Bio

I believe that learning is a life long journey, but beyond just simply to learn something, it is the application of what we learnt to benefit a cause that matters either to the society or to ourselves. As a leader, coach, mentor, and consultant, or superior, subordinate, and peer, these are what I impress upon people. Everyone comes with different perspectives, and it is through these different perspectives that new ideas are born, so long as we apply our knowledge and skills to challenge mindsets and set a vision that everyone can work towards. After a seemingly long career in the military and trying my hands in FMCG as well as the food & beverage industry, I reflected upon the successes and failures of my past, my strengths and weaknesses, and it dawned upon me that I am happiest and most satisfied when I am helping others. Whether it is about helping others improve in their skills, helping others with their issues, or helping others learn about my products. As such, I have embarked on a new journey of helping others learn. Now I help others learn new knowledge and skills as an adjunct lecturer, and I will also be learning to help others learn about themselves and learning to cope with their distress and mental health conditions as a doctoral student in clinical psychology. Learning never stops.

    Mental Health Importance Scholarship
In the bustling rhythm of life, where the demands of work, relationships, and personal aspirations constantly vie for our attention, it is easy to overlook the sanctuary of our minds. Yet, I firmly believe that mental health is the cornerstone of our overall well-being. Our mental state influences every facet of our existence, shaping our perceptions, decisions, and interactions. Understanding and nurturing our mental health is not just a personal responsibility but a societal imperative. In this essay, I will delve into the reasons why mental health is of paramount importance and discuss the strategies I employ to maintain my mental wellness. Mental health is pivotal because it directly affects our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. A robust mental state empowers us to handle stress effectively, make rational decisions, and maintain healthy relationships. Conversely, neglecting mental health can lead to a plethora of issues such as anxiety, depression, and diminished self-esteem. Moreover, mental health problems are not isolated concerns; they ripple into our communities, affecting our families, friends, and colleagues. Addressing mental health, therefore, is not just an act of self-preservation; it is a compassionate gesture toward those we love and care about. To safeguard my mental well-being, I have adopted a holistic approach. First and foremost, self-awareness forms the foundation of my mental health regimen. Understanding my emotions, triggers, and thought patterns allows me to respond to challenges with resilience and grace. This self-awareness is cultivated through mindfulness practices, meditation, and journaling, enabling me to acknowledge and process my emotions constructively. Additionally, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial. In today’s hyper-connected world, it is easy to succumb to the pressures of work and technology. Setting boundaries and allocating time for relaxation, hobbies, and social interactions rejuvenates my mind, providing the necessary respite to navigate life’s complexities. Physical activity is another cornerstone of my mental health maintenance routine. Exercise not only keeps my body in shape but also releases endorphins, the body’s natural stress relievers. Engaging in regular physical activity acts as a powerful antidote to anxiety and depression, boosting my overall mood and confidence. Furthermore, nurturing meaningful relationships is instrumental in fortifying my mental health. Social connections provide emotional support, companionship, and a sense of belonging. Sharing experiences, laughter, and even vulnerabilities with trusted friends and family creates a support network that acts as a buffer against life’s challenges. Equally important is seeking professional help when needed. Just as we consult doctors for physical ailments, mental health professionals play a vital role in diagnosing and treating mental health issues. Removing the stigma associated with therapy and counselling encourages open dialogue about mental health, fostering a more supportive and understanding society. Moreover, continuous learning and creative expression fuel my mental agility. Engaging in intellectually stimulating activities, pursuing hobbies, and exploring new interests stimulate my mind, preventing stagnation and fostering a sense of fulfilment. In conclusion, mental health is the bedrock upon which our lives are built. By acknowledging its significance, we pave the way for a more compassionate society that prioritizes the well-being of its individuals. My commitment to mental wellness encompasses self-awareness, work-life balance, physical activity, meaningful relationships, professional support, continuous learning, and creative expression. In embracing these practices, I not only nurture my mental health but contribute to a collective ethos that recognizes the intrinsic value of every individual’s well-being. As we invest in our mental health, we sow the seeds of a healthier, happier, and more harmonious world for ourselves and generations to come
    Darclei V. McGregor Memorial Scholarship
The world is in the midst of a severe mental health crisis, affecting people of all ages. The statistics are alarming, indicating a widespread issue that demands urgent attention and action. According to the American Psychological Association, mental illnesses are pervasive in the United States, with over 50% of the population expected to be diagnosed with a mental disorder at some point in their lives. Shockingly, 1 in 5 Americans experiences mental illness within a given year, with a similar ratio found in children, many of whom grapple with seriously debilitating mental illnesses. Furthermore, 1 in 25 Americans faces the challenges of severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. The crisis is devastating our youth, with suicide ranking as the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 10-14. The situation is worsening, with the rate of adults experiencing suicidal ideation steadily increasing since 2011-2012. In 2022, 4.58% of adults reported serious thoughts of suicide, marking a disturbing rise of 664,000 people from the previous year. The mental health crisis has deeply impacted vulnerable populations, particularly children and adolescents. According to the CDC, the rate of mental health issues in young people has risen dramatically, with many facing debilitating conditions that affect their daily lives and prospects. This crisis is not isolated to the young; the geriatric population, too, faces mental health challenges due to factors like isolation, loss, and declining physical health. The burden of care for these individuals, often falling on their families and communities, is immense, straining the social fabric and healthcare resources. Compounding the crisis is the shortage of qualified mental health providers. The Health Resources and Services Administration’s projection that the United States needs to add 10,000 mental healthcare providers to each of seven separate mental health professions by 2025 is alarming. This shortage severely impedes the timely and effective delivery of mental health services to those in need, exacerbating the crisis further. Even with the advent of telehealth, while an added avenue to seek mental health services, the provision of service is riddled with disparity in service quality and biased towards those who can afford telecommunication devices or are technology literate. In the face of this crisis, the decision to switch careers from organizational and performance psychology to clinical psychology is deeply personal and rooted in a desire to make a meaningful difference in the more vulnerable populations. Witnessing the staggering statistics and the human suffering behind them has been a catalyst for this transition. It is no longer enough to optimize workplace performance when a significant portion of the population is grappling with mental health issues. Without a well-adjusted and healthy future workforce, there will be further downstream impacts for any society and at the workplace. The shortage of mental health providers, as highlighted by the Health Resources and Services Administration, underscores the urgent need for professionals who can address the multifaceted challenges posed by mental illnesses. The field of clinical psychology has always held a profound place in my heart, even though I was an organisational and performance psychologist in the military. As a dedicated advocate for mental health, I have been deeply inspired by the potential of clinical psychology/health psychology to make a transformative difference in the lives of individuals and communities. In the intricate tapestry of human existence, where emotions weave the very fabric of our souls, mental health stands as a cornerstone, holding the delicate balance between despair and hope. In the realm of mental health services, the significance of those qualities that were exhibited by the late Darclei V. McGregor cannot be overstated. It is in these qualities that the true essence of healing resides, creating a sanctuary for those in need, fostering resilience, and igniting the flickering flames of hope in the darkest of times. It is through enigmatic figures like the late Darclei, that I too wish to emulate. In a world often marked by its unrelenting pace and unyielding demands, it is kindness that serves as the gentle reminder of our shared humanity. A kind word, a listening ear, or a reassuring presence can work wonders, dissolving the isolation that shrouds many struggling with mental health issues. The provision of genuine care transcends the boundaries of diagnoses and labels, recognising the unique narratives and lived experiences that shape each person’s reality. Through compassion, judgments dissolve, and prejudices fade away, making room for understanding and acceptance, and fostering a connection that transcends the limitations of language and culture. For these very reasons and virtues, we must pave the way for a world where mental health services are not just transactional but transformative for individuals and communities, where every act of kindness reverberates across hearts and minds, creating a tapestry of healing and resilience that spans generations. Many services are offered for individuals, it is now time to allow these virtues to be felt by the communities that one lives in. One of the pivotal reasons for my career switch to clinical psychology is the imperative need for more research to be done in community intervention programs. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 450 million people worldwide suffer from mental health disorders, making it a leading cause of disability. Yet, despite the staggering numbers, mental health services are often inaccessible, particularly in marginalized communities. Research indicates that only 25% of people with mental disorders receive adequate treatment, and this number is significantly lower in low and middle-income countries, underscoring the global disparity in mental healthcare access (WHO, 2021). Addressing this gap requires comprehensive community-based intervention strategies. Research efforts can focus on identifying culturally appropriate interventions, understanding the social determinants of mental health, and evaluating the effectiveness of community-driven programs. By investing in research beyond the laboratory, policymakers and mental health professionals can develop evidence-based interventions that cater to the unique needs of diverse communities, ensuring that mental health support reaches those who need it the most. Integrative health psychology is an emerging field that integrates psychological principles with holistic approaches to healthcare. This interdisciplinary perspective acknowledges the intricate connection between mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Integrative health psychology emphasizes the importance of addressing the whole person, considering not only psychological factors but also lifestyle, social, and environmental influences. Research in integrative health psychology has demonstrated promising outcomes in various health conditions, including chronic pain, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. For instance, mindfulness-based interventions have shown significant reductions in stress and anxiety levels, leading to improved overall health outcomes (Garland et al., 2017). Integrative approaches emphasize the collaboration between psychologists, healthcare providers, and complementary therapists, fostering a holistic healthcare model that prioritizes patient well-being. My belief in the significance of clinical psychology is deeply intertwined with my commitment to advocating for vulnerable populations, especially children, adolescents, and the geriatric community. Research indicates that mental health problems often surface during adolescence, with 50% of mental disorders beginning by the age of 14 (Kessler et al., 2005). Early intervention is crucial in mitigating the long-term impact of these disorders, highlighting the importance of specialized mental health support tailored to the unique needs of young individuals. Similarly, the geriatric population faces specific mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. With the global population ageing rapidly, addressing the mental health needs of older adults is paramount. Research has shown that psychotherapy and social interventions can significantly enhance the quality of life for geriatric individuals, promoting emotional well-being and social connectedness (Pinquart & Forstmeier, 2012). The mental health crisis in the United States is an urgent call to action for society, policymakers, and individuals alike. We need increased awareness, funding, and support for mental health services. Additionally, efforts should focus on early intervention and destigmatizing mental illnesses to encourage affected individuals to seek help without fear of judgment. My journey from organizational psychology to clinical psychology is a response to this call, driven by a profound sense of responsibility to contribute meaningfully to alleviating the suffering caused by mental health issues. My inspiration to pursue a career in clinical psychology is deeply rooted in the urgent need for more research in community intervention, the evolving landscape of integrative health psychology, and my unwavering commitment to supporting vulnerable populations, particularly children, adolescents, and the geriatric community. By investing in research, advocating for integrative approaches, and focusing on specialized interventions for vulnerable groups, clinical psychology can play a pivotal role in transforming lives and communities. As I embark on this journey, I am driven by the belief that every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves access to high-quality mental healthcare, and I am dedicated to contributing to this noble cause through my chosen career path. Together, as a society, we must address this crisis with empathy, understanding, and comprehensive, accessible mental health care to build a healthier future for all.
