My name is Keisha Carrasquillo Jimenez and I am from Cayey, Puerto Rico. I have been living in Florida since the age of 9 years old and I currently am pursuing a degree in nursing. I come from El Campo in PR so when I first moved to the states, life became so different for my siblings and I. We had to learn english and adjust to the culture. I remember when I first started school in the states, kids would bully me because I did not understand much of what was going on. This pushed me to learn the culture so people would stop making me feel so small. My mom has inspired me to be better every single day since I could remember. I will never forget one night in Puerto Rico, my mother was sick on the couch and looked into my eyes as a 5 year old and told me to be better than her. Ever since then, I have strived to become better so I can help my sick mother now. I have always been interested in the human body and in medicine. Back in 2018, I was at church when someone had asked me the reason I want to pursue nursing. I feel like this is a calling from God above all other reasons. I believe that my ability to be sympathetic and empathetic will allow me to create a safe space for those who are struggling with their health. I enjoy being able to be there for people in more ways than just physical but also spiritual. During clinicals, I have enjoyed building rapport with patients and seeing how happy they are that someone cares for them and is willing to listen to their story. My goal in nursing is to get my Master's Degree so I could specialize in mental health. I have struggled with mental health for quite some time and be able to give back to the community. I believe that it is important to take care of yourself mentally since everything that is in the mind, sometimes manifests into the physical. With all of this being said, since I come from a family who doesn't have much money, I would feel forever thankful if I were given the help to fund my education. This journey of being the first generation graduate has not been easy but it is one that will be well worth it in the end.
