We often overlook the phenomenon of mental health and ignore the pleas of those who so desperately call out for help. Through my journey as a Black woman navigating through the pandemic, I realized that there weren’t many opportunities out there in the world for us. There aren’t many who are willing to reach out and help us navigate through the many struggles and hardships that we face. I sat and pondered on all the stories I’ve heard from others within the black community that has expressed the lack of resources given to black people. With this, I realized that being a resource of expression is all that people need. I never had that resource. I’ve never had someone who I could come to that would openly listen without judgement. I never had someone willing to listen and hear my side. Every single trial of finding help ended up with me being labeled. I often heard the whispers of others throwing out negative stereotypes and ideologies of women of color. These words cut deep and played a huge role in why I decided I wanted to study psychology and become a voice of advocacy for my community. Over time, I’ve molded into a goal-oriented individual and have since used my past to shape my future. I put more effort into my learning and have gained a sense of responsibility. This experience is the foundation for my interest in studying psychology and has furthered my knowledge of the lack of mental guidance and help for the black community. I’ve always felt like I’ve never had enough support to work through my problems. I lived in a single-parent home which made it very hard for my mother to balance all of her responsibilities. I’ve heard the perspectives of young black adults who have experienced a yearning for recognition and this Is why I want to explore and create opportunities to help them express their voices. I want to be an entity of free expression for them. I want to prove to them that there’s always someone willing to listen and hear you out. Going to Study this field will open the door for many others to pursue a career in mental health studies which will help bring more awareness to mental health in the black community. Studying in this field will not only bring about comfort for my younger self, but It will also set the tone of just how important it is to take care of your mental health. The lack of awareness within the black community on this subject must be corrected. I hope that my efforts will help build up my community’s trust in counselors and therapists. I want to emphasize the importance of dealing with your problems in a healthy manner and bring more attention to all of the resources that are just at our fingertips. I believe that my many efforts will soon strengthen the black community and bring us closer than ever before in such difficult times.

September 17th, 2017, was the first time I didn't feel sad. I was in the office of my therapist. More precisely, I was facedown on a table in my therapist's office. It may appear to be a simple trick, but it was one I'd spent years trying to master. I used this trick to ground myself with the earth. Although this might seem like such an odd trick it honestly brought me comfort. It made me feel completely whole which is a feeling I had been missing for a while now. This feeling was the beginning of my recovery story and while it was a long journey this experience molded me into the individual I am today. Growing up I´ve always had problems pertaining to my behavior and my relationship with my mom. We could never see eye to eye which led to many arguments. My home and school life had been affected by this as well as my social life. My grades started falling as well as I had begun to experience the early stages of depression. At first, I felt isolated, ignored, and abandoned, but now I have realized this circumstance has helped me gain more perspective and purpose within my life. Over time, I've molded into a goal-oriented individual and have used my past to shape my future. I've put more effort into my learning, and have gained a sense of responsibility. This experience as well as my family was the foundation for my interest in psychology. Going through this has furthered my knowledge of the lack of mental health awareness in the world and within my personal life. I have sat and watched my family not only ignore my symbolic calls for help but other children within my family. I've heard the perspectives of young adults who have expressed their want for support, I want to be their voice. I want to prove that there are always people willing to hear you and listen. In the future, I want to pursue a career within the psychology field specifically working with children. I want to be a source of support for teens and children who feel as though they don't have the support within their family dynamic. Pursuing a career in this field encompasses my dream as a young girl to help those who went through the same struggles as me. My studies in this field will prove to my younger self that dreams are always within fingertip's reach.

We often overlook the phenomenon of mental health in children and ignore their pleas. Some children want love, some children want stability, and some just want a listening ear. Through my own journey, I realized that despite my pain I could be there for them. I could be the one listening ear they needed who would believe them. I sat and pondered on all the stories I've heard from the children I've met, and have come to the realisation that being a resource of expression is all that people need. I've never had that resource. I've never had someone who I could come to that would openly listen without judgmental undertones. I never had someone who was willing to listen and hear my side. Every single trail of finding help ended up with me being labeled. I often heard the mummers of “ troubled,” “disrespectful,” and “crazy” escape the mouths of those around me.
