Bio

My name is Kayla Wong. I am an identical twin who loves to sing, dance and perform on stage. I love to serve my community and make others happy in any way possible. I graduated from Coronado High School in 2022 and I am a current student at Brigham Young University. In high school, I took AP and Honors classes and participated in many extracurriculars. I always try to challenge myself, so I can improve and do better. I was President and a Section Leader in my choir program and sang in Honor and Allstate choirs and Zion's Youth Symphony and Chorus, I also participated in my school's musical as an actor and dance captain/assistant choreographer. I participated in Key Club and the National Honors Society as an officer/Publicist. I also love to serve others in my church. During high school, I also took and taught piano lessons at the South Nevada Musicality Schools. Here at BYU, I am currently an undecided major, but I am leaning towards Exercise and Wellness with a double minor in Cultural and Ballroom Dance, or a Dance BA major with a double minor in Theatre Art Studies and Cultural Dance. I am a member of one of the BYU Folk Dance Teams and hope to become a member of BYU's International Folk Dance Ensemble. I am also one of the founders of the new Scottish Highland Dance Club at BYU. I am also a competitive Scottish Highland Dancer who has been dancing for the past ten years, and I recently received my teacher associate in Highland dance. I have a passion for dance, music, and serving my community to help make a better tomorrow.

Joey Anderson Dance & Theater Scholarship
"When words are no longer enough we sing, when singing is no longer enough we dance, and when speaking, singing, and dancing are no longer enough, we put all three together." This is a quote said by one of my favorite dance professors I have had at BYU. It perfectly captures why I am passionate about theater and dance. Dance is a hidden language, it allows me to express myself when words no longer can. Dance can be so personal yet so universal because it tells a story and has so much emotion and meaning behind it. It can mean something different to everyone that experiences it, the dancer, the choreographer, and the audience. Dance makes me genuinely happy, and from past experiences of dancing with others, teaching others, and learning from others, dance seems to make everybody happy. I hope to be able to express my love and passion for dance by teaching and inspiring others to love dance, no matter their age, size, or level of ability. Dance is an expression of love, culture, belonging, history, and so much more because dance is a beautiful art designed for everyone to make personal connections with it, whether by dancing, choreographing, or watching. Dance tells stories. And just like dance, the theater is another form of storytelling art. The theater is not a movie or a book, it is a story being told in real life. A story filled with music, dance, singing, and everything that makes a story come to life. But it's different than a movie, because each theater performance is unique, though it may be the same story. Each actor, dancer, and performer on that stage, whether they are the leading character or not has a story and each character gets to live their story on stage, and the best part is that each story is uniquely different from the others and more likely than not to their own actual personal life. One of my favorite things about theater is that it just acting, it is a break from one's actual life where they have the opportunity to play a pretend, made-up story character, yet these pretend characters have an impact on the people watching them. Live theater is a real-time experience. The theater is an escape from reality for the audience members, directors, and performers. I have experienced many emotions and feelings while watching a play/musical as well as experienced the emotions of being a director and performer. It is one emotional rollercoaster, but it is so worth it in the end because everyone has worked so hard, and no matter what the story is it is always a beautiful work of art. I am passionate about theater and dance because they give me life. They are a part of who I am, and I believe that through theater and dance, we can tell amazing stories and convey a meaningful message that can help change the world and bring hope and purpose to others as it has for me. Without theater and dance, especially, I don't know what I would do with my life. They bring me joy, happiness, strength, feelings of accomplishment, and better health. Dance and theater is my life and is an essential form of art that has been around for many decades. It will continue to be an essential part of my life and have a huge impact on my life and others as it is a form of art that will always be alive.
Bold Hope for the Future Scholarship
I find so much joy in music, whether it is sing, dancing, or playing an instrument, in my own home or performing on stage. I enjoy it because I am doing something I love and am passionate about that is making other people smile and find joy in their lives. I don't only perform for my own happiness, but to make someone else happy. I hope to bring positive and uplifting messages to people everywhere through the light that illuminates when there is song and dance. One thing that gives me hope that the future will be better is the power of music. Music brings a spirit into a room and spreads it through people, giving each individual person different feelings and emotions. It can make a person feel happy, sad, empowered, peaceful, calm, exhilaration, the list could go on and on. Music allows one to express themselves, whether it's through singing, songwriting, dancing, playing an instrument, or just simply listening and resonating to a song. Music gives life sound. No matter what happens in the world, music was always there. Music is a mediator. Music can relieve pain and create moments of stillness in time. Music has always helped me calm down and relieve stress. Music gives me hope that the world will continue on and the future will be better and brighter. Music is my medium. Music helps me to balance my emotions and connect with other people and things. There is so much power in music, that sometimes people can't recognize it. Music brings people together, even though they might not realize it. People bond over music and express themselves through music. Music is love. there are so many different songs and styles that I don't know one person that doesn't love or enjoy music. Music is love and the world needs more love. People find hope through love and music. Music gives me hope that more love and respect will develop in the world and the future will be brighter, better, and more alive and musical.
