Your Health Journey Scholarship
My journey towards a healthier lifestyle began during my senior year in high school when I realized that my sedentary lifestyle, coupled with a diet mostly comprised of fast food, was taking a toll on my physical health and mental wellbeing. I knew that if I didn’t make changes to my lifestyle, the negative effects would only continue to accumulate, especially as I transitioned into college, a period notorious for unhealthy habits. That realization was the turning point for me, and since then, I’ve embarked on a conscious journey towards healthier living.
One of the major changes I made was in my diet. I started by reducing the amount of fast food and processed foods I consumed. Instead, I focused on incorporating more fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into my diet. I also started drinking more water and less soda. This change was challenging, especially as a student with a tight schedule, but the benefits I've experienced in terms of increased energy and improved digestion have made it worthwhile.
I also incorporated regular physical activity into my routine. As a student pursuing a dual Bachelor of Science degree in Information Science and Digital Narrative & Interactive Design, my course work is heavily computer-based. This meant long hours of sitting. To counteract this, I started taking regular breaks to walk around campus. I also joined the university’s intramural sports team, which not only helped me stay physically active but also provided a fun and social outlet.
Sleep was another area I focused on. I used to stay up late, either studying or watching TV, and then struggle to wake up for my morning classes. I started setting a strict bedtime for myself and created a relaxing bedtime routine to help signal to my body that it was time to sleep. This not only helped me get more restful sleep but also improved my concentration and mood during the day.
But my health journey wasn’t just about physical health. I recognized the importance of mental health as well. I started practicing mindfulness and meditation, which helped reduce my stress levels and improve my focus. I also made it a point to maintain a healthy social life, spending time with friends and participating in clubs and organizations on campus. These activities provided a much-needed break from academics and helped maintain a balanced and fulfilling college life.
Volunteering at the Bulverde Area Humane Society and the San Antonio Food Bank also played a crucial role in my journey towards a healthier lifestyle. Helping others gave me a sense of purpose and satisfaction that boosted my mental well-being.
My health journey has been a learning process, filled with trials, errors, and victories. There have been setbacks, but each one has been a valuable lesson. I am proud of the changes I've made and the progress I've achieved. The Your Healthy Journey Scholarship by Top Nutrition Coaching would be a great honor to receive. Not only would it provide financial support for my education, but it would also serve as a recognition of the effort I've put into living a healthier lifestyle. CEW IV Foundation Scholarship Program
Yes, I believe that it is necessary for society to change its way of responding to the problems faced by disadvantaged communities. Current responses often focus on short-term solutions and lack the systemic change needed to address the root causes of these issues. To create a more equitable society, we must reevaluate our approach and address the underlying factors contributing to the disparities faced by these communities.
Firstly, the education system needs to be restructured to provide equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their socio-economic background. Many disadvantaged students attend underfunded schools that lack resources and offer limited access to advanced courses or extracurricular activities. This perpetuates the cycle of poverty and reduces the likelihood of these students pursuing higher education. By investing in the education system and ensuring equal opportunities for students from all backgrounds, we can help close the achievement gap and empower disadvantaged communities. Policies should be enacted to provide additional funding to low-income schools, and efforts should be made to recruit and retain high-quality teachers in these areas.
Secondly, we must address the systemic barriers that prevent disadvantaged individuals from accessing quality healthcare. This includes expanding healthcare coverage, improving access to medical facilities in underserved areas, and promoting preventative care. By addressing these healthcare disparities, we can improve overall well-being and reduce the financial burden faced by disadvantaged communities. Additionally, culturally competent care should be emphasized to ensure that all individuals receive appropriate and effective healthcare services, regardless of their cultural background or language proficiency.
Thirdly, affordable housing and economic opportunities must be prioritized to combat poverty and improve financial stability. Initiatives such as affordable housing programs, job training, and financial literacy education can empower individuals and provide them with the tools needed to escape poverty. In addition, policies aimed at reducing income inequality and promoting economic mobility can create a more inclusive society where all individuals have the opportunity to succeed. Government investments in infrastructure projects and the development of public transportation systems can also create job opportunities and improve access to resources for disadvantaged communities.
Fourthly, addressing the criminal justice system's disparities is crucial to promote fairness and reduce the overrepresentation of disadvantaged individuals in prison. Reforming policies that disproportionately impact disadvantaged communities, such as mandatory minimum sentences and cash bail, can help to create a more just and equitable society. Additionally, investing in community-based alternatives to incarceration and providing support for formerly incarcerated individuals can help break the cycle of recidivism and promote successful reintegration into society.
Lastly, society needs to address systemic racism and discrimination that perpetuates the marginalization of minority communities. This includes implementing policies that promote diversity and inclusion, as well as investing in community-led initiatives that empower BIPOC individuals. By addressing these issues, we can begin to dismantle the barriers faced by disadvantaged communities and promote social justice. Encouraging open dialogue and promoting education on issues related to race and discrimination can foster understanding and empathy, leading to a more inclusive and equitable society.
In conclusion, it is essential for society to change its way of responding to the problems faced by disadvantaged communities by addressing the root causes of these issues. This includes investing in education, healthcare, affordable housing, economic opportunities, criminal justice reform, and promoting social justice. By transforming our approach, we can create a more equitable society where all individuals have the chance to thrive and reach their full potential. I believe it is our collective responsibility to support these changes and work towards a brighter future for all.

Bold Perseverance Scholarship
Last summer threw my family into a whirlwind. A friend who recently graduated was dealing with an unsettling homelife situation and we agreed to have her move in with us. She needed a place to stay until she moved to college in the fall. Her belongings, from childhood toys and musical instruments to her two dogs moved in, and overnight changed our family dynamic.
My house was louder with more activity as the pets became acclimated. I was happy to help and it all worked out for the best, but no sooner had she moved in, than a mini twister damaged our roof. The insurance company paid for a replacement but they removed shingles on a rainy day, and it rained inside of our home. It was exhausting, unsettling and everyone was upset at first.
It’s amazing how quickly one can adapt though. We covered all items, emptied rooms, altered our schedules and sleeping arrangements to accommodate the water remediation in addition to the roof repairs. We learned to laugh at the utter chaos around us. I would have imagined that I would have been completely distressed at the crazy circumstances, but it felt much better to just focus on moving things along and dealing with the chaos as best I could. My friend left for college, the roof was replaced and I agreed to keep the dogs, turning this challenging summer into lasting memories.
Bold Driven Scholarship
My plans for my academic pursuits are to attain a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Computer Engineering. I would also like to earn a Masters in Science in Engineering, then apply to a doctoral program for a PhD in Computer Science, with a concentration in Cybersecurity. Another goal I have is to study abroad.
Science helps bring together a global community and studying abroad would help me gain an understanding of the problems and solutions as seen from different perspectives. My strongest influence came from my internship with a robotics company called Mekaworks. This was a start-up company that received funding for paid internships through a university grant program. The company founder was enthusiastic about having me work for the company, which made for a great work experience. From being able to program and teach robots, to the actual hands on of building robots, I began to further develop my interests in engineering.

Bold Learning and Changing Scholarship
My high school, like many, moved online in spring 2020. While some of my peers did not feel comfortable in this learning environment, I found this challenge to be unique and beneficial. Nothing about the crisis that precipitated the move to remote learning was positive, but the experience has left a lasting impression on me.
During this time, I began a part time job at a fast food restaurant to save money for college. The work climate we are in however, meant that my part time hours quickly became full time, then moved to 55 hours. Perhaps it is due to these last 19 months, but it seems that people are a bit frayed at the ends. I have heard people act rudely before, but this has been something entirely different.
I try to be a positive interaction in their day, even if for a moment. I realize many have been impacted in ways I will never know. I considered myself polite to employees in the past, but I now make an effort to show appreciation, because I am fully aware that they are bearing the brunt of misplaced anger every day. I wouldn't have expected to like this job experience as much as I have, but there has been something about pulling together as a team, under exhausting days and meeting people who are trying to take care of their families, that has left me with a sense of camaraderie and respect for each individual who helps make someone’s day a better.
Both moving online, and working at McDonald’s have helped me grow as an individual. Regardless of which degree I work towards and which job I am fortunate to one day have, I will never lose the skills I learned and sense of gratitude I gained.
Bold Impact Matters Scholarship
I live outside of a major city. The city offers assistance to those facing food insecurity and extends this help to our area, even though we are in a different county. However, because of the distance, oftentimes those in need aren’t able to access this resource.
At the onset of the pandemic, the San Antonio Food Bank sent a newsletter with disturbing images of people waiting in massive car lines for hours to pick up food. In my county, Provisions Outreach is a much smaller, but important food pantry, as it is located in our area and is accessible to those in this part of the county. This location allows families to benefit from donations without struggling to find transportation to go into town for a trip that could take hours to complete.
Via social media, I alerted neighbors of needed items and that I was willing to facilitate contactless pick up and drop off of any donations. Our houses are acres apart so in order to make collection work safely for all, we arranged days that I picked up boxed or bagged items from front porches or mailboxes. I received an enthusiastic response.
Several asked to be notified each time I plan to do this so that they could grocery shop accordingly. It makes me feel like a contributing member of our community to take on this responsibility and I hope it reminds our struggling neighbors that their community cares about them.
