Bio

Lina Altaan Al Hariri is a student at the University of Rhode Island, where she is studying International Studies and Diplomacy, Gender and Women's Studies, and Arabic. She is particularly interested in law and policy-making, inspired by her personal experience growing up in Syria and having to leave due to the Syrian Revolution of 2011. Lina is a primary candidate for the U.S. Foreign Service Internship Program for the summers of 2023 and 2024. She also served as a research participant in a project called "CRIGHTS: Coding Human Rights Abuses Around the World." In this role, she engaged in content analysis, turning government and NGO human rights reports into data. She developed coding rules by investigating international human rights laws to see what governments are tasked with providing for their citizens and created rules for interpreting tricky cases. Additionally, Lina and other research assistants discussed measurement theories and debates about measuring human rights. Lina is also the winner of the 2021-2022 writing award in advocacy at URI. In her award-winning piece, Altaan Al Hariri wrote her personal story in film scene format, advocating for fighting against dictatorship for freedom.
