Who is Kroslyn Faulk-Rivera? I am a driven, self disciplined student who loves learning and working within my community. I’ve been a volunteer at the children’s hospital where my job was to make patients stay at the hospital more enjoyable. I’ve volunteered at my church taking care of babies and guiding them closer to Jesus through reading the children's bible to them. I’ve also volunteered at the library coordinating the events for the children. I enjoy reading books, being in theatre and musical theatre shows, and reading the Bible. I am a positive person who genuinely believes in helping others. I am a team player, who loves people and working alongside like minded people to make a difference in the work they do. I am a worthy candidate of this scholarship because I want to be a Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse (NICU Nurse). Helping babies is my passion. NICU nursing is my calling and it aligns with my beliefs, one in particular would be being of service to others. Being an advocate for a baby is something I am truly more than happy to be, because it reminds me of a point in time when I was younger and I did not have someone too confide in or trust to have my back. Furthermore, me being able to be that for someone else is really special to me. With money from the scholarships I receive I will put it towards getting my bachelors of nursing science degree. This money will help give me the opportunity to pursue my passion and make an impact in the families I service as a nurse.

Book Lovers Scholarship
This book is alive, active, and sharper than any double edge sword, cutting between soul and spirit. This book is known as the Bible. I want everyone to read it because this book has the power to change the trajectory of one's life.
I was an insecure and resentful girl; I was lost and had no identity, on the outside I pretended like everything was fine but on the inside, I was hurting and my world felt like it was crumbling. Throughout this season of my life, I felt so worthless. I came to know the Lord through this life-altering book. Jesus showed me His love for me through the crucifixion. He showed me that He was willing to be beaten to near death, have a crown of thorns put on His head, and hung on the cross painfully for hours so that I would not have to. Here, He showed me just how worth it I truly am.
I began to be filled with love from Jesus. This cutting between soul and spirit book helped me to start living a life that stemmed from an identity rooted in who the Word of God (the Bible) said that I am: I am wonderfully made, I lack nothing because I have Christ, I am made new, I am more than a conquer, and the Lord is for me, who can be against me?
The Bible has changed my life for the better and I love to share how transforming it is. The Bible showed me the Truth and pulled me out of my never-ending darkness. The Bible showed me true love and what it means and looks like to live an abundant full life with God. I want everyone to read the Bible because what this book did for me is more than I could ever put into words and I know it can be that for someone else.

"Black babies are 3 times more likely to die when cared for by white doctors." According to Insider.com. Additionally, according to St. Catherine University, "Patients respond well to a diverse healthcare staff. When they see themselves represented in a nursing staff, patients tend to feel more engaged and participatory. Receiving care from people who share their language, religion, or other cultural similarities creates a sense of familiarity and greater ease." I will use my degree to improve minorities' health by becoming a nurse.
I want to become a neonatal intensive care nurse which is a nurse who takes care of extremely sick babies. Furthermore, being a part of two minority groups will make me a comfort to my patients' parents. Those parents will feel more comfortable with me being their baby's nurse because they have more confidence in me to vouch for and give a higher quality of care to their baby than those who are not a part of our minority groups.
Using my degree I will provide the best possible care for my patient(s). I will be more alert and critical with my analysis of my patients knowing that the doctor could potentially overlook something concerning the minority babies. Additionally, I will advocate for my minority babies even more because I have witnessed what it is like to be dismissed and not taken seriously because of their appearance or the color of their skin. Not advocating for my minority patient could be the death of my patient, and I will not stand by while my patients' lives could be at stake. I have always stood up for myself and others growing up, and this will be a quality that I take with me into nursing. A nurse is someone whose job is to promote and maintain the health of an individual.
Lastly, I will use my degree to be a role model and an inspiration to young minority females. I will show these girls and women that Blacks and Latinas can make it through college and graduate with a degree that can change the world in only a way that females can change it. Additionally, I will show these young girls and women that we people of color can work in healthcare and strive in stressful situations. Furthermore, I want to be an inspiration to my coworkers, I want to show them that advocating for our patients until something is done is the biggest reward we could ever receive.

"Christ is my firm foundation the rock on which I stand when everything around me is shaken I've never been more glad that I put my faith in Jesus. He's never let me down, He's faithful through generations, so why would He fail now? He won't." These are the lyrics from the song "Firm Foundation" by Maverick City Music ft. Chandler Moore and Cody Carnes. I am a follower of Christ. When I chose to follow Jesus I thought that my problems would disappear and that no one would ever be mean to me again. I was wrong. I thought to myself if following Jesus was "the good life" why are things still not going the way I expected them to go? Why am I still struggling with bitterness and pain? Then it dawned on me, choosing Jesus did not mean life's problems would disappear, it meant I would have someone to hold on to and trust when I did go through problems. This song's message is to remind believers that Jesus is faithful, He is our Rock and Protector. When we go through things like anxiety and depression we know to turn to the One who will guide us through these adversities because He is trustworthy. We are reminded of Jesus' character throughout this song. We are reminded that we still have our Savior to trust and believe that He will bring us out on the other side stronger, and stronger in our relationship with Him because His power is made perfect in our weakness. Overall, this song prompts us to not lose hope and to trust that Jesus is there in our toughest times. He has never left us nor forsaken us.
