If I had the extraordinary opportunity to have everyone in the world read just one book by an African American author, I would choose "Beloved" by Toni Morrison. This remarkable novel delves into the complexities of African American history, identity, and the enduring impact of slavery. Through Morrison's masterful storytelling and poetic prose, "Beloved" offers a profound exploration of the human experience, confronting painful truths and highlighting the indomitable spirit of resilience and love. Choosing an African American author allows us to celebrate the richness and diversity of African American literature. African American authors have contributed significantly to the literary canon, bringing forth unique perspectives, experiences, and narratives that deserve widespread recognition. By choosing an African American author, we uplift voices that have been historically marginalized and bring greater awareness to the African American literary tradition.
"Beloved" tackles the legacy of slavery and its lasting effects on individuals and communities. Set in post-Civil War America, the novel follows the life of Sethe, a former slave who escaped to freedom. Morrison skillfully weaves together past and present, blurring the lines between memory and reality, as she delves into the profound trauma and haunting consequences of slavery. By confronting this painful history, "Beloved" forces readers to reckon with the legacy of slavery and its far-reaching impact on African American lives. Identity is a central theme in "Beloved." Morrison highlights the struggle of African Americans to define themselves and reclaim their identities in a society shaped by oppression. The characters in the novel navigate the complexities of race, gender, and history as they grapple with the weight of the past and strive to forge their paths. "Beloved" serves as a poignant exploration of the multifaceted nature of identity and the indomitable spirit that can emerge from adversity.
Amidst the pain and trauma, love emerges as a powerful force of healing and redemption in "Beloved." The characters in the novel strive to find solace, connection, and a sense of belonging through love and community. Morrison's portrayal of love is transformative, illustrating its ability to nurture the human spirit and provide a path toward healing and restoration. Through "Beloved," readers are reminded of the enduring power of love even in the face of unimaginable suffering. "Beloved" has the potential to unite us in a shared journey of empathy, compassion, and the recognition of our collective humanity.

Selflessness is an extraordinary virtue that reflects our willingness to put others' needs before our own. It is an inherent quality that fosters compassion, empathy, and a sense of responsibility towards the well-being of others. By sharing my experiences of collecting coats and socks, toiletries and school supplies, sanitary products, and distributing food, I hope to shed light on the importance of selflessness and inspire others to make a positive difference in their communities.
One of the ways I embody selflessness is through my involvement with the Iota Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Together with the members of this organization, we organized a coat and sock drive for women and children in need. Recognizing the importance of warmth and comfort, especially during harsh winters, we reached out to the local community, friends, and family to donate coats and socks. Through our collective efforts, we were able to provide numerous individuals with much-needed protection against the cold. Witnessing the gratitude and relief on the faces of those who received these items was a humbling experience that further reinforced my commitment to selflessness.
Another instance of embodying selflessness occurred when I joined the Rainbow Club at Charles Herbert Flowers High School. Together, we organized a campaign to collect toiletries and school supplies for homeless LGBTQ+ youth in our community. Recognizing the additional challenges faced by this marginalized group, we aimed to provide them with essentials and support their educational endeavors. By engaging with local businesses, seeking donations, and raising awareness through social media platforms, we were able to gather a significant number of supplies. Witnessing the impact of our efforts on the lives of these young individuals instilled in me a sense of fulfillment and strengthened my belief in the power of selfless acts.
In collaboration with the IGO Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., I participated in a campaign to collect sanitary products for young females within the Prince George's County School System. Recognizing the financial and societal challenges that hinder access to these essential items, we aimed to break the stigma and ensure that no young woman in our community would be denied this basic necessity. By organizing donation drives at schools and community centers, we were able to collect a substantial amount of sanitary products. The knowledge that our efforts contributed to the well-being and dignity of young females inspired me to continue embodying selflessness in every aspect of my life.
As a volunteer with the SHARE Food Network, I actively participated in distributing food to families in need. By working at food banks and participating in community outreach programs, I witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by individuals and families who lacked access to nutritious meals. This experience reinforced my commitment to selflessness and motivated me to take action. The gratitude and relief expressed by those who received the food packages reminded me of the power of collective action and the profound effect that embodying selflessness can have on individuals and communities.
Embodying selflessness is not only about the impact we make in the lives of others but also about the transformation it brings within ourselves. Through my involvement in various initiatives, I have witnessed the power of compassion, empathy, and unity. These experiences have shaped my character, strengthened my sense of responsibility towards others, and ignited a lifelong commitment to making a positive difference. By embracing selflessness, we can create a ripple effect of kindness and inspire others to join us on the journey of building a more compassionate and inclusive world.

Adversity is an inescapable aspect of life that tests our resilience and character. Throughout my life, I have encountered personal adversity that demanded courage, determination, and self-reflection. One of the most significant challenges I faced was coping with the loss of a loved one. The grieving process tested my emotional strength and resilience. However, through the support of family, friends, and counseling, I gradually emerged from the darkness and learned to cherish the memories of my loved one while embracing life's opportunities. Additionally, academic setbacks have been an obstacle in my path. There were times when I struggled with certain subjects or faced overwhelming academic pressure. Rather than succumbing to despair, I adopted a growth mindset and sought help from teachers, tutors, and classmates. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and seeking assistance when needed.
Overcoming adversity is not limited to personal struggles; it also extends to social and community challenges. I recognized the need to address issues affecting my community, such as homelessness and access to education. Witnessing the hardships faced by those less fortunate than me ignited a passion within me to make a difference. To tackle these challenges, I actively engaged with local organizations dedicated to combating homelessness. Volunteering at shelters and participating in fundraising events allowed me to contribute directly to the well-being of those in need. I collaborated with like-minded individuals to organize awareness campaigns and collect essential supplies for homeless individuals, aiming to restore their dignity and offer a helping hand. In terms of education, I became involved in mentoring programs that aimed to support underprivileged students. By sharing my knowledge and providing guidance, I helped empower young individuals, encouraging them to pursue their dreams despite the obstacles they may face. Witnessing their growth and resilience has been a source of immense fulfillment and reinforced my commitment to making a lasting impact on my community.
Looking ahead, my experiences have inspired me to pursue a career in social work or community development. I am eager to use my skills and knowledge to address systemic issues and promote social justice. By collaborating with local organizations, government bodies, and educational institutions, I hope to develop and implement initiatives that address poverty, inequality, and lack of access to resources. I aspire to establish mentorship programs that focus on empowering marginalized youth. Through these programs, I aim to provide guidance, academic support, and life skills training to help them overcome adversity and reach their full potential. I plan to leverage technology to amplify community impact. By harnessing digital platforms, I intend to create awareness campaigns, build online support networks, and facilitate access to educational resources for disadvantaged individuals.
Overcoming adversity has been a transformative journey, shaping my character and inspiring a deep commitment to helping others. Through my personal experiences and involvement in community initiatives, I have learned the importance of resilience, empathy, and collaboration. As I strive to make a positive impact in the future, I remain dedicated to empowering individuals, addressing social challenges, and fostering a more inclusive and compassionate society. I encourage others to join me in this endeavor, for together we can overcome adversity and create a brighter future for all.

Facing and overcoming obstacles is an integral part of personal growth and development. One significant challenge I encountered was my struggle with public speaking. The mere thought of speaking in front of an audience ignites overwhelming anxiety within me. This fear has hindered my ability to effectively communicate my ideas and limited my academic opportunities.
To confront this obstacle, I dedicated myself to overcoming my fear of public speaking. I enrolled in a public speaking course and actively sought opportunities to speak in front of others. Through persistent practice and gradual exposure, I gradually gained confidence and honed my speaking skills.
Overcoming this obstacle not only improved my ability to express myself effectively but also opened doors to various leadership roles and public engagement opportunities. Through this experience, I learned the value of perseverance, self-belief, and the importance of stepping outside of my comfort zone to achieve personal growth.

As parents, we all want our children to be successful, happy, and fulfilled in life. One of the best ways we can help them achieve these goals is by setting a good example ourselves. By focusing on self-improvement and determination, we can demonstrate to our children that anything is possible if we set our minds to it. Here are a few ways you can paint a good example for your future children through self-improvement and determination.
First, set personal goals and work hard to achieve them. Whether it's getting in shape, learning a new skill, or advancing in your career, having goals and working hard to achieve them can show your children that determination and hard work can pay off. Be sure to share your goals and progress with your children, so they can see the fruits of your labor and learn from your experience.
Second, take care of yourself both physically and mentally. Your children will learn a lot from how you take care of yourself. If you prioritize your health and well-being, your children will be more likely to do the same. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and getting regular exercise. Take time for yourself each day to meditate, practice mindfulness, or do something you enjoy. By taking care of yourself, you'll be better equipped to handle the challenges that come your way and be a more effective role model for your children.
Third, embrace failure and learn from it. Nobody is perfect, and we all make mistakes. It's important to show your children that it's okay to fail, and that failure is an opportunity to learn and grow. Share your failures and setbacks with your children, and talk about how you learned from them and used them to improve. By demonstrating that failure is a natural part of life and that it's possible to bounce back and succeed, you'll teach your children resilience and a growth mindset.
Fourth, prioritize education and lifelong learning. Learning doesn't stop when you finish school. It's important to continue learning and growing throughout your life and to show your children the value of education and lifelong learning. Whether it's taking a course, attending a workshop, or reading books on a subject you're interested in, make a habit of continuing your education. Encourage your children to do the same, and make learning a fun and engaging part of your family life.
Fifth, model positive habits and behaviors. Our children learn a lot from watching us, so it's important to model positive habits and behaviors. Whether it's being kind to others, staying organized, or managing your time effectively, make sure your children see you setting a good example. This can be especially important when it comes to technology use, social media, and other habits that can be addictive or harmful. By modeling positive behaviors, you'll help your children develop healthy habits and avoid negative influences.
Finally, be present and engaged in your children's lives. It's easy to get caught up in work, hobbies, and other distractions, but it's important to make time for your children and be present and engaged in their lives. Whether it's playing with them, helping them with homework, or just listening to their stories, make sure your children feel valued and loved. By prioritizing your relationship with your children, you'll be setting an example for them about the importance of family and relationships.

During my freshman year of high school, I faced a significant challenge that tested my mental and physical fortitude. I had always been an active kid, playing sports and running around outside, but high school presented new obstacles that I was not prepared for. With a full course load and new social pressures, I found myself struggling to find balance and manage my stress. Fortunately, I discovered running as a way to combat these challenges and transform myself into a stronger, more focused individual.
At the start of my freshman year, I was excited to begin this new chapter of my life. However, I quickly found myself overwhelmed by the amount of homework, tests, and projects I had to complete. As a result, I often found myself staying up late at night trying to finish everything, leaving little time for me to pursue my passions and relax. This caused me to feel constantly stressed and anxious, leading to poor sleep, irritability, and even depression. One day, a friend invited me to go for a run with her after school. At first, I was hesitant since I had never been much of a runner, but I decided to give it a try. As we began jogging around the track, I felt my body start to loosen up, and my mind cleared. I was so focused on my breathing and the rhythm of my steps that I forgot about all the stresses and worries that had been weighing me down. By the end of the run, I felt exhilarated, energized, and confident. I knew that I had discovered something special. From that day on, I committed to incorporating running into my daily routine. I started waking up earlier in the morning to go for a quick jog before school, and I would also run after finishing my homework in the evenings. At first, it was tough to get into the habit of running every day, but soon it became something that I looked forward to. I would feel a sense of accomplishment each time I completed a run, and it was a great way to clear my head and focus my thoughts.
One of the biggest challenges I faced when I started running was physical discomfort. My legs and lungs would burn, and I would feel like giving up after just a few minutes. However, I realized that this discomfort was temporary and that it was a necessary part of the process. As I continued to run, I gradually built up my endurance, and the discomfort became less intense. I started to feel more comfortable in my skin, and my confidence grew. I knew that I could push myself further than I ever thought possible. Running also taught me the importance of discipline and commitment. To become a better runner, I had to set goals for myself and work tirelessly to achieve them. I would challenge myself to run further, faster, or for a longer period, and I would track my progress to see how I was improving. This same discipline and commitment translated into other areas of my life, including academics and relationships.
Running has become an integral part of my life, and I cannot imagine living without it. It has given me a sense of purpose, discipline, and focus that has helped me overcome many of the challenges that I have faced. Whether I am running to clear my mind, improve my physical health, or simply enjoy the outdoors, running has always been a constant source of joy and inspiration for me.

Cheerleading is not just about jumping, stunting, and tumbling. It is a sport that requires strength, skill, and dedication. Cheerleading is more than just a hobby for me; it is a passion that has played an important role in my life. Being a cheerleader has taught me valuable life skills that I will carry with me forever.
I am passionate about cheerleading because it has given me a sense of belonging and community. Joining the cheerleading team allowed me to make friends with people who share the same passion and love for the sport. We practice together, support each other, and work towards a common goal, which is to represent our school and perform to the best of our abilities. The bond that we share as a team is unbreakable, and it is something that I treasure deeply.
Cheerleading has also taught me about the importance of hard work and dedication. Being a cheerleader requires hours of practice and training to perfect our routines. It requires physical and mental endurance to perform at a high level. Cheerleading has taught me to push myself beyond my limits and to strive for excellence. This work ethic has translated into other areas of my life, such as academics and personal goals.
Another important lesson that cheerleading has taught me is the importance of teamwork. Cheerleading is not an individual sport; it requires cooperation and coordination between teammates. We have to trust each other and work together to achieve our goals. Learning to work as a team has taught me the importance of communication, respect, and compromise. These skills have helped me in other aspects of my life, such as group projects and team sports.
Cheerleading has also taught me about perseverance and resilience. Cheerleading can be physically and mentally challenging, and there are times when we may feel like giving up. However, through hard work and determination, we learn to overcome these challenges and become stronger. Cheerleading has taught me that failure is not the end; it is an opportunity to learn and improve. These lessons have helped me to overcome obstacles in my personal life and to approach challenges with a positive attitude.
Moreover, cheerleading has taught me about leadership and responsibility. As a cheerleader, I have a responsibility to represent my school and my team with pride and integrity. I have learned to lead by example, to encourage and support my teammates, and to take responsibility for my actions. These leadership skills have helped me to become a better person and to make a positive impact in my community.
Cheerleading has had a significant impact on my life, imparting vital life skills that will stay with me forever. Through cheerleading, I have learned about the significance of community, dedication, collaboration, determination, fortitude, and leadership. Cheerleading has given me a strong sense of belonging, ignited a passion for the sport, and forged a bond with my teammates that I hold dear. I am appreciative of the invaluable lessons that cheerleading has taught me, and I intend to employ these lessons in both my personal and professional life.

I find inspiration in many different technologies that are making the world a better place. However, one technology that stands out to me is renewable energy. The use of renewable energy has the potential to revolutionize the way we power our societies, and help to mitigate the harmful effects of climate change.
Renewable energy is energy that comes from naturally replenishing resources, such as sunlight, wind, rain, and geothermal heat. Unlike traditional fossil fuels, which are finite resources and emit greenhouse gases when burned, renewable energy sources do not produce harmful emissions and can provide a clean and sustainable source of energy. Solar energy is one of the most promising forms of renewable energy. Solar panels are becoming increasingly efficient and cost-effective, and can be used to power homes, businesses, and even entire cities. In fact, some countries are already making great strides towards a 100% renewable energy future.
The use of renewable energy has many benefits. First and foremost, it is clean and sustainable. By reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, we can help to mitigate the harmful effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels, increased frequency and intensity of natural disasters, and the displacement of millions of people around the world. Renewable energy also has the potential to create new jobs and stimulate economic growth. According to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the renewable energy sector could create up to 28 million jobs globally by 2050. Furthermore, renewable energy can improve access to electricity in developing countries. Currently, over one billion people around the world lack access to electricity, which limits their ability to access education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Solar panels and other forms of renewable energy can be used to provide clean and reliable electricity to these communities, improving their quality of life and helping to lift them out of poverty.
Of course, there are challenges to implementing renewable energy on a large scale. The technology is still relatively new, and there are concerns about its reliability and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional fossil fuels. However, as the technology continues to improve and the cost of renewable energy continues to decrease, it is becoming increasingly clear that a 100% renewable energy future is both possible and necessary.

In addition to these practical applications, STEAM can also foster a love of learning and curiosity. By approaching education through a multidisciplinary lens, we can provide students with a more comprehensive understanding of the world around them. This approach can help cultivate a lifelong love of learning and inspire the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.
As a psychology student, I believe that my education will equip me with the tools and knowledge necessary to make a meaningful impact on the world. My goal is to use my education to help improve the mental health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. One way I hope to make an impact is by becoming a mental health advocate. Mental health issues affect millions of people worldwide, and unfortunately, many still suffer in silence due to stigma and lack of access to resources. Through my education, I hope to gain a deep understanding of the complexities of mental health and use this knowledge to promote awareness and understanding of mental health issues. I also hope to use my knowledge to advocate for policies that support mental health and increase access to resources.
Another way I hope to make an impact is by becoming a counselor or therapist. By providing counseling and therapy services, I can help individuals who are struggling with mental health issues to navigate their challenges and work toward healing and recovery. Through my education, I hope to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to provide effective counseling services that are grounded in evidence-based practices. Additionally, I hope to use my education to conduct research that contributes to our understanding of mental health and informs the development of effective treatments and interventions. By conducting research, I can contribute to the knowledge base of the field and help identify new strategies for improving mental health outcomes.
I hope to use my education to educate others about mental health and the importance of prioritizing one's mental well-being. By sharing my knowledge and expertise, I can help to destigmatize mental health issues and encourage individuals to seek out the help and resources they need. The integration of psychology into STEAM education can enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Psychology principles can also inform the development of innovative technology and engineering solutions, while artistic expression can facilitate emotional regulation and promote mental well-being. By combining STEAM and psychology, we can create a more holistic approach to education and innovation, one that values not only technological advancement but also human flourishing.

My name is Kendall Rowe and I am a student in the Science and Technology Program at Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Springdale, Maryland. I have chosen to study Psychology at Hampton University to fulfill a lifelong dream of working in the healthcare profession as a Developmental Psychologist. My career choice is driven by my deep curiosity about how individuals develop physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally over time. I am intrigued by the complex interplay of biological, environmental, and cultural factors that shape human development. My interest in developmental psychology stems from personal experiences I've had with my cousin, who has a developmental disorder. Watching my cousin navigate the challenges of her disorder sparked a fascination with how individuals develop and overcome obstacles throughout their lives. I am passionate about helping individuals with developmental disorders and improving their quality of life. This has led me to pursue a career in developmental psychology, where I hope to contribute to our understanding of human development and help individuals and families facing similar challenges. My goal as a developmental psychologist is to improve the lives of children and families by (1) identifying and addressing developmental challenges, (2) providing guidance on effective parenting practices, (3) enhancing educational opportunities, (4) promoting mental health and well-being, (5) conducting research on child development, and (6) advocating for children's rights.
Choosing to pursue a career in Developmental Psychology provides me with the unique opportunity to directly engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds and age groups, while also making a meaningful impact on their overall health and well-being. I am deeply passionate about helping others, which is evidenced by my participation in various extracurricular activities, academic achievements, and community service endeavors. My natural tendencies towards empathy and compassion, combined with my exceptional social and active listening skills, position me to truly hear and address the needs of others. As a Developmental Psychologist, I will be committed to addressing the significant lack of quality healthcare and support that exists in underprivileged and minority communities. My ultimate goal is to ensure that every individual has access to high-quality medical care, regardless of their socioeconomic status or background.
As a developmental psychologist, I intend to study the various stages of child development, from infancy through adolescence, and provide insights into how children develop physically, emotionally, and socially; helping parents, educators, and other professionals understand children's needs and provide appropriate support. I aim to identify developmental delays or disorders early on, which can help children receive early interventions and support to address these challenges. I am eager to help parents understand their child's development and provide guidance on effective parenting practices, including strategies for promoting positive behaviors, addressing challenging behaviors, and promoting healthy attachment and relationships. Above all, I intend to help children and families cope with the challenges of life, such as trauma, stress, and mental health disorders and provide counseling and support to help children build resilience and develop healthy coping strategies.
As a developmental psychologist, I will aim to make a positive impact on the world by utilizing my expertise and knowledge. I plan to contribute towards improving the lives of individuals and families, advancing our understanding of human development, enhancing educational opportunities, addressing social issues, and promoting mental health and well-being. I am hopeful that through my work, I can help children and families reach their full potential and lead healthy, happy lives.
Camryn Dwyer Foster Youth Scholarship
Growing up, I had several friends who were in foster care, and their experiences had a significant impact on me. As I watched them navigate through the foster care system and deal with the challenges that came with it, I realized just how complex and overwhelming this system could be. This indirect experience in foster care helped shape my outlook on life and my career goals as a developmental psychologist.
As a child, I never fully understood the intricacies of the foster care system, but I did see how it affected my friends. Some of them struggled with the transition to new homes, while others struggled with feelings of abandonment and uncertainty. I remember feeling confused and sad that they had to go through these experiences. However, as I grew older, I began to realize just how important it was to support children and families who were involved in foster care.
As I entered high school, registered for dual enrollment classes and began studying psychology, I became particularly interested in developmental psychology. I wanted to better understand how early childhood experiences, such as those in foster care, could impact a child's development and future outcomes. I also became interested in the ways that caregivers and social workers could support children who had experienced trauma and adversity. My interest in foster care also led me to volunteer with several organizations that support children in the system. I worked with a local non-profit to provide tutoring and mentoring services to foster children, and I also volunteered with a program that provided support to families who were in the process of adopting children from foster care. Through these experiences, I saw firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate the foster care system, but I also saw the incredible resilience and strength of the children and families involved. As I move forward in my career as a developmental psychologist, my experiences with foster care will continue to shape my outlook and goals. I believe that it is essential to address the unique needs of children in foster care and to support the caregivers and social workers who work with them. My goal is to use my knowledge and skills to advocate for policies and programs that improve outcomes for children in foster care.
One area of particular interest to me is the use of trauma-informed care in foster care settings. Trauma-informed care recognizes the pervasive impact of trauma on children's lives and seeks to create safe and supportive environments that promote healing and growth. I believe that this approach could be especially beneficial for children in foster care, who may have experienced multiple traumas and need specialized support. Another area of interest to me is the role of foster parents in supporting children's development. Foster parents play a critical role in providing stability and support for children in the system, and they often face unique challenges in meeting children's needs. I am interested in researching effective training and support programs for foster parents, as well as strategies for building positive relationships between foster parents and birth parents.
Ultimately, my experiences with foster care have taught me the importance of empathy, compassion, and resilience. They have shown me that every child deserves to feel safe, loved, and supported, regardless of their background or circumstances. As a developmental psychologist, I hope to use my skills and knowledge to promote positive outcomes for children in foster care and to create a more equitable and just system for all families.

My high school years were filled with indirect experiences of gun violence. Growing up in a community where shootings were commonplace, I often felt a sense of fear and uncertainty whenever I heard the sound of gunshots in the distance. I remember one instance where a student brought a gun to school, and it sent the entire school into a state of panic. The feeling of vulnerability stayed with me long after the incident was over, and it was then that I realized that gun violence is a real and present danger that affects all of us, regardless of age, race, or socioeconomic status.
As I embark on my psychology degree, I plan to bring awareness to gun violence through education and advocacy. One of the ways I plan to do this is by using my platform as a psychology student to start conversations about the effects of gun violence on mental health. I want to educate people on the emotional toll that gun violence can have on individuals and communities, and the importance of seeking help when dealing with trauma related to gun violence. By partnering with local organizations and community groups, I hope to create safe spaces for people to share their stories and experiences related to gun violence.
After I graduate from college as a developmental psychologist, I plan to continue my work in bringing awareness to gun violence by researching the long-term effects of gun violence on children's development. I believe that by understanding the psychological and social impacts of gun violence on children, we can better support them and help them overcome the trauma they have experienced. I hope that my research will provide a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding gun violence and contribute to the development of evidence-based interventions to prevent gun violence and support those who have been affected by it.
In addition to my academic work, I have also been involved in community service projects that focus on supporting underserved communities. One of the organizations I have worked with is the SHARED food network, where I have helped distribute food to low-income families in my community. I have also volunteered at a women's and children's shelter, where I helped package coats for families in need during the winter months. These experiences have taught me the importance of being involved in my community and the impact that small acts of kindness can have on the lives of those around me.
As a peer-to-peer coach with a program that supports underserved black communities, I have had the opportunity to work with young people and help them navigate the challenges they face in their daily lives. Many of the students I have worked with have experienced gun violence firsthand, either through personal experiences or through the experiences of family members and friends. Through my work as a coach, I have seen firsthand the resilience and strength of these young people, and I am inspired by their ability to overcome adversity.
My exposure to gun violence during my high school years has ignited my passion for raising awareness on this critical issue. With my upcoming pursuit of a psychology degree, I plan to leverage my education to advocate for change. By collaborating with community organizations and conducting research on the long-term implications of gun violence, we can take a collective approach to prevent gun violence and offer support to those impacted by it.

Growing up as a 17-year-old African American female in a single parent home, I learned the value of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Despite the challenges and obstacles that I have faced, I have always had a passion for art. My love for art started at a young age, where I would spend hours upon hours drawing and painting, always eager to learn new techniques and experiment with different mediums. As I grew older, I realized that my passion for art was more than just a hobby, but rather a calling that I needed to pursue. That is why I chose to pursue a degree in the arts at Hampton University. I knew that attending Hampton University would provide me with the education and training I need to pursue my passion and turn my dreams into a reality. Not only does Hampton University have an exceptional arts program, but it is also a historically black university, which was important to me as an African American female.
I am particularly drawn to digital art. Digital art provides me with the freedom to express my creativity in a way that traditional art cannot. With digital art, I can manipulate and experiment with different elements, colors, and textures to create a unique piece that is truly my own. I love the idea of being able to create something that is both visually stunning and meaningful to others. Through digital art, I can share my perspective on the world, my experiences, and my culture with others. My passion for digital art has led me to explore different mediums, including graphic design, illustration, and animation. I believe that each medium has its own unique qualities that allow me to tell a story in a different way. For example, with graphic design, I can create visually appealing designs for products, advertising, and branding. Illustration allows me to create characters and scenes that tell a story, while animation brings those characters and scenes to life.
As I look towards the future, I plan to continue to explore and create in the digital art space. I want to use my skills to create art that inspires and uplifts others, especially those from underrepresented communities. I believe that art has the power to bring people together, to bridge differences, and to create change. As an African American female, I want to use my art to tell stories that reflect my experiences and culture, and to create a dialogue about important issues. One of the areas I am particularly interested in exploring is Afrofuturism. Afrofuturism is a movement that explores the intersection of African culture, technology, and the future. It is a way to reimagine what the future can look like, with Black people at the forefront. As a digital artist, I believe that I can use this movement to create art that inspires others to think about the future in a different way. I want to create images of Black people in positions of power and leadership, in a world where they are not held back by systemic racism or discrimination.
Another area that I am interested in exploring is the intersection of technology and social justice. Technology has the power to create change, but it can also perpetuate existing inequalities. As a digital artist, I want to use my skills to create art that raises awareness about important issues, such as police brutality, racial profiling, and mass incarceration. I believe that art can be a powerful tool for activism and social change, and I want to use my skills to create art that inspires others to take action.

The person I admire the most is my mother. She has always been my role model and source of inspiration. From a young age, she instilled in me the value of education and the importance of pursuing one's dreams. Her unwavering dedication to her own education and her tireless work ethic have motivated me to pursue further education and to participate in speech and debate.
Growing up, my mother worked tirelessly to provide for our family. Despite working long hours, she always made time to help me with my schoolwork and encourage me to pursue my interests. She herself had not had the opportunity to attend college, but she recognized the value of education and made sure that I had the resources and support I needed to excel academically. As I entered high school, my mother's example of hard work and determination continued to inspire me. She encouraged me to set high goals for myself and to work tirelessly to achieve them. I know that I wanted to attend college and pursue a career in a field that would allow me to make a difference in the world. My mother supports me every step of the way and encourages me to take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way.
One of the opportunities that I was particularly excited about was speech and debate. I had always loved public speaking and the idea of being able to compete against other students in a forum that celebrated academic achievement was incredibly appealing to me. However, I was initially hesitant to participate in speech and debate because I was worried that I wouldn't be good enough. My mother was the one who encouraged me to take the leap and give it a try. Through speech and debate, I discovered a newfound passion for public speaking and debate. I loved the challenge of crafting persuasive arguments and delivering them in a way that would captivate an audience. I was inspired by the other students on my team who were just as dedicated and passionate as I was. Together, we worked tirelessly to hone our skills and compete at the highest level.
My mother's unwavering support and encouragement is what keeps me going during the toughest moments of speech and debate. When I am exhausted from long hours of research and practice, she reminds me of the importance of pursuing my passions and striving for excellence. When I face setbacks and failures, she reminds me that every failure was an opportunity to learn and grow. It is my mother's example of hard work and determination that inspires me to pursue further education. After graduating from high school, I plan to enroll in Hampton University and pursue a degree in psychology. I work tirelessly to excel academically, and I hope to be able to secure internships and other opportunities that will allow me to gain real-world experience in my chosen field.
My mother continues to be a source of inspiration and support. She checks on me regularly on my progress and offers words of encouragement when I am feeling discouraged. My mother's example of hard work and determination inspired me to pursue my dreams and to never give up. Through her example, I learned the value of education and the importance of pursuing one's passions. I also learned the importance of perseverance and grit, even in the face of setbacks and failures.
Students Impacted by Incarceration Scholarship
Incarceration is a life-changing experience that can have a profound impact on a person's life, both in the short and long term. For some, it can be a wake-up call, a chance to reflect on past mistakes, and an opportunity to turn their lives around. For others, it can be a traumatic experience that further entrenches them in a life of crime and despair. For me, incarceration was a pivotal moment in my life that taught me many valuable lessons and helped shape my academic and career ambitions. Although I have never been incarcerated personally, I have had close family members and friends who have gone through the experience, and their stories have had a profound impact on me.
The first lesson I learned from their experiences is that the criminal justice system is far from perfect. Despite the stated goal of rehabilitating offenders and reducing crime, the reality is that many prisons are overcrowded, understaffed, and ill-equipped to provide the kind of support and treatment that inmates need to overcome their challenges and reintegrate into society. Instead, many inmates are left to fend for themselves, facing isolation, abuse, and neglect, which only exacerbate their problems and increase the likelihood of recidivism. This made me realize the importance of advocacy and activism in promoting social justice and fighting against systemic inequalities and injustices in our society.
The second lesson I learned from their experiences is the power of education and personal growth in transforming lives. Many inmates who take advantage of educational and vocational programs while incarcerated have a better chance of finding employment and rebuilding their lives once they are released. Moreover, education can be a powerful tool for personal growth and self-reflection, enabling inmates to better understand the underlying causes of their behavior and develop new skills and coping mechanisms that can help them avoid falling back into old patterns of behavior. This made me appreciate the importance of education and lifelong learning in promoting personal growth and achieving one's goals in life.
These lessons have had a profound impact on my academic and career ambitions, as I have developed a strong interest in developmental psychology and the study of human behavior, particularly in the context of social and environmental factors that shape our lives. My goal is to become a developmental psychologist and work with at-risk youth and young adults who are at risk of getting caught up in the criminal justice system, helping them to better understand the underlying causes of their behavior and providing them with the tools and resources they need to overcome their challenges and succeed in life. Through my work, I hope to promote a greater understanding of the complex factors that contribute to criminal behavior and to advocate for policies and programs that focus on prevention and rehabilitation, rather than punishment and retribution.
Dylan's Journey Memorial Scholarship
As someone who has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), my academic journey has been far from easy. Growing up, I struggled with staying focused in class, completing assignments on time, and managing my time effectively. I often felt overwhelmed and frustrated, which led to feelings of anxiety and low self-esteem. However, despite these challenges, I never let my ADHD define me, and I refused to let it hold me back from pursuing my dreams.
My motivation for pursuing higher education stems from my desire to make a difference in the world. I have always been passionate about social justice issues, and I believe that education is the key to creating positive change. I want to use my education to advocate for marginalized communities and to promote equity and inclusion in all aspects of society. However, as someone with ADHD, I know that achieving academic success requires extra effort and dedication.
Throughout my academic journey, I have developed strategies for managing my ADHD symptoms and staying focused on my goals. I have learned that I work best when I break tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, and when I give myself frequent breaks to avoid burnout. I have also learned that I am most productive when I am in a quiet, distraction-free environment, so I often study in the library or at home where I can control my surroundings. These strategies have helped me to overcome many of the challenges that come with having ADHD, and I believe that they will continue to serve me well as I pursue higher education.
I believe that I am a good candidate for this scholarship for several reasons. I am deeply committed to my academic and professional goals, and I am willing to put in the extra effort required to succeed as a student with ADHD. I have a strong work ethic, and I am not afraid to ask for help when I need it. I have a track record of academic achievement despite the challenges posed by my ADHD. I have consistently earned high grades and have been recognized for my academic accomplishments by my professors and peers. In addition, I am passionate about using my education to create positive change in the world, and I believe that this scholarship would help me to achieve my goals by providing me with the financial support I need to pursue my studies.
I recognize that there are many other qualified candidates for this scholarship, but I believe that my experience with ADHD and my dedication to my academic and professional goals set me apart. My experience with ADHD has taught me valuable skills such as time management, perseverance, and adaptability, which I believe will serve me well as I pursue higher education and beyond. I am confident that with the help of this scholarship, I will be able to achieve my academic and professional goals and make a positive impact on the world.
ALS Family Scholarship
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neurological disorder that has had a significant impact on my life. My cousin was diagnosed with ALS when I was just 10 years old, and watching her gradual decline and eventual passing from the disease was one of the most difficult experiences of my life. However, it also inspired me to pursue a career in developmental psychology, with a particular focus on the impact of chronic illness on families and children. This scholarship would be a crucial step in achieving my goals and making a difference in the lives of those affected by ALS.
My cousin's diagnosis of ALS came as a shock to our family. She was a vibrant and active woman who loved to travel, socialize with friends, and spend time with her family. However, over a few months, we began to notice changes in her physical abilities. She started having trouble with fine motor skills, such as buttoning her shirt or tying her shoes. She became increasingly fatigued and had difficulty with basic tasks such as walking and getting up from a chair. Eventually, she was diagnosed with ALS, and we learned that the disease would progressively rob her of her physical abilities until she was unable to move or communicate.
As a family, we rallied around my cousin and did everything we could to support her. We helped her with daily tasks, such as dressing and bathing, and we spent countless hours with her, talking, watching TV, and playing games. We also did our best to keep her spirits up, sharing jokes and stories, and creating happy memories whenever possible. However, despite our efforts, my cousin's condition continued to deteriorate, and she eventually passed away.
Through this experience, I learned firsthand how devastating chronic illness can be for families. It not only affects the person who is sick but also their loved ones, who must often become caregivers and make significant sacrifices in their own lives. As I reflected on my cousin's illness and the impact it had on our family, I became increasingly interested in studying the psychological effects of chronic illness on families and children.
I decided to pursue a degree in developmental psychology, with a particular focus on the impact of chronic illness on families. I have studied topics such as stress and coping in families dealing with chronic illness, the impact of chronic illness on child development, and the challenges faced by caregivers of chronically ill family members. I am passionate about using my knowledge and skills to help families cope with the challenges of chronic illness and to improve their quality of life.
However, pursuing a career in developmental psychology is not easy. It requires a significant investment of time, effort, and money. College is expensive, and the cost of tuition and living expenses can be a barrier to many students. This scholarship would be a crucial step in helping me achieve my goals. It would allow me to focus on my studies and research without the added burden of worrying about finances. It would also allow me to attend conferences and workshops, which would help me stay up-to-date on the latest research in my field and make important connections with other professionals. I am grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship, and I am committed to using my knowledge and skills to make a positive impact on the world.

Cancer is a disease that has affected the lives of millions of people worldwide, either directly or indirectly. It has the power to change an individual's life trajectory, relationships, and beliefs. In this essay, I will reflect on how my experience with cancer has impacted my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations.
My experience with cancer is indirect. My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was a toddler, and it had a significant impact on our family. As a toddler, I was not mature enough to understand the gravity of the situation. However, as I grew older and learned more about the disease, I began to realize the emotional, physical, and financial toll it had on my family.
Cancer has altered my beliefs in several ways. It has made me realize the importance of taking care of my health. Cancer can strike anyone, and it does not discriminate based on age, gender, or socioeconomic status. Therefore, it is essential to adopt a healthy lifestyle by eating well, exercising regularly, and getting regular health checkups. Cancer has shown me the value of time. Cancer can take away a person's life in a matter of months or years. It has made me more mindful of how I spend my time and who I spend it with. It has taught me the importance of hope. My aunt's journey with cancer was not easy, but her positive attitude and hopeful outlook on life gave our family the strength to endure.
Cancer has also impacted my relationships. My aunt's cancer diagnosis brought our family closer together. We rallied around her, offering support and encouragement. It was a challenging time, but it brought us together in a way that we had not experienced before. The experience taught me the importance of family and friends during difficult times. It also taught me the value of communication. Cancer can be a taboo topic, and people often shy away from discussing it. However, open and honest communication can help individuals cope with the diagnosis and the emotional toll that comes with it.
My experience with cancer has influenced my career aspirations. It has inspired me to pursue a healthcare career. I want to work in a field where I can make a positive impact on people's lives. Cancer has also shown me the importance of research and innovation in healthcare. Research has led to breakthrough treatments and therapies that have extended the lives of cancer patients. I want to be a part of this progress by contributing to research and development efforts.
My indirect experience with cancer has impacted my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. It has made me more mindful of my health, the value of time, and the importance of hope. It has brought my family closer together and taught me the importance of communication during difficult times. It has also inspired me to pursue a healthcare career where I can make a positive impact on people's lives and contribute to research and innovation efforts. Cancer is a devastating disease, but it has the power to change lives and inspire individuals to make a difference.
Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
Taylor Swift's 1989 album marked a turning point in her career as she made the transition from country to pop music. The album was a breakthrough success that solidified Taylor's place in the music industry. The album included a string of hits such as "Shake It Off," "Blank Space," and "Bad Blood." However, my favorite song on the album is "Wildest Dreams." It is a standout track on the album, distinguished by its dreamy, haunting melody, and evocative lyrics. The song tells the story of a fleeting romance that is full of passion but ultimately doomed to end. Taylor's soft and airy vocals convey a sense of longing and nostalgia that builds with the addition of drums and guitar. The chorus is particularly powerful, with vivid and romantic imagery that captures the bittersweet nature of a love affair that can't last. "Wildest Dreams" showcases Swift's versatility as an artist, and her ability to create music that resonates with audiences across genres.
"Wildest Dreams" is a dreamy ballad that transports listeners to another world. The song opens with a haunting melody that sets the tone for the rest of the track. Taylor's vocals are soft and airy, conveying a sense of longing and nostalgia. As the song progresses, the instrumentation builds, with the addition of drums and guitar, but the focus remains on Taylor's voice and the lyrics. The lyrics of "Wildest Dreams" are what make it such a captivating song. The track tells the story of a fleeting romance, one that is full of passion but ultimately doomed to end. Taylor sings, "He's so tall and handsome as hell / He's so bad but he does it so well / I can see the end as it begins / My one condition is / Say you'll remember me." The chorus of "Wildest Dreams" is particularly powerful. Taylor sings, "Say you'll remember me / Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset, babe / Red lips and rosy cheeks / Say you'll see me again even if it's just in your wildest dreams." The imagery in this section of the song is vivid and romantic. It's easy to picture Taylor standing in a flowing dress, watching the sun go down, and yearning for the memory of her lover to remain with him.
There are several reasons why "Wildest Dreams" is my favorite song on the '1989' album. The songwriting is superb. Taylor has always been an excellent songwriter, and "Wildest Dreams" showcases her skills beautifully. Taylor Swift's "Wildest Dreams" is a stunning composition that exhibits her exceptional abilities as a songwriter, singer, and producer. It is a standout piece in her album, which is packed with hits, and it's no surprise that it's adored by her fans. The song effortlessly captures the enchantment and sorrow of a short-lived romantic relationship, presented gracefully and elegantly. It's a testament to Taylor's musical prowess and her ability to create songs that strike a chord with her listeners.
Dashanna K. McNeil Memorial Scholarship
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the vital role healthcare professionals play in society. It has also brought to the forefront the importance of pediatric healthcare professionals. As someone who has been deeply impacted by this pandemic, I have realized my passion for becoming a pediatric nurse and I want to share with you, my motivations for pursuing this career path.
First and foremost, my desire to become a pediatric nurse stems from my love for children. I have always been drawn to their innocence, energy, and resilience. As a pediatric nurse, I will have the opportunity to work with children and their families during some of the most critical moments in their lives. Whether it's providing routine care, administering medications, or comforting a scared child, I believe that my skills and personality will make a positive impact on the lives of children and their families. Furthermore, the pandemic has highlighted the need for skilled and compassionate healthcare professionals, especially in pediatric care. The pandemic has disproportionately affected vulnerable populations, including children with underlying medical conditions. As a pediatric nurse, I would be able to provide these children with the specialized care they need during these trying times. Additionally, I believe that pediatric nursing offers unique challenges and opportunities for growth. Children often require special attention and care, and as a nurse, I would be responsible for their well-being. Pediatric nursing involves caring for patients with a wide range of medical conditions, from minor injuries to chronic illnesses. This diversity would provide me with the opportunity to learn and grow as a nurse, gaining valuable experience that would prepare me for any challenge.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also shown the importance of adaptability in the healthcare profession. Healthcare professionals have had to quickly adapt to new protocols and procedures to provide care while keeping themselves and their patients safe. As a pediatric nurse, I would need to be flexible and adapt to the ever-changing needs of my patients, especially during times of crisis. I believe that my experience and personality make me well-suited for this type of work.
In addition to my love for children and the unique challenges of pediatric nursing, I am also drawn to the field because of the impact that nurses can make on the lives of their patients. Nurses are often the first point of contact for patients and their families, providing comfort, support, and guidance throughout their care. I want to be a part of this important role, providing compassionate care to children and their families during their time of need.
As someone who has experienced the pandemic firsthand, I am inspired by the dedication and sacrifice of healthcare professionals. The pandemic has underscored the importance of healthcare workers and the critical role they play in society. I want to be a part of this community of selfless individuals, making a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
The COVID-19 pandemic has reaffirmed my desire to become a pediatric nurse. My passion for working with children, the unique challenges and opportunities for growth in pediatric nursing, the impact nurses can have on their patients, and the dedication and sacrifice of healthcare professionals all motivate me to pursue this career path. I am excited to begin this journey and make a positive impact on the lives of children and their families.

Civil engineering is a field that I have been passionate about since I was a child. The idea of designing and building infrastructure that can benefit communities, solve problems, and make people's lives easier is what drives my passion for civil engineering. This field has a significant impact on the quality of life for individuals, families, and entire communities, and it is a great honor to be able to contribute to it.
One of the reasons I am passionate about civil engineering is the opportunity to make a positive impact on my community. There are several issues that I am concerned about and would like to address as a civil engineer. One of these issues is the lack of accessible infrastructure for people with disabilities. There are still many areas in my community that are not easily accessible for people with mobility challenges. As a civil engineer, I want to be able to design infrastructure that is accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical abilities. This includes sidewalks, public buildings, and parks that are all accessible to individuals with disabilities. I believe that it is important for everyone to have access to these amenities and to feel included in their community.
Another issue that I would like to address is the need for sustainable infrastructure. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing our planet, and we need to take action to address it. As a civil engineer, I believe that it is my responsibility to design infrastructure that is sustainable and environmentally friendly. This includes using renewable energy sources, reducing waste, and designing infrastructure that can withstand the impacts of climate change. I believe that by designing sustainable infrastructure, we can not only reduce our carbon footprint but also help to create a more resilient and sustainable future.
In addition to these issues, I am also passionate about improving transportation infrastructure. In my community, there are still many areas that do not have adequate public transportation, and this can be a significant barrier to people who do not have access to a car. As a civil engineer, I want to be able to design transportation infrastructure that is efficient, safe, and accessible to everyone. This includes not only public transportation but also bike lanes, pedestrian walkways, and other forms of alternative transportation.
To address these issues, I believe that I can contribute in several ways as a civil engineer. First, I can work with local governments and community organizations to identify areas that need improvement and develop plans to address them. This may involve conducting studies, analyzing data, and working with stakeholders to develop solutions that meet their needs. I can also work with other engineers and architects to design infrastructure that is accessible, sustainable, and efficient. This may involve using new technologies, materials, and techniques to create innovative solutions that address these issues.
Furthermore, I can also work to educate the public about the importance of these issues and the role that civil engineers play in addressing them. This may involve giving presentations, participating in community events, and using social media to raise awareness about these issues. By educating the public about the importance of sustainable infrastructure, accessible infrastructure, and efficient transportation, we can create a groundswell of support for these issues and encourage policymakers to take action.

Youth violence is a complex and pressing issue that affects communities all around the world. From bullying to gang violence, youth violence has devastating consequences that can last a lifetime. As someone passionate about creating positive change, I have thought about how I can make a difference regarding youth violence. In this essay, I will share my ideas on how I plan on making a difference and contributing to reducing youth violence.
The first step in making a difference regarding youth violence is education. It is essential to educate young people about the consequences of violent behavior and teach them conflict-resolution skills. This can be done through school programs, community workshops, and mentorship programs. As a volunteer, I plan on working with local organizations to provide education on the dangers of youth violence and provide young people with the necessary skills to resolve conflicts peacefully.
The second step is to create a safe and supportive environment for young people. Many young people who become involved in violence come from difficult and unstable environments. By providing a safe and supportive environment, we can prevent youth violence from occurring in the first place. As a volunteer, I plan on working with organizations that provide after-school programs, mentorship programs, and safe spaces for young people to gather and socialize. These programs can provide young people with positive role models and a sense of community, which can reduce their likelihood of engaging in violent behavior.
The third step is to advocate for policies and legislation that address youth violence. This can include policies that promote gun control, mental health services, and funding for violence prevention programs. As a citizen, I plan on contacting my local representatives to express my concerns about youth violence and advocate for policies that address the issue. Additionally, I plan on volunteering with organizations that advocate for policies and legislation that support violence prevention.
The fourth step is to address the root causes of youth violence. Many young people who become involved in violence come from low-income households, have experienced trauma or abuse, or suffer from mental health issues. By addressing these root causes, we can prevent young people from turning to violence as a coping mechanism. As a volunteer, I plan on working with organizations that provide support and resources to families and young people who are experiencing these challenges. This can include programs that provide mental health services, job training, and financial assistance.
The fifth step is to provide opportunities for young people to become involved in positive activities. Many young people who become involved in violence do so because they feel bored or have nothing to do. By providing opportunities for young people to become involved in positive activities such as sports, arts, or community service, we can prevent them from turning to violence. As a volunteer, I plan on working with organizations that provide these opportunities for young people. This can include coaching a youth sports team or organizing a community service project.
Reducing youth violence requires a comprehensive approach that involves education, creating a safe and supportive environment, advocating for policies and legislation, addressing the root causes, and providing opportunities for young people to become involved in positive activities. As a volunteer and a citizen, I plan on contributing to these efforts by working with local organizations and advocating for policies that support violence prevention. By working together, we can create a safer and more supportive environment for young people, and prevent youth violence from impacting our communities.
Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
As a young adult, my experiences with finances have been a mixed bag. Growing up, my family was not particularly wealthy, and my parents struggled to make ends meet. I learned a lot about the value of hard work and the importance of saving money, but I didn't receive any formal financial education. When I got my first job, I was excited to have a source of income and some spending money, but I quickly realized that I didn't know how to manage my finances effectively.
At first, I was thrilled to have a steady paycheck coming in, and I spent my money on all sorts of things that I thought I needed or wanted. I didn't think much about saving or investing, and I certainly didn't have a budget or any sort of financial plan. As a result, I found myself struggling to make ends meet towards the end of each month, and I often had to rely on credit cards or loans to get by.
Over time, I realized that I needed to take control of my finances if I wanted to achieve my long-term goals. I started reading books and articles about personal finance, and I began tracking my income and expenses in a budgeting app. One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the importance of creating a plan and sticking to it. By setting clear financial goals for myself, such as paying off debt or saving for a down payment on a house, I was able to stay focused and motivated. I also started to think more strategically about my spending, prioritizing my needs over my wants and being more mindful about my purchases.
Another key lesson I learned was the importance of building an emergency fund. Having a few months' worth of expenses saved up in case of an unexpected financial setback can provide a great deal of peace of mind and help to prevent debt from piling up. I made it a priority to save up an emergency fund, and it has saved me from a lot of stress and worry over the years. Now that I have a better understanding of personal finance, I feel much more confident about my financial future. I know that there will be challenges and setbacks along the way, but I also know that I have the knowledge and tools to overcome them. In the future, I plan to continue learning about investing and other financial topics so that I can build long-term wealth and security for myself and my family.
Looking back on my experiences with finances, I realize that I was lucky to have stumbled upon financial education on my own. Many people don't have access to these resources, and they struggle to make ends meet as a result. That's why I believe that financial education should be a core component of our educational system. By teaching young people about the basics of personal finance, we can empower them to make smart financial decisions and avoid the mistakes that so many of us have made. My personal experiences with finances have taught me a great deal about the importance of financial education and planning. By taking control of my finances and learning how to manage them effectively, I have been able to achieve my goals and build a more secure financial future for myself. I believe that everyone should have access to the tools and resources they need to manage their finances effectively, and I hope to use my own experiences to help others achieve financial success.

One of the most significant problems in many urban areas is the shortage of affordable housing. With rising housing prices and limited space, many people struggle to find a suitable and affordable place to live. To address this issue, I propose the creation of a housing development company that would focus on providing affordable, sustainable, and innovative housing solutions.
The first step would be to acquire suitable land for the housing development. The land should be large enough to accommodate a range of housing options, such as apartments, townhouses, and single-family homes. Ideally, the land should be located near public transportation and within easy access to jobs, schools, and other amenities.
The housing development company would need to design and construct the housing units. The company would work with architects and builders to create affordable and sustainable housing options that incorporate energy-efficient design features, such as solar panels, green roofs, and rainwater harvesting systems. The housing units could also be designed to maximize space and provide residents with access to communal areas, such as gardens, playgrounds, and community centers.
To make the housing units affordable, the housing development company could explore various financing options. For example, the company could work with government agencies to secure low-interest loans or grants. The company could also partner with local businesses and nonprofit organizations to provide financial support for the project. Additionally, the company could offer rent-to-own options for residents, allowing them to build equity in their homes over time.
To ensure that the housing units are accessible to a range of income levels, the housing development company could implement a sliding scale rent system based on income. This would allow residents to pay rent based on their ability to pay, rather than a fixed rate. The company could also work with local government agencies and nonprofit organizations to provide rental assistance programs for low-income residents.
To promote sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of the housing development, the housing development company could incorporate renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, wind turbines, and geothermal heating and cooling systems. The company could also implement waste reduction and recycling programs, such as composting and recycling facilities. Additionally, the housing development could be designed to promote alternative transportation options, such as bike paths and electric car charging stations.
To ensure that the housing development is a thriving and supportive community, the housing development company could provide residents with access to resources and services, such as job training and placement services, educational programs, and health care services. The company could also facilitate community events and activities, such as farmers' markets, festivals, and volunteer opportunities.
The creation of a housing development company that focuses on providing affordable, sustainable, and innovative housing solutions could help address the significant problem of the shortage of affordable housing in many urban areas. With the right resources and support, such a company could create a thriving and supportive community that promotes sustainability, equity, and social well-being.

Addressing health disparities has personal value, as everyone should have the opportunity to achieve their highest level of health regardless of their background or circumstances. Improving health disparities requires a multifaceted approach that involves addressing social determinants of health, increasing access to healthcare, providing culturally sensitive care, promoting health literacy, addressing implicit bias, and engaging communities. As a developmental psychologist, by taking steps such as addressing implicit bias, increasing cultural competence, advocating for policy changes, addressing social determinants of health, and promoting health literacy, I can make a positive impact on the health of individuals and communities who are disproportionately affected by health disparities. My work can be a means of making a positive difference in promoting health equity and reducing the impact of health disparities on vulnerable populations.

"Service-learning is a form of experiential education where learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection as students work with others through a process of applying what they are learning to community problems, and at the same time, reflecting upon their experience as they seek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding for themselves" Eyler and Giles, (1999). What was my experience and what did I learn while completing my service learning hours? The opportunities that I was given to complete service learning hours attributed to the enhancement of my learning as well as my personal development and allowed opportunities for critical reflection whilst strengthening my community.
The first thing that I learned while completing my service learning hours is that service learning provides service activities that address community needs as defined by the community. The various activities that I completed were not me volunteering or me completing community service hours. It was a combination of learning and being able to achieve the service goal. I was able to meet the needs of the community, develop civic engagement skills by communicating and collaborating with community members and leaders, and enhance my organizational and interpersonal skills. Most recently, I was allowed to complete service learning hours with Redefined Resilience, a coaching and mentoring program for high-risk, underserved youth. With this organization, under the guidance of the program coordinator, I was able to organize social and educational events and as a peer-to-peer mentor, I was able to assist participants with their homework, and school assignments and help them develop academic goals. This was a truly rewarding experience for me. To be able to explain to another student the importance of goal setting, how to set an academic goal, help them achieve it and watch them soar is the reason why the majority of my service learning hours have been centered around achieving academic goals. The joy in my heart, when the participants contact the center to boast about their accomplishments, is indescribable. This service learning activity has helped me better understand the circumstances of others in my community and has helped me become an effective and empathetic citizen.
The opportunities that I’ve had to complete service-learning activities have helped me grow tremendously over the last few years. Through completing service learning hours, I have been able to develop my problem-solving skills, leadership skills, time management, and communication skills. I have been pushed from my comfort zone into a world of trying new activities, learning new skills and working with individuals from diverse and cultural backgrounds. But most importantly, it has helped me build my self-confidence.
Service learning has not only provided me an opportunity to learn new skills and gain new perspectives but it has also allowed me to feel more connected to my community. I understand what my community needs and I understand the importance of dedicating my time to the needs of others.
