I believe my leadership skills started all the way back in third grade. My teacher assigned me to be the line leader for our class whenever we walk to the cafeteria, and this was one of my first leader ship roles. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but everyone has to start somewhere, and I was so excited for this opportunity. As years went by, I obtained different positions; tennis JV captain, sports medicine secretary, and even the comanager at my job.
Previously, I have also been the Arizona SkillsUSA State Secretary. As Secretary, I represented 15,000 amazing SkillUSA members, along with my officer team. We traveld to Washington DC in order to represent every single one of them. I have also been blessed with the opportunity to work alongside the Mexican government to connect to different municipalities across Jalisco. Due to this summer program, I was able to create different opportunities for cities to grow environmentally, as well as strengthening our ties with organizations who help people get back on their feet after they have been deported.
Never in a million years would I have thought that I would play such an important role, not only in my school, but in my state and culture. It doesn't matter where you come from or who you are, you will always find a place. Opportunities come to you, welcome you with open arms and teach you all you need to know to be happy. I really hope that you are willing to give me the opportunity I have been seeking and help me keep learning and expanding my knowledge so I can continue to grow as a leader and individual.

A huge contributor to not understanding people can be miscommunication. When people don't use their words properly they may confuse the receiver of the information. By using your words a specific way, you can also misinform people, which is very common in our social media culture. Different news outlets use specific phrasing in order to get their viewers to do a certain action. This has been a huge problem with older generations recently because some people have been getting the wrong idea of situations. How are we supposed to work together as a country when words are constantly being misused?
The very obvious answer to solve this problem, though not the easiest, would be to obtain information from neutral resources. Without having bias be a factor in the writing, it's easy to formulate your own opinion. A lot of news sources have been paid by political figures to skew the information in a certain direction. By using words specifically, you can have the reader formulate the opinion you want them to have. This has always been an issue, false propaganda, but it has been more used now that social media is a part of our every day lives.
This is honestly the biggest problem that we have facing right now because we can't work together as a team when there are obviously two sides who are not willing to be open minded and change their opinion. People are at war with each other, and it is all because some people in power can't communicate properly.

Honestly, I know this would have to be an inspiring message to share with my peers but truth is, that college is not for everyone. If vocational school sounds more up their ally, go ahead. If my friends want to join the military, they have my full support. Want to start working right off the bat and get money for your family? Im right here if you need me. Yes, college can be helpful to your future and it opens lots of opportunities that you wouldn't have if you didn't get a degree, but if it doesn't make you happy, why endure it? I am currently in college right now, and Im happy. I know I'm thriving because its the kind of environment that I like, but let me tell you; I would much rather be traveling and exploring the world. It feels a little hypocritical of me to write about going to college and trying to convince someone when simply, it's just not in the cards for everyone. Im struggling to pay for college, and if some people find it better to save their money and help their family instead, by all means go ahead. I do wish more people would go to college but truth is, its not for everyone and thats okay.

Art can be described as anything that makes you feel something. Weather that be painting, ceramics, music, poetry, but to me, that is languages. Languages is a form of art in many ways. By putting certain sounds together, you are able to communicate to different people from all over the world. There are times where it may take lots and lots of practice for you to be able to learn a specific sound, rolling your Rs in Spanish for example. As a Mexican, this comes fairly easy to me, but not everyone can do it.
I am lucky enough to speak three languages. To me, this is art. I have used my love for languages to help people communicate through me. I have worked with the Government of Mexico, the consulates and even in my own college to help translate documents for others who don't speak the language. When the vaccine first began, I remember not many Hispanics in Phoenix could read English, and so they didn't fill out the application and failed to get the vaccine. My college partnered up with the Mexican Consulate and allowed us to translate the information for the elders who couldn't understand it. We set up appointments for them, and even drove them to our vaccine site.
Although it seems like something so simple, translating some papers, I had a couple of women come up to me crying and saying thank you because it was a matter of life or death. I didn't think much of it, but after having my grandfather die from covid, I saw him through the eyes of the people who came for help. To me, translating didn't mean much growing up. It was something I always did, but after then, I see it as a skill. Its art.

Ever since I was little, I remember having to translate important documents to my parents because they couldn’t understand what it was saying. It was a bit difficult for me because at the age of seven, I was having to translate words that I still didn’t understand the meaning of. I was always frustrated with them growing up because they couldn’t understand what the documents were saying. It was so simple for me, did they not learn this at school? Why can’t they just read the same way that I do? Years went by and I realized that this was a common occurrence between my friends and some of their immigrant parents as well. “This is America, speak English” was a phrase that they heard a little too often and never told me about. After years of getting treated unfairly because of my culture, I realized how ungrateful I was to my parents. I would get so frustrated with them, not knowing that I will be the same in any other place in the world. This inspired me to help people as much as I can with this problem.
My first language is Spanish, and I learned English once I started school. When I was in high school, we had two options: Spanish or French. I decided to choose French because I wanted to challenge myself, instead of just sitting around because I already knew what the Spanish teacher was going to teach. I began studying Italian after I had an exchange student friend who came from Italy, and decided to learn sign language because there could be a possibility that I would meet someone that was deaf. Although I am not the best in Italian or sign language, I always do my best to try to understand people even if I can’t speak their language.
What I want to do with my degree is help other people understand the importance of communicating. I want to be able to travel the world and teach students about different cultures in order to help them be more understanding of people that are different from them. The world is very divided right now and I truly think that that is because a lot of people don’t understand each other. Ignorance will always be the root of all evil and if I can teach younger generations about different cultures and languages, I believe that the world can become more united since they will be more understanding of people that are different from them. When people are not open minded, they don’t tend to understand the actions of others because they don’t know the reasoning behind it. By teaching younger generations more about different cultures in the world, they will be more excited and intrigued to see those cultures. I understand that it is important to have students be proud of their own culture, but I also think that they should be excited to learn about other cultures as well.

Princess Diana once said “Lead from the heart, not the head”. Words coming from such a strong and respected woman could not have felt truer than this. Just like Diana, I believe in leading with compassion instead of animosity, in sincerity instead of dishonesty, in teaching fellow peers what is right instead of teaching them what other people want to see. Leadership and communications both go hand in hand. In the near future, I wish to obtain a degree in Communications and a minor in Marketing. Leadership will always be a part of me and I would like to have a career in which I can show other people how to be leaders as well.

Due to all of this, communication has become very important to me and it became the major that I wanted to study. I also wanted to minor in marketing because when I was in high school I used to be a State Officer in the state of Arizona for an organization called SkillsUSA. In this organization, I represented 15,000 members during national meetings and events. Since I was the secretary of this organization, I was in charge of the social media aspect of everything we did. They called me the “Vlogger of the Group” because everywhere we went, I would always take out my phone and start recording or taking pictures for our social media page. I was in charge of our Instagram pages as well as our Facebook pages and keeping track of our insights so our views could go up. Representing an organization the way that I was able to, really helped me understand and be more passionate about public relations and communications.
