Growing up, I was raised by my grandmother. My mother, who was a single parent, had to work long hours to provide for us, so my grandmother became our primary caregiver. My grandmother was the rock of our family. She was a strong and resilient woman who had experienced a lot in her life, and she taught us valuable life lessons that have stayed with me to this day.
One of the biggest things my grandmother instilled in me was the value of hard work. She had worked tirelessly her entire life to provide for her family, and she instilled in me a strong work ethic that I carry with me today. She taught me the importance of perseverance, and that no matter what obstacles I may face, I should never give up on my dreams.
Being raised by my grandmother also taught me the importance of family. My grandmother had a large family, and she always stressed the importance of staying connected and supporting each other. She taught me the value of relationships, and that true happiness comes from the love and support of those around you. Growing up without a father was not easy, but it taught me the importance of being self-sufficient. My mother worked long hours to provide for us, and my grandmother was always there to pick up the slack. However, I knew that I couldn't rely on them forever, so I learned to take care of myself from a young age. This independence has carried over into my adult life, and it has helped me to achieve my goals.
As a student pursuing a career in data analysis or data science, I know that my background has given me a unique perspective. I have seen firsthand the challenges that come with being a single parent or being raised by a grandparent, and I know that there are many families out there who are struggling just like mine did. My goal is to use my skills and knowledge to help these families in any way I can. I am passionate about using data to make a positive impact in the world. I believe that data has the power to transform lives, and I want to use my skills to help organizations make more informed decisions. I am particularly interested in working with nonprofits and other organizations that are dedicated to helping families in need.
In conclusion, being raised by my grandmother had a profound effect on my upbringing. She taught me the importance of hard work, family, and perseverance, and she instilled in me a strong sense of independence. As I pursue my career in data analysis or data science, I am committed to using my skills to make a positive impact in the world, particularly for families who are struggling. I believe that my background has given me a unique perspective, and I am excited to see where my future goals will take me.
Ruthie Brown Scholarship
As an undergraduate student pursuing a career in data analysis or data science, I am aware of the significant student loan debt that I may face after graduation. In light of this, I have put some thought into how I plan to address my current and future student loan debt.
Firstly, I am exploring all possible options to reduce the amount of student loan debt I accrue during my undergraduate studies. I am actively seeking out scholarships and grants to fund my education and offset the cost of tuition, books, and living expenses. I am also considering taking advantage of work-study programs, internships, and co-op opportunities to earn money while gaining valuable experience in my field of study. Additionally, I am exploring the possibility of attending a community college for my first two years to reduce the overall cost of my education.
As for my current student loan debt, I plan to manage it by working gradually after college to pay it off. While this may not be the most glamorous or exciting plan, I believe it is a realistic and responsible approach. I understand that student loan debt can have a significant impact on one's financial health, and I do not want to fall into the trap of taking on more debt than I can handle. To achieve this, I plan to seek employment opportunities as soon as possible after graduation, ideally in my field of study. I will work to establish a solid financial foundation by creating a budget, living frugally, and making consistent payments on my student loans. I will also explore repayment options such as income-driven repayment plans, loan forgiveness programs, and loan consolidation to ensure that I am taking advantage of all available resources.
In addition to these practical steps, I believe that developing a strong financial literacy foundation is essential to successfully managing student loan debt. I plan to educate myself on personal finance topics such as budgeting, saving, and investing, so that I can make informed decisions about my money and maximize my financial opportunities. Moreover, I plan to continue my education and advance my skills in my field of study. This will not only increase my earning potential but also make me more marketable to employers. By continually developing my skills and staying up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in my field, I can position myself for long-term financial stability and success.
In summary, my plan for addressing my current and future student loan debt involves a combination of practical steps and a commitment to financial literacy and continued education. While it may not be the most glamorous approach, I believe that it is a responsible and realistic strategy that will help me achieve long-term financial stability and success. I am grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship, as it will help me achieve my educational and career goals while also supporting my financial health.
I Can and I Will Scholarship
As a person living with epilepsy, I have faced numerous obstacles in my life. However, with perseverance and determination, I have been able to overcome them and pursue my education. In this essay, I will share my story of how I overcame my challenges and my plans for furthering my education.
Growing up in Africa with epilepsy was not easy. In my community, epilepsy was considered a curse, and people living with it were often isolated and discriminated against. I remember my close relatives asking me to keep my condition secret as if people found out no one will sit by me or even want to date me. In my country, most people will prefer to have AIDS or Cancer than be Epileptic. I also remember an instance when I once had a seizure in front of a grocery store, when I woke up I heard a woman say “ na witch pikin'”. Which means she’s a witch in Kamtok. I experienced this firsthand and struggled to cope with the stigma that came with my condition. However, with the support of some of my family, friends, and medical professionals, I learned to manage my epilepsy and not let it define me.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was getting an education. In Africa, there is still a lack of awareness and understanding about epilepsy, and many schools were not equipped to handle my condition. Some teachers and classmates were scared of me, and I was often excluded from school activities. This made me feel alone and discouraged, but I refused to give up on my dreams.
With the help of my mom, I found a school that was willing to accommodate me. They provided me with a special needs teacher who understood my condition and was patient with me. They also allowed me to take breaks during classes and provided a quiet room where I could rest if I had a seizure. These accommodations made a huge difference in my academic performance and helped me excel in my studies. After completing my high school education, I decided to pursue a degree in Information Science. I chose this field because I believe technology can be used to improve the world. I have always been interested in how technology can be used to improve healthcare and education, especially for people living with disabilities.
Currently, I am exploring different fields within Information Science, including data analysis, software development, and cybersecurity. I am excited about opportunities that this field presents and how it can be used to solve real-world problems. I hope to use my knowledge and skills to develop innovative solutions that can help people living with disabilities, especially those with epilepsy. After pursuing higher education, I hope to make a positive impact in my community and beyond. I believe that education is a powerful tool that can be used to change lives and make the world a better place. I hope to use my knowledge and skills to help bridge the digital divide in Africa and improve access to healthcare and education for people living with disabilities.
In conclusion, living with epilepsy has not been easy, but I have learned to overcome the challenges and pursue my dreams. I am grateful for the support of my family, friends, and medical professionals who have helped me along the way. My journey has taught me the importance of resilience, determination, and the power of education. I look forward to continuing my education in Information Science and using my knowledge and skills to make a positive impact in the world.

Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
My experience with mental health has had a profound impact on every aspect of my life. From my beliefs to my relationships and career aspirations, everything has been affected by my struggles with stress, depression, bad self-image, and burnouts.
Firstly, my experience with mental health has influenced my beliefs. I used to believe that mental health issues were not real, and that people who suffered from them were weak or lacked the willpower to overcome them. However, after experiencing these issues myself, I now understand that mental health struggles are very real and can affect anyone, regardless of their strength or willpower. This realization has led me to become a strong advocate for mental health awareness and treatment, as I believe that it is crucial to destigmatize mental health issues and provide support and resources to those who need it.
In terms of relationships, my struggles with mental health have both strengthened and strained my connections with others. On one hand, my experiences have allowed me to develop a greater sense of empathy and understanding for others who may be going through similar struggles. This has helped me to connect with others on a deeper level and build more meaningful relationships. On the other hand, my mental health issues have also caused strain in some of my relationships, as it can be difficult for others to understand what I am going through or how to support me. One of the most significant ways in which my experience with mental health has influenced me is in my beliefs. I have come to understand that mental health is just as important as physical health, and that there should be no shame in seeking help when needed. I have also learned that mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or social status, and that we need to work together as a society to break down the stigma surrounding mental health.
Finally, my experience with mental health has greatly influenced my career aspirations. Prior to my struggles with mental health, I had a very narrow and rigid view of what success looked like. I believed that success meant achieving high grades, working long hours, and making a lot of money. However, after experiencing burnouts and struggling with depression and stress, I realized that this view of success was not sustainable or healthy. I began to reevaluate my priorities and my career aspirations, and realized that I wanted to work in a field that would allow me to make a positive impact on others while also prioritizing my own mental health and well-being.
This realization led me to pursue a career in information science, as I believe that technology has the potential to be used for good and to help people in meaningful ways. My interest in computer science started when I was in a single-sex boarding school back in Africa. It was the only logical thing I could muster to study. It was fascinating. I remember when my information technology instructor back then will call me a "computer engineer", I was just 14.
Furthermore, into my career, I learned computer-related languages like SQL, C++ and Python which enabled me to better communicate with a different interface and implement most of my visualized creativity. For example, I used SQL to manipulate data in different relational databases and have desired outcomes from them. I could also use SQL to delete, Update and even insert information into any database as convenient. When it came to C++ combined with Pyhton, they helped me build fun games and applications.
However, in my first two years of college, I managed to get a job at a hardware/ software company (which remains anonymous) whereby my job was to repair computers and put them all together from scratch! , I would I am passionate about repairing computers as it makes me feel like a computer "healer". troubleshooting them feels like diagnosing an eventual issue (which is to me) and in the end seeing the computer work properly after repairing it and changing the required components feels like I healed it !. Thou it is absurd to compare something so tangible to a living, it's just passion-driven instincts.
The main reason why I am currently interested in technology is because of how you can implement thought into action. I always had a creative mind and always wondered what the world would be like If we humans made use of most of our brains and developed a lot. Also, I believe in a creative world where humans logically aren't meant to suffer by any means and I think to do so we can reduce that propositionally by using technological means, that's how I plan to be of positive impact. Surely but slowly this will come to pass, this has already been slightly implemented throught mobile phones which makes life 70% less cumbersome for us by completing basic tasks such as preventing us from forgetting major events and helping us keep tags on major threads. We also have the latest machinery which has slightly reduced physical labor for most humans.
Nevertheless, as time goes on I hope as an information scientist I can be of the most positive impact by aiding in carrying out rigorous research that could be of benefit to individuals suffering from major "incurable" diseases such as Epilepsy( suffering from it myself) and many more.
To conclude, first I would like to apologize ahead of time for any typos and any bad language structuring and next I would like to thank you for this opportunity to share all these thoughts I have about myself all locked away in my mind.

1.There are endless challenges I have had to overcome, from sickness to education. The one that seemed most challenging to me was my self-esteem. While growing up I always viewed myself lower than everyeveryone else regarless of what i had accomplished I never felt relevant and I never thought I was good enought to be relevant. To be honest I always taught everyone around me was better than me, but as I grew older into my later teens and started interacting with more people, I realised alot of people felt that way about themselves too!. Alot of people felt insecure or hated certain parts of their bodies. And this is when realization hit me that no one is perfect and that it is ok to not be "perfect" . Since then i have held to that, it has helped me whenever i tried comparing myself to other people especially now that i am in my 20s it gets tougher seeing my friends accomolishing things I have not but I have in mind "Everyone is on their own journey to their own certain destination".
2.I recently got amitted to University of maryland to study Information Science, I am grateful for this opportunity. This scholarship will help me reduce my current loans and bills which will indirectly contribute to my success as it will enable me to focus on my studies. For my associate degree, I worked Full-time while being Full-time at college too. I am hoping this year it will be a litlle less stressful.
3.I love playing volleyball, I am hoping to get accepted into University of Maryland's female volleyball team when i transferm there. I also enjoy reading books such as supense and sci-fi. My other interest includes backend programming, I enjoy working with databases. And finally i love martial arts.
