One night, well past my bedtime, I stumbled upon YouTube videos of attorney and business consultant Brett Cenkus describing the law of nations.
That’s where I fell in love. No, not with Brett but with the way he articulated how entrepreneurs develop global franchises.
Not long after, I sat down on a Saturday afternoon with a generous bowl of ice cream and an excessive amount of chocolate syrup to watch a movie recommended by Brett called The Founder. The film was about McDonald’s growth from a small struggling business to a multinational corporation. It made me think about how important entrepreneurship is to my community as it empowers individuals to become economically independent and self-sustaining.
Since then I have long been passionate about entrepreneurship, which is the cornerstone of all businesses and can create wealth, improve the standard of living, and the quality of life. Entrepreneurs help drive economic and social change through innovation. I hope to relate my entrepreneurial spirit to international trade and its impact on the economic and social development of underserved nations.
And growing up, I was taught both English and Yoruba. By the time I was five years old, my parents
enrolled my siblings and me into a French immersion school. When I was twelve, I began
learning Spanish. At thirteen, my cousin started to teach me Russian. By the time I was sixteen, I
discovered anime and started learning Japanese through the countless episodes I watched. Over
time, I developed an affinity for foreign languages and cultures and subsequently studied abroad
in Montreal, Canada, and Lagos, Nigeria where I learned to appreciate the benefits of cultural
immersion. The more I traveled, the more I developed an interest in the trade and economic
growth of various countries.
These experiences prompted my interest in researching potential careers. I am specifically drawn
to international law and global trade. Having traveled to Nigeria, in particular, I wanted to better
understand the economy of that nation-state and how it affects the financial literacy and upward
mobility of its citizens. I also wanted to understand how that economy drives entrepreneurship,
trade and whether it empowers individuals to ultimately become financially independent and
self-sustaining.
As a result of my travels and studies, I am passionate about entrepreneurship as it relates to
international trade and its impact on the economic and social development of underserved
nations. I desire to explore the impact of government policies on business.
