Hello! My name is Katherine Wanamaker and I am pursuing a degree in general business with a major in marketing after I transfer. I am currently attending Macomb Community College, with plans to transfer to Oakland University in fall of 2023. From there, I plan to obtain my masters, and maybe even a doctorate, if funds allow. Working and school keep me busy, but in my free time I enjoy a variety of hobbies such as musical theater, jewelry, and all other types of art. When I graduate, I hope to start my marketing career, hopefully in the area of advertising or media management. Best wishes!

I am currently in my third year at Macomb Community College, and I am enrolled in the General Business program. I have hopes to be able to finish all of my remaining credits by summer of 2023 and then transfer to Oakland University. My short term goals for the next few semesters are to maintain a high degree of organization, and to improve my GPA by .2 before I have to transfer. Given that I am also going to be on campus for the first time as well, I would also like to participate in some student organizations if time allows. After my transfer, my long term educational goals are to maintain at least a 3.5 GPA, make connections that will assist me in my career, and obtain my Masters of Marketing. In regards to my career, I am interested in the area of marketing and advertising management, although I am not yet sure which niche I am going to go into yet.
I am lucky to have had a variety of accomplishments throughout both my academic career and professional life. To begin with, I am fortunate to have been on the Dean’s List at Macomb for two out of three of the semesters that I have attended. Previously, I have been a member of three chapters of the National Honor Society through Dakota High School, including the main NHS, as well as Art and German. Through these experiences, I was able frequently serve my community through various volunteer work, and gain valuable leadership skills through my treasurer position in the NAHS. In addition to this, I have also held leadership positions in the Gender Sexuality Alliance and on two of my softball teams.
I will make a positive impact on the world through my leadership by creating a cooperative environment for my employees, and by working to uphold fair standards for conduct in our workplace. First, the environment in which one works is perhaps the most important factor in performance. In order to perform well, employees must be able to work well with their coworkers, and thrive in the climate of the business. Going further, to do both of these things it is necessary to have a culture of acceptance and accountability, so that they feel their concerns are being addressed, and that they are appreciated for the work that they do. Building this culture starts with management, and I will make a positive impact by ensuring that all my employees are satisfied in their position. Additionally, there is an extensive set of rules to determine what types of conduct in the workplace are moral and ethical. Upholding these rules is essential in the modern workplace in order to to obtain the cooperative culture mentioned above. It is the job of leadership to enforce these rules, which therefore makes a positive impact on the lives of all involved.
Finally, I am passionate about leadership because I enjoy supporting others, collaborating to reach solutions, and building relationships with others. I realized that I had an aptitude for leadership later in my academic career. Previously, I did not consider myself a leader because even though I was good at providing direction and resolutions, I was not as outspoken as most people would imagine a leader to be. Eventually, though, I realized that the purpose of a leader is not to capture attention, but to give guidance to their peers in a way that builds camaraderie, and use this to motivate the team toward their goal. Given this, I am passionate about leadership because of the opportunities for connection it offers.
