Hi, my name is Lauren Duffell. I am from a small town in Alabama. I will be the first person in my family to attend college. I am a Varsity Cheerleader, Varsity Track member, and first chair trumpet. I am in Beta Club, FFA, FBLA, and Mu Alpha Theta. I have been class treasurer for two years. I love giving back to the community. I even have my own fundraiser called, "Love the Lonely". Love the Lonely is an online bake sale fundraiser that I host from October to December, in order to buy gifts for every resident at my local Nursing Home and fulfill the needs of my local animal shelter. There are no set prices, customers donate however much they want to. Each year I have been able to raise over one thousand dollars for my cause. This allows me to buy blankets and sanitary baskets for the Nursing Home. While at the shelter it allows me to buy dog food/cat food, bleach, paper towels, toys, and more. I believe that everyone should feel LOVED and no one should go LONELY. I plan on attending LaGrange College in Georgia for Pre-Vet with a major in Animal Sciences. Then transfer to Auburn University for a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine license. I have been around animals my entire life. From a young age, I knew I wanted to become a Veterinarian. There is no other occupation my heart would enjoy more.

Bold Selfless Acts Scholarship
Love the Lonely is an online bake sale fundraiser that I host from October to December, in order to buy gifts for every resident at my local Nursing Home and fulfill the needs of my local animal shelter. Each year I have been able to raise over one thousand dollars for my cause. The idea for my own fundraiser started when my grandmother was admitted into the Nursing Home around Christmas time. Her roommate did not have any family, so she was going to spend Christmas alone and gift-less. I made sure to spend time with this woman when I visited my grandmother, and I also made sure to get her a gift. I made sure she didn't go lonely. Three years later and I went from being able to only provide for one resident, to over one hundred residents and over thirty animals at my local animal shelter. Even though that may not be your family member receiving the gift, it is someone else's. I feel the need to express the importance of taking care of the old and lonely because everyone gets old. I do this from my heart. It's as easy as remembering the golden rule, “Treat others like you want to be treated”. Along with the gift they receive, they get a Christmas card with something different and meaningful written on each one. I feel that my gifts make them feel special and it is something they can keep with them. Same way with animals, dogs and cats have emotions just like humans, being put in a “prison cell” can get dull and depressing. My gifts allow them to have fun and freshen up their containment space till they find their forever home.

Bold Passion Scholarship
I am passionate about animals. My goal in life and education is to become a Veterinarian. I want to become a Veterinarian because animals are something that I hold close to my heart. My fundraiser “Love the Lonely” provides animals at my local animal shelter with food, blankets, and other items that they may need. I live on a farm with beef cattle and have been helping take care of them since I was old enough to walk. At my aunt's farm, I catch/wrangle goats and pigs so they can receive their proper medications. Even now I like to “diagnose” the animals I have now whenever they are sick or determining if a new lump is cancerous or benign. I myself have three rescue dogs. My very first pet was actually a goat named Tyrone. My next baby would be Brownie the Bull. He is a stunted Angus bull that was born on our farm. I taught him how to climb steps, ramps, and knock on the door. I have always been obsessed with animals and wildlife. I have helped my aunt raise all sorts of animals, including squirrels, turtles, and a possum. In 2019, I got to participate in a C-section on one of my aunt's goats at Auburn University Veterinary Hospital. I plan on attending LaGrange College in Georgia for Pre-Vet with a major in Animal Science. Then transferring to Auburn University for my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. At my practice, I want to offer low-cost neuters and spays to help keep the overpopulation of animals down, thus saving more lives. My heart goes out to animals because they cannot express themselves as humans can. I want to impact the world in a positive way by helping as many animals as possible.

To me, leadership means directing or guiding others. To lead, one must be diligent, understanding, creative, have good problem solving skills, and be a good communicator. Being a leader is important to me because I took the initiative to create and lead my own fundraiser so I can help the “lonely” in my community. My goal in life and education is to become a Veterinarian. I want to become a Veterinarian because animals are something that I hold close to my heart. I live on a farm with beef cattle and have been helping take care of them since I was old enough to walk. This includes bottle feeding, feeding bales of hay, and more. At my aunt's farm, I catch/wrangle goats and pigs so they can receive their proper medications. Running and successfully catching these animals is harder than it looks. My very first pet was actually a goat named Tyrone. He lived in the house with me and kept me company since I am an only child. He was my absolute best friend and he lived for thirteen years. My next baby would be Brownie the Bull. He is a stunted Angus bull that was born on our farm. Whenever it was time for his bottle, I would let him out of the pasture and take him inside the house. He learned how to climb steps, ramps, and even knock on the door. We still have him, he is almost eight years old, still a brat, and as spoiled as ever. Ever since I was little, I have been obsessed with animals and wildlife. I have helped my aunt raise all sorts of animals, including squirrels, turtles, and a possum. Bold Dream Big Scholarship
In my dream life, I will have accomplished my goal of winning Miss Alabama Collegiate America. In my dream life, I will have a major in Animal Sciences from LaGrange College and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine license from Auburn University. I will have graduated college as a large animal Veterinarian. In my dream life, I will be working under the hand of my local Veterinarian, Dr.Barron, saving animals every day. Hopefully, one day I will be in charge. On my land, I will have a small sanctuary of cattle, goats, horses, and dogs. My dream life looks like the typical middle-class family. I see myself with a nice husband, two children, and a farmhouse with twenty acres of land. My children will go to a private school and have a good education. My fundraiser, “Love the Lonely” will have more recognition and have a bigger name than it does now. Love the Lonely will be known all over the state of Alabama.

My favorite scientist is Archimedes because he discovered the relationship between the surface and volume of a sphere, found the formation of a hydrostatic principle (Archimedes principle), and he made the Archimedes Screw- a device for raising water. This is still used in crop irrigation and sewage treatment plants today. It fascinates me that he was so ahead of his time, that nobody understood his work until over a thousand years later, Issac Newton. The funniest thing about him is that it is rumored he ran around the streets of Syracuse naked and fresh from a bath yelling, "Eureka"!

Something I love about myself is my dimples. I have very deep-set dimples on my face. Only about twenty percent of the world's population has cheek dimples. I love them because not that many people have dimples and the reason mine is so deep is because both of my parents have dimples. Too little people's knowledge, dimples are actually a split in the facial zygomaticus major. Dimples can also be seen as a good luck charm. I get compliments all the time from friends, family, and even strangers on who cute they think my dimples are. My grandmother loves to pinch my cheeks so she can see my dimples. I use my dimples to my advantage when competing in pageants. Dimples make me unique and set me apart from other girls I compete against. I love displaying my dimples. In fact, having dimples just gives me another reason to smile.
Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship
A characteristic that I value most about myself is my determination. I have been determined all my life to do the best I possibly can in school and to be the best person possible. This hard work has paid off, as grades are coming to an end of my senior year, I am ranked as Valedictorian, but it is not final yet, not till December 30, 2021. My determination has pushed me to achieve my goals in studies as well as sports. I have been able to obtain a 4.0 unweighted GPA (4.7 weighted) while taking college credit classes, as well as playing three sports, and competing in pageants. My determination has never let me give up, always get back up and push harder. I strive to be the best trumpet player, strongest cheerleader base, and fastest track member at my school. Last year as Miss Alabama High School America, I placed second out of seventeen beautiful girls in the categories of interview, on stage speaking, opening number, gown, and fun fashion. This year I am going back determined to win Alabama and hopefully Nationals. My determination has also led me to start my own fundraiser, "Love the Lonely". Love the Lonely is an online bake sale fundraiser that I host from October to December, in order to buy gifts for every resident at my local Nursing Home and fulfill the needs of my local Animal Shelter. With the help of my family and community, I have been able to raise over one thousand dollars a year for my cause. I am determined to surpass my goal of one thousand dollars and instead make it fifteen hundred this year. I want everyone to feel loved and not be lonely. I believe that this is a good quality to have because most people give up when an obstacle is thrown at them, but not me, I keep going. I was taught from a young age that determination and perseverance will strengthen you and help you better reach your goals in life. Determination sets a good example for not only you but others around you as well. This will help me in my life journey because Vet school is very rigorous. I plan on attending LaGrange College for Pre-Vet and a major in Animal Sciences, then transfer to Auburn University for my DVM license (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine). Determination is key for my field of study. It is full of late nights, hard tests, and meticulous classes. Without determination, there would be no Veterinarians.

Bold Great Books Scholarship
My favorite book would have to be the "Uglies" series. These books go through a four-part series of self beauty and fighting society's standards. Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras. Uglies starts out with the main character, only 16 expressing her excitement of full-body plastic surgery. In this society children are taught from birth to 16 that they are ugly and need plastic surgery to be pretty. They are forced to live in old shelters together, until they are old enough to be "pretty" and move into town. If you decide not to be "pretty" you will remain in ugly town till you die. The main character hears of uglies who run away and have their own village out in the woods, she decides to be one of these runaways. She has self worth and knows that she is pretty without surgery. In the second book, she expresses the need of self beauty and gets more uglies to live with her instead of Pretty town. The third and four book she fights with the mayor of Pretty town to not force people to have plastic surgery and to teach people that they are beautiful in their own skin. I think that body image is something that most young girls struggle with. This resonates with me, because I struggled with self image/beauty for years. Once I learned to love myself for who I am and how I look, I have been more confident than ever. This series sends out a positive message for young girls today. That it is ok to be you. You do not have to fit into the cookie cutter beauty standards of society. Create your own!
