Kristina Sacco is the woman who inspired me to pursue a degree in social work. Throughout my time at Haddon Heights, Jr/Sr High school I had an IEP. Mrs.Sacco was my social worker for all six years of my education there. I don't think I would have graduated high school without her helping hand. She always checked on me; from the first day of school until my last few weeks of class.
At times I felt as though she was the only support I had in school. She was there for me for simple things like choosing my classes every year and going over my grades while also being a shoulder to cry on, helping me make big decisions for my future.
Freshman year was a struggle for me, and I ended up not passing most of my classes. Mrs.Sacco was there to help me and made sure that I was doing everything to pass the classes my sophomore year, helped me with the process of signing up for summer school so that I would be able to graduate on time.
Throughout my junior and senior years, she helped me learn how to access applications and pick what schools I applied to. Wrote me letters of recommendation to send to school. I was given all of this support through a computer screen, over email, or google meets. I don't think anyone could have imagined spending almost the last two years communicating with people over email and video calls. Working an in-person job and being face to face with students her whole career, and then suddenly everything changed, and having to work in a whole new way.
We would talk about my grades and how I felt I was doing with my classes every month, even once school was all virtually during the pandemic. Knowing that I had someone who cared about my success to make sure I was doing well with everything that was happening in the world made me want to try as hard as possible to do my best.
Kristina Sacco is the reason that I want to work with children and young adults after college. She is also the reason I'm going to pursue a career in social work and plan on working in the education or medical system after college. Before I had met Mrs.Sacco I didn't plan on going to college, and at that point, I didn't think I would ever make it to the end of high school.
