Wieland Nurse Appreciation Scholarship
I have decided to pursue a career in nursing because of the nurses that helped my parents with cancer treatment. In 2019 my mother was diagnosed with cancer. I was her home care provider while she went through treatment and about 8 months later my father was diagnosed with cancer and I was his home care provider.
Fortunately, my mother is in remission but I lost my father eight weeks after his diagnosis. The words that continued to float from both of them were the continual kindness that the nurses showed them. The nurses helped me help my parents, emotionally and mentally. One day I was with my mother in triage and she was finally able to rest and not be in pain, I stepped outside the room to try to compose myself because I was exhausted. One of the nurses came up to me and told me that I should consider stepping into this field. She told me she met a lot of nurses in her 28 years of being in the field and she's met a lot of great nurses but she said the exceptional ones are the ones that have the compassion because of what they have been through. She told me at her age she went through something very similar with her parents and it drove her to be a nurse. From that moment I knew the medical field was the field, I wanted to step into. I owe any and all success to her.
As I start college in the fall of 2022 I am going in with a strong mindset, a good attitude, and a heart that is open. I absolutely love to learn and I know education will always be a part of my life when I become a nurse. My ultimate goal is to become a nurse that specializes in oncology. I'm excited for the challenge that will come with this, the opportunity to learn, and the people I will meet.
I recognize that education is an important aspect of nursing as well. The nurse that helped my mother in triage helped educate my mother and me in simple ways to improve her quality of life; during and after treatment. We were able to get through the next chemotherapy and multiple radiation appointments more comfortably because of the advice the nurse gave us.
I am so grateful to be at a place in my life where I can pursue my calling and help make a difference in this world.
