Bio

Hello! My name is Karissa Smith and others would describe me as studious, outgoing, adventurous, and determined. My career goal in life is either to go into Pediatric Psychiatry or become a Medical Attorney to help or defend those in need. When I am not studying, working, or playing softball for my collegiate team, San Jose City College, I love to snowboard, surf, paint, or simply spend time with the people closest to me. Throughout playing travel softball, I have seen many new places and have gotten to experience many different cultures while on the road. Since I have gotten exposed to more of the world at a younger age, I feel that I can pull ideas or practices from various places to put together a more rounded opinion or decision. During this portion of my life, I did not travel alone, but rather with my closest family and friends to help make the journey more impactful. Travel is often described as a journey of self-discovery, and this is because it exposes individuals to a multitude of new experiences, challenges, and perspectives that can profoundly shape their personal growth. One way in which travel fosters personal development is by pushing individuals out of their comfort zones. Visiting unfamiliar places, navigating foreign languages, and immersing oneself in different cultural practices can be both exhilarating and intimidating. However, it is precisely these challenges that force individuals to adapt, problem-solve, and develop resilience. Overcoming obstacles while traveling instills confidence and self-reliance, qualities that are invaluable in all aspects of life. Moreover, exposure to diverse cultures and ways of life encourages introspection and self-reflection. When confronted with contrasting beliefs, values, and social norms, travelers are prompted to reassess their own perspectives and biases. This process of introspection can lead to profound insights and personal growth as individuals gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world. Travel also promotes empathy and cross-cultural understanding. Interacting with people from different backgrounds fosters empathy by allowing individuals to see the world through others' eyes. Building connections with people from diverse cultures cultivates appreciation for the richness of human diversity and challenges stereotypes and prejudices. Furthermore, travel provides opportunities for individuals to cultivate important life skills such as adaptability, communication, and problem-solving. Whether navigating unfamiliar transportation systems, negotiating language barriers, or finding accommodation in remote locations, travelers must rely on their resourcefulness and ingenuity to overcome challenges. In essence, travel is a transformative experience because it offers a unique combination of adventure, exploration, and personal reflection. By exposing individuals to new cultures, perspectives, and environments, travel broadens horizons, deepens self-awareness, and fosters personal growth in ways that few other experiences can.

Softball has been more than just a game to me; it has been a transformative journey that has shaped my character and fueled my passion for helping others. Through countless hours of practice and competition, I have honed not only my physical skills but also my mental fortitude and leadership abilities. On the field, I have learned the importance of teamwork, communication, and perseverance. As a shortstop, I am not only responsible for helping guide the infield but also for leading and motivating my team. This role has taught me to communicate effectively, to remain calm under pressure, and to support my teammates through both victories and setbacks. I am also a team captain for my collegiate team at San Jose City College and this role has allowed me even more to lead my teammates by my voice and by example. Off the field, I have dedicated myself to continuous improvement, constantly seeking feedback and striving to learn from both successes and failures. Beyond the technical aspects of the game, softball has instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and compassion for others. As I witnessed the struggles and triumphs of my teammates, I became acutely aware of the impact that encouragement and support can have on an individual's performance and well-being. Whether it was offering words of encouragement after a strikeout or celebrating a teammate's success, I discovered the profound satisfaction that comes from helping others reach their full potential. Outside of softball, I have sought out opportunities to further develop my skills and contribute to the success of those around me. As a volunteer coach for a youth softball team, I have had the privilege of sharing my knowledge and experience with young athletes, helping them develop not only their athletic abilities but also their confidence and resilience. In my academic pursuits, I have sought out leadership roles and collaborative projects that have allowed me to leverage my skills to support and empower my peers. Looking ahead, I am committed to continuing my journey of personal and professional growth, using my skills and experiences to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Whether it is through coaching, mentoring, or advocacy, I am driven by a deep-seated desire to help individuals overcome obstacles, realize their potential, and thrive. Softball may have been the catalyst for my journey, but it is my passion for helping others that drives me to be my best and to inspire others to do the same.

I've always been deeply committed to making a meaningful impact on people's lives. My journey into the healthcare/medicine field stems from a genuine desire to contribute to the well-being of others and to play a role in preserving their lives and happiness. From a young age, I've been drawn to the idea of using my skills and knowledge to make a positive difference in the world, and pursuing a career in healthcare allows me to do just that. As I've explored various areas within the healthcare field, I've found myself particularly drawn to pediatric oncology. This specialization resonates with me on a personal level because it addresses a critical need in our healthcare system. Pediatric oncology often faces challenges such as limited funding and a shortage of healthcare professionals, yet it serves one of the most vulnerable populations—children battling cancer. My decision to pursue pediatric oncology is driven by a strong sense of compassion and empathy for these young patients and their families. I believe that every child deserves the chance to live a happy and healthy life, and I'm committed to doing everything in my power to make that a reality for those facing the challenges of cancer. In my future career, I envision myself providing comprehensive care and support to pediatric oncology patients, from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. I want to be a source of strength and comfort for these children and their families during one of the most difficult times in their lives. By offering compassionate care, advocating for their needs, and conducting research to advance treatment options, I hope to make a lasting impact on the lives of pediatric oncology patients and their families. Overall, my journey into the healthcare/medicine field is driven by a deep-seated passion for helping others and a commitment to making a difference in the world. I am excited to embark on this path and to dedicate myself to the noble cause of pediatric oncology, where I can truly make a meaningful impact on the lives of children and families facing cancer. The person who inspired me to take on this career is my grandma who just recently passed away from cancer. She battled cancer for six years of her life. She was always an advocate for helping those in need and would often donate to pediatric cancer research to do what she could for the children. I plan on donating my services.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, my personal struggle with self-acceptance has been a challenging journey marked by denial, fear, and eventual self-discovery. For years, I grappled with the conflicting emotions of concealing my true identity while yearning to embrace it openly. Denying my authentic self became a coping mechanism, a shield against societal judgment and rejection. Growing up, I felt the weight of societal expectations and norms pressing down on me, dictating how I should look, act, and love. I internalized these expectations, convincing myself that my feelings were temporary, that I could suppress them and conform to the heteronormative standards imposed upon me. However, the more I denied my true feelings, the more I felt suffocated by the façade I was forced to maintain. Denial gave way to fear – fear of judgment, discrimination, and rejection from those closest to me. I lived in constant apprehension of being discovered, of having my true self exposed to a world that seemed unwilling to accept it. The fear of losing relationships, respect, and acceptance weighed heavily on my shoulders, casting a shadow over my every interaction and decision. Despite my efforts to bury my authentic self beneath layers of denial and fear, I could not escape the truth that lingered within me. Slowly, I began to acknowledge and accept my identity, allowing myself to explore my feelings without judgment or shame. It was a gradual process, marked by moments of clarity and introspection, as well as setbacks and doubts. Eventually, I reached a pivotal moment of self-discovery – a moment of acceptance and liberation. I realized that denying my true identity only perpetuated my inner turmoil and prevented me from living authentically. Embracing my LGBTQ+ identity became an act of self-love and empowerment, a declaration of my right to exist and love freely. While my journey to self-acceptance has been arduous, it has also been transformative. I have emerged from the shadows of denial and fear, embracing my true self with courage and resilience. Today, I stand proudly as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, unapologetically authentic and determined to live my truth. My struggle as an LGBTQ+ individual has taught me the importance of self-acceptance, compassion, and resilience. It has empowered me to advocate for equality, acceptance, and inclusion, both within myself and in the world around me. Though the road ahead may be challenging, I face it with unwavering determination and the knowledge that I am worthy of love, respect, and acceptance – just as I am.
