Hi, I'm Krish Bahel and I'm a senior at Irvington High School in Fremont, California. At a young age, I immigrated to America with my family in search of better opportunities and higher learning. Through college and beyond, I aspire to continue my learning in the field of neurobiology and neuroscience. My goals revolve around pushing the boundaries of the knowledge we hold about our brains. Due to my deep fascination regarding the subconscious and the instinctual part of our cognition, I hope to bring more details regarding the multiple facets of our mind to light. This past year, I have already been working in this field as an independent researcher. My literature review paper dives into the intersection of our explorative and exploitative tendencies. My work is available at https://doi.org/10.58445/rars.674.
I believe I am a strong candidate because of my drive and motivation. I see myself as an independent worker: my motivation tends to be intrinsic, keeping me from becoming reliant or dependent on external pressures. These scholarships would not only ensure that I can continue my research, but they also help me create a clear pathway to leaving a positive imprint on our world.

As I inattentively gazed at the diagram of an ear on the hearing specialist’s desk, my 8-year-old brain struggled to comprehend the gravity behind the complex medical diagnosis that my mother had received. Her eardrums were deteriorating, taking her auditive abilities with them. As I grew older, our visits to the otolaryngologist started becoming repetitive, bringing the same uninspiring results year after year. Eventually, a beacon of hope emerged from the encouraging results promised by stem-cell-based acoustic recovery. Intrigued by the innovative science behind this recovery method, I initiated my own research into the revolutionary impact of stem cells in the world of medicine. I fell further down my rabbit hole of discovery with each article: every line that I read seemed to provide groundbreaking new revelations with astounding implications. This newfound interest not only broadened my understanding of medical science but also fueled a strong desire to contribute to the ongoing discussion about regenerative medicine, in the hope of witnessing transformative breakthroughs that could benefit individuals facing similar health challenges.
Coincidentally, my AP Biology class presented me with an opportunity to further my interest in these transformative cells. While performing a lab regarding the regenerative properties of planarians, a type of flatworm, I became completely immersed in their revolutionary abilities. Unsuspectingly, I had discovered a bridge between minuscule worms and my mother’s condition. My feelings of worry and doubt transformed into those of hope and fascination. The microscopic creatures held the ability to regrow their entire heads, standing as proof of the substantial power of stem cells. This hands-on experience propelled my interest in the immense potential of microscopic cells, pushing me to discover the interconnectedness of cellular signaling through our endocrine system and cellular reproduction.
Auditory cell degeneration: the medical diagnosis that had once instilled worry in my young brain now launches me towards new frontiers of biological learning. By participating in labs and connecting with professors and faculty, I intend to conduct the research I currently find myself reading. Access to cutting-edge technology and industry-leading mentorship will undoubtedly empower me to transform my passion for stem cell regeneration into real-world applications that make a lasting impact on the field and, more importantly, on the lives of those in need. My transformation from a befuddled 8-year-old confronted with the weight of a medical diagnosis to an ambitious researcher inspired by the possibility of stem cells exemplifies the transformational power of curiosity and determination. Planarians' regeneration capacities have become emblematic of the optimism that drives my quest for knowledge, pushing me toward a future when new advances in stem cell research might reshape the landscape of medical therapies. I am positioned to contribute to the continuous story of scientific development and, eventually, to the improvement of lives through creative medical solutions, with a strong awareness of the interconnection of biology and an unshakable dedication to having a lasting influence.
