Hello! I'm Kitana Ford, and I am pursuing a B.S. in Anthropology with a minor in Biological Sciences and a Certificate in Legal Issues in Criminal Justice at ASU. I am a student at Barrett, the Honors College at ASU as well. Additionally, I am pursuing a professional certificate in Cybersecurity from MITxPRO. In addition to my academic pursuits, I am actively involved in various extracurriculars. I serve as the newsletter editor for the IDEAS Student Society, and a writer for both the Spark newsletter and HerCampus Magazine at ASU. I am a member of The Forge at Barrett, the Undergraduate Anthropology Association at ASU, CodeDevils, and Psyched Up Sun Devils. Beyond campus, I am deeply committed to giving back to my community through volunteer work. I've dedicated my time to organizations such as the Arizona Humane Society and the Wildlife World Zoo, where I've had the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of animals and promote conservation efforts. Balancing academics, extracurriculars, and motherhood has its challenges, but I am driven by my passion for learning and my desire to make a positive impact in both my personal and professional endeavors. The Power of Books: How Reading Has Shaped My Aspirations Growing up, books were my sanctuary. Moving frequently, living in the backseat of my mother’s car, staying in women’s shelters, and relying on the couches of family members meant that personal belongings were few, and stability was fleeting. In the midst of these constant changes, books provided a sense of escape and continuity that nothing else could. One book that profoundly impacted me during these tumultuous times was Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. The moral courage of Atticus Finch and the innocence of Scout Finch spoke to me deeply. In a world where I often felt displaced and unheard, the themes of justice and empathy in the novel offered a beacon of hope and a reminder of the importance of standing up for what is right. It inspired me to pursue a career in law, particularly as a medical malpractice attorney, where I can advocate for individuals who need a voice and fight for justice in complex and challenging situations. Robert Liparulo’s Dreamhouse Kings series also played a crucial role in my life. The series, with its thrilling adventures and imaginative worlds, offered me an escape from my challenging reality. The sense of wonder and the exploration of different dimensions provided not just a temporary reprieve but also a sense of possibility and excitement. Liparulo’s portrayal of resilience and bravery in the face of adversity resonated with me deeply and inspired me to approach my own challenges with a similar sense of courage and determination. Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale further shaped my perspective. The story of the two sisters in war-torn France, their struggles, and their resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity highlighted the strength of the human spirit. This novel reinforced my belief in the importance of perseverance and compassion, values that I carry with me as I work towards my career goals. Books were more than mere stories; they were lifelines and sources of inspiration. They offered me a world of stability and reflection amidst the chaos of my life. They shaped my ambition to make a meaningful impact through law, driven by the desire to provide justice and support to those who have been wronged. In addition to pursuing a legal career, I am deeply committed to giving back to the community that has supported me. I aspire to volunteer internationally, particularly focusing on helping children who have not yet learned to read. By helping others discover this transformative power of literature, I hope to inspire future generations to find solace and strength in the pages of a book, just as I did. Receiving this scholarship would provide vital support as I continue my education and work towards my career goals. It would help alleviate some of the financial burdens I face and allow me to focus on my studies, while acknowledging the profound impact that literature has had on my life. In conclusion, the books I have read have been a source of escape, inspiration, and personal growth. They have shaped my aspirations, fueled my ambition, and provided a sense of continuity in a life marked by instability. With this scholarship, I hope to honor the role that literature has played in my journey and to use my education to make a meaningful difference in the world—both through my future legal career and through my commitment to improving literacy for children around the globe.

Navigating New Frontiers: My Journey as a First-Generation College Student My journey as a first-generation college student has been shaped by resilience, sacrifice, and an unwavering determination to overcome adversity. Growing up with a single mother who earned her GED while pregnant with me and later became a pharmacy technician, I witnessed firsthand the power of perseverance and hard work. Despite living in the backseat of our car, staying in women’s shelters, and relying on the kindness of family members for temporary housing, my mother’s unyielding commitment to building a better future for us instilled in me a deep respect for the value of education and determination. These early experiences taught me to face challenges head-on and to view obstacles as opportunities for growth. As I navigated the complexities of higher education without the benefit of family guidance, I drew strength from my mother’s example. Each step in my academic journey—understanding application processes, managing financial aid, and balancing responsibilities—has been a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness I developed from a young age. Currently, as a single mother pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology with a minor in Biological Sciences and a Certificate in Legal Issues, I am driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact through my diverse academic interests. My studies in anthropology and biological sciences have deepened my understanding of human and environmental issues, while my legal studies are laying the groundwork for my future career in law. My ultimate career goal is to attend law school and become a medical malpractice attorney. This aspiration is driven by a commitment to advocate for individuals who have been harmed by medical negligence. I am particularly motivated by the desire to ensure that victims of medical errors receive justice and proper representation. My interdisciplinary education will enable me to approach legal challenges from a well-rounded perspective, combining scientific knowledge with legal expertise to effectively address complex malpractice cases. Balancing the demands of parenthood with rigorous academic pursuits has been challenging, yet it has strengthened my resolve and adaptability. My experiences as a single mother have given me a unique perspective on the importance of education and the role it plays in creating a better future. They have also deepened my commitment to using my knowledge to contribute positively to both my community and my field of study. In addition to my academic and career aspirations, I am passionate about mentoring others who are navigating their own educational journeys. I understand the importance of having guidance and support, and I am dedicated to offering encouragement and assistance to future first-generation students. By sharing my experiences and insights, I hope to help others overcome their challenges and pursue their goals with confidence. Receiving this scholarship would provide essential support in continuing my education and achieving my career objectives. It would alleviate some of the financial burdens I face and allow me to focus on my studies and personal growth while acknowledging the unique challenges that first-generation students and single parents encounter. In conclusion, my journey as a first-generation college student and single mother has shaped my educational path and career goals. The challenges I have faced and the example set by my mother have instilled in me a profound sense of purpose and resilience. With this scholarship, I hope to continue overcoming obstacles, achieving my aspirations, and inspiring others to follow their own paths toward success.

Title: A Journey of Self-Improvement and Determination: Setting an Example for My Son Becoming a mother at the age of 20 presented me with a new set of challenges and responsibilities, but it also ignited a fire within me to strive for self-improvement and success. As I celebrated my 21st birthday with a 3-month-old baby in my arms, I embarked on a journey filled with sleepless nights, endless pumping sessions, and the relentless pursuit of my educational goals. Throughout my pregnancy, which was marked by high risk and difficulty, I made the difficult decision to take time off from school. This setback pushed back my graduation date by a year, but it also reinforced my determination to overcome obstacles and succeed despite the odds stacked against me. From the moment my son entered the world, I was determined to provide him with the best possible future, setting an example of perseverance and determination through my actions. Despite the challenges of breastfeeding for nearly 1.5 years, I remained committed to my studies, often submitting assignments and studying with a baby on my lap or while pumping milk in the early hours of the morning. The demands of motherhood meant that I had to learn to juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously. I submitted assignments while in labor, worked on projects during my son's first birthday party, and tackled coursework in between changing diapers, soothing tantrums, and ensuring my son reached important milestones. Before becoming a mother, I was known for my occasional procrastination and lack of effective study methods. However, motherhood transformed me into a determined and disciplined individual. While I still encounter the occasional late assignment, I now work harder than ever before, sacrificing sleep and personal time to achieve my goals. My son serves as my greatest inspiration and motivation. I want him to grow up knowing that he can accomplish anything he sets his mind to, even with a baby on his hip. I strive to show him that I have achieved everything I set out to do because of him, and I never want him to feel like he stood in the way of my dreams. In conclusion, my journey of self-improvement and determination is driven by my desire to set a positive example for my son. Through hard work, perseverance, and unwavering dedication, I aim to show him that anything is possible with determination and perseverance. As I continue on my educational journey, I do so with the knowledge that every sacrifice I make is an investment in his future and a testament to the power of love, determination, and resilience.

Title: A Beacon of Support: My Grandparent's Role in My Educational Journey From the moment I embarked on my college journey, my grandparents have been my unwavering source of support, guiding me through the highs and lows with unconditional love and encouragement. Their impact on my educational pursuits has been immeasurable, shaping the trajectory of my path and empowering me to overcome challenges with resilience and determination. When I made the transition from Lake Havasu City to Phoenix, Arizona, to pursue my college education, my grandparents opened their home to me without hesitation. Recognizing the importance of keeping my beloved dog by my side, they selflessly welcomed us both into their home, ensuring that I had a stable and nurturing environment in which to pursue my dreams. Their generosity and kindness alleviated the stress of finding housing and allowed me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies at Grand Canyon University (GCU). Beyond providing a roof over my head, my grandparents played a pivotal role in navigating the complexities of financial aid and support programs. With their guidance, I successfully completed applications for FAFSA, EBT, and Medicaid, gaining access to vital resources that I had long been without. For the first time since childhood, I had health insurance, a means to attend college, the assurance of never going hungry and the assurance of having a consistent home. Their unwavering support gave me the stability and security I needed to thrive academically and personally. Amidst the demands of a rigorous academic schedule and campus employment, my grandmother continued to be my rock, offering invaluable assistance and encouragement every step of the way. From attending five classes, including lectures and labs, to working on campus, my days were long and demanding. Yet, knowing that my grandmother was caring for my dog and providing meals alleviated the burden, allowing me to focus on my studies with peace of mind. Furthermore, my grandparents' support extended beyond the confines of my college campus. They generously helped me purchase my first car, alleviated financial burdens by assisting with tuition balances, and provided unwavering encouragement as I transferred to Arizona State University (ASU) to pursue my educational goals. Even after relocating to Texas, they remain my steadfast cheerleaders, reminding me to stay focused on my vision and to pursue my dreams relentlessly. As I navigate the joys and challenges of motherhood while pursuing my education, my grandmother continues to be my pillar of strength. When she visits, she selflessly lends a helping hand by watching over my son, allowing me precious time to study and excel academically. Her unwavering support has been the cornerstone of my educational journey, empowering me to overcome obstacles and persevere through adversity. In conclusion, my grandparents' unwavering support has been the bedrock of my educational journey, guiding me through the trials and triumphs with boundless love and encouragement. From providing a stable home and financial assistance to offering emotional support and motivation, their presence has been a beacon of light, illuminating the path to my dreams. Without their steadfast support, I would not have had the courage or resilience to pursue my educational aspirations and build a better future for myself and my family.
