events allowed me to develop patience and creativity in engaging with children. These early experiences planted the seeds of my passion for helping others be their best. Furthering my commitment, I volunteered at a nursing home to complete my CNA hours. Here I assisted with their activities and spent quality time listening to their stories. This improved my caregiving skills and showed the significance of emotional support in healthcare. Witnessing the positive impact I could make in the lives of elderly residents reinforced my dedication to pursuing a career in nursing, where I could continue to help others thrive. At Texas A&M University, I joined Aggie Southern Darlings to expand my community involvement. This organization focuses on a sense of community among students through various activities. We participate in programs such as "Adopt a Street" where we clean local streets and visit retirement homes to play bingo, paint nails, and build emotional connections with the residents. Through Random Acts of Kindness, we spread positivity on campus by giving out notes and treats to students. Additionally, we engage in the "BIG Event," assisting Bryan families with various tasks, and "BIG LOVE," an event dedicated to raising funds for cancer treatments through the BIG LOVE Cancer Care organization. These activities have furthered my ability to support others and contribute positively to my community. My involvement in AGGIE STARLIGHTS has also been instrumental in my development. This club volunteers at local hospitals and camps, providing support to children and their families. One of our significant contributions is at Camp For All, a camp that provides disabled or terminally ill children with a traditional camp experience. We organize events like the Color Run, a 5K race that raises funds for Camp For All. At local Bryan and Houston hospitals, we create treat bags for children and host story times, playtimes, Build-A-Bear workshops, and other engaging activities to bring joy to young patients. These experiences have deepened my understanding of the importance of creating positive environments for children to thrive, even in the face of illness. In addition to my volunteer work, I participate in AGGIE STUDY, a research initiative focused on cell genes in minorities. This study aims to better understand how different medications affect various genetic backgrounds, contributing to more effective and personalized medical treatments. This experience has honed my research skills and deepened my understanding of the complexities of healthcare, emphasizing the importance of tailored treatments in improving patient outcomes. By contributing to this research, I am helping to advance medical knowledge and ultimately improve the quality of care for diverse populations. Balancing my academic pursuits with extensive volunteer work has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. Volunteering has provided me with invaluable hands-on experience, teaching me the importance of compassion, resilience, and continuous learning. These experiences have not only prepared me for a career in nursing but have also solidified my commitment to making a meaningful impact on others. My journey has taught me that helping others be their best is not just about providing medical care but also about offering emotional support, creating positive environments, and fostering a sense of community.

After graduation, my primary career goal is to become a nurse and then pursue further education to become a Nurse Practitioner (NP). This initially sparked as a young girl because I saw my grandfathers struggle with properly communicating with healthcare staff while being admitted to the hospital. As a first-generation college student, I knew I wanted to be a bridge in the healthcare field, so no one ever feels alone. I recall my grandpa expressing to me how frustrating it felt that no one understood his primary language, Spanish, so they often misdiagnosed him or disregarded his needs. I have always been passionate about healthcare and helping others, and becoming an NP will allow me to provide comprehensive and compassionate care to my patients. My ultimate dream is to work in a pediatric clinic, where I can specialize in assisting children and their families, ensuring they receive the best possible care and support no matter where they come from. To achieve my career goals, I plan to apply to nursing school soon, building on my current studies as a biology major. Gaining acceptance into a reputable nursing program will be a crucial step in my journey to becoming a Nurse Practitioner. I am committed to excelling academically and taking full advantage of the clinical experiences offered during my nursing education. These experiences will provide me with the practical skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the healthcare field. I understand this is no easy feat, which is why I have committed myself to developing critical study habits and hands-on experience. I also believe that hands-on experience is vital for my growth and development as a future healthcare professional. This is why I actively seek opportunities to volunteer and give back to my community. I volunteer at camps for children who are terminally ill or have disabilities, which has allowed me to develop a deep understanding of the unique needs of pediatric patients. This furthers my need to want to succeed with my goals because I truly see the importance of developing a bond with pediatric patients and how fundamental it is to help them and their families on this journey. Additionally, I volunteer at my church and the local food bank, further strengthening my connection to the community and my skills in empathy and service. With the help of the resources my school provides and financial help, I can stay committed to maintaining high academic standards and studying rigorously, without the worry about my financial burden. By balancing my coursework with volunteer work and community involvement, I am gaining a well-rounded education and practical experience that will prepare me for a successful career in nursing. Ultimately, my dedication to making a positive impact on others' lives and my continuous pursuit of knowledge and experience will guide me toward achieving my goal of becoming an NP and eventually opening my own pediatric clinic.

Throughout my academic journey at Texas A&M University College Station, I have actively sought opportunities to make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals within my community. My commitment to service is prevalent in various volunteer initiatives, such as contributing to the local food bank and dedicating time to assist children at church. Additionally, my involvement in student organizations like Aggie Southern Darlings and Student Council has been fundamental in creating a sense of community and encouraging my peers to engage actively. Volunteering at the food bank has provided me with a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by those in need within our community. The experience has not only allowed me to contribute to immediate concerns but has also inspired a deeper commitment to addressing underlying issues of food insecurity. Talking to the people at the food bank and getting a deeper understanding of the challenges that have endured was eye-opening. It pushed me to want to help in various ways such as setting up food drives in my school, addressing the concerns with food insecurities, and being mindful about food waste. Working with children at church has been a particularly rewarding experience, reinforcing my passion for making a positive impact on young lives. As part of organizations like Aggie Southern Darlings and Student Council, I've played a role in creating an inclusive and vibrant community for my peers. These experiences have strengthened my belief in the transformative power of community engagement and the importance of fostering a supportive environment for personal growth. Working with children is especially important because they are the future, and having an opportunity to help guide them is extremely rewarding. Looking ahead, my career goals align with a dedication to public service, specifically within the medical field with a focus on helping children. My aspiration is to become a healthcare professional, working directly with pediatric patients to provide them with compassionate and effective care. By pursuing a career in pediatrics, I aim to contribute to the well-being and development of children, making a lasting impact on their lives and the lives of their families. In the field of public service, particularly in healthcare, the ripple effect of positive interventions extends beyond the individual patient. It influences families, communities, and society at large. My commitment to pediatric medicine is driven by the belief that every child deserves access to quality healthcare and a chance to thrive. By combining my passion for service with a career in the medical field, I hope to contribute to building healthier and happier communities, one child at a time.

As I walked into the bathroom I felt my eyes start to sting and my throat tingle. Slowly my eyes fill up with tears and my vision blurs. The tears rolled down my face with a coolness to them. My breath started to fasten and my chest was feeling heavy. As I tried to calm myself down I just kept remembering the words that had just been said to me. They weren’t that big of a deal and might have not meant anything to anyone else, but they meant something to me. Finally, I wiped my tears and caught my breath so I could walk out and pretend to not be phased. This story is an example of the adversities I face as a Hispanic female. I recall being bullied for my “Mexican accent” and my cultural food from as early as 3rd grade. In this particular event that is engraved in my memory, I recall being in my 3rd grade class and being mocked by my classmate for the accent I had. She made me feel as though my culture was something to be embarrassed of and after that event I felt nervous to talk or stick up for myself in fear that I would sound unintelligent. I never realized the way I spoke was different from my peers since I viewed them all the same. Growing up in a predominantly white-dominant area I was often subjected to humiliation and the feeling of being outcasted. It was clear that my peers and I would face different adversities in life and have different values. As I continue to grow I remember not only being ridiculed for my culture, but also for being a woman. I often put myself in leadership positions and could see the difference in respect people held for me versus my male counterparts. It seemed as though I had to earn and strive for respect, unlike the males who were just given it. This made me realize that being both a person of color and a woman would come with struggles and taught me to push through and find confidence in myself. For this reason I started to want to help other underrepresented groups in my community in any way possible. I started volunteering at the food bank and connecting with the people; hearing what they faced and the adversities they struggled through helped me realize that I was stronger than those words told to me and that I could persevere through. They helped me in many ways and I can never repay those strangers for the courage they gave me to stick up for myself and stand my ground. The experiences I've had at the food bank, along with my other volunteer experiences show me how much I want to give back to my community and continue to help underrepresented groups. In my journey in doing so I’m currently in the process of trying to start an organization that will help young girls who need an “older sister” to help them in any way. I remember being in elementary school and wishing I had an older sister who I could talk to about the struggles I was dealing with and relate to my feelings. I hope that one day I will be that person for a little girl who may feel alone and have no one to turn to. As I continue to try to find new ways to give back to my community I discover new things that help me with the adversities I face and will forever thank my community for doing so.
