I decided to work in the field of social work because I have always wanted to help those in need. I am currently attending the college of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. I am a sophomore in college, with a standing of a junior. I am minoring in psychology and I am a manager with the women’s hockey team here at CSS. I am drawn to social work because I want to help others and make a positive impact in their communities. It’s a field that allows you to make a difference in people’s lives and addresses social issues. I want to make a positive impact and I can do that through social work. I have had friends that have had social workers and they always tell me about the huge impact they made in their lives, and I want to be that person who can change someones life forever. I also like that it’s a very broad career. I am passionate about working with children and families, so I will lean more towards that part of the field. But I am also interested in working in a healthcare setting and with social work I can do both. If working with families gets to hard I can switch to working in a healthcare setting. The beauty of social work is that it allows you to choose a path that aligns with your interests and values. Social workers also help to support and empower vulnerable populations, advocate for social justice, and provide resources and assistance to those in need. I want to be that person that does what I had stated above. Another factor that I want to do social work is for the rewarding feeling that I just helped someone else out and putting a smile on someone’s face. Sacrifices are a common part of pursuing personal and educational goals. Some sacrifices I have made are dedicating extra time to studying, giving up certain social activities, and even financial sacrifices to invest in my education. I make sure that I prioritize my time and energy. I also work part-time to help pay for my school, which at some times can be tough. I also try to remind myself that balancing what I have given up now is for the later success that I am working towards the future. It’s not easy, but it’s the commitment that helps me reach those milestones. During these times I just try to keep being positive and keep pushing forward and knowing that my hard work will pay off in the long run.
