Malcolm X said, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” As an immigrant, a German-Nigerian woman, and the first in my family to attend medical school, I advocate for socially invisible or otherwise alienated populations in healthcare through contextualized evidence-based models of care. My prior work with refugees at the Bellevue Program for Survivors of Torture, where I served as Patient Advocate for two years, only strengthened this resolve. Originally from a small farming community in Northern Germany (along the Dutch border) I moved to Newark, NJ, as a little girl. With a fervent passion for reading and language learning, I was a voracious reader since childhood and would like to learn Mandarin as my fifth language! Having lived and learned in rural, urban, and suburban environments both domestically and abroad, I view myself as a global citizen and advocate for the transformative power of higher education inside and outside of the classroom. A graduate of Malcolm X Shabazz High School (’17), Harvard College (’21), and now an M2 at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, my focus was always medicine though my academic and extracurricular passions remain broad. I captained various high school sports teams and earned my Varsity Letter, published and presented research in Aquatic Microbiology while in high school, and wrote my college senior thesis in vertebrate paleontology. I love learning for learning’s sake. Danke fürs Lesen!
