In life, challenges are the crucibles that forge our character and reveal our potential. From the depths of despair to the heights of determination, my journey has been one defined by resilience, perseverance, and an unyielding commitment to not only overcome adversity but also to uplift my community in its times of need.
My story of overcoming adversity began with the sudden loss of my mother in 2020. This heart-wrenching event shattered my world and left me grappling with grief. Amid my sorrow, I found strength in the lessons my mother instilled in me - the importance of resilience and a relentless pursuit of excellence. With unwavering determination, I pushed through the anguish, utilizing her teachings to transform my pain into purpose. As the Captain of the Varsity basketball team in high school, my indomitable spirit was further tested when an ACL injury threatened to sideline me indefinitely. This setback served as a stark reminder that life's obstacles are merely growth opportunities. I embarked on a grueling journey of physical therapy, unwavering in my pursuit of recovery. This experience taught me the power of patience, discipline, and the ability to bounce back stronger when faced with adversity.
Growing up in poverty has been a constant struggle, but it has also taught me invaluable lessons about the importance of resourcefulness, empathy, and the unwavering desire to rise above circumstances. Despite facing financial hardships, I am currently juggling two jobs while pursuing a full-time education at Michigan State University. This balancing act has honed my time-management skills, nurtured my work ethic, and solidified my commitment to achieving my dreams against all odds. However, it is not just personal adversity that has shaped my journey. My mother's battle with bipolar disorder and alcoholism illuminated the dire need for mental health awareness and support. These experiences have propelled me to advocate for mental health, break down the stigma surrounding it, and ensure that individuals in need receive the assistance and understanding they deserve.
My aspirations for the future are deeply rooted in my desire to create a more inclusive and compassionate community. I am committed to leveraging my struggles and triumphs to provide vital resources to marginalized communities. Recognizing the urgent need for comprehensive support systems, I envision 24-hour drug and suicide helplines, shelters, food centers, and centers for the homeless, aimed at offering solace, safety, and pathways to stability. Moreover, I intend to establish mentorship programs that empower young individuals, fostering a sense of purpose and determination in the face of adversity.
By awarding me this scholarship, you are not only investing in my education but also in the future leader I aspire to become. My journey showcases the transformational power of resilience, determination, and compassion. With your support, I am determined to continue my advocacy for mental health awareness and social justice, striving for a society where no one is left behind. My experiences have equipped me with a unique perspective and an unyielding commitment to drive positive change, making a lasting impact on my community and beyond. With your support, I am determined to create a more compassionate and inclusive world, ensuring that the resilience within me ignites positive transformation for years to come.
Academic Liberty & Free Speech Scholarship
In the vibrant tapestry of American higher education, the principle of free speech stands as a cornerstone that not only shapes the intellectual development of college students but also empowers them to become active participants in a democratic society. The open exchange of ideas, a hallmark of academic life, is nurtured by the freedom to express diverse perspectives, and it is essential to preserve this fundamental right for the holistic growth of individuals and the advancement of society as a whole. As a passionate advocate for the promotion of diversity of thought and critical thinking in my field of study and extracurricular pursuits, I believe that upholding free speech on campus is paramount.
Free speech is not merely a constitutional right; it is a catalyst for personal and intellectual evolution. College is a time of self-discovery, and exposure to a wide range of viewpoints through free speech enables students to refine their own beliefs, challenge assumptions, and engage in constructive debates. The clash of differing ideas fosters critical thinking skills, encourages empathy, and equips students with the tools needed to navigate an increasingly complex world. This environment cultivates intellectual resilience, preparing students to face challenges and adapt to evolving perspectives throughout their lives.
Preserving free speech on campus is essential because it upholds the core values of academic inquiry and empowers individuals to be lifelong learners. By protecting the right to express diverse viewpoints, colleges and universities foster an environment where students can engage with a myriad of perspectives. This exposure helps to break down barriers and cultivate an inclusive atmosphere where every voice is heard. Without the freedom to express unpopular or controversial ideas, the growth of knowledge is stunted, hindering the very purpose of higher education.
As a student majoring in Public Relations, I am acutely aware of the importance of diverse thought and open discourse in the democratic process. My field is built upon the foundation of free expression and encourages a robust exchange of ideas. Through my studies, I have come to understand that the vitality of democracy lies in the ability of citizens to engage in civil debates, considering perspectives that differ from their own. By promoting dialogue and embracing dissent, I contribute to the preservation of free speech not only within the academic community but also in society at large.
Moreover, my involvement in extracurricular activities further underscores my commitment to upholding the values of diversity of thought and critical thinking. As a member of the college debate club, I engage in respectful discussions on various topics, challenging both my own beliefs and those of my peers. By participating in these debates, I not only sharpen my analytical skills but also encourage others to think critically about their positions. This contributes to the creation of a campus culture that celebrates differences and values the art of constructive disagreement.
In conclusion, the role of free speech in shaping the intellectual and personal development of American college students cannot be overstated. It fosters critical thinking, empowers individuals to engage with diverse viewpoints, and prepares them for active citizenship in a democratic society. Preserving this fundamental right is imperative to maintaining the integrity of higher education and fostering a culture of open dialogue. Through my studies in Public Relations and my involvement in activities that promote critical thinking, I am dedicated to advancing diversity of thought and ensuring that free speech remains a cornerstone of intellectual growth on campus.
Mohamed Magdi Taha Memorial Scholarship
In a world where change is often met with resistance and indifference, individuals like Mohamed Magdi Taha inspire us to stand up for what is right, raise our voices with compassion, and tirelessly advocate for meaningful change. Taha's commitment to building a better community by championing both small and large acts of transformation is a guiding light that encourages us all to be 'up-standers.' I am proud to embody this spirit through my work, activism, and aspirations to create a positive impact in my community.
My journey as an 'up-stander' is deeply rooted in my involvement with the Boys and Girls Club, where I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of a united community. At the Club, I have been actively engaged in mentoring and guiding young minds, helping them develop skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Through my interactions, I have come to understand that even seemingly small acts of kindness and support can lead to profound changes in the lives of others.
Volunteering at The Center for the Homeless has further solidified my commitment to advocacy. Working with marginalized individuals has taught me that every person has a story worth hearing and that by lending our voices to those who have been silenced, we can amplify their struggles and hopes. This experience has strengthened my resolve to use my voice as a powerful tool for change. As an activist, I have had the privilege of delivering multiple speeches on various platforms, advocating for social justice and equality. Whether it's addressing systemic racism, advocating for gender equality, or highlighting the urgency of environmental conservation, I firmly believe that advocacy begins with articulating the need for change. Just as Taha used his strong voice to make a difference, I am committed to using my words to create awareness and foster meaningful dialogue.
My community is my heart and soul, a place where I have grown, learned, and been inspired by those around me. Embracing Taha's philosophy, I consider it my duty to stand up for the voiceless within my community. I believe that open conversations can lead to a more empathetic and understanding society, and I am dedicated to breaking down the barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help. Looking ahead, I am fueled by a burning desire to create lasting change through the establishment of a nonprofit organization. This organization will focus on offering free child development and education to underprivileged communities, recognizing that access to quality education is a powerful equalizer that can break the cycle of poverty and empower individuals to lead fulfilling lives.
The costs of tuition, textbooks, and living expenses can quickly accumulate, often placing additional stress on students who are striving to balance their academic pursuits with community involvement.
This scholarship would enable me to explore opportunities that might have otherwise been out of reach due to financial constraints. It would provide me with the resources needed to fully engage in my academic pursuits, collaborate with peers on meaningful projects, and participate in workshops, conferences, and seminars that further enhance my understanding of community development.
Mohamed Magdi Taha's legacy has taught us the profound impact that a dedicated individual can have on a community. As an 'up-stander,' I have committed myself to using my voice and compassion to advocate for change. Just as Taha believed in the transformative power of seemingly small acts, I am driven by the understanding that change, no matter how big or small, begins with one voice—one voice that I am proud to lend in the pursuit of a better world.

As I reflect on my journey of volunteering, I am reminded of the profound impact it has had on my mindset. From working with the Boys and Girls Club of St. Joseph County, contributing to the mission of Americorps, to serving meals at the Center For the Homeless, my experience has left an indelible mark on my character, values, and aspirations. Volunteering has not only allowed me to make a difference in my community but has also shaped me into a more compassionate, empathetic, and socially conscious individual.
At the Boys and Girls Club, I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education and mentorship for children. Engaging with these young minds, I realized the incredible potential that lies within each child, regardless of their circumstances. By offering my time and support, I was not only helping them academically but also fostering their self-esteem and resilience. Linda Hicks Memorial Scholarship
Growing up in a household impacted by domestic violence, substance abuse, and mental health challenges deeply shaped my life and the person I have become today. Raised by my single African American mother, who struggled with mental health issues and substance abuse, I was forced to assume the role of a caregiver for my younger siblings. The burden of responsibility fell heavily upon my shoulders at a young age, and the emotional toll of witnessing my mother's struggles left an indelible mark on my heart. My mother's coping mechanisms led her down a dark path, causing instability and uncertainty within our family dynamic. Despite the adversities, I pushed through, taking on the role of a protector and provider for my siblings. It was during this time that I came to understand the importance of empathy and resilience, even in the face of overwhelming challenges.
I carried the weight of my childhood experiences with me, harboring resentment towards my mother for the hardships we endured. However, as I matured, I realized that her actions were driven by her own pain and struggles, and I learned to separate her coping mechanisms from her identity as a person. This transformative realization allowed me to find compassion for her and to focus on breaking the cycle of abuse and addiction that plagued our family. The year 2020 brought an unimaginable tragedy as my mother's life was suddenly cut short. Medics found her in a highly intoxicated state, serving as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved care, coordination, and communication surrounding mental health and substance abuse within our communities. This heart-wrenching loss has further strengthened my determination to lead change and address the root causes of these complex issues.
I am passionately committed to being an advocate for domestic violence and drug abuse prevention. I firmly believe that by addressing the underlying issues, we can empower African American women to rise above their circumstances and reclaim their lives. Through higher education, I plan to initiate and implement comprehensive programs and systems that cater specifically to the needs of African American women affected by domestic violence and substance abuse. By combining my educational knowledge, research findings, and community engagement, I seek to create a support system that embraces these women with empathy, dignity, and respect. I aspire to collaborate with healthcare professionals and policymakers to bridge the gap in care and ensure that African American women have access to the support they need. I will actively work to enhance communication among service providers, ensuring that resources are efficiently utilized and readily available to those seeking help. My vision is to see them transform from survivors to thrivers, breaking free from the chains of abuse and addiction and embracing a future filled with hope, opportunity, and empowerment.
Wholeheartedly devoted to higher education, I pledge to utilize this opportunity to bring about enduring change for the betterment of my community. This scholarship will serve as a stepping stone toward achieving my goal of empowering African American women, dismantling the cycle of trauma, and nurturing a compassionate and supportive atmosphere for healing and personal growth. I am dedicated to being a catalyst for change and a voice for the voiceless, working tirelessly to improve care, coordination, and communication in the pursuit of a brighter, thriving future for all.
Elizabeth Schalk Memorial Scholarship
Growing up in a household where mental illness cast a heavy shadow, I have firsthand experience of how it can profoundly impact a family's dynamic and individual lives. Raised by a single mother diagnosed with bipolar disorder and severe depression, I witnessed her relentless struggles with her symptoms. My mother's battle with mental illness and her subsequent reliance on alcohol as a coping mechanism presented a daunting obstacle to providing a stable and nurturing environment for our family. At just seven years old, I had to shoulder the burden of taking care of my siblings, ensuring they were fed, clothed, and looked after. While my peers enjoyed carefree childhoods, my innocence was stolen, replaced by the premature responsibilities of adulthood.
The weight of these responsibilities placed a tremendous strain on my relationship with my mother, as I struggled to reconcile my feelings of anger and frustration with her inability to fulfill the role of a traditional caregiver. However, as time passed, I began to understand that my mother's actions were a result of her mental illness, not a reflection of her as a person. I learned to separate her struggles from her identity, which allowed me to find forgiveness and compassion in my heart. In 2020, a tragic event forever altered the course of my life. My mother's untimely passing shed new light on the devastating impact of mental illness and addiction. The heartbreaking discovery of her heavily intoxicated state by the medics highlighted the toll that years of self-medication had taken on her health, which led to her passing. This life-altering event became a turning point for me, igniting an unquenchable passion to raise awareness about mental health and addiction and provide support to those facing similar circumstances.
With an unwavering determination to break the cycle of generational struggles, I actively engage in mental health awareness by devoting my time to volunteer at local counseling centers and helplines, offering a compassionate ear to those seeking someone to listen. Understanding that mental health issues can disproportionately affect vulnerable communities, I have dedicated myself to mentoring young children growing up in detrimental environments where mental health concerns often go unaddressed. I strive to show these children that their current circumstances do not define their future and that they possess the strength to overcome adversities and achieve greatness. I want to instill the belief that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a courageous step toward a healthier and happier future. I am committed to advocating for the destigmatization of mental health issues and fostering a compassionate environment that empowers individuals to seek help without fear of judgment.
With the support of this scholarship, I will have the opportunity to pursue my education and hone the skills required to advocate for mental health on a broader scale. I am eager to contribute to society by helping families understand that mental illness does not define an individual, and together, we can create a supportive network that empowers individuals to overcome challenges and thrive.
