Bio

I am Khanh Ha, a college freshman majoring in Computer Science, double minoring in Mathematics and Data Science. I am deeply enthusiastic about technology!! In the next decade, I envision myself as a software engineer, using my skills to establish a non-profit. This organization will provide educational resources and networking opportunities for underrepresented individuals in technology. Beyond educational programs, it will host webinars, fairs, and hackathons to foster curiosity and interest. An environment where the next generation can learn, grow, and connect is what I am striving for and what my future organization will contribute. The desire to give back to my community never leaves me, and I am committed to making this a reality one day.

Standing in front of all the assemblymen and legislators, I could feel my legs shaking. It was not a usual presentation in front of other students. However, I remembered why I was standing there: I was chosen to spread the need for a sustainable computer science program in schools. I was able to convey my experience in AP Computer Science and how it assisted me on my pathway to the decision of computer science as I hope other students would have the same chance. After the event, it dawned on me the absence of computer science teaching in my countryside. Among all my cousins who chose to move to the city to pursue a college education, not one followed the technology-related path. The answer was not that they were not interested in technology; in fact, it was the common topic we exchanged daily. However, due to the limited teaching and learning in school, the success of aiming for computer science in college, as they believed, would merely be an illusion. The thought that their levels would never be the same as those coming from the city always hovered over them, and eventually, it became their ultimate barrier to computer science. As a college graduate with a degree in either data science or computer science, I want to be the inspiration for the next generation that everyone should have a chance to be involved in this field. Combining my technological and teaching skills, I hope to found a non-profit organization in my countryside where students interested in technology will have an opportunity to develop, grow, and connect with experts. This future organization will not only provide computer science tutoring but will also hold informational webinars, such as career development, with intellectual guest speakers. Moreover, academics always goes in harmony with practice. The organization will carry out several events to encourage young children's curiosity and interest. For example, a debate competition about multiple technological topics will strengthen students' ability to voice their opinions while also boosting their public speaking skills. A Hackathon will provide the children an opportunity to converse with others who share a common interest and goal as well as apply their knowledge into practice. I remember the first time I came across FreeCodeCamp, a free coding platform. Excitement raced through me as I delved into the fundamentals, and whenever I coded, my curiosity was inflamed with exploration. After completing courses on HTML, CSS, and Javascript, I dug into Youtube videos every day to expand my knowledge, and I fell in love with computers, numbers, and data. At first, they resembled messy chunks of arrays that I would never be able to decipher, but as I continued programming, I couldn’t help but embrace that limitless creativity and the eagerness to figure out the puzzle. From a girl who knew nothing, I became intrigued by the unlimited aspects of technology. Therefore, I chose to make an impact in the computer science field since there are students who may go through the same experience as I did but lack the ultimate opportunity due to their circumstances. This future organization will not only be my journey, but it will also become the next generation's pathway to computer science. The desire to give back to my community never leaves me, and one day, that desire will come true with the help of William A. Stuart Dream Scholarship.

    1. Khanh Ha's sticker obsession has gone, but on her laptop exist some. Each sticker represents an aspect of her. "Allow yourself to be a beginner. No one starts off being excellent" - Her curiosity prompted her, who had no clue about coding, to click on "Get Started" on FreeCodeCamp.com. At that time, hundreds of lines of code resembled undecipherable chunks of arrays, but from a girl who knew nothing about programming, Khanh Ha became one having a dream of inspiring it. "Make yourself proud" - the word "author" stands next to her name when her book emerges on Amazon. Never had she thought about publishing a book before, but her love for writing and impacting led her to achieve this goal. "Positive energy" - Khanh Ha was crouching by the toilet, trying to throw up the pizza she consumed. The eating disorder was her friend and enemy. But thanks to those best friends shedding light on her life, she hopes to be the light for others, bringing positivity. "Make your sunshine" - she finds herself exploring unique parks depicting the beauty of nature, which is what she enjoys. Beauty is sunshine as long as we see everything stunning, she realizes. "Nerd" - If she had a wish, she would choose to be fluent in over 7000 languages, meaning having over 7000 souls. The number of stickers does not stop there since her journey has a long way to go. But looking at them, she can see the changes she has grown through. 2. I remember the first time I came across FreeCodeCamp, a free coding platform. The moment I landed in the US, the new country, my thoughts and feelings shifted. Desperation shadowed me as I coveted new social interactions that the pandemic and remote learning took away from me. I was unable to make any friends through the computer screen but only kept in touch with friends from my country; however, a 12-hour difference was an enormous barrier between us. Life put this tough challenge on me, but I got through it. I fell in love with reading, which then triggered my love for writing. Instead of bottling my feelings up, I expressed them through writing - a hobby that I never picked up when I was in Vietnam. When the sky was covered by the blackness of midnight, and I was laying under my cozy blanket and journaling my thoughts, a thought popped up: "What if I produced my own book?" That thought turned into immediate action. I chose the topic of learning languages as a person who was learning three different languages at that time. The process of researching and writing about language learning proved to be a captivating and engrossing task for me. I was immersing myself in the task that I often realized several hours had passed by. The process gradually turned into ideas, and they began to take shape, and before I knew it, I had a draft of a book in front of me. The thought, which was once a dream, then came true. “8 Secrets of Learning a Language”, authored by Khanh Ha Nguyen, was published on Amazon Kindle seven months later. On those pages, I offered practical advice and understanding on the path to studying a foreign language effectively, including tips on reviewing, grammar, vocabulary, and more. I hope that "8 Secrets of Learning a Language" will become an inspiration and a guideline for others on their language learning journeys.

It was September 30th, 2020, in Vietnam. The clock was ticking, signaling that time for the last goodbye was running out. Some exchanged long-lasting hugs; others tried to brush away the tears on their swollen faces so that they could wish the people who were going away good luck with smiles instead of tears. My family and relatives were among those people. Soon, the clock pointed to 11:45 pm. I found myself sitting on the plane, head resting on Mom’s shoulder, with red eyes. “Ladies & Gentlemen, we are approaching New York where the local time is 11:00”, the airline announcement echoed as I woke up from a long sleep. The moment I landed in the US, my thoughts and feelings shifted. Desperation shadowed me as I coveted new social interactions that the pandemic and remote learning took away from me. I was unable to make any friends through the computer screen but only kept in touch with friends from my country; however, a 12-hour difference was an enormous barrier between us. Having many sleepless nights, I shakingly hid my tears under the blanket, both because of missing my old friends and the lack of new friends. Life put this tough challenge on me, and I initially believed I failed to move on. But everything has a silver lining: a positive and bright window that I can look for in a negative situation. This turning point in my life revealed another persona of myself: a reader and writer. The book on my bedside became my refuge, whose world I let myself flow into. The book cover felt amazing, and every page I turned loaded off one burden on my back. And the love for reading triggered the love for writing. I was immersing myself in the task that I often lost track of time, realizing that several hours had passed by. The book is composed of both my experience and knowledge of learning languages as well as analyzing different views from different learners. On those pages, I offered practical advice and understanding on the path to studying a foreign language effectively, including tips on reviewing, grammar, vocabulary, and more. I hope that "8 Secrets of Learning a Language" will become an inspiration and a guideline for others on their language learning journeys. This ever-changing move has brought about a new perspective for me and trained me to become a more fearless person: a girl who knows that she can achieve her goal, a girl who knows how to express her feelings and thoughts on the page, and a girl who believes there was always a positive side in a negative circumstance.

After the event, I realized the lack of computer science teaching in my countryside had never gone away. Among all my cousins who chose to move to the city to pursue a college education, not one followed the technology-related path. Due to the limited teaching and learning in school, the success of aiming for computer science in college, as they believed, would merely be an illusion. The thought that their levels would never be the same as those coming from the city always hovered over them, and eventually, it became their ultimate barrier to computer science. Intending to obtain a degree in either data science or computer science, I will not let the financial struggle be the barrier stopping me from being the inspiration for the next generation. During my academic journey, I will balance learning and having a job with my organizing skill. Since such a young age, my mom has taught me the sweat and tears of earning a money bill. Aiming to reduce the financial burden on my parents, I am applying for this scholarship. This future organization will not only be my journey but also the next generation's pathway to computer science. The desire to give back to my community never leaves me, and one day, that desire will come true with the help of this scholarship.
