Margot Bogner Memorial Scholarship
As a member of Gamma Phi Beta, I feel as if I can relate to Mrs. Bogner greatly. The things that I have read and heard about her are truly life-changing, and I strive to do the same. Some of my hobbies include listening to music (Elton John is my absolute favorite), reading, playing tennis, and calling my mom when I am away at college. I enjoy making people laugh and also just helping people in general. I am majoring in Family and Consumer Science Education, and with that path ahead of me I intend on going out of my way to make an impact on people's lives. It is something that I have always dreamed of doing because I have had so many teachers who have touched my life in that same way. I want to work at a Title 1 school, which is a school that has very high poverty rates, and I want to do this because I want to help the students. They have very rough home lives, and I want to be the one that they can go to if they need to chill out or if they need help with anything. I want to be the teacher that they remember in the future and appreciate.
With being a member of Gamma Phi, we have a philanthropy which is Girls on the Run. I find this philanthropy to be very touching because we are able to be very hands-on and involved with the girls. We get to empower young women through this and it is so rewarding. To me, raising the confidence of girls in their adolescent ages is absolutely crucial and I love that we get to do it with our philanthropy.
I am big on volunteer work and it is something I will do throughout my life. Being an education major provides many opportunities for this. I mostly like working with children. It is just something that I am very passionate about. I have worked with troubled kids and it is life-changing. I am a people person and I thrive when I work and help others, so this type of volunteering is right up my alley. When I was in high school I also started a "closet" in our school where students could bring in old clothes that they don't need anymore and they would donate them to the closet. It was available to all students, but it was aimed at students in more unfortunate situations.
When I heard about Mrs. Bogner, I was at chapter. Her husband came in and explained everything and I just can't get his words out of my mind. It was eye-opening for me and I want to be more like our Gamma Phi Alumni. There are wise words from Billy Joel that remind me of Mrs. Bogner and they are, "Only the good die young!"
