Derrick Richardson Law Student Scholarship
I believe that my background in journalism helped me increase my storytelling skills and verbal communication skills. To be a successful journalist you have to be able to communicate clearly and effectively and convince your audience on why they should continue listening to you. After years of anchoring on Hampton University’s student run news show whov I know how to speak and carry myself in a way that influences others to listen to what I have to say, which can be an essential tool I can utilize as a lawyer. Also my experience with growing up in Lagos, Nigeria and doing community service work in third world countries has helped me see all of the hardships that low-income and impoverished communities go through. These experiences have fueled my desire to want to help people of color who cannot afford quality legal representation. I believe that as African Americans, the system was not designed to benefit us. Even as a law student who will be the first in my family to graduate, I see how other students who come from a long line of lawyers have access to opportunities that I do not have access to. I would like to graduate law school and pave the way for other young first generation black law students. The legal system disproportionately affects black people, which is why I believe that more black people need to go to law school. I believe that me, a black queer woman, will be able to better empathize with my black clients who are dealing with legal issues, and I want to be able to be the type of attorney that my clients believe they can confide in.
