La Santana Scholarship
Growing up in Cuba, I always knew that I wanted to pursue a career health in care. However, the opportunities for education and advancement in the field were limited. Despite the challenges, I was determined to achieve my dream and provide help to those who needed it the most. So, I made the difficult decision to leave my home country and pursue a better education in the United States.
As I began my journey toward becoming a nurse, I discovered my true passion for helping underserved communities. My wildest dream as a nurse is to one day return to Cuba and provide access to quality healthcare to those who have been historically marginalized and overlooked. I want to be able to offer my skills and expertise to help improve the health and well-being of the people in my home country. To make this dream a reality, I am currently pursuing a nurse practitioner education. This will allow me to have a greater impact on patient care and provide more comprehensive treatment plans. As a Nurse Practitioner, I will be able to work independently and provide a range of services, including diagnosing and treating illnesses, prescribing medications, and ordering diagnostic tests. Additionally, I plan to use my education to advocate for policy changes that improve access to healthcare in underserved communities. This includes supporting efforts to increase funding for community health centers and expanding Medicaid coverage to more low-income individuals.
I also believe in the power of education and outreach. I plan to work with community organizations and schools in Cuba to provide health education and raise awareness about preventive care. By empowering individuals with knowledge about their health and how to care for themselves, we can work towards preventing chronic illnesses and improving overall health outcomes. Of course, this dream comes with its own set of challenges. Cuba has a complex healthcare system and there are often shortages of medical supplies and equipment. However, I believe that with dedication and collaboration, we can work towards improving the system and providing better care for all.
In addition to my dream of providing healthcare in Cuba, I also have a passion for global health. I hope to one day work with international organizations to provide healthcare and medical relief in areas affected by natural disasters, conflict, or other crises. I believe that every individual deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of their background or circumstances. Overall, my dreams as a nurse are big, but I know that with hard work and determination, they can become a reality. I am grateful for the opportunities that I have had in the United States to pursue my education and gain valuable experience in the field. I am excited to use my knowledge and skills to make a difference in the world and give back to my community in Cuba.
Kevin R. Mabee Memorial Scholarship
Growing up, I struggled with my weight. I was always the chubby kid, and as I got older, my weight only continued to creep up. I tried countless diets and exercise plans, but nothing seemed to work. I felt frustrated and discouraged, and I began to think that maybe I was just destined to be overweight for the rest of my life. It wasn't until I started nursing school that I began to learn more about nutrition and the impact that diet has on our health. I learned about the benefits of a plant-based diet and how it can help prevent and even reverse chronic diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
As someone who has struggled with my weight my entire life, these health benefits were incredibly appealing to me. So, I decided to give a plant-based diet a try. I started slowly, cutting out meat and dairy and incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into my meals. At first, it was a bit of a challenge. I had to learn how to cook new recipes and find new sources of protein. But as I continued on this journey, I started to notice changes in my body. For one thing, I had more energy. I no longer felt sluggish and tired all the time, and I didn't need as much caffeine to get through the day. I also noticed that my skin looked clearer and my hair looked healthier. And, of course, I began to lose weight. But it wasn't just about the physical changes. Eating a plant-based diet also helped me feel more connected to my food and the planet. I started shopping at farmers' markets and learning about where my food comes from. I also began to feel more mindful about what I was putting into my body, and I started to appreciate the flavors and textures of different fruits and vegetables.
As a nurse, I've seen firsthand the impact that diet can have on our health. I've seen patients who have suffered from chronic diseases that could have been prevented or managed with a healthier diet. And I've also seen patients who have made lifestyle changes and seen incredible improvements in their health. That's why I'm passionate about sharing my journey and encouraging others to try a plant-based diet. I've started a blog where I share my favorite recipes and tips for eating healthy on a budget. I've also started hosting cooking classes and workshops where I teach people how to cook delicious plant-based meals.
I know that making a change like this can be intimidating, but it's important to remember that every small step counts. Even if you can't go 100% plant-based, incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet can make a big difference. And if you do decide to go all-in, know that there is a community of people out there who can support you and cheer you on. Overall, switching to a plant-based diet has been one of the finest things I've ever done for my health and well-being. I've not only dropped weight, but I've also developed a greater respect for the food I consume and the influence it has on my health and the environment. And, as a nurse, I'm delighted to share this information and assist people in leading the healthiest and happiest lives possible.

As a nurse, I am committed to creating a positive environmental impact on my local and global communities through the lens of wellness and hospitality. Over the next five years, I plan to take a variety of actions to reduce my environmental footprint and promote sustainability in the healthcare industry.
One of the key areas where I believe I can make a positive impact is the area of waste reduction. In many healthcare settings, there is a lot of unnecessary waste generated on a daily. This can include things like single-use medical supplies, excess packaging, and disposable linens. To address this issue, I plan to advocate for the use of reusable or recyclable alternatives wherever possible. For example, instead of using disposable plastic cups in patient rooms, we could provide patients with reusable cups that can be washed and sterilized between uses. I also plan to work with my colleagues to identify areas where we can reduce excess packaging and find more sustainable alternatives for disposable supplies.
Another area where I plan to focus my efforts is in promoting healthier and more sustainable food options. In many healthcare settings, there is a heavy reliance on processed and packaged foods that are high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. This not only contributes to chronic disease but also harms the environment due to the energy and resources required to produce and transport these products. To address this issue, I plan to work with the hospital's nutrition and dietary departments to identify healthier and more sustainable food options for patients and staff. This could include sourcing more locally produced foods, reducing meat consumption, and promoting plant-based options.
In addition to reducing waste and promoting healthier food options, I plan to create a more welcoming and sustainable environment for patients and their families. This could involve creating green spaces for patients to enjoy, reducing energy consumption through more efficient lighting and HVAC systems, and using non-toxic cleaning products to create a healthier indoor environment. By promoting a more sustainable and hospitable environment, we can create a more positive experience for patients and their families, as well as reduce our environmental impact.
Finally, I believe that as a nurse, I have a responsibility to educate and inspire others to make positive changes in their own lives and communities. Over the next five years, I plan to develop educational resources and programs that promote sustainable living and wellness. This could include workshops on reducing waste, cooking healthy and sustainable meals, and promoting active transportation like biking and walking. By engaging with patients and their families, as well as the broader community, I hope to create a culture of sustainability and wellness that extends beyond the walls of the hospital.
In conclusion, as a nurse, I am committed to creating a positive environmental impact on my local and global communities through the lens of wellness and hospitality. Over the next five years, I plan to focus on waste reduction, promoting healthier and more sustainable food options, creating a welcoming and sustainable environment for patients and their families, and promoting education and inspiration for sustainable living. By taking these actions, I believe that I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of my patients and the health of our planet.

As a child, watching my grandmother take care of my grandfather after his stroke was a powerful experience. I saw the transformative impact that nursing can have on a patient's life, and I knew that I wanted to be a part of that. Now, as a nursing student in the BSN program at AdventHealth University, I am one step closer to achieving my dream. Working as a CNA has been an invaluable experience for me, and it has allowed me to see the impact of nursing firsthand. I have been able to work with patients of all ages and backgrounds, and I have seen the difference that compassionate care can make in their lives.
Through my caregiving experience, I have developed a deep sense of compassion and empathy for others. I have learned to put myself in the shoes of my patients and their families and to provide care that is not just medically sound, but also emotionally supportive. I have also learned the importance of communication in nursing. It is not just about knowing the medical jargon or procedures, but also about being able to communicate effectively with patients and their families. As a result, I have become a better listener and communicator. My caregiving experience has also shown me the importance of dedication, hard work, and perseverance. Nursing is a demanding profession that requires a lot of sacrifice and commitment. However, the rewards of seeing patients recover and return to their normal lives make it all worth it. I have also learned that nursing is a lifelong learning process. The field is constantly evolving, and it is up to nurses to stay current with the latest developments to provide the best possible care for their patients. In addition to shaping my career aspirations, my caregiving experience has also impacted my personal goals and journey. It has given me a sense of purpose and direction, and it has shown me that I can make a difference in the world. It has also helped me develop a strong sense of self-identity. I am proud to be a caregiver, and I know that nursing is a profession that aligns with my values and beliefs.
Overall, my caregiving experience has been transformative, and it has inspired me to become the best nurse that I can be. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked as a CNA for the past three years, and I know that this experience will serve as a foundation for my future career as a nurse. I am excited to see where this journey takes me, and I know that I will continue to learn and grow as I work to provide the best possible care for my patients.

Growing up, my grandfather was an integral part of my life. He was always present at family gatherings, offering wisdom and guidance whenever we needed it. However, everything changed when he suffered a stroke that left him unable to communicate or move his limbs properly. The once-vibrant man was now dependent on others for his basic needs.
It was a difficult time for my family as we struggled to come to terms with my grandfather's new reality. However, my grandmother, who was a nurse, stepped up to take care of him. She worked tirelessly, day and night, to ensure that my grandfather received the best possible care. She was patient, kind, and compassionate, and her efforts were not lost on me. Watching my grandmother care for my grandfather inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. I saw firsthand the impact that healthcare professionals can have on the lives of their patients and their families. I was amazed by the level of expertise and dedication that my grandmother demonstrated, and I knew that I wanted to follow in her footsteps.
My goal is to pursue an advanced certification or degree in nursing so that I can specialize in critical care nursing. I believe that this field presents unique challenges and opportunities to make a positive impact on the lives of patients and their families. In critical care nursing, patients are often in a state of acute illness or injury, and they require specialized care and attention. As a critical care nurse, I aim to provide exceptional care to my patients. I will work closely with them and their families to provide education and support throughout their treatment and recovery process. I believe that providing compassionate care and emotional support is just as important as providing medical treatment. My ultimate goal is to become an expert in critical care nursing and to help improve patient outcomes through advanced practice and innovative nursing techniques. I am excited about the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of my patients and their families, and I am grateful to my grandmother for inspiring me to pursue this noble profession.
In conclusion, witnessing my grandmother care for my grandfather during his illness was a life-changing experience that inspired me to become a nurse. By pursuing an advanced certification or degree in critical care nursing, I hope to make a positive impact on the lives of my patients and their families and to continue the legacy of compassion and expertise that my grandmother instilled in me.
Harry & Mary Sheaffer Scholarship
As a future nurse, I believe that my unique talents and skills can help build a more empathetic and understanding global community. One of my primary goals as a nurse will be to provide compassionate care to my patients, regardless of their background or circumstances.
One way that I plan to achieve this is by taking the time to understand each patient's individual needs and concerns. This includes not only their physical health but also their emotional and psychological well-being. I recognize that every patient is unique, and therefore requires personalized care and attention. By treating each patient as an individual, and not just a medical case, I can help to build a more empathetic and understanding global community.
In addition, I plan to be an advocate for my patients. This means standing up for their rights and ensuring that they receive the highest quality care possible. Whether it is through addressing concerns with other healthcare professionals or working with community organizations to promote better health outcomes, I believe that I can help make a positive impact on the lives of my patients.
Another way that I plan to use my unique talents and skills to build a more empathetic and understanding global community is by focusing on cultural competency. As a nurse, I recognize the importance of understanding and respecting cultural differences. By taking the time to learn about my patients' cultural backgrounds, traditions, and beliefs, I can provide care that is more effective and meaningful. This includes being aware of potential communication barriers, such as language or cultural differences, and adapting my approach to ensure that each patient feels comfortable and understood.
Furthermore, I believe that as a nurse, I can make a positive impact on the global community by promoting health and wellness through education. This includes not only providing patients with information about their own health but also educating the broader community about the importance of healthy habits and disease prevention. By sharing my knowledge and expertise with others, I can help build a more informed and health-conscious global community.
Ultimately, my goal as a future nurse is to be an agent of positive change, both for my patients and for the broader community. I recognize that this is a challenging task and that it will require a great deal of hard work and dedication. However, I am confident that with my unique talents and skills, and with the support of other healthcare professionals and community members, I can help to build a more empathetic and understanding global community, one patient at a time.
Wellness Warriors Scholarship
Being a nursing student can be a rewarding but challenging experience, with rigorous coursework and demanding clinical rotations. As such, I must prioritize my wellness, as I recognize that I cannot effectively care for others if I do not take care of myself first.
One way I prioritize self-care is by engaging in activities that help me relax and recharge. Reading, exercising, and spending time with loved ones are a few of the things that help me feel refreshed and energized. These activities allow me to take a break from the demands of school and clinical rotations, which can be mentally and physically exhausting.
I also make it a point to practice stress management techniques regularly. Mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, and yoga are my go-to methods for reducing stress and staying centered. These techniques help me to stay calm and focused even during high-pressure situations, which is essential in the field of nursing.
Getting enough sleep is also crucial for me to function at my best. During busy periods, it can be tempting to sacrifice sleep to study or complete assignments. However, I have found that getting a good night's sleep is key to feeling rested and alert during the day. I aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night, and I prioritize my sleep schedule by setting aside dedicated time for rest.
In addition to taking care of my mental and emotional health, I also prioritize my physical health by choosing nutritious foods and staying hydrated. Eating foods that are rich in lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables gives me the energy and nutrients I need to power through long days of classes and clinical rotations. Staying hydrated is also important, as it helps me to stay alert and focused throughout the day.
Finally, building a strong support network of peers and mentors is essential for my wellness. Connecting with classmates who are going through similar experiences and seeking advice from mentors who have more experience in the field helps me to stay motivated, focused, and positive. Having people to lean on during challenging times can make all the difference in my ability to cope with stress and maintain my personal wellness.
In conclusion, prioritizing self-care is crucial for my success as a nursing student and for providing excellent patient care. By engaging in activities that help me relax, practicing stress management techniques, getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, and building a support network, I can stay mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy. I believe that these practices should be a priority for all healthcare professionals, as taking care of ourselves allows us to provide the best possible care to our patients.
