Innovators of Color in STEM Scholarship
I chose to pursue a degree in computer science because I am passionate about the ways STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—can transform the world. Computer science is at the heart of STEM, providing the tools and systems that drive innovation in nearly every field. From artificial intelligence and data science to robotics and cybersecurity, computer science combines the creativity of problem-solving with the logic of mathematics and the exploration of technology. It’s a perfect fit for my interests and my desire to make a meaningful impact.
STEM as a whole is about using knowledge to solve problems, and computer science gives me the opportunity to do that through technology. It challenges me to think critically, build algorithms, and develop software that improves lives. For example, coding has taught me how to approach problems methodically, breaking them into smaller parts and finding efficient solutions. This same logic is used across STEM disciplines, whether solving scientific challenges, designing engineering systems, or analyzing mathematical models. By mastering computer science, I gain the ability to collaborate with other STEM fields and contribute to innovations that shape our future.
As a person of color pursuing a STEM degree in computer science, I am deeply motivated to make a difference by increasing diversity in this field. Representation matters, and I want to show others from underrepresented backgrounds that they, too, can thrive in STEM. Diverse perspectives are critical for creating technology that serves everyone. When people from all walks of life contribute their ideas, we build better, more inclusive solutions. I hope to inspire others in my community to see STEM as a place where they belong and can succeed.
My goal is to use my skills in computer science to solve real-world problems, especially those affecting underserved communities. For example, I am interested in using technology to improve access to education, healthcare, and resources for sustainable development. These are STEM challenges that require innovative computer science solutions, like apps to connect students with digital learning tools or software to manage renewable energy systems. Computer science, as part of STEM, gives me the ability to tackle these problems and create a lasting impact.
In addition to developing technology, I want to mentor others who are interested in STEM. Supporting young people, especially from diverse backgrounds, is important to me. I believe that sharing my experiences and encouraging others to explore computer science can help build a more inclusive future. STEM fields thrive when people collaborate and bring their unique perspectives, and I want to contribute to this by inspiring and guiding the next generation.
Pursuing computer science within STEM is about more than just personal success—it’s about driving innovation and making the world better. As someone passionate about technology and committed to equity, I am excited to push boundaries, create solutions, and inspire others. By blending computer science with the collaborative power of STEM, I hope to leave a meaningful and lasting impact.

Entering higher education as a second-generation immigrant brings a unique set of hopes and concerns shaped by my upbringing and family background. My journey so far has been influenced by the aspirations of my parents, the challenges of navigating cultural identity, and a deep-seated determination to achieve my goals despite the obstacles.
As a second-generation immigrant, my educational path has been characterized by a dual identity—navigating the expectations and values of my family's heritage while embracing the opportunities and challenges of the educational system in my adopted country. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices my parents made to provide me with access to quality education and better opportunities than they had. At times, my mom worked two jobs just to ensure our comfort and stability, ensuring we were safe from trouble.
The experience of being a second-generation immigrant has profoundly impacted my educational journey by shaping my perspective on diversity, inclusion, and the importance of representation. It has motivated me to advocate for educational equity and to challenge systemic barriers that hinder the academic success of marginalized communities. I am driven by a desire to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, have equal access to educational resources and support networks that empower them to thrive.
However, alongside my hopes, I carry concerns about the persistent challenges faced by second-generation immigrants in higher education. The pressure to balance cultural expectations with academic pursuits can be overwhelming at times, compounded by financial constraints and the lack of familial guidance in navigating the complexities of college admissions and career planning. There are also concerns about encountering discrimination or biases that may hinder opportunities for advancement.
Nevertheless, these challenges fuel my determination to persevere and advocate for change. I am committed to overcoming obstacles, breaking down barriers, and paving the way for future generations of second-generation immigrants to achieve their dreams. My journey into higher education is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of education to transform lives. It is a journey that I undertake with gratitude for the opportunities afforded to me by my parents' sacrifices and with a sense of responsibility to contribute positively to society.
In conclusion, entering higher education as a second-generation immigrant is a journey marked by both challenges and opportunities. It has shaped my identity, fueled my aspirations, and equipped me with the determination to make a meaningful impact. With perseverance, support, and a commitment to equity, I am confident that I can achieve my goals and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape for all.
