Bio

My name is Kerry Mitchell and I am a husband, father, grandfather, and minister from the great state of Alabama. My wife and I have raised 6 children and are very active in the lives of our 13 grandchildren, so, you can say that family is second nature to me. Before starting our family, I went to work straight out of high school and worked in several areas including the steel industry, wholesale supply, and retail distribution. My last job was with Target as a Human Resources Team Leader where I my passion and drive to help individuals and families strive came full circle. Unfortunately, since I did not have a college degree, I could only go so far, so in August of 2020 we were blessed to do exactly that. Going on to college had been a thought for me, but I didn’t pursue it while we were raising our kids, but this seemed to me to be the right time to do it. So, with the help of the LORD, support from my wife and family, and some hard work and dedication, we were able to earn our Bachelor of Science degree in Ministry Leadership/Counseling this pass May and are looking forward to continuing that process by entering the Masters program for Counseling. Like Mrs. Geneva, I am thankful for the second chance to further my education and continue to press forward towards the goal of helping individuals and families strive in life! Thank you for taking the time to read about my story!

Harvey and Geneva Mabry Second Time Around Scholarship
Hello. My name is Kerry Mitchell and am honored to be considered for this scholarship in honor of Mr. Harvey and Mrs. Geneva Mabry. My wife and family are from Alabama where I was born and raised. I have worked in several capacities during my adult life, which included some time at the local steel mill, distribution company, and one of the major retailers. Upon graduation from high school, I was more concerned about making a living instead of going to college, so I went headfirst into that. Starting out in the lawn and landscaping business, I quickly found out that making a living was not as easy I thought it would be. As I reflect upon my journey, I can see how the hand of GOD was with me, teaching, molding, and shaping me for the guy. After a short stint there, I went to work for O’Neal Steel for five years, where I learned a lot about teamwork and being productive. After that, I went to work for Hughes Supply, where I learned a ton about networking, teamwork and management. This is also the time in my life where I gave my heart to the LORD, a very exciting time in my life! After, Hughes, I was able to be a part of the Target Corporation family for 13 years, where I was developed the most throughout my professional career! With some structural changes, the position I worked as a Human Resources Team Leader was restructured so that only those experience could not take the place of a degree was put into place. Now, returning to college had been a thought of mine for quite sometime, and in 2020, that became a reality. This is when I enrolled at Lee University in the Ministry Leadership and Counseling Program. Throughout my life, listening to others and trying to help them through their difficulties has been prevalent and marriage and family therapy/counseling, I believe is the way to continue to do just that. I just received my Bachelor of Science degree back on May 6th and plan on going into the Masters program this fall, possibly at UAB. Currently, my wife and I are pastoring in Alabama, and I must say, the tools that I was equipped with during my tenure at Lee University has definitely come in handy! Again, I believed that the hand of GOD has led us to this moment and season of life. Thank you for your time and consideration for this second chance around scholarship in honor of Mrs. Geneva and Mr. Harvey Mabry!
