Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat Scholarship
The Sorting Hat's decision in assigning a student to one of the four Hogwarts houses is a momentous one, guided by an individual's innate qualities and inclinations. Among these houses, Slytherin stands as a distinct emblem of ambition, cunning, resourcefulness, and leadership. While the house has often been mischaracterized due to its association with dark wizards, a more nuanced understanding reveals that Slytherin is, in fact, the perfect house for someone with the right qualities. Ambition is a driving force that propels individuals to reach their goals and strive for excellence. Slytherin, with its emphasis on ambition, provides an ideal environment for nurturing and harnessing this quality. In this house, students are surrounded by like-minded peers who understand the value of pushing boundaries and seeking success. This competitive atmosphere encourages growth, innovation, and a constant pursuit of self-improvement. Slytherins learn that mediocrity is not an option, and their ambition drives them to stand out and make meaningful contributions to the wizarding world. Cunning and resourcefulness, revered traits within Slytherin, foster adaptability and creativity. Slytherins understand the importance of finding unconventional solutions to complex problems, a skill that proves invaluable in a world of magic and mystery. Resourcefulness is a hallmark of successful wizards, and Slytherins are well-equipped to navigate the intricacies of spellcasting, potion-making, and magical creatures through their ability to think on their feet and find innovative solutions. Leadership emerges as a central theme within Slytherin, aligning with the house's penchant for producing influential figures. Slytherins possess the charisma, strategic thinking, and confidence that are essential in guiding others. Through a combination of ambition and cunning, they rise to positions of authority, not only within the house but also in broader wizarding society. Slytherins can inspire and rally others, shaping the course of events with their strong leadership skills. Critics have often unfairly associated Slytherin with malevolent intentions due to its historical ties to dark wizards. However, it is essential to recognize that every house contains individuals of varying moral inclinations. The qualities Slytherin values—ambition, cunning, resourcefulness, and leadership—are not inherently evil. It is the choices individuals make that define their character. Many admirable figures, such as Severus Snape and Andromeda Tonks, hailed from Slytherin, demonstrating that the house is not a breeding ground for darkness but a platform for diverse and dynamic personalities. In conclusion, Slytherin stands as an exceptional choice for sorting due to its celebration of ambition, cunning, resourcefulness, and leadership. These qualities empower individuals to excel in the wizarding world and beyond. While the house's reputation may be tarnished by historical misunderstandings, a closer examination reveals that Slytherin offers a unique blend of traits that contribute to the holistic development of its members. To be sorted into Slytherin is to embark on a journey that challenges one's limits, hones one's skills, and prepares one for a future of influence and accomplishment.

In high school, I participated in several sports, clubs, and activities that have challenged me and helped shape who I am today. Such as a club called DECA (Distributive Education Club of America) where I learned more about marketing, entrepreneurship, and other valuable skills such as public speaking. In this club, I am also the Vice President of Special Events where I organized multiple club events such as Pumpkin and Pizza, and our blanket drive where we prepared food and gave it to our local homeless community. But, this isn’t the only event that I helped organize. I am also involved in my Student Government Association (SGA) where I help organize events such as our homecoming dance where I was the head of the decoration committee. In this club, I was also the secretary of my 10th-grade class and I am currently the Executive Officer of Public Relations. I also helped organize the Week Of Thanks where we collected and prepared gifts for the teachers, administrators, SLOs, and janitorial staff to thank them for all that they do during the Thanksgiving holiday season. The act of being involved in and making contributions to the local community can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Not only does this greatly improve the lives of those within the local community, but those who get involved often feel a strong sense of pride and accomplishment for their efforts. While these are only two of the clubs that I am currently a part of and have participated in high school would say they have had the most impact on my growth as a person in the last four years of high school and hope by doing just some of these activities we made that much of an impact on the community as well. However, I don’t plan to stop positively impacting my community after high school or college. With my degree in computer science, I hope to go down the career path of cybersecurity, particularly in the area of cybercrime, and make a positive impact on my community and the world. As technology continues to advance and evolve, so too does our reliance on the internet for day-to-day tasks. With this increased reliance on the internet, it is essential to ensure the safety and security of our internet-connected devices and the data they store. This serves as a primary focus of cybersecurity and is necessary to prevent malicious actors from eventuating significant damage. I hope to work for an organization such as the NSA or CIA tracking down criminals and helping protect innocent people from cyberattacks. I also hope to make a positive impact on the world by focusing on strengthening cybersecurity measures to protect individuals, organizations, and critical infrastructure from cyber threats. Develop secure systems, encryption algorithms, or tools to detect and prevent cyber attacks, contributing to a safer digital environment. But, as AI tools become more prevalent in our society I hope to use my skills to Ensure the responsible and ethical development of artificial intelligence. Focus on creating AI systems that are unbiased, transparent, and accountable, while considering the social implications and potential risks associated with AI technologies. I truly believe this is what I’m supposed to do in life. I have always had an interest in the area of criminology and combining that with my love of coding and computer science makes cybersecurity the best career choice for me.

One technology that inspires me about how technology can make the world a better place is renewable energy. Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower are transforming the way we produce and consume energy, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Renewable energy is not a new technology, but the advancements in technology have made it more efficient, cost-effective, and accessible. For example, solar panels have become more affordable and efficient, with the ability to generate electricity even in low-light conditions. Similarly, wind turbines have become more advanced, with larger blades and better designs that can generate more power from the wind. The use of renewable energy is already making a positive impact on the environment by reducing carbon emissions and air pollution. According to the International Energy Agency, renewable energy sources accounted for 72% of new power capacity additions in 2019, with solar and wind energy leading the way. As more countries invest in renewable energy and shift away from fossil fuels, we can expect to see even greater reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Renewable energy also has the potential to bring electricity to communities that are currently without access to reliable and affordable energy sources. In many developing countries, renewable energy is becoming the primary source of energy due to its affordability and availability. For example, in India, the government has set a target of generating 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022, which will help to bring electricity to millions of people who currently lack access. In conclusion, renewable energy is a technology that inspires me because of its ability to make the world a better place. It has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and bring electricity to communities that are currently without access to reliable and affordable energy sources. As we continue to invest in renewable energy and improve the technology behind it, we can expect to see even greater benefits in the years to come.
    Curry & C/O ‘22 Scholarship
Throughout my high school years, I experienced numerous emotions and tested my limits in various areas. From participating in sports and clubs to challenging myself academically, my four years in high school were truly full of growth and development. I was often driven by the "echo" of my voice, as well as by the encouragement of my friends, family, and teachers, who served as daily reminders that I could accomplish everything I set my mind to. But, there is one moment in particular that I will remember for the rest of my life because of how I pushed myself out of my comfort zone to achieve a goal. It was the beginning of my junior year and my sister was trying to convince me to compete in DECA. While I have been in the club for the last three years I had never competed before. At first, I said no because it involved public speaking which was a problem. After all, for me, public speaking has always been quite intimidating. But, even though I voiced my fears that my sister didn’t care, she told my mom about her idea and it was a done deal. My mom told me to speak to my DECA advisor about competing. And the next thing you know I was signed up to compete. Even though I was mad at the moment I didn’t realize I would be forever grateful for my sister forcing me to compete. Once I spoke to my advisor, Mrs. Godfrey, about competing. I picked an event to compete in; the Retail Merchandising Series Event because I had previous retail experience from working at Kohls's, and felt more comfortable in a category that I at least had some idea about what it was about. Then she gave us practice material that we would need to prepare for the test and the role-play portion. But even with the preparation from the prep sessions and the practice material, I was so nervous the night before the competition I threw up. But, as I was completing my presentation I just remembered everything Mrs. Godfrey told me in my prep sessions and kept telling myself to keep calm and speak clearly and I did. I went on to place 3rd in my event out of six. From this, I learned that I could do anything I set my mind to and that maybe every once in a while I should listen to my sister.

Driving under the influence (DUI) is an alarming issue that poses grave risks to individuals and society. The consequences of DUI incidents are far-reaching, resulting in loss of life, injuries, emotional trauma, and economic burdens. To mitigate these devastating effects, it is imperative to comprehend the gravity of DUIs and implement comprehensive strategies for prevention. By combining education, legislation, and technological advancements, we can make substantial progress in reducing DUI incidents and safeguarding our communities. First and foremost, DUIs frequently lead to tragic loss of life and debilitating injuries. Impaired drivers lack the necessary coordination, judgment, and reaction time to safely operate a vehicle. Consequently, innocent lives are needlessly cut short, and countless individuals suffer severe injuries, and disabilities, or succumb to their wounds due to impaired driving accidents. In addition to physical harm, DUI incidents inflict long-lasting emotional and psychological impacts. Survivors may endure post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and the psychological burden of survivor's guilt. Furthermore, the trauma experienced by families and loved ones affected by DUI incidents is immeasurable, often causing emotional turmoil that can persist for years. Economically, DUIs impose a significant burden on society. Medical expenses, legal fees, property damage, increased insurance premiums, and lost productivity contribute to the exorbitant costs associated with DUI incidents. These financial ramifications affect not only the individuals involved but also taxpayers and society at large. Prevention Strategies To combat the pervasive issue of DUIs, the implementation of effective prevention strategies is paramount. Education and Awareness Campaigns constitute a crucial component of DUI prevention. Comprehensive public education initiatives should target individuals of all age groups, emphasizing the dangers of impaired driving, the detrimental effects of alcohol and drugs on driving ability, and the importance of responsible decision-making. Collaborative efforts between schools, community organizations, and law enforcement can effectively deliver this critical information, fostering a culture of responsibility and informed choices. Strict Legislation and Enforcement play a vital role in curbing DUI incidents. Governments must enact and rigorously enforce zero-tolerance policies for underage drinking and driving. Additionally, the implementation of harsh penalties, such as license suspensions, substantial fines, mandatory rehabilitation programs, and the mandatory installation of ignition interlock devices for repeat offenders, can serve as strong deterrents against DUI offenses. Promoting the use of Ridesharing and Alternative Transportation is essential in preventing DUI incidents. Encouraging individuals to utilize ridesharing services, public transportation, or other alternative modes of transportation can significantly reduce the likelihood of impaired driving. Incentives for designated drivers, safe ride programs, and improved public transit options all contribute to providing convenient alternatives to driving under the influence. Technological Advancements offer promising solutions for DUI prevention. Breathalyzer ignition interlock devices, installed in vehicles, require drivers to pass a breathalyzer test before starting the engine. These devices effectively deter individuals from driving under the influence. Moreover, advancements in vehicle safety technologies, such as automated systems that detect impaired driving behavior and provide alerts or intervene if necessary, hold tremendous potential in preventing DUI incidents. The effects of DUIs are far-reaching and deeply impactful, resulting in loss of life, injuries, emotional trauma, and economic burdens. However, through comprehensive prevention strategies, we can mitigate these devastating consequences. Education, strict legislation, alternative transportation options, and technological advancements collectively offer an effective approach to combating DUI incidents. By raising awareness, fostering responsible decision-making, and utilizing available resources, we can build safer communities and save lives. It is our collective responsibility to work together to prevent DUI incidents and create a society where impaired driving is no longer a threat.

Technology is the application of knowledge to reach practical goals in a specifiable and reproducible way. The word technology may also mean the product of such an endeavor. The use of technology is widely prevalent in medicine, science, industry, communication, transportation, and daily life. Technology is a powerful tool that has the capability to make the world a better and more efficient place. From major technological advances such as the invention of the Internet to the small innovations that lead to changes in everyday life, technologies move the world forward. One technology, in particular, that has inspired me is the smartphone. The introduction of smartphones has had vast implications for people. Not only is it a convenient way to communicate with anyone, anywhere, but it also has enabled people to access information quickly and easily, and is becoming more widely used to help with global issues, such as poverty and health crises. Other new technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning are inspiring ways to leverage technology to make the world a better place. By creating machines that can think on their own and perform difficult tasks with high efficiency, AI and ML technologies bridge the gap between limited human capability and limitless machine power. This helps us to think more creatively and solve complex and intractable problems. Furthermore, AI technologies are also being used to create smarter and more efficient systems, such as for the transportation and energy industry, which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions, thereby reducing our impact on the environment. We must continue to be inspired by technological advancement and use it to shift us toward a more hopeful and optimistic future.

In high school, I participated in a number of sports, clubs, and activities that have challenged me and helped shape who I am today. Such as a club called DECA (Distributive Education Club of America) where I learned more about marketing, entrepreneurship, and other valuable skills such as public speaking. In this club, I am also the Vice President of Special Events where I organized multiple club events such as Pumpkin and Pizza, and our blanket drive where we prepare food and gave it to our local homeless community. But, this isn’t the only event that I helped organize I was for a club. I am also involved in my Student Government Association (SGA) where I help organize events such as our homecoming dance where I was the head of the decoration committee. In this club, I was also the secretary of my 10th-grade class and I am currently the Executive Officer of Public Relations. I also help organize the Week Of Thanks where we collected and prepared gifts for the teachers, administrators, SLOs, and janitorial staff to thank them for all that they do during the Thanksgiving holiday season.

Computer Science has become a vital part of the modern world we live in, with technology becoming intrinsic to our lives and our economy in dozens of different ways. It is an incredibly broad and versatile field of study, and studying it can lead to a huge number of exciting and interesting career paths. Not only that but studying computer science provides valuable skills applicable to a wide range of industries and situations. These are just some of the reasons why I’m interested in studying computer science. With my degree in computer science, I hope to go down the career path of cybersecurity, particularly in the area of cybercrime. As technology continues to advance and evolve, so too does our reliance on the internet for day-to-day tasks. With this increased reliance on the internet, it is essential to ensure the safety and security of our internet-connected devices and the data they store. This serves as a primary focus of cybersecurity and is necessary in order to prevent malicious actors from eventuating significant damage. I hope to work for an organization such as the NSA or CIA tracking down criminals and helping protect innocent people from cyberattacks. From receiving my education I hope to make a positive impact on the world. But, even though I voiced my fears my sister didn’t care, she told my mom about her idea and it was a done deal my mom told me to speak to my DECA advisor about competing. And the next thing you know I was signed up to compete. Even though I was mad at the moment I didn’t realize I would be forever grateful for my sister forcing me to compete. Once I spoke to my advisor, Mrs. Godfrey, about competing I picked an event to compete in, then she gave us practice material that we would need to prepare for the test and the role-play portion. But even with the preparation from the practice material, I was so nervous the night before the competition I threw up. But, as I was completing my presentation I just remember everything Mrs. Godfrey told me in my prep sessions and kept telling myself to keep calm and speak clearly and I did. I went on to place 3rd in my event out of six. From this, I learned that I could do anything I set my mind to and that maybe every once in a while I should listen to my sister.

Happiness can be an elusive concept, but it has been captured in words with stunning accuracy in the song "Happiness Is a Butterfly" by Lana Del Rey. This somber yet uplifting song conveys the complexity of what it means to feel happiness in a meaningful way and speaks to a desire to recognize, pursue, and enjoy such a feeling even if it is fleeting. Lana Del Rey's song "Happiness is a Butterfly" considers happiness, taking an analogy of a butterfly being chased only to be eluded. She expresses this idea by using an array of colorful images and layered metaphors ("Lana Del Rey"). Throughout the song, Lana reflects on the fleeting nature of happiness and its reliance on luck and timing, noting that the butterfly "can fly away so suddenly," and that "happiness is a butterfly that, you can rarely catch it without tragedy" ("Lana Del Rey"). She also suggests that happiness is something that one must strive for in order to achieve ("Lana Del Rey"). Ultimately, she conveys the idea that happiness is fragile, constantly striving, and transient in nature. Happiness is a butterfly by Lana Del Rey is a song that speaks to the universal notion of searching for greater joy in life. It draws upon the idea of struggling through obstacles in order to attain the ultimate feeling of contentment and satisfaction. Through this song, Lana Del Rey serves as a powerful reminder that while life can be painful, it is still important to stay focused on the pursuit of happiness. This is why I identify with the song so much no matter what challenges you face in life or how hard life gets I listen to this song and remind myself that happiness is always on the other side.
