Women in Nursing Scholarship
Becoming a nurse is not just a career goal for me; it is a deeply personal mission shaped by my life experiences and my determination to overcome adversity. Growing up in a small town in Honduras, I battled severe asthma, an illness that often left me gasping for breath. In a place where medical resources were scarce, accessing the care I needed was a constant struggle. My mother’s desperate efforts to get me treatment, despite our limited means, left a lasting impact on me. These experiences fueled my resolve to one day become a nurse who could provide the care that so many in my community lacked.
My determination was further solidified through my encounters with medical brigades, including those from organizations like Doctors Without Borders. As a patient, I was profoundly grateful for the compassionate care I received. These experiences not only alleviated my physical suffering but also inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. I realized that nursing was more than just a profession, it was my way of giving back and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others, especially those who are vulnerable and underserved.
When I immigrated to the United States, I faced a new set of challenges, language barriers, financial difficulties, and the overwhelming responsibility of being the first in my family to attend college. Despite these obstacles, my determination never wavered. I enrolled in the Associate Degree in Nursing program at El Camino College in California, with the goal of becoming a Registered Nurse by June 2026. My journey has required immense perseverance, but every challenge I’ve faced has only strengthened my resolve to fulfill my dream of providing compassionate, life-changing care.
My experiences as a child with asthma, an immigrant, and a CNA have shaped my commitment to helping those who are most in need of care. I am determined to become a nurse who not only provides high-quality care but also advocates for patients who face cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic barriers. My experiences as a patient with Doctors Without Borders have reinforced my passion for serving underserved communities, and I am committed to continuing this work throughout my nursing career.
In the future, I envision myself working in community health, providing culturally sensitive care and addressing health disparities in immigrant and low-income populations. My goal is to lead initiatives that ensure everyone, regardless of their background, has access to the care they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives. This scholarship would help me achieve my dream of becoming a nurse who makes a lasting impact on the lives of others, particularly those who, like me, have faced significant challenges in accessing the healthcare they deserve.
Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students
Nursing is more than a career choice for me; it is a calling rooted in my personal experiences and my unwavering desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Growing up in Honduras, I witnessed firsthand the struggles of my community in accessing quality healthcare. These early experiences left a lasting impression on me and fueled my ambition to become a healthcare provider who can advocate for and support those who are often overlooked.
Currently, I am pursuing an associate degree in nursing at El Camino College in California, with the goal of becoming a Registered Nurse by June 2026. As a first-generation immigrant and the first in my family to attend college, I have faced numerous challenges, including language barriers, financial hardships, and the responsibilities that come with being a trailblazer in my family. Despite these obstacles, I have maintained a strong academic record and a deep commitment to my studies, driven by the belief that my education will enable me to serve others and improve the healthcare system.
My journey to becoming a nurse has not been easy, particularly in terms of financial challenges. As a Certified Nurse Assistant, I currently work with Veterans and the older population, providing essential care and support. While this job has been incredibly fulfilling, it also underscores the financial strain I face as I work to balance my job with my academic responsibilities. My income as a CNA covers basic living expenses, but it is not enough to fully support my education. This scholarship would significantly alleviate my financial burden, allowing me to focus more on my studies and clinical experiences, which are crucial to my development as a future nurse.
My ultimate goal is to become a Registered Nurse who not only provides high-quality care but also advocates for patients who face cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic barriers. I am particularly passionate about working with underserved communities, including immigrant populations, who often struggle to navigate the healthcare system. My work as a CNA has already given me valuable insights into the importance of empathy, patience, and cultural competence in healthcare, and I plan to build on these experiences as I advance in my nursing career.
In the long term, I envision myself leading initiatives that address health disparities and improve access to care for marginalized communities. I am committed to making a meaningful impact in the lives of my patients by not only treating their physical ailments but also understanding and addressing the broader social determinants of their health. This scholarship will help me take the next critical step in my journey to becoming a nurse who can make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

Carlos F. Garcia Muentes Scholarship
As I reflect on my journey as a first-generation immigrant from Honduras, I am reminded of the moments that have shaped my path, fueled my ambitions, and strengthened my resolve to create a better future for myself and my community. My story, like that of many immigrants, is one of perseverance, grit, and an unwavering commitment to turning dreams into reality.
I was born in a small town in Honduras, where opportunities were scarce, and challenges were abundant. From a young age, I faced numerous health complications, with one incident nearly taking my life. My earliest memories involve accompanying my mother to Doctors Without Borders medical brigades, seeking the care that we so desperately needed. These experiences left an indelible mark on me, fostering a deep appreciation for medical professionals who, in my eyes, were nothing short of heroes. It was during these formative years that I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to helping others, just as those doctors had helped me.
When I was just five years old, my mother made the heart-wrenching decision to immigrate to the United States in search of a better life for my sister and me. Left behind in Honduras, I learned to navigate life’s challenges without her, finding solace in my studies and a sense of purpose in my dream of one day reuniting with her. My education became my refuge, and I was determined to excel, not just for myself, but for the family that had sacrificed so much for my future.
At the age of 15, I was finally able to reunite with my mother in the United States. This moment marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life—a chapter filled with hope, but also with new challenges. Overcoming language barriers and adjusting to a new culture, I saw this as my opportunity to pursue higher education and reshape my future. Despite doubts about my English comprehension and the demands of my studies, I persevered. My determination led me to enroll in community college, where I focused on improving my language skills and solidifying my path toward a career in nursing.
As the first in my family to attend college, I carried the weight of our collective hopes and dreams. Our financial situation was precarious, and there were times when my family urged me to abandon my studies to provide for our immediate needs. However, I knew that education was the key to breaking the cycle of hardship, and I refused to give up. Even when faced with homelessness, I continued to pursue my education, working night shifts to support myself while maintaining my academic performance.
Through it all, I remained steadfast in my commitment to helping others. I volunteered at local hospitals, where I had the privilege of assisting healthcare professionals and translating for Spanish-speaking patients. These experiences deepened my understanding of the importance of culturally sensitive care and reinforced my desire to make a meaningful impact in the field of nursing.
In applying for the Carlos F. Garcia Muentes Scholarship, I am seeking the resources to continue my education and to fulfill my lifelong dream of making a difference in the lives of others. I am driven by the same spirit of ambition that Carlos F. Garcia Muentes embodied, and I am committed to honoring his legacy by using my education to build a better future for myself, my family, and my community.
