My name is Kevin Meiler, and I am a senior at Oxford Area High School. I was a classmate and neighbor of Avani. Like Avani, I enjoy playing tennis and have been on the varsity high school team for the past few years. I would love the opportunity to carry on Avani's passion of helping others through my studies at Clemson University. There, I will major in biology and continue on to medical school. I visited Clemson over the summer and knew right away that was where I wanted to study for the next four years. I have maintained a 4.26 GPA throughout my high school career and have been a teacher's assistant for human anatomy and biology class this year. I am looking forward to the challenges of becoming a doctor.
I knew I wanted to be a doctor at a young age when both of my grandmother's, of whom I was very close to, passed away as a result of cancer. A few years later, my aunt passed away from cancer at a young age and now my grandfather was recently diagnosed also. With my mom being a nurse and always wanting to help people, I haven't thought about doing anything else. These are the reasons I want to become a doctor so that I can help people and keep them well.
This past summer, my mom And I were walking to lunch at the shore when we saw a lady fall and hit her face on the ground. Both my mom and I went running to help her. We were able to get the bleeding stopped, call for help, call her family, and calm her down. She was very appreciative, as well as her family, that we could be there for her being as though she was a cancer patient also. I felt really good that I could help and was not nervous to assist her in any way. It affirmed that this is what I want to do in the future.
I know the medical field and the road ahead will be very challenging and require a lot of time, effort, and energy but I know this is what I really want to do. Thank you for considering me to carry on the spirit of Avani through this scholarship. I would be very appreciative of this award as it would help me achieve my goal of becoming a doctor.
