Hi my name is Kiana but everyone calls me Kiki! From the eighteen years I’ve been on this planet most of my passions have always included being creative. To experimenting with recipes in the kitchen or somehow putting the elaborate stories in my head on paper, there hasn’t been a day in my life where I haven’t had an itch to make something.
Often when you have that magnetic pull to the arts, high school gets in the way. From worrying about if my SATs scores are high enough to the constant fear of my GPA dropping, school can take an emotional toll on anyone. That is why going to a university that has me strengthen my creative abilities would be an absolute dream.
As a kid, seeing my single mom doing the best that she can to have me achieve my goals and dreams, it would be an absolute joy to have enough money from scholarships to take that burden off of her. My entire family are immigrants from Jamaica and being a first generation college student is one of the long list of dreams and goals they have for me. It would be an honor to have you be apart of that coming true!

When I walked around my neighborhood all I saw was were Burger Kings and smoke shops. There was no walkable grocery stores near by and even if you could make it to one fresh fruit and produce was extremely expensive. The cheapest thing was to buy some French fries and a whopper. Of course both of those things aren’t the most nutritious things to put your body. So with the cost of living increasing by the day and wanting people to eat more nutritiously I was faced with a very hard choice. On top of my very busy schedule with being an honor student and Vice President of my class I decided to make a community garden with my grandfather. Me and him worked endlessly to harvest fruits and vegetables like pineapple, tomatoes, peppers, ackee, mangos, and so much more. Me and him had been working at this garden since the pandemic but unfortunately I had to take on the brunt of the work recently. My grandpa was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer earlier this year and it felt like my entire world stopped none of it felt real. I couldn’t eat I couldn’t sleep I even had to take a couple of days off of school. Seeing him struggle to water our produce broke my heart and for a while I contemplated just ending the community garden all together. As quick as thought came another flash of my grandpa’s friendly warm smile giving our pineapples to next door neighbors come and I kick myself for even thinking the former. Continuing to the garden made me more patient and since I had to give the fruit out it made my relationship with my community even stronger than ever. Community has always been something I prioritized but getting to have in depth conversations with the people you live with is lost and I personally feel like the more individualistic we are the less prone we are to making progress as a community. The advice I would give to families dealing with cancer diagnoses is to be surrounded by others. Dealing with this alone isn’t normal there are tons of families who have been through what mines have and I personally feel like the reminder that you aren’t alone is one that I value a lot. I really hope to continue the garden for as long as I can. I know my grandpa’s cancer will be gone by the time I move out of the area. I’m sure of it!

Eunice Richardson Scholarship for Girls
The faults in our world are numerous and varied, ranging from systemic issues like poverty and inequality to environmental degradation and social injustice. These problems can seem daunting and overwhelming, leaving many feeling powerless to make a difference. However, while the challenges we face are significant, they are not insurmountable. With determination, empathy, and collective action, we can work towards addressing these faults and creating a more just and equitable world for all.
One of the most pervasive faults in our world is poverty. Despite advances in technology and economic growth, millions of people around the globe still struggle to meet their basic needs. Poverty perpetuates cycles of inequality, limiting access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. To address this issue, we must work towards creating more equitable systems that ensure everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive. This can involve advocating for policies that promote economic empowerment, supporting grassroots organizations that provide assistance to those in need, and volunteering our time and resources to uplift marginalized communities.
Another pressing fault in our world is environmental degradation. Climate change, deforestation, pollution, and loss of biodiversity are threatening the health of our planet and the well-being of future generations. To combat these issues, we must prioritize sustainability and conservation efforts. This can involve reducing our carbon footprint by adopting cleaner energy sources and practicing responsible consumption, supporting initiatives that protect and restore natural habitats, and advocating for policies that address environmental degradation at both local and global levels.
Social injustice is another fault that plagues our world, manifesting in various forms such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and discrimination based on religion, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. These injustices perpetuate inequality and marginalization, denying individuals their fundamental rights and dignity. To combat social injustice, we must work towards creating more inclusive and equitable societies where everyone is treated with respect and dignity. This can involve challenging discriminatory attitudes and behaviors, advocating for policies that promote equality and diversity, and supporting grassroots movements that fight for justice and human rights.
Changing the faults in our world requires a multifaceted approach that involves individuals, communities, governments, and organizations working together towards common goals. It requires empathy, compassion, and a commitment to justice and equality for all. While the challenges we face may seem daunting, every small action we take towards positive change has the potential to make a difference. By coming together and working towards a shared vision of a better world, we can overcome the faults that divide us and build a brighter future for generations to come.

From the moment I was able to speak, I was surrounded by the tenderness and joy of cooking. My kitchen was always booming with the sounds of whisks hitting metal bowls or knives chopping against cutting boards. The smell of pimento and . Food has been an outlet in my family for generations. My great-grandma used to share homemade bulla with kids in her neighborhood back in Jamaica.
My grandmother used to slave away in the kitchen to form and fry festival for any family function. My mom consistently makes Rotel Dip for every Honor Roll Certificate I bring back from school. If anybody in my family shared food with you, it was an expression of their love and gratitude for you. So it didn’t take any hesitation or second thought to pick food science as my major in . None of the women in my family had the opportunity or the resources to study food academically. My great-grandmother was an illiterate woman who eventually went blind in Jamaica, and my grandmother was a single mom and didn’t have time to invest in herself academically. So as soon as I learned about scholarships and what they could do for me as a first-generation Jamaican student, I took school seriously. Every test, every quiz, and every homework assignment has all led up to this. Seeing my single mom struggle was just the motivation to take school seriously so as to not stress her out about college. My mom is very adamant about getting my degree and making a stable career for myself, and I can’t fault her for doing so. I come from a long history of people who weren't given the opportunity or privilege to make something of themselves. A history of people who immigrated to America for new and better opportunities I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if getting my degree was prevented by a lack of finances. With my Food Science degree, I hope to have a long and flourishing career in food engineering. I’ve always been fascinated with the preservation of food and the steps taken to prevent it from spoiling. I think food production as a whole is a completely riveting process. Being responsible for the food that consumers eat seems like a very tedious and stressful job, but I think the pressure of it all is just the environment that would help me thrive
