Growing up in Overtown, Miami, I witnessed the profound impact that limited access to educational and professional resources can have on young people’s futures. My own journey from this underserved community to becoming a student at Howard University has highlighted for me the immense value of support systems and opportunities. If given the opportunity to improve my community, I would focus on creating a comprehensive educational and career development initiative tailored to the needs of underserved youth in Overtown. This initiative would be designed to empower these young individuals, providing them with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities necessary to transform their lives and their community.
Imagine a community center bustling with energy, where students are not only tackling their homework but also engaging in dynamic workshops and mentorship programs. This vision is at the heart of my plan to establish an educational and career development hub in Overtown. The center would offer a range of programs designed to address both academic and professional needs.
At the core of the initiative would be after-school tutoring and enrichment programs. These would provide academic support and foster a love for learning among students. Certified tutors would assist with homework, prepare students for standardized tests, and help them develop strong study habits. Additionally, workshops on subjects like financial literacy, digital skills, and critical thinking would equip students with practical knowledge that extends beyond the classroom.
To complement the educational programs, the center would offer career development resources. Internships and job shadowing opportunities with local businesses and organizations would provide students with hands-on experience and exposure to various career paths. By partnering with companies, we could create a network of mentors who would guide students in their professional aspirations and help them navigate the transition from education to the workforce.
Recognizing the potential for young people to drive change within their community, the initiative would also include entrepreneurship training. Workshops on starting and managing a business would be offered, along with support for budding entrepreneurs to develop their business ideas. Leadership programs would encourage students to take initiative and become active contributors to their community, fostering a sense of agency and empowerment.
Improving access to educational and career development resources is crucial for several reasons. First, it addresses the disparities that exist in underserved communities by providing the support necessary for young people to succeed. By equipping students with the skills and opportunities they need, we can help break the cycle of poverty and create pathways to economic stability and success.
Second, this initiative would promote social equity by ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have access to quality resources and opportunities. It would help level the playing field and allow talented individuals from Overtown to pursue their dreams and make meaningful contributions to society.
Lastly, investing in the future of our youth is an investment in the future of the community. By empowering young people to achieve their potential, we are fostering a new generation of leaders who will drive positive change and contribute to the growth and development of Overtown.
In conclusion, creating an educational and career development center in Overtown is a powerful way to address systemic inequalities and support the next generation. By focusing on academic support, career readiness, and entrepreneurship, this initiative would provide young people with the tools they need to succeed and drive positive change within their community. This effort reflects my commitment to fostering opportunity and empowerment for underserved youth, ensuring that they have the resources to build a brighter future for themselves and their community.
CATALYSTS Scholarship
As a Black woman navigating through academia and the world of journalism, I've always been driven by a desire to use my platform to advocate for social change and address systemic injustices. My recent endeavors in the field of journalism have provided me with a unique opportunity to amplify important social issues and spark meaningful conversations that have the power to drive change.
One of the projects that I'm particularly passionate about is an article I've been working on for Black Enterprise, focusing on the conflicting state and federal marijuana laws. This issue hits close to home for me, as I've witnessed firsthand the disproportionate impact these laws have had on marginalized communities, particularly the Black population.
In the District of Columbia, where marijuana is legal, there exists a glaring disparity: while individuals can legally consume marijuana, those living in federally funded housing are subject to eviction or arrest if found in possession of the substance. This discrepancy highlights the complex and multifaceted nature of the issue, with socio-economic factors and historical injustices deeply intertwined.
Through my research and reporting, I aim to shed light on the injustices perpetuated by these conflicting laws and advocate for meaningful reform. The federally funded housing population in D.C. is predominantly Black, and the enforcement of these laws disproportionately affects communities of color. Moreover, it's crucial to acknowledge the broader implications of the war on drugs, which has led to the overrepresentation of Black individuals in the prison system and perpetuated cycles of poverty and disenfranchisement.
By delving into this topic, I hope to raise awareness about the systemic inequalities embedded within our legal system and prompt discussions around policy reform. It's imperative that we confront these issues head-on and work towards solutions that promote equity and justice for all.
In addition to my work with Black Enterprise, I remain actively engaged in my community, seeking out opportunities to address social issues and drive positive change. Whether it's volunteering at local organizations, participating in advocacy campaigns, or using my voice to amplify marginalized voices, I am committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of others.
Moving forward, I am eager to continue leveraging my skills and platform to advocate for social change and uplift underserved communities. Through my writing, I hope to inspire others to join me in this important work and contribute to building a more just and equitable society for future generations.

As a child growing up in an underserved neighborhood, one of my earliest experiences with adversity revolved around the daily journey home from school. With a mother who battled hydrocephalus, a condition that often left her forgetful and unable to pick me up on time, I found myself walking the mile-long route home alone from a young age. This routine trek, while daunting at first, became a defining aspect of my childhood and laid the groundwork for the resilience and independence that would shape my future.
Navigating the bustling streets of our neighborhood alone was no small feat for a young child, but it taught me invaluable lessons about self-reliance and perseverance. Despite the uncertainty and occasional fear that crept in during those solitary walks, I quickly learned to rely on my own strength and resourcefulness to overcome any obstacles in my path. With each step, I grew more confident in my ability to navigate the world around me and chart my own course forward.
This early experience with adversity not only instilled in me a sense of independence but also taught me the importance of resilience in the face of challenges. As I encountered various obstacles throughout my academic journey, from financial struggles to academic setbacks, I drew upon the lessons learned from those solitary walks home. Instead of allowing adversity to deter me from my goals, I embraced it as an opportunity for growth and transformation.
Overcoming adversity has shaped me into the person I am today, instilling in me a fierce determination to succeed against all odds. It has taught me to approach challenges with resilience, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in my ability to overcome them. While the journey has been fraught with obstacles, each setback has only strengthened my resolve and deepened my commitment to achieving my dreams.
If I were to offer advice to someone facing similar circumstances, I would encourage them to embrace adversity as a catalyst for growth and transformation. Instead of viewing challenges as insurmountable obstacles, see them as opportunities to develop resilience, strength, and character. Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, family, and mentors who can offer guidance and encouragement along the way. Remember that adversity is not a reflection of your worth or potential but rather a stepping stone on the path to success.
In conclusion, my journey from a young child walking home alone to a determined young adult pursuing her dreams has been shaped by adversity at every turn. While the road has been challenging, it has also been incredibly rewarding, teaching me valuable lessons about resilience, independence, and perseverance. As I continue on my educational journey, I am grateful for the strength and resilience that adversity has instilled in me, guiding me towards a future filled with endless possibilities.

Linda Hicks Memorial Scholarship
As a survivor of domestic violence, my journey has been marked by resilience, courage, and a steadfast commitment to creating positive change. While my experiences have been challenging, they have also fueled my passion for advocacy and shaped my determination to use my voice to make a difference.
My personal encounter with domestic violence occurred during high school, a time when I should have been focused on learning and growth. Instead, I found myself ensnared in an abusive relationship that inflicted both physical and emotional harm. The abuse reached a breaking point when an incident occurred within the confines of a school classroom. This traumatic event served as a wake-up call, prompting me to reevaluate my surroundings and prioritize my safety and well-being above all else.
In the aftermath of this incident, I made the courageous decision to transfer schools. However, my decision to leave was not solely motivated by a desire to escape the immediate threat of abuse. Rather, it was driven by a deep-seated conviction that I deserved to attend a school environment where incidents of violence were taken seriously and addressed with the utmost urgency and care. I refused to tolerate an educational institution that would sweep such egregious misconduct under the rug or turn a blind eye to the suffering of its students.
Transitioning to a new school marked the beginning of a journey of healing and self-discovery. It was a period of adjustment and introspection, during which I grappled with the lingering effects of trauma while simultaneously laying the groundwork for my future endeavors. Despite the challenges I faced, I remained steadfast in my pursuit of academic excellence and personal growth.
My decision to pursue a degree in journalism was informed by a desire to use my experiences as a catalyst for change. Journalism, with its power to inform, educate, and advocate, offered me a platform through which I could amplify the voices of survivors, challenge societal norms, and advocate for systemic reform. By leveraging the principles of ethical reporting and investigative journalism, I aimed to shine a spotlight on the often-hidden realities of domestic violence, foster empathy and understanding, and mobilize communities to take action.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I have been actively involved in advocacy work within my community. Through volunteering, organizing, and outreach efforts, I have sought to raise awareness about domestic violence, provide support to survivors, and advocate for policy changes that prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals. My involvement in initiatives such as community education programs, awareness campaigns, and survivor empowerment workshops has further fueled my passion for social justice and inspired me to continue my advocacy efforts.
As I embark on the next chapter of my academic and professional journey, I am committed to using my education, skills, and lived experiences to effect meaningful change. By combining my journalistic endeavors with my dedication to advocacy and activism, I hope to contribute to a future where domestic violence is eradicated, survivors are supported, and every individual can live free from fear and harm.

Juanita Robinson English Book Scholarship
As a proud 1949 graduate of Howard University, Juanita Robinson English's commitment to education and community service resonates deeply with me. Her legacy inspires me to address the social issue of educational equity, particularly concerning the banning of AP African American Studies.
As a resident of Florida, I worry about the education my younger family members are receiving in our school system. The recent banning of AP African American studies by Governor Ron DeSantis and its subsequent adoption by other states deeply concerns me. Education plays a pivotal role in shaping our understanding of the world and fostering empathy and inclusivity. By limiting access to diverse perspectives and histories, these bans perpetuate ignorance and contribute to systemic inequalities.
Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the importance of education in empowering individuals and communities. My own journey as a student has been shaped by my passion for learning about different cultures, histories, and social issues. As a journalism major and international affairs minor at Howard University, I have had the opportunity to explore these topics in depth and develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of our world.
Through my career, I dream of addressing the issue of educational equity and access by advocating for inclusive curricula and promoting diversity in education. I believe that every student deserves the opportunity to learn about their own history and heritage, as well as the histories and experiences of others. By challenging discriminatory policies and amplifying underrepresented voices, I hope to create a more inclusive and equitable educational system for future generations.
As a journalist, I see myself using my platform to raise awareness about the importance of diversity in education and to hold policymakers and educational institutions accountable for their decisions. I plan to use storytelling as a tool for social change, shedding light on the impact of these bans on students and communities across the country. Additionally, I aim to collaborate with educators, activists, and community organizations to develop alternative educational resources and programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in schools.
Overall, my goal is to work towards creating a future where every student has access to a quality education that reflects the rich diversity of our society. In honoring the memory of Juanita Robinson English and her dedication to education and community service, I am inspired to continue her legacy by advocating for educational equity and social justice through my future career in journalism and beyond. By addressing the social issue of educational equity head-on, I aspire to create a more inclusive and equitable society where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

Raised in the underserved community of Overtown in Miami, my path to education and career aspirations has been shaped by her unwavering support and the indomitable spirit she embodies.

My endeavors are rooted in a fervent desire to amplify marginalized voices, bring attention to social issues, and foster understanding. Through my platform, "Herstory In Making," I strive to create a space for dialogue on topics ranging from beauty standards to systemic injustices. My goal is to inspire empathy and provoke thoughtful conversations that lead to positive change.

From my early years in the underserved community of Overtown in Miami, I learned the importance of resilience and self-determination. These formative experiences, coupled with my mother's unwavering strength in the face of adversity, laid the foundation for my commitment to uplifting others. I recognized the transformative power of encouragement and support, motivating me to become an advocate for those facing challenges.
Running track for eight years, including my time with Howard University's Lady Bison team, equipped me with discipline and determination. The lessons learned on the track extended beyond athletics, influencing my approach to life. I realized the significance of teamwork, perseverance, and the collective pursuit of excellence. This understanding became a cornerstone in my commitment to helping others reach their full potential.
Creating "Herstory In Making," my platform addressing various social issues, was a pivotal step in aligning my skills with my passion for advocacy. Covering topics from selfie dysmorphia to police brutality, the platform serves as a space for dialogue and empowerment. Through storytelling, I strive to provide a voice to the voiceless and foster understanding among diverse communities. It is a manifestation of my belief that everyone's story deserves to be heard and valued.
Tech-savvy and socially conscious, my collaboration with Campus Commandos in content creation for brands like RateMyProfessors and Conair is another dimension of my commitment to helping others. Spearheading social media initiatives, I leverage my skills to bring awareness to brands that align with social responsibility. This intersection of technology and advocacy allows me to contribute to causes that resonate with my values.
Studying abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico, and Accra, Ghana, provided me with a global perspective. These experiences expanded my cultural competence and deepened my understanding of the interconnectedness of humanity. It fueled my determination to break down barriers and help individuals across diverse backgrounds achieve their best selves.

McClendon Leadership Award
From the bustling streets of Oaxaca, Mexico to the vibrant neighborhoods of Accra, Ghana, my journey across different continents has sculpted my understanding of leadership. As Lamaria Washington, a junior majoring in journalism with a minor in international affairs at Howard University, I've learned that true leadership isn’t just about holding a title; it's about leveraging personal experiences to influence, inspire, and make a tangible impact on both local and global communities.
When I think of leadership, I remember the children I met during my study abroad in Oaxaca. I recall how our conversations, despite our distinct backgrounds, were reflections of shared aspirations. Leadership, in that context, meant serving as an ambassador of my culture while simultaneously immersing myself in theirs, forging connections that transcended geographical and cultural boundaries. It was about listening more than speaking, understanding more than instructing. My time in Ghana furthered this understanding as I collaborated with local activists and journalists, observing how grassroots leadership can bring about community transformations. Such international experiences highlighted that leadership is also about adaptability, understanding, and the capacity to bridge diverse worlds through shared human experiences.
Back on Howard's campus, my role in the track team was yet another dimension of leadership. Being an athlete is not just about individual prowess but more about teamwork, resilience, and motivation. Leading in this context was different; it meant setting an example through perseverance, fostering team spirit, and pushing both myself and my teammates to transcend our limits. On the track, leadership translated to moments of motivating a teammate after a tough loss, or strategizing collectively for an upcoming competition. It was about realizing that while races are run individually, victories are celebrated collectively. These experiences taught me that leadership is as much about self-improvement as it is about uplifting those around you.
Furthermore, being a first-generation college student and an African-American woman has provided me with unique insights into leadership. In spaces where representation is sparse, merely occupying those spaces and voicing my perspectives becomes an act of leadership. It's about challenging norms, breaking barriers, and ensuring that the next generation has more footsteps to follow. My passion for journalism and international affairs is deeply tied to this sense of responsibility – to amplify the stories of the unheard, to advocate for the marginalized, and to bring to light issues that often remain in the shadows.
But why is leadership crucial? Because it's the driving force behind change. Every major shift in society, be it the civil rights movement or the global push for sustainable living, has been led by individuals who stepped up, took charge, and envisioned a better future. Leadership is the torch that lights up pathways in the dense forest of challenges that our global society faces. Especially in today's interconnected world, where actions in one part of the globe can influence outcomes thousands of miles away, leadership requires a holistic, globally-informed perspective. It's about understanding the intricate web of our global community and striving for solutions that benefit not just a select few, but humanity at large.
In conclusion, my varied experiences, from studying abroad to representing my university in track and field, have shaped my unique leadership philosophy. It's a blend of global awareness, local action, resilience, and, above all, a commitment to inclusivity. In a world that's rapidly evolving, leadership is the anchor that can guide us to shores of positive, lasting change. Whether it's on the tracks of Howard or the streets of Accra, leadership, to me, is about leaving footprints that guide, inspire, and pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.

Henry Bynum, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
WinnerAdversity is not just an encounter; it's an instructor. My life, as I've come to know it, is a tapestry woven with challenges, resilience, and an unyielding spirit of perseverance. I am Lamaria Washington, a first-generation college student at Howard University, and this is my journey of overcoming adversity and my aspirations for the future.
Growing up, I was surrounded by stories of grit. My mother, born with hydrocephalus, has battled the side effects of her condition her entire life. Every day, she defied her physical limitations, determined to provide for her family, even when my father was absent. Her strength became my guiding beacon, teaching me the importance of determination and resilience. I realized early on that life wouldn't hand me opportunities; I'd have to forge them.
When the time came for college applications, I was on my own. My mother, with her health issues, couldn't assist in the paperwork or the process. The hurdles felt insurmountable at times - from understanding the intricate world of FAFSA to navigating college application prerequisites. But with every challenge I faced, I remembered my mother's determination, and it fueled my own.
The path to Howard University was paved with trials, but my arrival marked the beginning of another journey: self-discovery. I pursued journalism, a field that resonated with my love for stories and advocacy. But with my passion also came the weight of Imposter Syndrome. At a prestigious institution like Howard, surrounded by immensely talented peers, doubts crept in. Was I good enough? Did I truly belong? But I remembered my mother's lessons and my past challenges, recognizing that self-doubt was just another adversity to overcome.
It was this resilient spirit that drove me to not just excel academically but to venture beyond borders. I studied abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico, and Accra, Ghana, experiences that taught me about global narratives and the power of cross-cultural storytelling. In Ghana, I confronted another challenge: losing my athletic scholarship because I chose enrichment over athletics. But the lessons and experiences I gained abroad outweighed that loss, teaching me about sacrifice and long-term vision.
Looking forward, I am driven by a single goal: to give back to my community that shaped my identity and resilience. I've witnessed firsthand the disparities that exist in our society, from healthcare to education. My experiences, both good and bad, have given me a unique lens, one that I aim to use to highlight the stories of my community.
With my journalism background, I plan to create platforms that amplify marginalized voices. The Black community, rich in history and culture, has tales that need to be shared, struggles that must be highlighted, and successes that should be celebrated. I envision community programs that foster education, advocacy, and empowerment.
Moreover, health and wellness are paramount. Inspired by my mother's journey, I aspire to launch initiatives that focus on community health, both physical and mental. By partnering with local institutions and healthcare providers, I wish to create awareness campaigns, free health check-up camps, and counseling sessions, ensuring that no individual feels alone in their journey.
In essence, my life has been a series of challenges, each one molding me, refining me. But adversity is not my story's climax; it's the prologue. The chapters ahead are dedicated to my community, to uplift, empower, and inspire. I've been shaped by trials, but more importantly, by the hope of a brighter, inclusive, and compassionate future. My past fuels my present, and my present is dedicated to shaping a better future.
Ruebenna Greenfield Flack Scholarship
I am Lamaria Washington, a tenacious journalism major with a minor in international affairs at Howard University. Born and raised in a vibrant community, I have always been surrounded by diverse narratives, each of which has fueled my passion for storytelling, advocacy, and global understanding.
Being a first-generation college student, I've faced the challenges of navigating the academic world largely on my own, but this journey has only fortified my determination. Every hurdle faced was a lesson, every setback an opportunity for growth. These experiences have instilled in me a strong belief in the transformative power of education and the stories we share.
My academic pursuits have taken me across borders. From Oaxaca, Mexico, where I worked with physically disabled children, learning resilience and the universality of human spirit, to Accra, Ghana, where I dove into educational initiatives and connected with students of diverse backgrounds, every experience has broadened my horizon. It was in these moments, away from home, that I realized the power of cross-cultural storytelling in bridging divides and fostering understanding.
While immersing myself in my coursework at the University of Ghana, I also sought out opportunities to contribute to the local community. I was fortunate enough to volunteer at the University of Legon basic school, working with third-grade children. Despite the unfamiliar environment and the initial language barrier, I was able to connect with the children, assisting their teachers in grading papers and even spearheading a few extracurricular activities.
My ambitions in journalism are not limited to reporting events. Through my platform "HerStoryInMaking", I've delved into issues that are often sidelined. From discussing police brutality to highlighting the overlooked health implications of beauty treatments in the Black community, I seek to shine a light on the unspoken and the overlooked.
As I look forward to my career, I envision myself at the forefront of investigative journalism, uncovering stories that matter and advocating for those who don't have a voice. More than reporting, I aim to influence policy, create spaces for dialogue, and usher in tangible change.
In a world brimming with information, I believe the stories we choose to tell and the narratives we choose to uplift can shape perceptions, break down barriers, and inspire action. Through my work, I aspire to not just inform but to drive change, ensuring that the stories of the marginalized are heard, understood, and acted upon. With a pen as my tool and truth as my guide, I am poised to make a positive and lasting impact in the world of journalism and beyond.
Mohamed Magdi Taha Memorial Scholarship
Mohamed Magdi Taha's indomitable spirit and steadfast commitment to justice and community have left an indelible mark on many, including myself. His ability to discern the profound power of small gestures, paired with his relentless pursuit of larger systemic change, remains a beacon for all those seeking to create a meaningful impact in their communities.
My journey as an 'up-stander' has been shaped by an innate sense of justice, much like Taha’s, and a relentless drive to spotlight and address the disparities and systemic challenges faced by marginalized groups. At Howard University, the historical backdrop of activism and advocacy provided the perfect crucible for my ideals to be honed. My major in journalism became more than just an academic pursuit—it transformed into a tool for change, a medium through which I could amplify suppressed voices, challenge established narratives, and advocate for equity.
In my written pieces, I have consistently strived to go beyond surface-level reportage, delving deep into the underlying systemic issues, historical contexts, and the broader societal implications. For instance, while the mainstream narrative often generalizes the Black community’s experiences, I've made it my mission to underscore the rich tapestry of individual stories, aspirations, and challenges that exist within it. Every story is a testament to resilience, dreams, or a clarion call for change.
Beyond the written word, my commitment to being an 'up-stander' has been manifested in tangible actions. In Accra, Ghana, my volunteering wasn’t merely an act of service; it was an educational experience. The time I spent mentoring students was reciprocated with lessons in cultural exchange, resilience, and the universal nature of human dreams and aspirations.
However, advocacy isn’t a solitary endeavor. It's a collective, continuous process of learning and growing. I've attended countless seminars, panel discussions, and workshops, absorbing diverse perspectives, and refining my understanding of the multifaceted issues we face today. This continuous learning equips me with the knowledge and context to make my advocacy efforts more potent and grounded.
Looking towards the future, the digital realm beckons with promise. The democratization of information and storytelling through platforms like podcasts, blogs, and social media provides a potent avenue for community-building. I envision a digital platform—a nexus for voices from all walks of life, a sanctuary where stories are shared, resources are pooled, and collective action is catalyzed. This won't just be a passive repository of narratives but an active hub for mentorships, collaborations, and community-driven initiatives.
In an era where polarization seems to be the norm, the need for bridges—of understanding, collaboration, and mutual respect—becomes paramount. Inspired by the likes of Mohamed Magdi Taha and armed with the skills I've cultivated, my vision is to craft these bridges, weaving a tapestry of unified communities, bound not by geography, but by shared dreams, aspirations, and a relentless pursuit of justice and equity.
Social Change Fund United Scholarship
In my utopian vision for optimal mental health in the Black community, there exists a profound understanding and acknowledgment of the unique mental health challenges this community faces, many of which are rooted in generations of systemic inequality, discrimination, and racial trauma. Access to mental health services is not just readily available, but these services are also culturally sensitive, affordable, and stigma-free. Mental health is valued and prioritized in the same way physical health is, promoting a comprehensive and holistic approach to wellbeing.
In this vision, mental health education begins early and is woven seamlessly into our school systems, community programs, and even religious institutions. This education is robust, ensuring that every individual understands what mental health is, how to recognize signs of mental health issues in themselves and others, and how to seek help. Crucially, this education also dispels myths and stereotypes about mental illness, chipping away at the stigma that prevents many from seeking help.
Mental health care professionals in this utopia are as diverse as the population they serve. This diversity extends beyond race and includes professionals who understand the socio-economic, cultural, and historical experiences of the Black community. They are equipped with the necessary training and resources to provide effective, empathetic, and individualized care.
Advocacy plays a pivotal role in this vision. Advocates work tirelessly to influence policies that increase funding for mental health services in Black communities, remove barriers to accessing these services, and promote mental health education. These advocates also strive to integrate mental health care into other community support services, ensuring a holistic approach to community wellbeing.
Achieving this utopia is more than just an exercise in improving mental health outcomes; it's a fundamental aspect of achieving social justice. Mental health issues don't exist in a vacuum - they're deeply intertwined with other social issues like poverty, education, employment, and housing, which are all areas where racial disparities persist. Addressing mental health in the Black community, therefore, means addressing these systemic inequalities.
For instance, advocating for more funding for mental health services in predominantly Black communities can lead to more resources for these communities in general, such as improved school funding or better housing. By prioritizing mental health, we're also advocating for a more equitable distribution of resources.
Furthermore, improving mental health outcomes can also have a profound impact on other areas of life. Better mental health can lead to improved academic performance, higher employment rates, and even reduced rates of incarceration, all of which contribute to a more equitable and just society.
In conclusion, my utopian vision for optimal mental health in the Black community is one where mental health care is accessible, affordable, culturally sensitive, and stigma-free. It's a society where mental health is seen as a critical component of overall wellbeing and is deeply intertwined with the pursuit of social justice. Achieving this vision will require concerted effort from all sectors of society - from policymakers and mental health professionals to educators and advocates. It's a formidable challenge, but one that we must rise to meet in our quest for a more equitable and just society.
Barbara J. DeVaney Memorial Scholarship Fund
Hello! I am Lamaria Washington, a Journalism major and International Affairs minor at Howard University, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. As a student, athlete, community advocate, and first-generation college student, the complexities of my identity offer a richer understanding of who I am.
My academic journey has not been easy, primarily due to the financial strain associated with higher education. I come from a single-parent household in Miami, Florida. My mother, a warrior in her own right, suffers from hydrocephalus and has been on government assistance her entire life. As a result, funding my education has always been a challenge.
However, I've not let this deter me. I've persistently sought opportunities to bolster my academic and career prospects. I've embarked on transformative study abroad experiences in Oaxaca, Mexico, and Accra, Ghana. In these places, I immersed myself in the culture, history, and community, volunteering at a children's rehabilitation institute in Oaxaca and a basic school in Accra. These experiences have not only widened my perspective but also instilled a deep-seated commitment to service, particularly towards marginalized communities.
As an athlete, I am a 4-time MEAC conference champion in track and field. Sports have been a significant part of my life, teaching me discipline, resilience, and the importance of balance. However, my commitment to global engagement meant a hard decision: I gave up my athletic scholarship to study in Ghana. The loss of the scholarship increased my financial burden, but the invaluable experience gained was worth the sacrifice.
An essential facet of my identity and commitment to advocacy is 'HerStoryinMaking,' a platform I founded to share stories and perspectives often overlooked in mainstream media. As a female, African-American journalist, I've recognized that certain narratives, particularly those relating to underrepresented or marginalized communities, are often left out of the broader conversation.
'HerStoryinMaking' aims to fill this gap. It serves as a platform for dialogue, understanding, and advocacy. Through vlogging and blogging, I delve into a range of issues, from discussing the impacts of phone addiction to addressing systemic problems like police brutality.
If granted this scholarship, the immediate relief it would bring to my financial situation cannot be overstated. It would allow me to focus more on my academic endeavors and less on financial constraints, enhancing my overall university experience.
Moreover, this scholarship would fuel my journalistic aspirations. With a passion for storytelling and a keen interest in advocating for social justice, I aspire to spotlight narratives that often go unnoticed. The scholarship would enable me to delve deeper into this field, potentially covering fieldwork expenses, attending workshops or seminars, and gaining valuable experiences that would refine my journalistic skills. A part of the funds would be invested into 'HerStoryinMaking.' These funds would enhance the platform's reach and impact, allowing for more comprehensive research, expanding its scope, and potentially collaborating with other young writers and activists.
On a broader scale, the scholarship would empower me to contribute more significantly to my local and global community. The additional financial flexibility would allow me to take on more volunteer opportunities and continue the work I started during my study abroad experiences.
In conclusion, this scholarship would not only ease my path through university but also set the stage for my future as a journalist and advocate. It would give me the freedom to dream bigger, work harder, and delve deeper into the causes I am passionate about. It would be a catalyst, accelerating my journey towards creating a better life for myself, making a positive impact on my community, and contributing to a more inclusive and equitable world.
Lauren Czebatul Scholarship
Volunteering, especially during my study abroad experiences in Oaxaca, Mexico, and Accra, Ghana, has significantly reshaped my perspective and reinforced my commitment to service. In Oaxaca, I volunteered at the Children's Rehabilitation Institute Teleton, working with physically disabled children. In Accra, I spent time at the University of Legon Basic School, assisting in teaching third graders.
In Oaxaca, I witnessed the strength and resilience of children dealing with physical disabilities. The joy and determination they exhibited despite their circumstances deeply moved me, instilling a renewed sense of appreciation for the human spirit and resilience. It heightened my awareness of the disparities in healthcare and education, fueling my desire to advocate for equity and accessibility.
In Ghana, assisting teachers and engaging with students at the University Basic School provided a profound insight into the educational challenges faced by communities in developing countries. The experience highlighted the importance of quality education in transforming lives and communities, reinforcing my belief in education as a tool for social change.
These experiences have collectively enriched my perspective, fostering a deeper understanding of global issues and the impact of community-based solutions. They have strengthened my commitment to service and solidified my belief in the transformative power of collective effort and empathy.
As for the necessity of this scholarship, I am a first-generation college student, born and raised by a single mother with health complications. She has been government-assisted her whole life and has limited means to support my higher education financially. While I have worked diligently to secure academic and athletic scholarships, the cost of education, coupled with other expenses such as books and living expenses, still presents a significant burden.
As previously mentioned, I made the decision to study abroad in Accra, Ghana. It was a significant choice, driven by my passion for global perspectives, my desire to engage with diverse cultures, and my commitment to service. However, this decision came with a significant consequence: I had to give up my athletic scholarship.
As a track and field athlete, I was the recipient of an athletic scholarship that greatly eased my financial burden. However, choosing to study abroad meant I would be absent from the team for an extended period, making me ineligible to retain the scholarship. This was a challenging decision, weighing my commitment to my team and my financial need against the enriching opportunity to study in Ghana.
Losing the athletic scholarship put a considerable strain on my finances. It necessitated taking on part-time jobs and seeking additional scholarships to fund my education. The financial stress was palpable, but I remained steadfast, buoyed by the knowledge that the experience in Ghana was a worthwhile investment in my personal growth and future career.
This scholarship would significantly alleviate these financial pressures, allowing me to focus more fully on my academic and personal growth. It would provide me the opportunity to take advantage of additional learning experiences such as internships and further study abroad programs, without the constant worry of financial constraints.
Ultimately, this scholarship is more than financial assistance; it's an enabler, empowering me to fully realize my potential and further contribute to my community and beyond.

Growing up with a single mother in Miami, Florida, has profoundly shaped who I am today. My mother, despite having her struggles with hydrocephalus and living on government assistance, has been a symbol of resilience, strength, and unwavering love that has inspired me in every facet of my life.
Raised in a household with limited resources, I was introduced early to the realities of life and the challenges that come with it. However, my mother, with her tenacity and optimism, turned these hardships into lessons of strength, perseverance, and hope. She instilled in me the values of hard work, education, and the belief that no obstacle is insurmountable.
Without a doubt, the financial difficulties were tangible. There were moments of struggle and uncertainty. Yet, my mother always ensured that we had what we needed. This experience taught me the value of resourcefulness and the power of determination. It also instilled in me a strong sense of social responsibility and a drive to give back to my community, fueling my advocacy work today.
Growing up without a father was also a challenge. The absence of that paternal figure sometimes felt like a void. However, it also allowed me to appreciate the strength and capacity of my mother even more. She filled both roles, teaching me life skills, offering comfort, and encouraging me to chase my dreams.
Seeing my mother's determination to provide for us, despite her health issues and other obstacles, has imbued me with a resilient spirit. Her experiences have given me a unique perspective on life and a profound empathy for those dealing with adversity.
The lessons I learned from my mother have carried me through my academic journey, too. As a first-generation college student at Howard University, navigating higher education without a family blueprint was daunting. However, the resilience, perseverance, and tenacity my mother instilled in me fueled my ambition and carried me through.
My mother's influence has shaped my academic and career paths, inspiring me to major in Journalism and minor in International Affairs. I aspire to use these platforms to tell the stories of those often unheard, mirroring my mother's perseverance in the face of adversity.
In conclusion, growing up with a single mother has undoubtedly shaped me into the person I am today - resilient, determined, and compassionate. I carry the lessons I've learned from her as a badge of honor, and they continue to guide me on my journey.

WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
My greatest achievement to date has been receiving the Benjamin Gilman international scholarship during my freshman year of college. This scholarship gave me the opportunity to study abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico. After that wonderful experience, I decided to study abroad again this summer in Accra, Ghana. As a first-generation college student from a low-income family, these experiences were life-changing for me. They allowed me to immerse myself in different cultures, make connections with people from around the world, and expand my horizons in ways I could have never imagined before. Through these experiences, I gained a deeper appreciation for the value of international travel and its potential to bridge gaps between different communities and perspectives.
Studying abroad not only taught me about the world but also revealed a lot about myself. I discovered that I am incredibly adaptable and resourceful. Being in unfamiliar environments and navigating through different languages and customs pushed me out of my comfort zone, but I learned to embrace change and uncertainty with an open mind. I also found that I have a passion for storytelling and sharing diverse narratives. Through my website, HerstoryinMaking, I was able to express my thoughts on important issues such as police brutality and phone addiction, and this platform allowed me to connect with people who share similar concerns and interests.
Looking ahead, I hope to continue my journey of exploration and storytelling. I want to further pursue my passion for journalism and international affairs. I dream of becoming a foreign correspondent, reporting on global events and human-interest stories from different corners of the world. I believe that my experiences as a first-generation college student from a low-income background, coupled with my exposure to various cultures through my travels, will give me a unique perspective and understanding when reporting on international matters. I also aim to expand HerstoryinMaking and create a thriving platform that amplifies the voices of marginalized communities, brings attention to critical issues, and fosters meaningful conversations that promote positive change in society.
Ultimately, I aspire to be a catalyst for change, using my storytelling skills and experiences to bring about greater understanding, empathy, and unity in a world that is often divided by boundaries and biases. I want to be an advocate for the power of education and the transformative potential of international experiences for individuals like me, who once felt disconnected from their home state but have now found their place in the global community.
