I chose to major in computer science with a software development concentration at Marist College because great software design speaks to me. I am a photographer, musician, and creative writer. My artistic endeavors led me to study computer science. In web design and development, the keyboard is my palette, and the screen is my medium. I previously held false notions about computer science throughout my adolescence. As an African American female, I never envisioned myself as a computer scientist due to a lack of diverse perspectives in the technology industry. My perspective widened after I excelled in a web design and development elective in high school. I recognize many students do not have the opportunity to be exposed to computing careers before college, and I became inspired to engender diversity in computing.
I leap at opportunities to share my experiences in a variety of forums to make my mission of retaining diversity in computing a reality. I founded the Marist Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers to create a community for black students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). I had the opportunity to speak about steps for retaining historically underserved students in STEM while on a student panel at the Enterprise Computing Community conference. I mentor black and hispanic high school students interested in pursuing technology careers. I aspire to create an inclusive learning environment for all students in STEM, and develop software with inclusivity and accessibility at its core.
