As an enthusiastic advocate for women's healthcare and rights, my life goals revolve around becoming a nurse midwife and possibly an obstetrician. My primary aim is to bridge the gap between nurse midwives and obstetricians, allowing for more comprehensive and efficient maternal healthcare.
Furthermore, I want to open birth centers nationwide, starting with Augusta, Georgia, where the maternal mortality rate is at its highest in the United States. My passion lies in political health advocacy for women, and I am currently working with a non-profit law firm to achieve more childbirth rights in Augusta, Georgia. I am pushing for changes in two laws to make it easier to establish healthcare facilities, and I am suing the government to stop local facilities from restricting trade for new healthcare facilities that want to open.
My personal experiences make me a great candidate for this role. As a mother to three young boys, two of whom have special needs, I actively promote special needs awareness within the community. Volunteering and political activism in my community have taught me the importance of engaging with people and building relationships.
As the wife of a veteran who served 12 years, including three years in Afghanistan, I understand the challenges military families face, emphasizing the need for accessible healthcare. Originally from the UK, my journey to America has given me an international perspective on women's healthcare, fueling my determination to make a difference.

With this support, I am confident that I can achieve a level of success that fulfills my aspirations and serves as an inspiration and catalyst for positive change in the community.
LGBTQ+ Wellness in Action Scholarship
In the relentless pursuit of academic and professional goals, mental and physical wellness often become secondary. However, maintaining my mental and physical health is not just important; it is essential. It is the bedrock upon which my ability to function as a student, a mother, a foster parent, and a future nurse is built. In this essay, I will explore why mental and physical wellness are paramount to me and the challenges I face in maintaining them.
Mental and physical wellness are intricately linked to my effectiveness and resilience in every role I play. As a nursing student, the rigors of academic life are intense. The complexity of my studies and the emotional weight of preparing for a career where lives are in my hands require a clear and focused mind. My mental wellness directly impacts my ability to absorb and apply complex medical knowledge. Similarly, physical health is crucial for the stamina required in nursing, often involving long hours and physically demanding tasks.
Being a mother and a foster parent adds another layer to why my wellness is crucial. My children and foster children rely on me not just for care but for emotional support and stability. The physical demands of parenting, from the daily routines to the unique needs of my foster child, who is deaf and has cystic fibrosis, require me to be in good physical health. Mentally, I need to be present and empathetic, able to provide the emotional nurturing they need.
However, maintaining mental and physical wellness as a student is challenging. The first challenge is time. Balancing a demanding academic schedule, parenting, and personal care often means more hours in the day. This time constraint makes it difficult to engage in regular physical exercise or to dedicate moments for mental relaxation and self-care.
Financial constraints also play a role. As a student, resources are often limited, impacting my ability to access wellness-related activities. Gym memberships, healthy food options, and mental health services can be costly, and balancing these expenses with tuition and family needs is a constant struggle.
Another challenge is the pervasive culture of constant busyness and productivity in academia. This culture often glorifies overworking and undervalues self-care, leading to guilt associated with taking time off for mental or physical health. Overcoming this mindset and prioritizing wellness requires conscious effort and, sometimes, going against the norm.
Despite these challenges, I am committed to maintaining my mental and physical health. I integrate physical activity into my daily routine, whether a short home workout or a walk with my children. For mental wellness, I practice mindfulness and allocate time for activities that I enjoy and that help me relax, such as reading or yoga. Additionally, I seek support from peers and mentors who understand and encourage the importance of wellness in a student’s life.
In conclusion, my mental and physical wellness are pivotal to my success and effectiveness as a student, a parent, and a future nurse. The challenges in maintaining this wellness are real and significant, stemming from time constraints, financial limitations, and cultural attitudes. However, I navigate these challenges through conscious effort, support from my community, and a commitment to self-care. My wellness journey is a testament to the belief that taking care of oneself is not an act of indulgence but a fundamental necessity for a fulfilling and successful life.

As a nurse, I plan to engage in community education initiatives, focusing on maternal health, preventative care, and managing chronic conditions. By empowering individuals with knowledge and resources, I aim to foster a more informed and proactive community about their health.

My experiences have taught me the importance of individualized care and the profound impact a supportive and knowledgeable medical professional can have during childbirth.
Beyond clinical practice, I am committed to healthcare advocacy, particularly in reforming policies to improve accessibility and quality of care for women and children. @ESPdaniella Disabled Degree Scholarship
As a nurse in training and as a doula with personal experiences with severe ADHD, I am deeply committed to transforming maternal care for women with disabilities. My professional journey has exposed me to the challenges faced by women who are blind, deaf, or wheelchair-bound during childbirth, where their disabilities are often inappropriately used to justify C-sections over natural birth options.
My approach as a nurse midwife is centered around empowerment and individualized care. I aim to ensure that disability is not seen as a limitation but as a unique aspect requiring specialized understanding. This involves adapting medical practices and facilities to accommodate the diverse needs of these women and educating healthcare professionals about inclusive practices in maternal care.
Drawing from my own disability, I understand the importance of treating each woman holistically, not allowing their disability to define their childbirth experience. My goal is to foster a respectful and supportive birthing environment where the desires and choices of women with disabilities are prioritized.
My vision is to advocate for policy changes and more inclusive practices in maternal healthcare, ensuring that every woman, regardless of her abilities, can experience childbirth in a way that honors her strength and choices.

My passion for hacking and tinkering, a blend of creativity and technical skill, has always been a fundamental part of who I am. From a young age, I was fascinated by the mechanics of how things worked and the potential to improve them. This journey has not only been about solving problems but also about delighting and inspiring others through innovation.
One particularly memorable experience was during my time as a student in the nursing program. I noticed that a significant challenge for healthcare professionals was efficient patient data management and quick access to medical records. Determined to find a solution, I embarked on a project combining my nursing knowledge and hacking skills.
Drawing from my experience as a foster parent and a nursing student, I recognized the crucial need for quick access to information, especially for patients with complex medical needs like my foster children. I developed a prototype for a streamlined patient data management system that utilized a simple, user-friendly interface to improve the efficiency and accuracy of data retrieval in medical settings.
This system was more than just a technical accomplishment; it was a tool that could potentially transform the patient care experience. The excitement and appreciation from my peers and instructors were overwhelming. They were delighted by the simplicity and effectiveness of the system, which addressed a real-world issue they faced daily. This positive feedback fueled my desire to refine the system further, incorporating suggestions and making it even more user-friendly.
Another instance where my tinkering skills brought joy to others was when I modified a toy to be accessible for children with disabilities. Inspired by my foster child, who is deaf, I realized that many toys are not designed with the needs of children with special needs in mind. Using my knowledge of electronics and programming, I adapted a popular electronic toy to produce tactile and visual cues in addition to auditory ones, making it accessible for children with hearing impairments.
The joy on the faces of children who could now engage with a toy they previously couldn’t was profoundly fulfilling. It was a reminder that hacking and tinkering can create inclusive environments and bring happiness to those often overlooked. This experience also underscored the importance of considering diverse needs in design and innovation, a principle I now apply in all my projects.
My hacking skills have also been applied in my entrepreneurial endeavors. As a local business owner, I utilized these skills to create efficient business processes and innovative services that set my companies apart. This not only improved the operations of my businesses but also enhanced the customer experience, leading to increased satisfaction and loyalty.
In conclusion, my journey with hacking and tinkering has been about more than technical proficiency. It has been about using innovation to solve real problems, create inclusive solutions, and delight others. Whether improving healthcare systems, adapting toys for children with special needs, or enhancing business processes, my aim has always been to use my skills to impact the world positively.
I remain committed to this philosophy as I continue to grow in my career and personal endeavors. I believe that the true power of hacking and tinkering lies in their ability to inspire, innovate, and bring joy to people’s lives. With each project, I strive to solve complex problems and create solutions that delight and inspire those around me.

My family's decision to adopt a child with cystic fibrosis and deafness has further solidified my commitment to this path, emphasizing the importance of compassion in nursing and the need for a knowledgeable and supportive medical team.

My journey with addiction and the path to sobriety has been both challenging and enlightening, profoundly shaping my perspective on life and my aspirations in the field of healthcare. My personal experience with addiction, although indirect, has been deeply impactful, primarily through my role as a foster parent and a nursing student, witnessing the devastating effects of substance abuse, particularly the fentanyl crisis, on families and communities.
Living in Augusta, Georgia, where the maternal and infant mortality rates are alarmingly high, I have seen how addiction can ravage lives. My experience in the conception of the Augusta Birth Center was partly driven by this crisis. As a foster parent focusing on reunification, I've encountered numerous cases where children were taken away due to their parents' substance abuse. These experiences highlighted the urgent need for better resources and support for expectant mothers struggling with addiction.
One of the most harrowing aspects of my journey was witnessing the impact of the fentanyl crisis firsthand. The tragic stories I encountered during my nursing education - from a 6-month-old infant's death due to fentanyl inhalation to a 1-year-old's fatal ingestion of the drug - were heart-wrenching and served as a stark reminder of the urgency of addressing this epidemic. These incidents didn't just affect the families involved; they resonated deeply with our entire nursing cohort, bringing the realities of addiction closer to home.
These experiences have significantly influenced my perspective on addiction and recovery. Witnessing the consequences of substance abuse, especially among young adults and children, has underscored the need for early intervention and comprehensive prevention strategies. This understanding has fueled my commitment to educating others about Substance Use Disorder and the importance of mental health support in addiction recovery.
In light of these experiences, I am determined to use my education and position to make a meaningful difference. My goal is to integrate addiction education and support into the services offered at the Augusta Birth Center. By providing comprehensive women's health services, including mental health and addiction support, I aim to create a safe and supportive environment for expectant mothers battling substance abuse. This approach is not just about treating addiction but also about preventing its tragic consequences, especially in vulnerable populations like pregnant women and infants.
Furthermore, I am committed to working with local schools, community organizations, and government agencies to develop effective prevention and intervention strategies for the fentanyl crisis. This includes educating young people about the dangers of opioids, providing access to mental health and addiction services, and supporting families impacted by addiction. Addressing the issue at its root, particularly by targeting drug trafficking and distribution, is also crucial in reducing the availability of dangerous substances like fentanyl.
In conclusion, my experience with addiction, albeit indirect, has profoundly impacted my life and shaped my professional goals. As I continue my journey in healthcare, I am dedicated to using my education and experiences to help others overcome addiction and its devastating effects. By focusing on education, prevention, and comprehensive support, I hope to contribute to a healthier, safer community where the cycle of addiction can be broken, and lives can be transformed for the better.

Community service has always been a cornerstone of my life and a fundamental expression of my desire to make a meaningful impact in my community. For me, giving back is not just an act of kindness but a commitment to improving the lives of those around me. It's a way to use my experiences, skills, and time to foster positive change and address the pressing needs of my community. This essay reflects on my journey in community service, highlighting the significance of these efforts personally and for the community.
As a mother of three boys, two with special needs, I've developed a deep understanding of the importance of empathy, compassion, and respect in every interaction. These personal experiences have been instrumental in shaping my approach to community service. They've taught me that everyone deserves dignity and consideration regardless of their circumstances or background.
One of my most significant community service endeavors has been improving healthcare access for women in Georgia, especially in my hometown of Augusta. The healthcare landscape here is dire, with no birth center within a 130-mile radius and limited midwifery services. These limitations are compounded by the state's poor childbirth outcomes, including high maternal mortality rates. My goal is to ensure that every woman has access to safe, reliable healthcare, a right that should be universal regardless of geographical location.
The path to achieving this goal has been fraught with challenges, particularly my struggle to open a birth center in Georgia. My initial efforts were met with resistance and legal barriers imposed by hospitals exploiting loopholes. However, the turning point came when a legal firm offered to represent my case pro bono. This support rekindled my resolve and underscored the importance of persevering in adversity.
My personal childbirth experiences have also played a crucial role in my community service journey. After a traumatic first childbirth, which resulted in an emergency c-section, I was fortunate to have a successful vaginal birth after cesarean, thanks to a supportive nursing team. This journey through motherhood ignited my passion for improving maternal care and influenced my advocacy work.
Currently, I am engaged in efforts to change Georgia law to enable the opening of birth centers without needing certificates of need. This task involves challenging powerful hospital associations and entrenched interests, yet progress is being made. I'm working with a nonprofit law firm on lawsuits and legislative changes to increase healthcare access, especially for low-income communities.
In addition to advocacy, I serve as the executive director of a nonprofit organization focused on healthcare for young women. This role allows me to empower young women through education about their health and healthcare options, which is vital for improving community healthcare outcomes.
Community service is about creating sustainable change. It's about bringing together diverse groups to work towards common goals and addressing societal issues that affect us all. It's a responsibility and a privilege to contribute to the betterment of our community, knowing that our collective efforts can lead to significant improvements in people's lives.
In conclusion, my experiences as a mother, advocate, and community leader have profoundly underscored the value of community service. My work improving maternal care in Georgia exemplifies how dedicated service can address critical issues and enact real change. Community service is about utilizing our unique skills and talents for the greater good, and I am committed to continuing this work. My aim is to improve healthcare access and inspire others to engage in community service, fostering a world where everyone works together to better our communities.

My involvement in nursing school and entrepreneurial ventures has also allowed me to engage in community activities, such as media events for Americans for Prosperity, where I advocate for women's health issues. This involvement has been enriching, allowing me to use my platform to make a difference and champion the causes I believe in.
Higher education represents more than just academic achievement; it symbolizes hope, opportunity, and the breaking down of barriers. In conclusion, the experience of balancing work and school has been a pivotal aspect of my life. It has significantly contributed to my personal and professional development, teaching me the value of resilience, hard work, and empathy. Living out my faith in daily life, particularly in support of the Pro-Life movement, is integral to who I am. My faith, deeply rooted in Christian principles, constantly guides my actions and decisions. This commitment extends into my nursing student, mother, foster parent, and life advocate role. It shapes my future goals and career path as I aspire to use my education and experiences to enact positive societal changes, emphasizing the protection and respect for all stages of life.
The journey of faith is deeply personal and yet outwardly manifest in my interactions and initiatives. It began with the understanding that life is a sacred gift from God, deserving of protection and care from conception to natural death. This belief is not just theoretical; it has been practiced in various aspects of my life. As a mother and foster parent, I have embraced children, including those with special needs, affirming their right to life and dignity. This experience has enriched my family's life and strengthened my conviction in the sanctity of every human life, regardless of its challenges or disabilities.
My faith has significantly impacted my career path. Inherently focused on caring and advocating for others, the nursing field aligns perfectly with my Pro-Life beliefs. Through my nursing education, I have gained a deeper understanding of the preciousness of life, especially in its most vulnerable stages. I have witnessed the tragic realities of maternal mortality and the often-overlooked value of the unborn in healthcare settings. These experiences have deepened my resolve to advocate for life and equipped me with the knowledge and skills to effect change within the healthcare system.
I have taken concrete steps in my local community to live out my faith and Pro-Life stance. I played an active role in establishing a birth center, providing a safe and natural option for childbirth, and thereby championing the protection of both maternal and unborn lives. A pivotal element of this center is the inclusion of a Safe Haven Baby Box, offering a compassionate alternative for mothers in crisis. This initiative underscores the community's commitment to respecting and preserving life at all stages.
Looking ahead, I plan to utilize my nursing degree to advocate for policy changes that respect and uphold the sanctity of life. My education provides me with a unique platform to articulate a Pro-Life stance from a healthcare perspective, emphasizing data and real-life implications. Specifically, I aspire to influence public policy reform, focusing on the rights and care of disabled babies in the foster care system. It's crucial to address the systemic gaps that often leave these vulnerable lives without the care and love they deserve.
In conclusion, my faith is not just a belief system; it's an active, daily commitment to uphold the dignity and value of all human life. Through my roles as a student, mother, and advocate, I endeavor to embody the principles of my faith, inspiring others to recognize and protect the inherent worth of every life. My education and future career in nursing are not merely professional choices but are integral to my mission to advocate for life at every stage, influencing society to embrace a culture of life and respect.
Joseph Joshua Searor Memorial Scholarship
Personal experiences, advocacy, and the indomitable spirit of community service drive my educational journey to nursing. Each thread represents a step towards my calling, which crystallized not in a single moment but through a consistent, heartfelt revelation of what care can mean to someone. As I apply for the Joseph Joshua Searor Scholarship, I am inspired by Joseph's story, which mirrors my belief in lifelong learning and the drive to enhance healthcare services through dedicated nursing.
I am a non-traditional student, a mother, an advocate, and a future nurse midwife. My road to nursing began in the delivery room, where I faced the sharp realities of childbirth with an emergency C-section followed by a victorious VBAC. These pivotal experiences laid the foundation for my commitment to midwifery. However, the adoption of our son with cystic fibrosis and deafness extended my vision to the broader spectrum of nursing. His resilience in the face of relentless medical challenges has taught me that nursing transcends the act of care—it embodies hope and the fierce urgency for advocacy in healthcare.
I've switched from passive observation to active involvement, working on law changes in Georgia and engaging in lawsuits to champion healthcare accessibility. This fight for systemic change is informed by my belief that quality healthcare is a fundamental right, not a privilege. By integrating advocacy with healthcare, I aim to reform the system from within, drawing from my profound personal insights as a patient, a mother, and a citizen activist.
The "aha" moment that solidified my resolve to be a nurse came after my first child's birth. Anjili, who stood by me, exemplified the power of supportive care. She believed in my strength to embrace natural childbirth again, which I later achieved, fueling my ambition to empower others with similar support. Her mentorship did not end with childbirth but evolved into guidance for my advocacy work, especially in my endeavor to open the Augusta Birth Center. She showed me how one person's support can turn a daunting healthcare system into a journey of hope and personal victory.
Joseph Joshua Searor's legacy resonates with my pathway. His courage to step back into academia to advance his expertise as a nurse practitioner at 41 inspires me to defy barriers and embrace the rigorous yet rewarding journey of nursing education. Like Joseph, I recognize that the need for skilled, compassionate nurses is urgent and indispensable, especially in midwifery, where a personal touch can turn medical procedures into healing experiences.
In applying for this scholarship, I see a synergy between my mission and Joseph's. I am determined to walk the extra mile by equipping myself with knowledge and training that extends beyond conventional nursing. My end goal is to offer comprehensive maternal care that caters to the holistic well-being of mothers and babies, fostering a community where healthcare disparities are diligently addressed and advocacy leads to tangible improvements.
This scholarship would be a tribute to Joseph's memory and the potential lives saved and improved through educated nursing care. It's a torch I intend to bear, ensuring that my educational and career path honors the essence of what he stood for—courage, dedication, and transformative care.
The shared passion for nursing and education that Joseph and I possess is a testament to the enduring impact of nurses who don't just work but inspire change.
Annie Pringle Memorial Scholarship
Breast health education holds a deeply personal significance, stemming from my genetic makeup and intimate life experiences. Carrying the BRCA gene mutation is not merely a statistical increase in cancer risk; it is a palpable shadow that has loomed over my family history. With every female over the age of 45 in my lineage having faced the harrowing battle with breast cancer, the imperative of breast health education has never been more urgent or personal.
My commitment to breast health is further intensified by my experiences with breastfeeding, which have provided me with profound insights into the sanctity of motherhood and the unique health challenges women face. While navigating my first semester of nursing school, I donated over 100 pounds of breast milk. This is a testament to my dedication to the well-being of infants and the belief in the irreplaceable value of mother's milk.
However, my journey has not been without its hurdles. When I adopted my third child, I was determined to provide the benefits of breast milk and attempted to pump milk for my baby. Yet, despite my efforts, I was hampered by the lack of access to a lactation consultant. This obstacle underscored a gaping void in lactation support for new mothers. A void that can hinder breastfeeding success and, by extension, affect breast health.
Recognizing this gap, I have a clear vision for integrating comprehensive breast health education and support into my practice. By obtaining certification in lactation consulting, I aim to bridge the divide between knowledge and access, ensuring that mothers continue as I did due to a lack of resources. Breastfeeding is more than nourishment; it is a protective factor against breast cancer for both the nursing mother and child—a point often overlooked in breast health discussions.
My aspirations are nested in establishing a birth center that prioritizes breastfeeding support, including pump rentals and lactation-trained staff, providing round-the-clock assistance to mothers in need. This center will not only be a haven for nurturing the bond between mother and child but will also serve as a sentinel for women's health, offering services to detect breast cancer at its nascent stages.
Training my staff in lactation support is a deliberate choice to ensure women's health is treated holistically and preventively. By educating women about the importance of breast health and the benefits of breastfeeding, we will lay the groundwork for healthier families and a stronger community. These services in one location encapsulate my holistic vision of healthcare—one where education, prevention, and treatment are inextricably linked, offering a continuum of care that begins with the most fundamental act of a mother feeding her child.
Moreover, breast health education extends beyond clinical practice; it is about advocacy, about ensuring that every woman understands her risks, her body, and the choices available to her. As a nurse and future lactation consultant, I aim to demystify breast health to confront the stigma and misinformation that often surrounds breastfeeding and breast cancer awareness.
In this light, breast health education is not simply a professional interest; it is a personal crusade fueled by genetic foresight and sculpted by the adversities faced by the women in my family. It is a beacon that guides my academic and professional pursuits and a legacy I hope to construct for future generations—a legacy that proclaims every woman's right to comprehensive health education and support.
This commitment to breast health education and lactation support is what drives me toward excellence in my nursing career. It is the convergence of my genetic predisposition, maternal experiences, and professional ambitions. By embodying the principles of education, advocacy, and care in my practice, I endeavor to transform the breast health landscape, making it inclusive, informative, and empowering for all women.
Jennifer Gephart Memorial Working Mothers Scholarship
Balancing work and caregiving is akin to treading a tightrope that stretches across the vast expanse of personal aspiration and responsibility. It is an arduous journey, marked by perpetual exhaustion and boundless fulfillment—an endeavor that has shaped my essence and career ambitions profoundly.
As a first-generation immigrant, the American dream was not just a concept to me; it was a lifeline, a promise of potential and opportunity that I clung to when I arrived with a scant $100 to my name. That figure was symbolic, a testament to starting from the ground up, and has since been a constant reminder of my resolve to surmount socioeconomic barriers. Pursuing higher education, specifically in nursing, is a cornerstone of that dream. It is a gateway to not just elevating my own life but also to nurturing and healing countless others.
My past—fraught with trials, including providing care for my sister with severe autism and facing postpartum depression—has granted me a profound empathy that transcends most professional qualifications. It fuels my ambition to become a nurse, where the tenets of compassion and resilience are indispensable. The weight of caregiving has been a crucible, refining my ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and cherish the human connection.
The role of a mother to three boys is at once my greatest challenge and my prime inspiration. It taught me to be formidable in adversity and to use each 24-hour cycle with purpose and intention. Juggling entrepreneurship, parenting, and education has been an exercise in the art of balance. It has necessitated sacrifice—like the 4 AM risings and the weekend meal preps—but has imbued every victory with immeasurable sweetness.
These experiences have indelibly marked my professional aspirations. Nursing is not just a career; it is a calling to inject the empathy born from my struggles into patient care, a channel to transform personal pain into healing service. The academic knowledge paired with life-tested skills prepares me for this sacred task. My ambition is to specialize in midwifery, to stand at the birthplace of life, and to offer strength to those embarking on the daunting journey of parenthood.
I envision a future where my small business experience dovetails with nursing, where I can advocate for reforms and lend a voice to the unheard—those hurt by the scarcity of healthcare resources or the cold bureaucracy that often stifles innovation in medical practices. In Georgia, I've leveraged my voice and grit to advocate for law changes, signifying my dedication to championing accessible healthcare.
My role in lawsuits and advocacy is not an extracurricular endeavor; it is an extension of my nursing education, a fundamental part of my future practice. By standing on the frontline of policy change and providing care, I hope to be a harbinger of transformation, ensuring birth centers thrive without onerous regulations and that low-income areas gain greater healthcare access.
Conclusively, my quest for higher education is animated by a desire not just to rise but also to lift my family, patients, and community. It represents hope, the relentless pursuit of excellence, and a commitment to serve. Every sacrifice made along this journey imbues me with the conviction that education is a conduit for change and empowerment. Thus, I ardently seek this scholarship, not as a mere financial aid, but as a catalyst that will enable me to continue nurturing, healing, and advocating pillars upon which I aim to build my nursing career.
Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship
My journey to the field of maternal health care has been deeply personal and shaped by my own experiences as a first-generation immigrant, mother of three boys, local business owner, and a dedicated advocate for healthcare reform. Growing up, I watched my single mother, who worked with babies, juggle the responsibilities of caring for my sister with severe autism and providing for our family. Her resilience and kindness in the face of adversity inspired me to amplify goodness in the world and ignited my passion for maternal care.
In my pursuit to become a nurse midwife, I have encountered numerous obstacles, from balancing family responsibilities and academic commitments to navigating the complex web of healthcare advocacy. Despite these challenges, I am determined to make a meaningful impact on maternal healthcare, especially for Black mothers who often face significant barriers to accessing quality care.
The scholarship will be a stepping stone towards achieving my goal of opening the Augusta Birth Center, a facility that will prioritize mental health during pregnancy and postpartum while also providing comprehensive maternal care. The center will be equipped with midwife nurses qualified in psychiatric and mental health, ensuring that mothers receive the support they need during this crucial time. In addition, we will offer group support meetings, counseling services, and other resources to address the mental health needs of mothers, with little to no cost as a barrier.
Furthermore, the Augusta Birth Center will work towards tackling the disparities in Black maternal health by providing culturally competent care and addressing the specific needs of Black mothers. This is particularly important as Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women, a stark and unacceptable disparity that must be addressed.
The scholarship will provide me with the financial support needed to continue my education and ultimately open the Augusta Birth Center. This facility will not only be a testament to the values and lessons I have learned throughout my journey but also a beacon of hope and opportunity for mothers in need of quality maternal care. The Augusta Birth Center will embody the principles of compassion, inclusivity, and empowerment, ensuring that all mothers, regardless of their race or socioeconomic status, have access to the care they deserve.
In conclusion, this scholarship will be instrumental in helping me achieve my dream of opening the Augusta Birth Center and making a positive impact on maternal healthcare. The facility will be dedicated to addressing the mental health needs of mothers during pregnancy and postpartum while also tackling the significant disparities in Black maternal health. My mother's resilience, kindness, and commitment to family have been a constant source of inspiration for me, and I am committed to embodying these values in my future work. Through the Augusta Birth Center, I aim to create a more compassionate, inclusive, and equitable healthcare landscape for all mothers, regardless of their race or socioeconomic status.

Growing up in a home with one parent, I had an incredible opportunity to witness my mother's incredible strength, determination, and kindness. She cared for three children, one of whom had special needs, and worked tirelessly to provide for us. Her unwavering commitment to our family in the face of adversity has been a source of inspiration for me. Seeing her work ethic played a significant role in shaping my values and ambitions as a college student and mother.
As I watched my mother work with newborns as part of her job, I became deeply interested in midwifery from a young age. Seeing how she nurtured and cared for these precious bundles and their mothers made me realize the impact that compassionate and skilled healthcare professionals can have on families during such a necessary time in their lives. This experience ignited my passion for care. Ultimately, this drove me to pursue a career as a midwife.
Now, as a parent to three children, two of whom have complex special needs, I often find myself drawing upon the lessons taught by my mother. The ability to find positivity and kindness in the most challenging situations is a guiding principle in my personal life and professional aspirations. In midwifery, I am wholeheartedly dedicated to tackling all aspects of the mother's health during pregnancy and postpartum. Unfortunately, the mental well-being of mothers often goes unnoticed, resulting in long-term effects on both them and their children. This matter profoundly drove me as I experienced severe postpartum depression. I intend to confront the maternal mental health crisis from pregnancy care onwards.
Once I complete my studies, I aspire to establish the Augusta Birth Center. The facility will provide holistic care for mothers. Our center will focus not only on natural birthing methods but also on mental health. Every Midwife at our center will be qualified in mental health care to ensure mothers receive support and attention during this crucial period.
Moreover, at the Augusta Birth Center, we will offer group support meetings and counseling services tailored to address health needs. These services will be provided at no cost, eliminating financial barriers often hindering women from seeking assistance. We aim to create a nurturing community that fosters wellness and supports one another.
My mother's unwavering strength, kindness, and deep commitment to our family have inspired me. Her influence has shaped my core values and fueled my aspirations. As I embark on my nursing education and healthcare reform journey, I am driven to make a difference in the world. Specifically, I aim to address the pressing issue of postpartum and pregnancy health by providing maternal care to needy families. The establishment of the Augusta Birth Center will manifest these aspirations, embodying the principles of compassion, inclusivity, and empowerment that have been instilled within me since childhood.

I've always had a strong passion for acquiring knowledge, driven by my desire to impact and improve the lives of others genuinely. Various sources of inspiration, such as books and movies, have significantly expanded my perspectives and shaped my aspirations.
One book that genuinely profoundly affected me is "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth" written by Ina May Gaskin. It beautifully highlighted the wonders of natural birthing methods and the incredible strength of the female body. This book challenged conventional beliefs about childbirth, opening my eyes to the idea that it shouldn't be viewed solely as a medical event requiring intervention but as a natural and empowering process that every woman should have the opportunity to experience on her terms.
The profound impact of this book has fueled my commitment to establish the Augusta Birth Center. We aim to create a nurturing environment where comprehensive maternal care is provided, emphasizing natural birthing approaches. We strive to offer women all the necessary resources and support they need to experience childbirth in a comfortable and empowering manner.
However, our vision for the Augusta Birth Center extends beyond just offering natural childbirth options. We are deeply concerned about addressing the often-overlooked crisis surrounding postpartum mental health issues during pregnancy. Our mission is to provide comprehensive support within our healthcare system to ensure that every aspect of maternal well-being is given proper attention.
Based on my experiences and the knowledge gained from various books and movies, I have come to deeply understand the significance of addressing the mental well-being of mothers. I have witnessed how dedicated healthcare professionals can make a profound difference in helping individuals facing mental health challenges. That's why at Augusta Birth Center, we prioritize caring for maternal mental health as a fundamental aspect of our services.
To tackle this critical issue, Augusta Birth Center will offer comprehensive mental health support for mothers during pregnancy and after giving birth. Our approach to maternal care is holistic, recognizing the vital connection between physical and psychological well-being. All our midwife nurses are fully qualified in psychiatric and mental health care, ensuring that mothers receive top-notch support.
In addition to our focus on maternal care, I am deeply committed to advocating for healthcare reform and ensuring that high-quality care is accessible to everyone, regardless of their socio-economic background or circumstances. My journey as a first-generation immigrant has instilled in me the importance of striving for a fairer and more inclusive healthcare system.
Through my education and future endeavors, my goal is not only to impact the lives of women and families positively I serve but also to contribute towards achieving broader healthcare reform goals and improved access to quality care.
My main objective is to establish a care model that can be replicated nationally, making a meaningful impact on the healthcare landscape by promoting compassion, inclusivity, and fairness.
My journey has been greatly influenced by diverse experiences, lessons from literature and movies, and a deep-rooted desire to contribute positively to the world around me. The Augusta Birth Center embodies this journey as it represents my dedication to providing comprehensive, inclusive, and empowering care for expecting mothers. I am resolute in my determination to address the mental health challenges during pregnancy and postpartum period, advocate for healthcare reform, and ultimately contribute towards creating a healthcare system that is compassionate and fair for everyone.
John Nathan Lee Foundation Heart Scholarship
In the vast tapestry of life's experiences, personal challenges often present opportunities for growth and transformation. One such challenge in my life has been navigating the complex and overwhelming world of cardiac health, explicitly dealing with Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia (IST). The manifestations of this condition intertwined with the tapestry of my life, profoundly affecting my roles as a student, mother, caregiver, and healthcare advocate.
From the moment I embraced my first child, I was propelled into a lifelong commitment to uplifting healthcare standards. This commitment was born out of necessity and fueled by the heartbeats that IST would irregularly affect. IST, a condition where the heart's natural pacemaker, the sinus node, sends electrical impulses faster than usual, has not only been a physiological challenge but a reminder of the fragility and resilience of life.
Being a mother to three vibrant boys and a caregiver to a sister with autism, life has always demanded a balance between personal responsibilities and healthcare needs. Every heartbeat echoed the reminder of IST, subtly affecting decisions, plans, and aspirations. Balancing the frequent medical consultations and treatment regimens for IST while ensuring my autistic sister received the care she deserved gave me a unique perspective on the healthcare system, highlighting its miracles and gaps.
As a first-generation immigrant, the challenges were manifold. The medical lexicon, often alien to many, became a language I had to master swiftly, ensuring I could advocate for myself and my family. The intricate dance between IST management, familial commitments, and my dream of joining the healthcare sector could only be orchestrated with unwavering determination.
Pursuing a nursing degree while managing IST instilled in me a deep-seated resilience. There were times when the palpitations became overwhelming, yet the dream of bridging the midwifery gap in the U.S. kept me grounded. Every experience solidified my mission, from an emergency c-section to adopting a child with specific health challenges. If I could navigate the labyrinth of IST and come out stronger, I was sure I could create pathways for others to access compassionate and comprehensive healthcare.
Additionally, my journey into the heart of healthcare reform, aiming to revolutionize access to midwifery in Georgia, further highlighted the need for persistent advocacy. IST had already shown me the importance of accessible and quality healthcare, which became my advocacy's cornerstone. When battling against the bureaucracy in Georgia, the rhythms of IST served as a backdrop, underscoring the urgency of my mission. The heartbeats that sometimes faltered with IST propelled me forward, fueling my pursuit of change.
The financial constraints of medical management for IST and pursuing a nursing degree posed another layer of challenges. Holding down two jobs, managing medical bills, and ensuring my children received their deserved care meant sleepless nights and long hours. Yet, the ambition to make a mark in healthcare and make a difference in the system that diagnosed and managed my IST kept me going.
My battle with Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia has been more than just a medical challenge. It's been a lesson in perseverance, a testament to the human spirit's ability to rise above adversities. The heart that sometimes raced uncontrollably also held within it a reservoir of strength, channeling energy into my pursuits, whether familial, academic, or advocacy-driven.
As I march forward in my journey, I carry with me the symphony of my heartbeats, the constant reminders of IST, and the determination to reshape the healthcare landscape. My experiences with IST have shaped my perspective and solidified my commitment to building a healthcare system anchored in empathy, inclusivity, and innovation.

Life's journey is dotted with challenges that shape our character, deepen our resilience, and solidify our determination. For me, the path toward a career in pharmacy, layered with personal and professional trials, stands as a testament to my unwavering commitment to making a difference in the healthcare industry.
From my first moments as a mother, the urgency to elevate healthcare standards became a personal mission. My initial aspiration was in nursing, sparked by my role as a caregiver to my autistic sister and further solidified by personal experiences with childbirth and motherhood. As I delved deeper into the medical field, mainly when introduced to pharmacology, an ignited passion for pharmacy became evident. The more I learned about pharmacology, the more I was drawn to its complexities and its pivotal role in patient care. These experiences taught me empathy, resilience, and an intrinsic motivation to enhance patient care. I've now charted a course where nursing will serve as my supplemental income, supporting me as I embark on the rigorous journey through pharmacy school.
My dedication to nursing was undeniably intense. While managing family responsibilities and advocating for healthcare reform in Georgia, I juggled academic commitments and maintained a flawless attendance record. This strenuous and demanding period highlighted my capability to overcome adversity, stay focused, and prioritize effectively. This balancing act was even more complicated with the healthcare needs of my two sons, one autistic and the other with cystic fibrosis.
However, as I delved deeper into the healthcare realm, my interest shifted towards pharmacy, fueled by my nursing background that provided a foundational understanding of pharmacology and patient interactions. My experience as a nurse allowed me to appreciate the integral role of pharmacists in patient care. Their expertise in medications, interactions, and strong patient rapport can significantly influence treatment outcomes. I recognized that my nursing background gave me a unique vantage point and a solid base to transition into pharmacy.
While pursuing nursing was already filled with challenges, my desire to advocate for healthcare reforms added another layer of complexity. My initiatives, such as supporting increased midwifery access in Georgia and spearheading lawsuits for better healthcare in low-income areas, required unwavering dedication and commitment. These endeavors showcased my determination to see systemic change in the healthcare system, which I believe would be furthered with a career in pharmacy.
Volunteering and community service have always been close to my heart. Beyond advocating for legislative changes, I've actively promoted foster parenting and adoption in Georgia. The drive to make a tangible difference in my community and the lives of vulnerable children showcases my commitment to serve, an integral principle in the pharmacy profession.
Financial constraints, amplified by the pressures of managing two jobs and a full-time academic load, were yet another obstacle on this journey. These hurdles, while demanding, offered invaluable lessons in adaptability, perseverance, and the significance of a robust support system. Each challenge faced has only fortified my resolve to excel in my studies and career, underscoring my enthusiasm to impact others' lives positively.
My path toward pharmacy, laden with personal and professional challenges, epitomizes my determination, resilience, and passion for healthcare. From nursing to advocating for healthcare reforms, each step has reinforced my belief in the necessity for patient-centric care, a tenet central to pharmacy. As I transition from nursing to pharmacy, I am armed with experiences that have shaped my worldview and fortified my commitment to healthcare. My journey is a testament to my dedication to serve, educate, and make a lasting impact on patients' lives.

The voyage of life is punctuated with challenges and joys, ebbs and flows. For a single mother, this voyage mirrors both the turbulent storms and calm seas, interspersed with moments of sheer resilience and unyielding hope. Similarly, my journey towards becoming a nurse, amidst the multifaceted role of single motherhood, has been both rewarding and challenging, reminiscent of the yin and yang of life.
1. My Academic Pursuit:
I am currently studying nursing. Nursing, for me, is not just a profession; it's a calling, a conduit through which I hope to touch lives and make a difference. Particularly, my passion lies in midwifery, an area that encapsulates the very essence of life. Being there for expectant mothers, providing them with care, and witnessing the miracle of birth aligns deeply with my personal experiences and aspirations.
2. Overcoming Obstacles:
As a single parent, my academic journey hasn't been a straightforward path. From sleepless nights juggling assignments after bedtime stories to managing financial constraints, every day brings its own set of challenges. The cacophony of life often seems ceaseless. There are days when school runs overlap with clinical hours or when an important exam coincides with a sick child.
However, amidst these challenges, I've found strength in embracing moments of stillness. Whether it's a few minutes of meditation or just savoring a silent moment with a cup of tea, these moments have grounded me. Journaling has also been a cathartic release, helping me navigate my emotions, articulate my anxieties, and celebrate small victories. Through nature walks and structured routines, I've found semblances of peace and predictability. Most importantly, practicing self-compassion has been my beacon, reminding me that in every step of this journey, I am doing my best.
3. Future Plans and Goals:
Upon completion of my degree, my immediate goal is to specialize in midwifery. I aim to bridge the gap in the lack of midwives in the United States, ensuring more mothers have access to holistic prenatal and postnatal care. Every woman deserves to experience childbirth in a supportive and nurturing environment, and I aspire to be a part of that solution.
In addition, I am deeply committed to healthcare reform. Drawing from personal experiences, from undergoing an emergency c-section to adopting a child with specific health needs, I recognize the disparities and gaps in our current healthcare system. I am determined to amplify my voice, advocating for healthcare as a fundamental human right, and ensuring that quality care is accessible to all, irrespective of socio-economic status.
Furthermore, my involvement in pushing for legislative changes in Georgia and my advocacy endeavors have fortified my belief that systemic change is possible. I intend to continue these efforts, focusing on making healthcare more inclusive and accessible, especially in underserved communities.
In conclusion, as I tread the path of single motherhood and academic pursuit in nursing, every challenge face becomes a testament to my resilience and every joyful experience amplifies my passion. Through this scholarship, I seek not just financial aid but an acknowledgment of my journey, dreams, and the undying spirit of hope that propels me forward. My journey might be akin to navigating turbulent waters, but with every wave conquered, I am one step closer to stitching my dreams into the fabric of reality.

The positive impact these reforms can have on society cannot be overstated. Increased access to care leads to healthier mothers and babies, reduces medical complications, and builds a stronger community.
Furthermore, advocating for access to healthcare in economically disadvantaged areas will help bridge the gap in healthcare disparities. This ensures that everyone has an equal opportunity to lead a healthy life regardless of their status.

My financial circumstances have played a role in shaping my educational journey. As a first-generation immigrant, I faced challenges in providing a good life for my family. These challenges became more pronounced when I became a mother, adding new dimensions to my personal and financial struggles. Dealing with the expenses of bills, tuition fees, and everyday costs while caring for my sister with severe autism and two sons with unique health issues has been an ongoing source of strain. To manage these constraints, I took on two jobs. Had to balance academic requirements with the needs of my family. Despite these limitations, they never discouraged me; they fueled my determination to pursue education and follow my dreams.
Receiving a scholarship would be genuinely transformative as I strive to become a nurse and midwife. It would alleviate the financial burdens that currently weigh on me and symbolize an investment in my aspirations and goals. With this support, I could dedicate time to studying, reduce the hours spent on wage labor, and focus wholeheartedly on what truly drives me: healthcare reform and advocacy. Furthermore, by experiencing financial stress, I could better balance fulfilling my responsibilities toward my children's well-being and maximizing my academic potential.
This scholarship means more to me than financial support. It represents hope and confidence in my ability to impact the healthcare industry.

Jeanie A. Memorial Scholarship
I felt a strong pull towards the healthcare sector from the first time I became a mother. My vision was clear: I aspired to stand at the crossroads of healthcare and compassion, providing solace and hope to those in their most vulnerable moments. A mosaic of my personal experiences forged this call to service in healthcare, be it as an immigrant, a mother, or the primary caregiver to my sister, who was diagnosed with severe autism.
My background taught me early on about the crucial role healthcare professionals play. Caregiving to my sister for 15 years ingrained in me the values of compassion and understanding. Later, as I embarked on my journey into motherhood, I encountered many challenges, including an emergency c-section and the joy of a VBAC. With three children, one of whom we adopted who battles cystic fibrosis and deafness, my perspectives on healthcare grew profound.
Driven by these personal experiences, I decided to join the ranks of nurses. A significant motivator is the glaring disparity of midwives in the U.S., and my resolve is to fill this gap. But, my goals were open to more than direct healthcare provision. Georgia's current legislative landscape restricts the operation of birth centers without certificates of need. Recognizing such centers' immense potential in elevating maternal care, I actively advocated to amend this law.
My work continues beyond there. I am deeply enmeshed in two lawsuits challenging the state's healthcare provisions while championing two legislative changes to democratize healthcare access for marginalized communities. I've always believed in pushing the boundaries of advocacy beyond its conventional realms. This explains my relentless efforts towards promoting foster parenting and adoption in Georgia, underscoring my commitment to the well-being of the most vulnerable.
Yet, all these endeavors took work. Being a student while managing family responsibilities was a tightrope walk. Sleepless nights and early mornings were typical as I alternated between my books and my children. But my will was indomitable. My perfect attendance record at school is a testament to this unwavering commitment to my academic and future professional pursuits.
This intricate balance between family, advocacy, and academics was challenging. Catering to the unique needs of my sons, especially in a system not always conducive to such care, often left me overwhelmed. Their unique challenges demand a mix of emotional, financial, and time resources, making my pursuit of a nursing degree even more complex. Additionally, my efforts to influence change in the healthcare landscape of Georgia, given the magnitude and significance of these changes, often consumed large chunks of my time.
Financial constraints, too, were a tangible challenge. With the expenses tied to higher education, I found myself navigating the pressures of two jobs while ensuring I stayed committed to my academic pursuits. Despite these multifaceted challenges, the experiences endowed me with perseverance, the ability to adapt, and a realization of the importance of a robust support system.
My journey towards a nursing degree, although peppered with challenges, has been enriching. Balancing the roles of a mother, advocate, and student tested my mettle at every step. But every challenge also taught me invaluable lessons. I emerged academically stronger and, as an individual, more attuned to the intricacies of life and healthcare. As I tread ahead in my nursing career, these challenges will serve as the foundational pillars, inspiring me to continually strive for excellence and ensure a healthcare system that is more compassionate and accessible for all.
Sustainable Business Scholarship
Businesses are the lifeblood of our economy and touch nearly every aspect of our daily lives, from our products to the services we rely on. If these entities prioritize sustainability, the ripple effect on the environment, society, and economy would be immense. Implementing eco-friendly measures isn't just about saving our planet; it's also about creating a brighter future for the upcoming generation, ensuring that they inherit a world as abundant and beautiful as the one we live in today.
From my vantage point, balancing family, studies, and a keen interest in a sustainable future, here are three practices I believe businesses can and should implement to reduce their carbon footprint:
1. Prioritize Remote Working: With rapid technological advances, remote work has never been more feasible or efficient. Beyond the benefits of flexibility and work-life balance, its ecological impact is substantial. Commuting is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. By allowing employees to work from home, businesses can drastically reduce the collective carbon emissions resulting from daily commutes. As I juggle studies, appointments, and playdates, I see firsthand the value in removing the commute from the equation—not just for the environment but also for mental well-being and family life. Additionally, remote working can reduce the need for large office spaces, reducing energy consumption.
2. Introduce Mandatory Recycling and Composting: In the same way I teach my boys the value of tidying up after playtime, businesses should take responsibility for the waste they generate. Instituting a rigorous recycling program is essential. Reducing single-use items, like the infamous K-cups, and switching to sustainable alternatives can make a difference. Businesses generate much organic waste, whether it's the remains of a team lunch or used paper towels. Composting these materials instead of sending them to landfills can significantly reduce methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas. It's a practice as simple as teaching my children to separate waste but on a grander scale.
3. Incentivize Green Personal Choices: Businesses have a unique role in influencing the behavior of their employees. Companies can extend their sustainable ethos beyond the workplace by providing incentives for eco-friendly home upgrades. Consider, for instance, a rebate program for employees who install solar panels at home. The potential aggregate reduction in carbon emissions from such initiatives can be monumental. If businesses championed these personal eco-choices as passionately as I advocate for my children's well-being, we'd be leaps and bounds closer to a greener future.
While my immediate focus might be on healing bodies or nurturing young minds, I firmly believe in the broader lesson of stewardship—for our health, our children, and our planet. Businesses wield significant influence in our world, and by integrating sustainable practices, they can lead by example, shaping a brighter, greener future for us all. It's a future I yearn for, especially as I look into the curious eyes of my three boys, hoping for a world where the synergy of economy and ecology is not just an ideal but a lived reality.

Balancing the hats of a mother to three lively boys, a nursing student, and an ardent community advocate isn't a walk in the park, but it's a path I've chosen with determination and heart. From witnessing the joys of motherhood to the intricate dance of raising a child with autism and fostering another with hearing impairment, life has given me an intensive course in patience, resilience, and advocacy.
When faced with adversity, whether in my personal life or broader societal issues, my instinct has never been to shy away. Instead, I confront these challenges, seeking alternative solutions. My drive stems from a deeply personal space—fighting for my autistic son's rights, pushing for support services for our soon-to-be-adopted deaf child, and striving to uplift families walking in shoes similar to mine. These experiences solidified my commitment to a career in nursing, melding my passion for advocacy with a quest to provide quality healthcare to those in need.
One such endeavor was establishing the Augusta Birth Center (ABC). Envisioned as a haven for Georgia mothers seeking a safer alternative to hospital or home births, our dream faced hurdles due to Georgia's Certificate of Need (CON) program. Despite meticulous planning and adherence to every protocol, the unforeseen obstacles from the CON felt like doors slamming on our noble cause. But, just as I've learned in motherhood, challenges only serve to strengthen resolve. Partnering with PLF, we challenged Georgia's CON law in federal court, channeling our frustration and disappointment into a concerted effort for justice.
With maternal mortality rates alarmingly high and infant mortality figures that trail even some third-world nations, Georgia undeniably requires an intervention. The absence of accessible birth centers highlights this pressing need. While ABC's journey remains an uphill battle, our commitment remains unwavering. Our goal isn't just one center; it's about reshaping Georgia's healthcare landscape, advocating for more birth centers, and ensuring every mother, regardless of geographical or financial circumstances, has access to safe childbirth options.
As a political advocate and social justice warrior, I work tirelessly to foster policy changes that benefit patients and healthcare professionals. Two lawsuits, attending nursing school, mothering my trio, political advocacy through the Georgia House of Representatives—yes, it's a lot on my plate. But every initiative stems from a singular aim: elevating community healthcare standards. I am mainly driven to rectify the healthcare disparities women face in Georgia.
Shortly, I envision opening a string of birth centers across Georgia, with Augusta as the starting point. As the executive director of a nonprofit focusing on young women's healthcare, my goal extends to empowering these women guiding them to prioritize their health and well-being.
In reflection, the myriad experiences that have intertwined with my life—from personal trials as a mother to more immense communal struggles—have been pivotal in shaping my perspective. Individual or collective challenges aren't roadblocks; they're detours redirecting us to more profound, meaningful paths. My nursing journey, strengthened by my attributes of tenacity, empathy, and innovative problem-solving, mirrors this belief. It's a testament to the idea that with dedication, passion, and a bit of audacity, we can redefine norms, pushing boundaries to craft a more inclusive, empathetic, and just community.
A Man Helping Women Helping Women Scholarship
From the first heartbeat I heard during my pregnancy to the complex emotions of childbirth, life has guided me to the fulfilling world of nursing. As a mother of three vivacious boys under four and an adult returning to school, my journey is far from conventional, but it's deeply personal. My passion for midwifery and the complexities of pregnancy reflects my own experiences, and my drive stems from a place of understanding, empathy, and a will to make a difference.
Being a mother has given me an intimate view of the miracles and challenges of childbirth. I've faced the stark reality of an emergency c-section, the elation of a successful VBAC, and the boundless depths of maternal love when adopting a child with cystic fibrosis and deafness.
Each moment has emphasized the invaluable role that compassionate and knowledgeable medical professionals play in our lives. My son's consistent medical needs and the incredible care he receives have ignited my resolve to provide the same level of unwavering support and expertise to others.
But beyond the walls of hospitals and clinics, I've realized that healthcare is a mosaic of policy, accessibility, and advocacy. In Georgia, I've been pushing for legislative changes to facilitate the operation of birth centers without demanding certificates of need. This is not just about paperwork; it's about expanding access to midwifery care and diversifying options for expectant mothers. My involvement in lawsuits against the state, in tandem with a non-profit legal firm, centers on granting individuals in low-income regions better access to healthcare. Every person, irrespective of their financial or social backdrop, deserves access to quality healthcare – a right, not a privilege.
Nursing, for me, isn't just a profession; it's a mission. By specializing in midwifery, I aspire to bridge the significant gap of midwives in the United States, ensuring that women receive quality prenatal and postnatal care. My vision for a brighter healthcare future includes unwavering advocacy for systemic reforms. Through these avenues, I am determined to create a ripple effect that ensures compassionate care for expectant mothers, more robust support systems for families like mine with special needs, and equitable healthcare access for all.
In sum, my life as a mother, an advocate, and a budding nurse is a testament to my commitment to positive change. With every step in my nursing journey, I aim to weave my personal experiences with my professional aspirations, creating a tapestry of care that uplifts, heals, and reforms. Through my career, I am poised to touch individual lives and reshape the broader healthcare landscape, ensuring that everyone receives the care, respect, and support they inherently deserve.
Veerappan Memorial Scholarship
Life is a series of experiences, each presenting unique challenges and growth opportunities. One pivotal event that profoundly impacted my life was my attempt to open a nonprofit, freestanding birth center in Augusta to address the dire need for improved maternal healthcare. Unfortunately, my proposal was rejected by the Certificate of Need program in Georgia, which grants hospitals the power to veto new birth center services. Instead of allowing this setback to discourage me, it fueled a fire within me to fight for change in Georgia's maternal healthcare regulations and achieve success in my personal and professional life.
The rejection of my proposal was a catalyst that drove me to take on the restrictive regulations in Georgia, advocating for every woman's right to access safe, compassionate, and high-quality maternal care. This newfound mission inspired me to deepen my knowledge in nursing studies, becoming an unwavering advocate for healthcare reform. I realized that my purpose extended beyond establishing a birth center; I was meant to be a voice for the voiceless, fighting for social justice and equal access to healthcare for all. As a result, I became more engaged in lawsuits against the state, collaborating with other healthcare advocates to challenge the status quo and push for much-needed change in Georgia's healthcare system.
Confronting adversity required me to develop resilience and adaptability. I had to learn how to balance my family life, academic commitments, and advocacy work, which was no easy feat. This demanding journey helped me acquire valuable skills in time management, effective communication, and networking. These skills enabled me to establish and nurture relationships with other healthcare professionals, creating a solid support system that facilitated collaborative efforts. Furthermore, I learned to leverage the power of social media to raise awareness about the issues plaguing maternal healthcare in Georgia, rallying support from a broader audience and amplifying my advocacy efforts.
During this process, I discovered the importance of persistence and determination in facing challenges. I learned that obstacles could be transformed into opportunities for growth and self-improvement. My journey taught me to remain steadfast in my convictions and adapt my strategies to achieve my goals.
My advocacy work also opened my eyes to the interconnectedness of various issues within the healthcare system. I began to recognize how different factors, such as socioeconomic disparities, systemic biases, and policy shortcomings, contribute to the challenges faced by underserved communities. This insight fueled my passion for creating lasting change and helped me develop a more holistic approach to advocacy.
As I continue to fight for better maternal healthcare in Georgia, I am driven by the belief that change is possible and that we can make a lasting impact by standing up for what is right. My experiences have strengthened my resolve and empowered me to be an agent of change in my community and beyond.
Moreover, I faced financial challenges in funding my education and advocacy work. To overcome these obstacles, I sought scholarships, grants, and other financial resources to support my efforts.
My journey has taught me the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and maintaining a solid support system. I have learned that change takes time and requires a sustained commitment to the cause and the willingness to adapt to new challenges and opportunities.
In conclusion, rejecting my proposal to establish a birth center in Augusta was a turning point in my life, igniting a passion for advocacy and a determination to succeed in my personal and professional pursuits.
Girls Ready to Empower Girls
My journey towards pursuing higher education, particularly a BSN degree, was significantly influenced by Anjili, the owner of the Atlanta Birth Center, where I experienced the birth of my first child. Anjili's unwavering belief in my potential during a challenging birthing scenario fanned the flames of my aspiration to become a midwife. Her relentless support altered my understanding of childbirth and cast a new vision for my career.
When the birth of my first child took an unexpected turn, necessitating a transfer to Atlanta Medical Center and culminating in a C-section after 52 strenuous hours, Anjili stood firm as my anchor. She instilled in me the understanding that this turn of events was not a reflection of failure, but a testament to my inherent resilience. Her words inspired me to courageously opt for a natural birth for my subsequent child, demonstrating the power of unwavering determination and the right kind of support.
Anjili's unfaltering guidance was especially pronounced during the demanding days of the 2020 COVID lockdown, further cementing our bond. Her unwavering dedication fuels my current ambition to inaugurate the Augusta Birth Center. I ardently wish for more women to benefit from the kind of unparalleled care Anjili offers, firmly believing that such dedication can transform our society.
My pursuit of a BSN is an intersection of my passion for midwifery and the study of the science of nursing. This science goes beyond basic patient care, delving into complex biological, psychological, and sociological concepts that influence health outcomes. The discipline fascinates me because it combines rigorous scientific principles with the art of caregiving, making nursing both a heart-centered vocation and a cerebral profession. As a nurse, my goal is to form deep bonds with expectant mothers, ensuring they receive top-tier support during the monumental moments of their lives. With the present shortage of midwives in the U.S., I am eager to specialize in midwifery, championing its efficacy in providing unparalleled care to mothers and their infants.
I'm further impassioned by the broader picture of healthcare, its advocacy, and the ongoing reform. Everyone, regardless of their financial or social standing, should have access to exemplary healthcare. My personal experiences emphasize the importance of this equal access, spurring me to become its advocate.
In summary, Anjili's impact on my journey cannot be overstated. Her unwavering faith in me has informed both my personal and professional choices. My decision to delve into the science of nursing and specialize in midwifery stands as a tribute to her influence. With an unwavering commitment, I seek to extend her legacy by empowering future mothers and pushing for healthcare that truly serves all. Together, by drawing from our collective experiences and dedication, we can usher in transformative changes for the betterment of society.
Lost Dreams Awaken Scholarship
Recovery, in its essence, isn't merely the cessation of a detrimental habit; it's a transformative process that leads one toward self-awareness, resilience, and rediscovery. In my life, recovery has been a poignant voyage of introspection and empowerment, particularly as I chart my path in the nursing field. I now encourage my patients to give up drinking and tell them my story.
I recall a phase when a single drink every evening became my refuge. It was a seemingly innocuous ritual that soon metamorphosed into the sole source of my anticipated solace. However, life has a way of presenting wake-up calls when we least expect them. While driving, I encountered a horrible accident resulting from an intoxicated driver's choices. That accident was a mirror of a potential future I hadn't envisioned. I resolved then and there to stop.
Turning to technology, I utilized free apps dedicated to aiding individuals on their sobriety journey. Each day became a testament to my commitment to change. Today, I celebrate a significant milestone: five years of untouched sobriety.
Recovery signifies the freedom of choice. Gone is the need to find solace in a bottle; in its place, I've unearthed the strength to create my happiness. Recovery means regaining proper health, both mentally and physically. As I pursue a career in nursing, my journey amplifies my commitment to health and well-being. It's a daily reminder of the transformative power of choices and the boundless potential within us to redefine our destinies.

This voyage mirrors the turbulent storms and calm seas for a single mother, interspersed with moments of sheer resilience and unyielding hope. Similarly, my journey towards becoming a nurse amidst the multifaceted role of single motherhood has been rewarding and challenging, reminiscent of the yin and yang of life.
I am currently studying nursing. Nursing is not just a profession; it's a calling, a conduit through which I hope to touch lives and make a difference. Remarkably, my passion lies in midwifery, which encapsulates life's essence. Being there for expectant mothers, providing them with care, and witnessing the miracle of birth aligns deeply with my personal experiences and aspirations.
As a single parent, my academic journey has been challenging. From sleepless nights juggling assignments after bedtime stories to managing financial constraints, every day brings challenges. The cacophony of life often seems ceaseless. There are days when school runs overlap with clinical hours, or a vital exam coincides with a sick child.
I've found semblances of peace and predictability through nature walks and structured routines. Most importantly, practicing self-compassion has been my beacon, reminding me that I am doing my best in every step of this journey.
Upon completing my degree, my immediate goal is to specialize in midwifery.
I am determined to amplify my voice, advocating for healthcare as a fundamental human right ensuring that quality care is accessible to all, irrespective of socio-economic status.
Furthermore, my involvement in pushing for legislative changes in Georgia and my advocacy endeavors have fortified my belief that systemic change is possible. I intend to continue these efforts, focusing on making healthcare more inclusive and accessible, especially in underserved communities.
In conclusion, as I tread the path of single motherhood and academic pursuit in nursing, every challenge I face becomes a testament to my resilience, and every joyful experience amplifies my passion. Through this scholarship, I seek financial aid and an acknowledgment of my journey, dreams, and the undying spirit of hope that propels me forward. My journey might be akin to navigating turbulent waters, but with every wave conquered, I am one step closer to stitching my dreams into the fabric of reality.
Top of the Mountain Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, the symphony of rustling leaves, the glisten of morning dew, and the infinite hues of nature enthralled me. I realized early on that our environment, the cradle of our existence, was under threat. This epiphany led me to devote my time and energy to environmental causes, embracing the role of an advocate and steward in my community.
My dedication to preserving nature is not just theoretical; it's deeply rooted in action. I initiated a community-based vegetable gardening campaign during COVID-19. This led to people being able to grow their food and fill shortages within their communities. The vegetable waste was then returned to a compost heap, which was then used for the next season.
But advocacy isn't just about grand gestures. It's in the small, everyday decisions. I started teaching my classmates about the importance of sustainable living. One of the main ways I help to reduce the carbon footprint is to educate on cloth diapering. This can save many families thousands of dollars each year and help keep the environment clean.
If I were to reach the top of a mountain, planting my flag per the Ciocan Family motto, my message would be: "From this pinnacle, I see a world vast and beautiful, yet fragile. Cherish it, nurture it, and remember that every action counts. Together, let's tread lightly and leave no trace so that future generations may also marvel at this splendor."
In applying for this scholarship, I desire to further my knowledge and advocacy in environmental sciences. I am committed to being at the forefront of the fight against climate change and ensuring that we hand over a planet to the next generation that's healthier than we found.
Fall Favs: A Starbucks Stan Scholarship
Ah, fall! A season that paints nature with a riot of colors brings a cool nip in the air and promises the comfort of warm sweaters. While many await the vibrant hues of autumn leaves or the aroma of freshly baked pies, my annual fall ritual revolves around a unique concoction from Starbucks: the Iced Apple Crisp Oatmilk Shaken Espresso. This isn't just another seasonal drink; it's a symphony of flavors seamlessly woven into my autumn narrative.
Stepping into Starbucks during fall is akin to entering a wonderland of spices and warmth. Amid the famed Pumpkin Spice Lattes and Salted Caramel Mochas, the Iced Apple Crisp Oatmilk Shaken Espresso stands out with its audacious blend of the season's best – the nostalgic essence of apple crisps combined with the invigorating kick of espresso. Each sip feels like biting into a fresh apple while enjoying the energizing rush of caffeine. The harmony of these flavors, bound by the creaminess of oat milk, makes it the perfect fall drink - capturing the season's essence in a cup.
But why does this drink hold such a special place in my heart? Well, it's not just about the flavors but the memories and moments it has come to represent. Each year, as summer bids adieu and the days become shorter, I find solace in the familiarity of this drink. It signifies the onset of a season that promises transformation - a reminder that change can be beautiful. As the leaves turn amber and gold, my days are marked by sips of this drink, making even mundane moments memorable.
The drink also evokes a sense of nostalgia. The crisp apple flavor reminds me of childhood autumns at my grandparents' orchard. Picking apples under the shade of the trees, followed by baking sessions with grandma, where the kitchen would fill up with the aroma of apples, cinnamon, and love. Now, miles away from the orchard and the warmth of those days, the Iced Apple Crisp Oatmilk Shaken Espresso offers a delicious slice of those cherished memories.
Beyond the personal realm, this drink is a testament to Starbucks' commitment to innovation. By taking a classic fall favorite and merging it with the modern preference for oat milk and espresso, they've crafted a beverage that caters to both traditional and contemporary tastes. This blend resonates with me as a student, constantly balancing the wisdom of the past with the dynamism of the present. Just like how this drink harmonizes the comforting flavor of apple crisp with the zing of espresso, I, too, juggle the lessons from history with the challenges of today in my academic journey.
Moreover, the choice of oat milk underscores a shift towards sustainable and inclusive decisions. As someone passionate about environmental consciousness and inclusivity, enjoying a drink that aligns with these values amplifies its significance. It's a daily reminder of the need to make responsible choices, not just in what we consume but also in our actions and decisions.
In conclusion, the Starbucks Iced Apple Crisp Oatmilk Shaken Espresso is not merely a beverage; it's an experience, a bridge between memories and aspirations, tradition and modernity. As I stand on the cusp of new academic challenges and opportunities, this drink serves as both a comfort and a catalyst, reminding me of the sweetness of the past and energizing me for the future. So, the next time you find yourself at Starbucks amidst the tantalizing array of fall drinks, try this one. It might weave itself into your autumn tale, too.
Netflix and Scholarships!
Streaming platforms have revolutionized how we consume content, and Netflix, the colossus in this realm, consistently delivers a diverse palette of shows that capture global audiences. Of this vast catalog, there's one show that's been a roller-coaster ride for my emotions: "Single's Inferno" Season 2. Now, before you dismiss this as another reality dating show, hear me out.
As a fervent enthusiast of the dating reality show genre, I've navigated the emotional mazes of The Bachelor and have contemplated the social experiments of Love Is Blind. Yet, what sets "Single's Inferno" apart is its refreshing blend of cultural nuances, raw human emotions, and its break from the Western dating show formula.
Imagine being on a scenic island termed 'Inferno'. The allure? You get to leave this beautiful prison for 'Paradise' (a luxurious hotel with enticing amenities) only if you find a match or excel in games. Within this seemingly straightforward structure lie the intricacies of human relationships, moments of vulnerability, and, of course, the quintessential drama. With 9 participants, the imbalanced gender ratio itself becomes a catalyst for brewing tensions.
But what's genuinely compelling about this show is its focus on emotional connections. While many Western counterparts plunge into physical intimacy, Single’s Inferno's conservative approach emphasizes the depth of relationships. This isn't about impulsive passions but understanding and genuine bonding. The cheek kisses and hand-holding have an innocence that lends the show a unique charm. As viewers, we're invited to not just passively observe but to invest in these bonds, dissect conversations, and root for genuine connections.
Complementing this immersion is the celebrity panel that mirrors our sentiments. Their commentary, laced with humor, shock, and insights, makes binge-watching feel like a communal experience. This show celebrates vulnerability, and while the rejection faced by some contestants, like Se Hoon, can be excruciatingly painful, it adds a layer of authenticity. After all, not everyone finds their match instantly, and these raw moments resonate with anyone who's faced rejection.
"Single's Inferno" is also unapologetically candid. Unlike other reality dating shows that often leave viewers speculating about contestants' intentions, this series openly acknowledges the promotional aims of its participants. This transparency endears us further, as we appreciate the duality of these contestants – ambitious individuals seeking love or, at the very least, meaningful connections.
One of the most intriguing elements is the show's ever-evolving rules. By disallowing participants from choosing the same partner consecutively, "Single’s Inferno" keeps both the contestants and the viewers on their toes. This dynamic setting promotes exploration over comfort, fostering an environment where participants genuinely get to know each other before settling on their 'chosen one'. This unique twist is emblematic of the show's commitment to genuine discovery over contrived alliances.
To encapsulate, "Single's Inferno" Season 2 isn't just another reality dating show; it's a profound exploration of human connections, vulnerabilities, and the quest for love. Its delicate blend of cultural values, raw emotions, and the sheer unpredictability of human nature makes it a must-watch. Clear your weekend, because once you enter the 'Inferno', there's no turning back until you've felt the warmth, the burns, and the exhilaration of Paradise. It’s a journey that, much like my own endeavors in life, underscores the beauty of genuine connections, the pain of rejection, and the hope of finding one's own paradise amidst chaos.
“Stranger Things” Fanatic Scholarship
The realm of "Stranger Things" is a magnificent tapestry of mystery, friendship, and the indomitable human spirit. The show has given us many characters, each uniquely equipped to face the bizarre supernatural challenges of the Upside Down. If granted the task to assemble a dream team to combat a new supernatural menace, my instincts align with Nancy Wheeler's – always delving deeper, never deterred by the enormity of the unknown.
Nancy Wheeler stands out, not as the archetypal hero, but as an underdog. She embodies the spirit of perseverance, curiosity, and bravery. Much like my journey of returning to school amidst challenges and forging my path, Nancy's journey resonates. She consistently proves that one need not possess superhuman abilities to make a difference. Her innate drive to seek the truth and protect her loved ones, even when it means standing against the tide, is commendable. She might not be telekinetic like Eleven or a tech whiz like Lucas, but her unyielding determination, intuition, and investigative skills make her an invaluable asset. With this in mind, I would pick the following trio to form my supernatural defense squad:
Nancy Wheeler: As mentioned, Nancy's relentless pursuit of the truth, combined with her sharp intellect, makes her an indispensable leader. She is unafraid to challenge the status quo, constantly pushing boundaries and going against the grain. These traits mirror my journey as I returned to school, navigating the challenges of motherhood and academic rigor. Just as I've learned to balance responsibilities and chase my passion, Nancy balances her life's complexities while never losing sight of the larger picture. Her courage to face human and supernatural threats head-on showcases her resilience and determination.
Eleven: With her psychokinetic abilities, Eleven brings raw power to the team. She has faced the Upside Down's terrors, battled Demogorgons, and even closed the gate. Beyond her capabilities, Eleven's profound understanding of love, friendship, and sacrifice gives the squad a heart. While her strength can combat supernatural threats, her compassion ensures that the team never loses its humanity.
Steve Harrington: Steve's evolution from a high school "bad boy" to the beloved "mom" of the group is awe-inspiring. His loyalty, wit, and combat skills (especially with that nail-laden baseball bat) provide the squad with muscle and levity. Steve's capacity to grow, adapt, and care for those around him makes him an irreplaceable asset, ensuring the team remains grounded.
Drawing parallels from my journey, this squad embodies three core pillars that have guided me: the pursuit of truth (Nancy), harnessing innate strengths (Eleven), and the power of transformation (Steve). Just as I had to summon the courage to chase my dreams amidst obstacles, this squad would employ their distinct attributes in synergy, ensuring they are equipped to face any supernatural menace.
In conclusion, while "Stranger Things" is a work of fiction, its characters offer profound life lessons. They exemplify that heroes come in various forms – from the audacious investigator to the powerful misfit and transformed protector. By embracing our unique strengths, persistently seeking the truth, and allowing ourselves to grow, we can face any challenge, supernatural or otherwise. In this hypothetical scenario, as in life, it's not just about combating external threats but also about the internal journey of self-discovery, growth, and forging unbreakable bonds. With Nancy leading the charge, this squad would confront the supernatural and illuminate the power of the human spirit, determination, and unity.

The journey of single motherhood is an exquisite tapestry of joy, challenges, resilience, and immeasurable love. It's like navigating a ship through both calm seas and turbulent storms. The responsibility of steering this vessel without a co-captain has taught me the indispensable value of self-care and grounding techniques. Resetting amidst the whirlwind of life isn't just a luxury for me; it's an essential survival tool. My children, my dreams, and my well-being depend on my ability to anchor myself when the waves of life try to capsize our ship.
Embracing Moments of Stillness: The cacophony of daily life – from school runs to work commitments, homework sessions to bedtime stories – can be ceaseless. To find clarity, I've learned to embrace moments of stillness. It might be a five-minute meditation during a lunch break or simply savoring a quiet moment with a cup of tea before the household awakens. Though fleeting, these moments recharge my spirit and give me the clarity to face the day's challenges.
Journaling My Journey: Penning my thoughts, fears, and dreams has been therapeutic. On particularly overwhelming days, writing becomes my sanctuary. It allows me to articulate my anxieties, celebrate small victories, and set intentions. By transferring my emotions onto paper, I often find solutions to problems or simply a release from pent-up emotions.
Nature as a Reset Button: There's a profound tranquility in the heart with an uncanny ability to heal. Be it a brisk walk in the park, a quiet moment by a stream, or simply tending to my little garden, nature serves as my reset button. It reminds me of the world's vastness, of life's cyclicity, and that there's a rainbow after every storm.
Seeking Support: Acknowledging that I don't have to face every challenge alone has been liberating. Whether leaning on a close-knit circle of friends or seeking professional counseling, external perspectives often provide fresh insights and solutions. These networks remind me that it's okay to ask for help and that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness.
Structured Routines: Amidst the unpredictability of single parenting, establishing structured routines has been my anchor. This semblance of order, from meal prepping to designated homework time, creates a predictable environment for my children and me. It instills a sense of security and reduces the anxiety of unforeseen challenges.
Self-Compassion: As a single mother, it's easy to fall into the trap of self-criticism. I've made it a point to practice self-compassion actively. This means celebrating my efforts, forgiving my mistakes, and understanding that I am doing my best in each moment. Self-affirmations and gratitude practices have become invaluable tools in this journey of self-love.
Rediscovering Passions: Amidst the roles of mother, provider, and protector, it's easy to lose oneself. I've found solace in rediscovering passions that once brought me joy, whether reading a book, dancing, or indulging in art. These activities aren't just hobbies; they're lifelines that reconnect me to my essence and provide a much-needed escape from life's rigors.
The voyage of single motherhood, with its unique challenges and unparalleled joys, has been my life's most profound teacher. It has taught me resilience isn't just about enduring and finding happiness, peace, and strength in the journey. The techniques I've adopted don't just help me reset; they anchor my soul, allowing me to navigate life's storms with grace, fortitude, and an undying spirit of hope. As I forge ahead, empowered by these tools, I am reminded that the beauty of this journey lies not just in reaching the destination but in the lessons, growth, and transformation along the way.

In the ever-evolving realm of healthcare, where the essence of human connection meets the intricacies of science, my heart found its calling in nursing. While the path leading to my dream has been lined with challenges and the backdrop of motherhood, each step and hurdle has only reinforced my passion and solidified my career goals.
My vision as a nurse is dual-pronged: firstly, to offer compassionate, patient-centric care that holistically addresses the needs of each individual, and secondly, to advocate for systemic reforms that prioritize the well-being of both patients and healthcare professionals. The symbiotic relationship between caregiving and system advocacy has always been evident. While at the bedrock, it is the tender moments with patients that fuel my passion, it is also the broader ecosystem's inefficiencies that spur my drive for change.
The seeds for pursuing nursing were sown early in my life. Witnessing the profound impact that nurses had on the lives of individuals, being the beacon of hope in their darkest hours, stirred something deep within me. Their ability to bridge the chasm between the cold sterility of medical procedures and the warmth of human touch was nothing short of magical. Nurses, to me, were:
The unsung heroes.
Turning medical jargon into comprehensible conversations.
Alleviating fears.
Being the cornerstone of the healthcare system.
However, my journey to realizing this dream has been a challenging path. One of the most daunting challenges I faced was returning to school after embracing the joys and challenges of motherhood. With three children in tow, the youngest being a foster child with unique medical needs, and the cacophony of school bells, assignments, and parental duties, my days often resembled a finely choreographed dance of chaos. Navigating childcare arrangements while ensuring I was present for my classes, clinics, and children was a Herculean feat.
Financing my nursing education added another layer of complexity. The financial strain was palpable, with tuition fees looming large and textbooks with their exorbitant prices. Many nights, after the children were tucked in, I'd find myself poring over my notes, battling fatigue, questioning my decision, and yet, with each dawn, my resolve strengthened.
This crucible of challenges - juggling academic rigors, financial pressures, and the demands of motherhood - has indelibly shaped my perspective as a budding nurse. I've come to appreciate the value of resilience, the beauty of perseverance, and the importance of empathy. These experiences have equipped me with practical skills and instilled a deep-seated understanding of the struggles many patients face. I am more attuned to the single mother worried about her child's health, the patient who grapples with medical bills, and the elderly who feels overwhelmed by the healthcare system's complexity.
As I look ahead, these experiences will be the guiding compass in my nursing career. They will remind me to approach each patient with a heart full of empathy, to listen intently to their stories, and to advocate fiercely for their well-being. Furthermore, having navigated the labyrinth of challenges in my educational journey, I am uniquely positioned to mentor and support aspiring nurses, especially those who tread the path less traveled.
In conclusion, nursing is more than a profession; it's a calling, an embodiment of my life's purpose. While the journey has been fraught with challenges, each obstacle has been a stepping stone, refining my skills and molding my character. As I stand on the cusp of my nursing career, I am grateful for the lessons learned, the challenges overcome, and the infinite possibilities that the future holds.
Ultimate K-Pop Stan Scholarship
The sprawling tapestry of K-Pop, with its vibrant hues of music, dance, and cultural resonance, has become a global sensation. Amidst this colorful mosaic, one artist who has notably touched my life is Moon-Bin, a member of the K-Pop group ASTRO. His presence, both as a musician and as a digital influencer, has not only brought solace during my challenging days but also introduced me to the broader spectrum of South Korean culture.
Moon-Bin’s exuberant positivity on platforms like TikTok serves as an essential antidote for me on stressful days. As I navigate the labyrinth of responsibilities, from political activism in Georgia to managing the daily rigors of motherhood and education, Moon-Bin’s TikTok feed often provides a much-needed oasis of joy. His infectious smile, genuine demeanor, and uplifting messages serve as powerful reminders of the potential for happiness amidst the whirlwind of life. It’s not just the music, but the essence of the individual behind it, that has had a profound impact.
Moreover, Moon-Bin's influence was the catalyst that piqued my interest in K-Dramas. These television series, with their intricate plots and nuanced character arcs, have offered more than just entertainment. They have broadened my horizons, providing a window into the rich tapestry of South Korean culture, traditions, and societal nuances. While the storylines are captivating, it's the cultural immersion that has been most enlightening. From the traditional Hanbok dresses to the intricacies of South Korean family dynamics, these dramas have fostered a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity, allowing me to view the world through a more expansive and inclusive lens.
Moon-Bin and ASTRO's contribution to global culture is emblematic of the broader "Hallyu Wave," South Korea's cultural export that encompasses music, television, and more. While K-Pop has undeniably been the vanguard of this movement, it's the interplay of music with television dramas, movies, and digital content that offers a holistic experience of South Korean culture to global audiences. Moon-Bin, with his dual influence in music and digital realms, represents this multi-faceted approach to cultural exchange.
Furthermore, as global paradigms shift towards greater inclusivity, artists like Moon-Bin play a pivotal role in fostering cross-cultural dialogue. In today's interconnected world, understanding and embracing diversity is more crucial than ever. By delving into the world of K-Dramas, inspired by Moon-Bin, I've not only enriched my personal perspectives but also joined a global community that celebrates cultural exploration and understanding.
The global resonance of artists like Moon-Bin and groups like ASTRO cannot be understated. They serve as ambassadors of South Korean culture, facilitating mutual respect and understanding across borders. Their music, while rooted in South Korean traditions, possesses a universal appeal, resonating with diverse audiences worldwide. This confluence of tradition with global appeal is what makes K-Pop and its artists transformative forces in today's cultural landscape.
In summary, while many K-Pop artists have captured the world's imagination, Moon-Bin, with his boundless positivity and multifaceted cultural influence, holds a special place in my heart. His impact goes beyond music, inspiring exploration, and appreciation of cultural diversity. As I champion healthcare reforms in Georgia and balance the myriad roles in my life, artists like Moon-Bin serve as sources of inspiration, reminding me of the beautiful tapestry of global cultures and the power of positivity. Through his artistry and influence, Moon-Bin has not only enriched my life but has also played a pivotal role in promoting cultural understanding and unity on a global scale.
"The Summer I Turned Pretty" Fan Scholarship
Navigating the sun-soaked world of "The Summer I Turned Pretty" TV series is akin to diving into the complexities of youthful love, maturity, and self-discovery. At the heart of this exploration lies the age-old dilemma of choices, symbolized by the contrasting yet captivating personalities of Conrad and Jeremiah. While both characters offer a rich tapestry of emotions and moments, my allegiance firmly resides with Team Conrad. The depth of his character intertwined with his growth journey, speaks to a narrative that is both relatable and profound.
One cannot discuss Conrad without touching upon his layered portrayal of vulnerability. The series offers glimpses into Conrad's struggles, be it his challenges with his family or the weight of expectations he bears. This depth is most evident in his relationship with Belly. While their dynamic might seem tumultuous, it's Conrad's moments of introspection that resonate. For instance, when he struggles to articulate his feelings for Belly, it isn't just a trope of the "brooding boy"; it's a reflection of his internal battle with vulnerability and fear of loss. His reservations stem not from indifference, but from a deeply-rooted fear of being hurt or causing pain. This vulnerability, albeit masked by a facade of aloofness, makes Conrad a character that many can empathize with.
Drawing parallels with my journey, especially my advocacy work challenging the Certificate of Need law in Georgia, I've witnessed firsthand the challenges that come with fighting one's internal battles while navigating external pressures. Just as I've balanced activism with personal responsibilities, Conrad too grapples with balancing his emotions with the weight of family expectations. His strength, like mine, lies not in the absence of vulnerability but in the recognition and eventual embrace of it.
Conrad's evolution throughout the series is also commendable. The transition from a seemingly indifferent teenager to a young man willing to confront his feelings is a testament to his character's depth. A moment that stands out is when he finally opens up to Belly about his fears and insecurities. This act of baring his soul, of allowing himself to be seen in all his imperfections, speaks to a maturity that is both endearing and commendable.
In contrast to Jeremiah's more straightforward demeanor, Conrad's complexity might seem daunting. However, life, with its myriad of challenges and emotions, is rarely straightforward. In Conrad, we see a reflection of these intricacies. His journey of self-awareness, acceptance, and growth mirrors the trajectory many of us undergo as we transition from the turbulence of youth to the understanding of adulthood.
Concluding, while both Conrad and Jeremiah offer unique perspectives and moments in "The Summer I Turned Pretty", it's the depth, vulnerability, and growth of Conrad's character that resonates profoundly with me. His portrayal serves as a reminder that behind every facade lies a myriad of emotions and battles, and it's the journey of confronting and embracing these that truly defines us. In a world that often seeks simplicity, Conrad's complexity stands out, making him a character not just to root for, but to learn from.

The "Ode to Millennials-Gen Z" eloquently captures the essence of two dynamic generations. It paints a vivid picture, juxtaposing the challenges of yesteryears with those faced by today's youth. The resonating message is clear: Each generation has its battles, but with challenges come opportunities to rise and make an indelible mark on the annals of history. As a representative of this wave of change, having dabbled in political activism and ventured back into academia later in life, my perspective is rooted in experience and a fervent belief in our collective ability to effect transformative change.
Firstly, the ode references the conundrum of intergenerational communication. The scenario of older generations expecting letters and the younger ones favoring telephones has merely morphed into today's digital divide. However, beneath this technological evolution lies a more profound concern: the understanding gap. Today, as my generation grapples with digital natives, the discourse isn't just about differing communication channels but conflicting worldviews.
Being politically active has given me a front-row seat to paradigm shifts. My crusade against the Certificate of Need law in Georgia was not just an act of advocacy but symbolic of the Millennials-Gen Z's spirit of challenging the status quo. Like many others, this law was a vestige of prior generations' visions and decisions. While respect for preceding generations is essential, it's imperative to remember that their solutions were tailored to their challenges. Our contemporary problems require novel solutions born from our unique experiences and perspectives.
The ode rightly posits that the challenges of Millennials-Gen Z are monumental. Indeed, we inherit an economy on the brink, a looming environmental disaster, an education system rife with crippling debt, and many other challenges. Yet, as daunting as these challenges are, they provide a crucible for innovation, leadership, and transformation. As the Greatest Generation stepped up to their rendezvous with destiny, so will we. The political, social, and economic arenas seek fresh thought, invigorated by our experiences.
However, change isn't solely confined to the external world. It's also personal. I stand as a testament to the idea that you're always young enough to pivot toward your passion. In my early thirties, with three children, I chose to return to school. This wasn't merely a pursuit of education but a chase for happiness, fulfillment, and impact. It's a reminder that life's script isn't etched in stone. The ink of our story remains wet, ready to be molded by our decisions. Regardless of their age or station, every individual has the power to rewrite their narrative.
While we must be cognizant of the wisdom that prior generations offer, we mustn't be ensnared by their dogmas. Their experiences, though valuable, might only sometimes align with our needs and aspirations. The world we navigate is different from the one we traversed. Our solutions must, therefore, be tailored to our realities.
In conclusion, the "Ode to Millennials-Gen Z" is more than a tribute; it's a clarion call. It is a call to acknowledge our challenges and, more importantly, to rise to them. As we stand on the precipice of history, we must remember that our rendezvous with destiny is not just an inheritance of problems but an opportunity for legacy. With our unique amalgamation of youthful zest, technological prowess, and the wisdom gleaned from those before us, we are poised to be not just the successors of the "Greatest Generation" but pioneers in our right. The world awaits our imprint, and it's time we etch it deep.

Navigating the path of life is a challenging journey. The challenges and victories that mark our course are a testament to our character, values, and influences shaping our perspectives. As a mother, student, advocate, and wife of a devoted US Navy Veteran who serves on CVN 75, my journey has been adorned with instances that have fortified my resolve, honed my leadership capabilities, and elucidated the importance of communication, resilience, selflessness, focus, determination, and an unwavering work ethic.
Strong Leadership and Communication Skills: My leadership journey took root with my deep involvement with Americans for Prosperity, where I took on the Georgia legislature, advocating for changes in the Certificate of Need law. Leading such initiatives requires vision and the ability to communicate the idea effectively. Drafting an 803-page government document, managing media interactions, and consistently liaising with politicians exemplified the synergy of leadership and communication. My aim was clear: to effect a tangible change in Georgia law and amplify the voice of the marginalized.
Resilience: Being a mother to three young boys with distinct challenges has been a testament to my resilience. My eldest son's Autism and my foster child's battle with cystic fibrosis have posed situations where giving up might seem like the easier path. Yet, with every challenge, my resilience has been my compass, ensuring that I stay the course for my sake and those who rely on me.
Unselfishness: The essence of my advocacy work and the rigors of motherhood underscore the spirit of selflessness. My fight for better maternal care in Georgia wasn't about personal glory but stemmed from hearing heart-wrenching stories of women who faced hardships. Furthermore, embracing a foster child with a significant medical condition showcases the depth of my commitment to giving without expecting.
Focused/Determined: The journey through higher education, coupled with familial responsibilities and advocacy, has demanded unwavering focus and determination. Even on the most challenging days, when my son's therapy clashed with lectures or my foster son's medical needs seemed overwhelming, my determination never wavered. Bolstered by the support of my institution and peers, I remain unwaveringly focused on my academic and personal objectives.
Strong Work Ethic: Balancing roles as a mother, student, small business owner and managing two full-time jobs exemplify a relentless work ethic. My passion for changing the maternal care landscape in Georgia, combined with my familial responsibilities, constantly pushes me to give my best, showcasing my commitment and dedication.
My goals stretch beyond the immediate. While the aspiration to establish the Augusta Birth Center stands prominent, my larger vision encompasses transforming maternal care nationwide. This endeavor is profoundly personal and inspired by the challenges and triumphs I've witnessed firsthand. I'm pursuing a degree to equip myself with the knowledge and skills needed for systemic change.
Leadership is not just about leading; it's about serving. It is the ability to inspire, uplift, and pave the way for positive change. Leadership is reflected in our actions, the decisions we make, the challenges we embrace, and the sacrifices we're willing to make for the greater good. Having a partner who has served in the US Navy, I've seen the epitome of leadership and sacrifice up close. My husband's dedication to the nation and our family reinforces my belief in the profound impact of selfless leadership.
In conclusion, my journey, marked by its unique challenges and victories, encapsulates the essence of leadership, communication, resilience, selflessness, focus, determination, and work ethic. Pursuing this scholarship is about financial support and aligning with values that resonate deeply with my life's journey.
Empowering Motherhood Scholarship
Embarking on the journey of higher education is a formidable endeavor for anyone. Yet, as a mother to three young boys, each with unique needs, my decision to pursue a college degree is laced with layers of motivation, challenges, and deep-seated aspirations. Seeking knowledge is not just for personal growth but serves as a beacon for my family's future, demonstrating that challenges can be overcome with determination, resilience, and a robust support system.
The motivation to stride towards higher education emerged from a profound desire to provide my children with a life full of opportunities. As a mother, my heart swells with dreams, not just for myself but for my children. My oldest son, with Autism, reminds me daily that the world is diverse in its experiences. Navigating the world with him has taught me the importance of patience, understanding, and the value of individualized care and attention. Meanwhile, my foster son battles with cystic fibrosis. Even in the face of such a formidable challenge, the strength he showcases is a testament to the human spirit's resilience. Their challenges reiterate the need for informed, compassionate advocacy – a torch I wish to bear.
But why higher education? Wouldn't finding a job and working my way up the corporate ladder be easier? The answer lies in the belief that knowledge equips us with tools to effect change. For my children, especially my oldest, I aim to be more than just a mother; I strive to be a role model. I want them to see that we can rise even when faced with immense challenges.
The journey, though, has its challenges. Juggling the responsibilities of motherhood and academic pursuits often feels impossible.
There are days when exhaustion takes over, days when balancing my son's therapy appointments with college lectures seems nearly impossible, and moments when the weight of my foster son's medical needs casts a shadow over my academic ambitions. It is in these moments of doubt that I find my strength. My children serve as my daily inspiration.
My educational institution has been a pillar, accommodating and understanding my unique situation. Their unwavering support reiterates the idea that anything is possible with the right kind of backing. My classmates, too, have been instrumental. Their constant reminders of my unique journey, admiration for my persistence, and encouragement, especially during moments of doubt, have been invaluable. Their faith in me, emphasizing that I am the only one in our program balancing the joys and tribulations of motherhood with three young children, has been a constant source of motivation. They remind me of how far I've come and fuel my drive to go even further.
To any mother contemplating higher education, I say this: the path is strewn with challenges, but the tangible and intangible rewards are monumental. Not only does it pave the way for a brighter future for ourselves, but it also sets a precedent for our children, showcasing the values of hard work, perseverance, and the pursuit of dreams, no matter the challenges.
In conclusion, my journey as a mother striving for a college degree is emblematic of the lengths to which a parent will go to ensure a promising future for their children. The challenges, though many, are surmountable, especially with the support of a robust community. This scholarship would be another pillar of support, aiding me in my quest for knowledge, enabling me to better advocate for my children and all those who need a voice, and serving as a testament to mothers everywhere that their dreams are valid and achievable.
Pratibha Pandey Merit-Based Scholarship
Leadership is more than a position; it's an enduring commitment to bringing about change, even in adversity. My journey as a leader and advocate in the healthcare realm has been anything but easy, yet the challenges I've encountered have only intensified my resolve to make a difference.
One of my most pivotal leadership roles has been with Americans for Prosperity, where I have become an active voice in challenging the status quo. My mission? To alter the Georgia legislature and push the certificate of need law out of the picture. This antiquated law inhibits the establishment of healthcare facilities and, consequently, limits the accessibility to essential healthcare for many, particularly in maternal care.
The genesis of my commitment to this cause is deeply personal. It started with my own experiences with childbirth and was further fueled by the heartbreaking stories of other women—some who faced dire hardships, others who were victims of medical malpractice, and, tragically, families who grieved the loss of a loved one. Each story was a somber reminder of the urgent need for change in our healthcare system.
Championing this cause was a challenging endeavor. From gathering over 500 support letters to penning an exhaustive 803-page government document, from fronting media interviews to relentless correspondence with politicians, every step was a testament to my tenacity and dedication. As if this monumental task wasn't enough, I managed these responsibilities while juggling my roles as a mother, a student aiming for academic excellence, a small business owner, and working two full-time jobs. My educational pursuits, particularly maintaining my GPA, were integral. My engagement with the broader socio-political landscape continuously underscored the importance of nursing professionals stepping into political and legal arenas to advocate for rights that directly affect patient care.
Despite the magnitude of the task and the multifaceted challenges I faced, my determination has already yielded results. My ongoing collaboration with a nonprofit law firm has paved the way for two crucial lawsuits against the state. More importantly, these endeavors aim for legislative changes to increase healthcare access in underserved, low-income areas. The ultimate dream? Establishing a nonprofit, freestanding birth center in Augusta is a beacon of hope for countless women.
Leadership is more than just leading a team; it's about identifying areas that require change, stepping into the void, and relentlessly pursuing that change. While my journey is far from over, I am driven by the knowledge that every step forward is a stride towards a future where quality healthcare isn't a luxury but a fundamental right.
How have I maintained this delicate balance between extracurricular advocacy work and academic commitments? The answer lies in a deeply ingrained work ethic, a passion for my cause, and a keen sense of time management. Prioritizing tasks, setting clear goals, and ensuring self-care have been vital. But more than any strategy, the knowledge of the potential impact of my efforts propels me forward. Each time I think of the women and families that would benefit from improved healthcare policies, I am reminded of the reason I embarked on this journey in the first place.
In conclusion, leadership is a dynamic interplay of passion, commitment, and resilience. My experiences in the healthcare advocacy space have not only shaped my worldview but also underscored the significance of proactive involvement in shaping policies. As I continue my academic and professional journey, this scholarship would be instrumental in aiding my mission. Supporting my education and advocacy work would be an investment in a brighter, healthier future for countless women in Georgia and beyond.
Julie Holloway Bryant Memorial Scholarship
Being bilingual has been a part of who I am for as long as I can remember. Fluency in French and English has granted me the privilege of navigating between two worlds, cultures, and ways of thinking. Reflecting on my academic journey, I can confirm that being bilingual brings advantages and challenges.
French is my language. Growing up, I was immersed in a vibrant culture filled with art, literature, and a unique perspective on life. As a child, I often felt like a bridge connecting two realms: the rich traditions of the French language and the ever-evolving English-speaking community.
One of the benefits that come with being bilingual is flexibility. Accessing two languages has always allowed me to view situations from different angles. This linguistic duality has sharpened my problem-solving abilities, as I can process information and formulate responses in two languages. This cognitive agility proved invaluable throughout my journey in analyzing issues and developing innovative solutions.
Additionally, being bilingual has allowed me to embrace cultural experiences and foster meaningful relationships.
Being able to connect with groups has not only expanded my social horizons but has also played a crucial role in my professional aspirations. Through engaging with communities in Augusta, Georgia, I have come to deeply appreciate cultures and grasp different groups' unique healthcare and societal needs. Understanding diversity is essential in fields like nursing and healthcare, where considering patients' cultural backgrounds leads to compassionate care.
However, being fluent in two languages does come with its challenges. Balancing proficiency in both languages requires effort since one can often dominate life. Sometimes, I need help finding the word or expression, as direct translations sometimes capture the essence of what I want to convey. Additionally, there's a sense of responsibility to nurture and maintain both languages so that neither diminishes over time.
My recent pursuit of learning American Sign Language (ASL) has further languages has impacted my life. My foster son is hard of hearing, and bridging our communication gap has become a priority. My son, who is nine months old, represents a chapter in my linguistic and emotional journey.
ASL is not a tool. It represents my love and commitment to ensuring that my son never feels alone or misunderstood.
My plans after graduating are closely connected to my journey with language and the community in Augusta. The diversity and challenges I have witnessed here have solidified my decision to pursue education in nursing and midwifery. My goal is to establish a profit birthing center that addresses the evident gaps in healthcare and provides top-quality medical services to those who need them.
This vision is an objective and a personal mission shaped by my experiences and linguistic background. Being bilingual has taught me the power of connection, the importance of understanding, and the beauty of perspectives. In healthcare, where trust and empathy are crucial, my bilingual abilities will enable me to connect with patients, offering them care beyond language barriers.
In conclusion, my bilingual journey and my experiences in Augusta have influenced my aspirations and dreams. As I eagerly anticipate graduation and what lies ahead, I am grateful for my abilities. I am dedicated to utilizing these skills to make an impact by ensuring that everyone—regardless of their background or language—receives the care and support they deserve.
Mental Health Scholarship for Women
In today's fast-paced academic environment, the symbiotic relationship between mental health and academic performance cannot be overemphasized. The pressures and challenges students face, particularly in rigorous programs like nursing school, can have a profound impact on their mental well-being. This, in turn, influences both their academic achievements and personal lives.
During my nursing studies, as the intensity of the curriculum ramped up, I observed a direct correlation between my physical health and mental stamina. Initially, the stress of juggling between demanding lectures, clinical hours, and personal responsibilities took a toll on my physical health. But when I integrated a regular running routine with a friend, the subsequent benefits were transformative. The rush of endorphins, the sensation of the wind against my skin, and the camaraderie with my running partner imparted a sense of calm and rejuvenation. Not only did this help in mitigating stress, but it also enhanced my focus, enabling me to grasp complex concepts and improve test performances.
This personal revelation underscores the importance of physical health as a bedrock for mental wellness and, by extension, academic success. Engaging in physical activities, be it jogging, yoga, or team sports, provides a much-needed respite from the rigors of academic life. More importantly, it equips students with the mental agility required to navigate the challenges of their studies.
Additionally, the social dimensions of group exercises or team sports play an indispensable role in bolstering mental health. The camaraderie, sense of community, and the shared sense of accomplishment can be immensely therapeutic. During trying times, these bonds offer solace and support, reaffirming that one is not alone in their journey.
However, while physical activity is a vital ingredient for sound mental health, it's equally essential to recognize when to seek professional intervention. I vividly recall a period during my nursing school when the weight of my responsibilities led to burnout. That phase was a stark deviation from my usual self, where days seemed bleak, and motivation was scanty. Recognizing these symptoms was crucial. I sought the guidance of a school therapist, which became a turning point in my academic journey. With therapy and an emphasis on self-care, I regained my equilibrium.
Schools and academic institutions typically offer an array of resources, including counseling and therapy services, to help students grapple with mental health challenges. It is imperative to leverage these resources and foster an environment where discussing mental health is neither taboo nor stigmatized. Being proactive, acknowledging one's vulnerabilities, and seeking timely intervention can often avert more profound crises down the road.
Beyond institutional support, creating personal routines that emphasize mental well-being is paramount. Setting aside dedicated "me-time," whether it's reading a book, painting, or simply indulging in introspection, can have pronounced effects on one's emotional health. This form of self-care acts as a buffer, cushioning the impacts of external stressors.
In conclusion, while the interplay between mental health and academic performance is intricate, a few guiding principles emerge. First, the importance of physical health as a cornerstone for mental well-being cannot be overstated. Second, recognizing signs of distress and seeking timely professional help is vital. And finally, cultivating personal routines that prioritize mental health, even amidst the whirlwind of academic commitments, can be the difference between mere survival and genuine thriving. My journey through nursing school, with its myriad challenges and triumphs, stands testament to the enduring power of these principles.

The mosaic of our origins frequently molds the contours of our dreams and endeavors. For me, my Lithuanian heritage stands as a cornerstone in the edifice of my values, ambitions, and motivations. It has fortified my commitment to community service, advocacy, and sustainable development, drawing parallels to the resilient spirit of the Lithuanian people.
As a first-generation immigrant, my journey has been profoundly influenced by the hardworking ethos inherent in Lithuanian culture. Stories of my ancestors, who endured both political and socio-economic upheavals, constantly reverberated through my childhood. Their resilience and unwavering spirit, which is reflective of the broader Lithuanian community, has always been a source of inspiration for me. Their ability to persevere and thrive in the face of adversity instilled in me a relentless determination and the importance of discipline, as exemplified in my continuous fight for improved healthcare in Georgia.
Growing up, my family faced numerous challenges, including supporting my sister with severe autism and my son with special needs. Such experiences underscored the importance of compassionate care and community support, attributes that resonate with the communal ethos of Lithuanian society. Throughout these challenges, it was the resilience and determination drawn from my Lithuanian background that propelled me forward, making me a staunch advocate for improving healthcare outcomes, especially for women in Georgia.
Another facet of my Lithuanian heritage that I deeply cherish is the emphasis on community solidarity and collective upliftment. This principle, deeply rooted in our national history, influenced my endeavors in advocating for systemic changes in healthcare, particularly in the areas most affected by disparities. Lithuania's enduring struggle for independence has taught me the significance of taking collective action to bring about meaningful change. This spirit is evident in my mission to change Georgia's laws, opening up opportunities for birth centers to operate without unnecessary bureaucratic hindrances.
Moreover, my heritage's emphasis on education and self-betterment can be seen in my drive to empower young women in their health and well-being. The Lithuanian culture, with its rich literary and intellectual history, has always prioritized the spread of knowledge. Taking a cue from this, I have consistently strived to enlighten young women about their bodies and healthcare options, which is instrumental for improved healthcare outcomes.
Furthermore, sustainability and environmental care have always been intrinsic to the Lithuanian ethos. The lush landscapes, pristine lakes, and dense forests of Lithuania symbolize the nation's bond with nature. My passion for promoting sustainable practices, reducing carbon footprints, and participating in community initiatives finds its roots in this intrinsic connection to the environment that my Lithuanian heritage extols.
Lastly, the value of hard work is a lesson I directly attribute to my Lithuanian lineage. Lithuania's history is punctuated with moments of grit and determination, be it in the arts, science, or the fight for national identity. This principle has been my beacon, guiding me through professional challenges, academic rigors as a nursing student, and personal setbacks.
In conclusion, my Lithuanian heritage is not just a backdrop to my life; it's the very stage upon which my character and aspirations have been shaped. It has imbued me with resilience, determination, community spirit, and an enduring love for knowledge and sustainability. As I strive for a scholarship to further my education and advocacy, I carry forth the legacy and lessons of my Lithuanian ancestors, aiming to make a significant, positive impact on society.

Pursuing higher education is my testament to breaking barriers as a first-generation student. When I arrived in the United States at 20, I had little more than determination and a vision. Today, as a mother to three, owner of two small enterprises, and an aspiring nurse, that vision has broadened but remains rooted in the same core beliefs: growth, determination, and making a positive difference.
My early life was no ordinary journey. Taking care of my sister, who was diagnosed with severe autism, became a pivotal aspect of my childhood. Those years were instrumental, infusing in me a profound sense of compassion.
They also introduced me to the transformative power of dedicated medical professionals. This personal experience solidified my aspiration to delve into the world of nursing—a field where passion meets purpose.
Embarking on this journey as a first-generation student has involved extensive preparation. I've developed an unwavering discipline that sees me rising at 4 AM, managing family meals, handling business commitments, and still finding time for classes and coursework. Amidst the rigors of daily life, I've meticulously carved out time to prepare myself academically and mentally for college. I've leaned into my challenges, drawing strength from them. Overcoming postpartum depression and holding the family together during testing times has equipped me with resilience, a quality I believe will be invaluable in my college journey.
My advocacy work, particularly my passion for foster parenting and adoption in Georgia, reflects my commitment to community upliftment. I've consistently used my platform to champion causes close to my heart, such as women's health, showcasing my ability to multitask and my determination to change.
The allure of higher education for me isn't merely academic or career progression; it's deeply personal. It symbolizes a bridge from the past, a young immigrant with a hundred-dollar bill and big dreams, to the present, a determined individual making those dreams tangible. College represents a space where I can further equip myself with tools and knowledge to amplify my impact as a professional and community advocate.
Moreover, this journey is for more than just me. As a mother, my pursuit of higher education serves as a beacon for my children. It's a tangible lesson demonstrating the value of commitment, the rewards of hard work, and the importance of continually evolving. It underscores the message that regardless of one's starting point, with perseverance, there's no summit too high.
My pursuit of higher education reflects my commitment to personal growth, my aspiration to give back to the community, and my desire to set a precedent for future generations. As a first-generation student, I carry the weight of my past experiences, the hopes of my family, and the ambition to chart new horizons, using the power of education as my compass.

Topic: Hippias Major by Plato
Paragraph:
"Soc.: But or the Lacedaemonians, as you say, it is more beneficial to be educated in your education, which is foreign, than in the local education.
Hip.: Yes, and what I say is true.
Soc.: And do you say this also, Hippias, that beneficial things are more lawful?
Hip.: Yes, I said so.
Soc.: Then, according to what you say, it is more lawful for the sons of the Lacedaemonians to be educated by Hippias and less lawful for them to be educated by their fathers, if in reality they will be more benefited by you.
Hip.: But certainly they will be benefited, Socrates.
Soc.: Then the Lacedaemonians in not giving you money and entrusting their sons to you, act contrary to law.
Hip.: I agree to that ; for you seem to be making your argument in my favour, and there is no need of my opposing it.
Soc.: Then my friends, we find that the Lacedaemonians are law-breakers, and that too in the most important affairs — they who are regarded as the most law-abiding of men. But then, for Heaven's sake, Hippias, what sort of discourses are those for which they applaud you and which they enjoy hearing? Or are they evidently those which you understand most admirably, those about the stars and the phenomena of the heavens?
Hip.: Not in the least ; they won't even endure those.
Soc.: But they enjoy hearing about geometry?
Hip.: Not at all, since one might say that many of them do not even know how to count.
Soc.: Then they are far from enduring a lecture by you on the processes of thought."
In Plato's "Hippias Major," Socrates unravels a contentious debate: Can foreign education, touted as superior by Hippias, be more lawful than local traditions? Through sharp dialectic, Socrates critiques the hollow facade of societal norms.
We often encounter profound dissections of societal structures, beliefs, and norms in Plato's dialogues. The "Hippias Major" is no exception. Here, Plato crafts a meticulous conversation between Socrates and Hippias, shedding light on an age-old tension between foreign methodologies and indigenous systems. When Hippias confidently claims the supremacy of his foreign education, Socrates, with his characteristic probing, questions the very fabric of this assertion.
The Lacedaemonians, celebrated for their unwavering commitment to order and discipline, find themselves in the crosshairs of Socratic scrutiny. It's a high-stakes arena where Socrates, the master dialectician, grapples with their hesitancy to adopt Hippias' avant-garde educational tenets. Hippias stands firm, asserting the superiority and legal validity of his teachings. Yet, Socrates, ever the strategist, veers from a direct offensive.
Enter astronomy and geometry, disciplines that aren't mere subjects but paradigms demanding rigorous intellectual engagement. Through this, Socrates isn't merely pointing out their educational gaps; he's unveiling a larger narrative. It's a tale of a society entangled in a web of its own making; one spun from traditional threads so tight that it risks suffocating innovation and novel thought. This isn't a casual observation but a profound indictment. The Lacedaemonians' failure to grasp such profound subjects becomes emblematic of their deeper malaise: a preference for the familiar facade over the discomfort of profound exploration.
But what's truly intriguing is Socrates' method. He doesn't bulldoze; he insinuates. He lets the glaring gaps in the Lacedaemonians' knowledge reveal themselves, exposing a lack of educational breadth and a short-sighted society. It's a stark contrast between superficiality and substance. In Socrates' chessboard, the Lacedaemonians, despite their renowned discipline, are mere pawns, unwittingly revealing their myopia and reluctance to venture beyond the comfort of the known. This Socratic spotlight is a timeless reminder: Societies prioritizing veneer over veracity risk stagnating in the shallows while depth and innovation lie unexplored.
Fast forward to contemporary times, and one can discern echoes of this ancient dialogue in Georgia's ongoing debate on school choice. Like the Lacedaemonians, the state stands at a crossroads, grappling with conventional educational structures and newer, perhaps more adaptive methods. The campaign for diverse educational approaches resonates with Hippias' promotion of foreign education. And just like the Lacedaemonians, there's palpable reluctance in certain quarters to fully embrace these modern strategies, signaling an inherent fear of deviation from tradition.
In his literary craftsmanship, Plato doesn't merely present ideas; he engineers reflections, pushing the audience into a space of introspection. This dynamic, the act of holding society up to its mirror, forms the crux of the narrative. This mirror doesn't just replicate the present but magnifies the fault lines, those deep-seated prejudices and uncritically accepted beliefs that society imbibes, often without introspection.
The norms and conventions become its anchor in a world that resists upheaval. They provide stability and a sense of continuity. But what if these anchors weigh us down, stifling progress and innovation? Plato prompts this very introspection. Through the cunning wit of Socrates, he embarks on a quest not just for truth but for utility. It's not enough that a convention exists; it must justify its existence. The onus of proof, Plato suggests, rests not with the challenger but with the way itself.
If left unchecked, these societal habits ossify into rigid doctrines that shun change, equating tradition with righteousness. But Plato's challenge is audacious. He forces society to evaluate whether these traditions and norms have morphed into crutches, inhibiting genuine progress. Are they the guardians of societal wisdom, or have they become barriers to fresh, transformative thought?
Moreover, Plato pushes the boundaries further, suggesting that passive acceptance is a form of collaboration. More is needed to exist within the framework; there's a moral imperative to actively evaluate, refine, and dismantle if necessary. By advocating this active engagement, Plato shifts the paradigm from passive adherence to proactive evaluation. Under this Socratic scrutiny, every convention every norm must stand trial, its worth interrogated, its purpose defined. This is the essence of Plato's call: a society that doesn't just function but perpetually refines, ensuring that its norms and values aren't just inherited heirlooms but chosen tools for a collective betterment.
Reflecting this ancient philosophy with contemporary educational debates, Georgia's move towards school choice isn't just an administrative decision; it's a philosophical shift. It challenges the accepted norms of education, encouraging a more tailored approach to cater to individual needs. Plato's narrative serves as a timely reminder in this context. It nudges us to think critically about the structures we uphold, pushing us to prioritize genuine understanding and adaptability over mere compliance to established norms.
In conclusion, while separated by centuries, the fundamental issues Plato raises in "Hippias Major" find relevance in today's educational debates. Both epochs present societies at a crossroads, challenging them to evaluate the essence of their values, traditions, and norms in pursuing genuine knowledge and progress.
Diverse Abilities Scholarship
Navigating life's challenges has been an enlightening journey that has molded me into who I am today. From my immigration from the UK to the US with just a mere $100 to establishing two businesses and advocating for children with special needs, my experiences have taught me the importance of perseverance, empathy, and ambition.
My dream career is deeply rooted in personal experience – to become a specialized nurse-midwife. The extraordinary care I received during my 52-hour labor was not only a beacon of hope during my darkest moments but also a profound realization. I aspire to be that pillar of strength and care for other women, ensuring they have a safe and empowered birthing experience.
However, my journey has been far from linear. For over 30 years, I grappled with the challenges of undiagnosed ADHD and dyslexia. The societal misconceptions associated with these disabilities further compounded my struggles. But, much like my determination to raise $2 million for a women's health institute or my drive to bring about legislative changes in Georgia for birth centers, I'm driven to overcome any barriers in my path. Unfortunately, certain biases persist, making medications for conditions like mine taboo in several nursing schools.
In my dream job, I want to provide excellent healthcare and be a voice for change. The lack of midwives in the US is a glaring gap that I intend to bridge. Studies underscore midwives' pivotal role in enhancing maternal and infant health outcomes. By specializing in midwifery, I envision a future where every woman, irrespective of her socio-economic status, has access to top-notch prenatal and postnatal care.
Further strengthening my passion for healthcare is the firsthand experience of childbirth complexities, from a challenging emergency c-section to a victorious VBAC. My family's decision to adopt a child with cystic fibrosis and deafness also underscored the significance of compassionate nursing. These personal encounters fueled my determination to join the healthcare sector and imparted lessons on the unparalleled power of compassion.
Yet, as I strive to make a mark in nursing, it's impossible to ignore broader societal issues. As an advocate for women's rights and childbirth options, I'm acutely aware of the disparities in our healthcare system. I want to use my position to champion reforms that ensure healthcare access for all, a right that should be uncompromised.
Furthermore, the transition from education to the workforce for students with disabilities remains fraught with challenges, ranging from societal biases to a lack of ample resources. The Diverse Abilities Scholarship's ethos resonates deeply with my experiences and aspirations. By providing financial support, it aims to empower students like me to surmount these challenges, celebrating the unique talents we bring to the table.
My dream job isn't just a career; it's a mission. It's about bridging healthcare disparities, advocating for societal reforms, and championing the rights of those often overlooked. As I juggle the myriad roles of being a student, mother, business owner, and advocate, waking up at 4 AM every day, I'm continually driven by one thing: impact. This drive makes me an ideal candidate for the Diverse Abilities Scholarship.
In my journey ahead, I'm guided by ambition, powered by resilience, and driven by the desire to make an indelible impact. My dream job isn't just about wearing the nurse's white coat; it's about donning the cape of a changemaker. And with the support of this scholarship, I'm one step closer to turning that dream into a reality.
Our Destiny Our Future Scholarship
To make a positive impact on the world, my vision stems from the interwoven tapestry of my unique experiences: as an immigrant, a mother, a foster parent to special needs babies, a wife of a dedicated veteran, and a decade-long journey as a labor and delivery doula. Drawing from these decisive moments, I am driven to be an advocate for women during the profoundly transformative phase of childbirth and motherhood.
My journey in the medical realm started with nursing school, an endeavor I initially perceived as a way to build a stable foundation for my family in our adopted homeland. However, the more I immersed myself, the more I found a vocation. The incredible science and anatomy of pregnancy fascinated me, especially having personally experienced the wonders of motherhood.
But the driving force behind my passion extends beyond just academic knowledge. My role as a doula allowed me to personally engage with childbirth's emotions, challenges, and beauty. In this role, I've provided comfort, encouragement, and support to numerous expectant mothers. Through this intimate involvement, I deeply understood the necessity of compassionate, well-informed care during pregnancy and childbirth. Being a foster parent to special needs babies further intensified my commitment. These children, often from mothers unable to provide for them for various reasons, emphasized the dire need for comprehensive women's healthcare, particularly for underserved communities.
My husband's selfless service to our nation also shaped my worldview, reinforcing the idea of being a pillar of support for the vulnerable. Unfortunately, Georgia, which I now call home, boasts distressing maternal mortality rates. I'm inspired to make a change with the knowledge that many of these deaths could be avoidable with improved care and facilities. I envision a women's healthcare center that reimagines the experience for expectant mothers: a sanctuary where every individual feels valued, respected, and nurtured. However, this vision isn't limited to mere physical comforts.
I aim to address the underlying systemic issues, such as revisiting and improving healthcare laws and regulations, ensuring more accessible access to care for those in underserved areas, and reshaping policies related to women's health in Georgia. As an immigrant, I'm acutely aware of the obstacles in navigating unfamiliar terrains, accentuating the significance of having strong advocates. Working as a PCT on the labor and delivery floor has shown me the monumental difference that empathy and compassionate care can make.
The essence of my mission is not merely to facilitate childbirth but to offer women hope, comfort, and empowerment during this critical juncture in their lives. I am preparing for the MCAT, anticipating my next chapter in medical school.
All the moments of my life, be it of sorrow or joy, guide my path forward. Medicine represents an avenue to give back, uplift, and create enduring change. To echo Mahatma Gandhi, we discover our true selves by serving others. Through my endeavors in the medical profession, I aspire to channel my experiences and passion for fostering healing, instilling hope, and paving the way for a brighter tomorrow for all mothers in Georgia, thus positively impacting the world.

As a mother, immigrant, and veteran's wife, my transformative journey from my homeland to Georgia's delivery wards ignited a profound passion to advocate for women during childbirth.
My path into the medical world began with my enrollment in nursing school. This was a step influenced both by personal and professional reasons. As an immigrant, I saw it as an opportunity to build a stable foundation for my family in our new homeland. However, as I delved deeper into the subject, my academic curiosity became a vocation. I found myself entranced by the intricate science and anatomy behind pregnancy. The miracle of childbirth and all its accompanying challenges resonated deeply with my own experiences as a mother.
It wasn't just academic knowledge that fuelled this passion. My decade as a labor and delivery doula gave me an intimate understanding of the trials and triumphs of expectant mothers. I've held hands, wiped brows, and whispered words of encouragement to countless women. Through this, I've recognized the profound importance of compassionate and informed care during pregnancy and childbirth.
Being a foster parent to special needs babies further deepened my resolve. Many of these children came from mothers who, due to various circumstances, could not provide for them. Their stories highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive women's healthcare, especially for marginalized communities. Thus, the dream of becoming an OBGYN was born.
Georgia, my adopted home, has alarming maternal mortality rates. This statistic haunts me, especially knowing many of these deaths could be prevented with better care and facilities. My vision is clear: I aspire to open a women's healthcare center that redefines how we treat our expectant mothers. Imagine a place where women are greeted with plush robes and soothing cups of tea, where care is centered around respect, consent, and individualized attention rather than cold medical procedures. A sanctuary where every mother feels valued, heard, and cared for.
Yet, beyond the tangible amenities, my primary goal is to address the deeper systemic issues at play. This means challenging the current laws and regulations to allow for more OBGYN facilities. It means advocating for better access to care, especially for women from lower-income or rural areas, who often have the most limited resources. With my background as an immigrant, I understand the challenges of navigating unfamiliar systems and the importance of having advocates in one's corner. My mission, therefore, is not just about better facilities but about reshaping the narrative and policies surrounding women's health in Georgia.
In my current role as a PCT on the labor and delivery floor, I've seen firsthand the difference that compassionate care can make. It's not just about delivering babies; it's about providing women hope, comfort, and empowerment at a pivotal moment in their lives.
To achieve this dream, I've begun my journey with rigorous MCAT preparations, and soon, I'll step into the world of medical school. My experiences – as a doula, foster parent, immigrant, and wife – have all culminated. I carry each story, each tear, and each moment of joy with me as I embark on this path. Through medicine, I see an opportunity to give back, uplift, and, most importantly, make a lasting difference.
In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." Through my career in the medical field, I hope to find that version of myself - one that brings healing, hope, and a brighter future for all mothers in Georgia.

Life has a way of teaching us resilience, often presenting challenges that demand our innermost strength, grit, and determination. As a first-generation college student and an adult learner returning to school after the birth of my three wonderful boys, my journey to becoming a nurse has been far from traditional. Balancing full-time nursing studies with the responsibilities of being a mother of three, foster parenting, and working full-time has required an unparalleled level of resilience. Yet, what fuels this resilience is my unwavering passion to uplift others from underrepresented communities.
Growing up, I was no stranger to the challenges faced by families in economically disadvantaged areas. This reality not only solidified my drive to change it but also laid the foundation for my foster parent advocacy work. Through this role, I’ve been tirelessly working towards finding more homes for children, particularly those with special needs, ensuring they receive love, care, and the stability they deserve.
With an already overflowing plate, I embarked on a project close to my heart - establishing a birth center in an economically disadvantaged area. As someone enchanted by nursing and its alignment with midwifery, I've seen the transformative power of proper birthing services. Many women, unfortunately, lack access to these vital services. My birth center aims to address this by offering a wide range of resources such as mental health services, educational programs, and even a closet filled with maternity clothes. By providing newborns with a strong start in life, we're setting the stage for them to break free from the cycle of poverty, leading them to a brighter future filled with opportunities.
Nursing and midwifery resonate deeply with my own experiences. I’ve been through the intense process of childbirth, including a harrowing emergency c-section and later, a successful VBAC. These experiences cemented my appreciation for the immense role that nurses play during such pivotal moments. Moreover, adopting a child with cystic fibrosis and deafness amplified my respect for the compassionate side of nursing. Witnessing the level of care he received reaffirmed my determination to offer the same to others.
As a staunch advocate for improved birth services, I've been at the forefront of legal battles in Georgia, striving to create a more inclusive space for birth centers. Additionally, I've been actively involved in two lawsuits against the state, all in a bid to amplify healthcare access in low-income areas. These endeavors provide me with invaluable insights into the intricacies of the healthcare system and underscore the necessity for reforms.
Georgia's Infant and Maternal mortality rates are alarmingly high, and Augusta, in particular, has rates below that of Syria and Cuba. The Augusta Birth Center aims to address this crisis by providing a state-of-the-art facility with the latest maternal practices, patient-centric processes, and strong connections to local medical facilities. By opening the center in one of Augusta's most economically challenged areas, we can offer low- to no-cost healthcare and mental health therapy to women who would otherwise be unable to access these vital services.
In conclusion, my life might seem like an endless juggling act, but it's a chosen path driven by passion. I’m determined to use my nursing degree to not only care for others but to also amplify access to critical services, especially for those in underrepresented communities. Through my efforts in midwifery, advocacy, and healthcare reform, I envision a world where every individual, regardless of their background, has an equal shot at a healthy and prosperous life.

Spending the last ten years in Georgia, I've witnessed firsthand maternal and mental health challenges. My intimate connection to my home state makes me acutely aware of our dire standing in Infant and Maternal mortality rates. Georgia is rated the worst in Maternal Mortality in the USA. Part of this is due to the lack of postpartum mental health support. I noticed this myself when I struggled with postpartum depression and anxiety. There was no one I could turn to for help.
This connection to my community and my commitment to public health and mental well-being have profoundly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations.
The struggle for mental health awareness and care is more than a professional pursuit for me. It has become an integral part of my personal growth and development. It is my sole reason for going back to school to pursue nursing.
Having seen the impact of undiagnosed and untreated mental health conditions on so many around me, I believe mental health care should be a fundamental human right, not a luxury. This belief is cemented in my reason to open the Augusta Birth Center after finishing my degree.
As a member of the team founding the Augusta Birth Center, I am immensely proud of the strides we are making to tackle the maternal mental health crisis. Our mission is imperative in a region like Augusta, which unfortunately ranks below Syria and Cuba in infant and maternal mortality. Our center embodies my belief in the transformative power of holistic health care – one that integrates physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.
Augusta Birth Center is bridging the gaping health equity chasm in our community by offering essential services ranging from mental health counseling to maternity care. The fact that we have mental health counseling within the same facility means that we are removing barriers to access, especially for women whom the idea of seeking therapy might otherwise daunt. Our flexible cost structure ensures that finances will always encourage everyone to seek essential care.
Relationships lie at the heart of the work we do. Pediatricians often bear the brunt of mental health checks on mothers in traditional settings. But with our integrated approach, we build rapport with each patient, ensuring they receive the mental health support they need. Moreover, our group support meetings allow us to engage with diverse community sections, emphasizing that mental health is a collective concern that requires collaborative solutions.
The next chapter in my journey involves leveraging the experience and insights I've gained from my association with the Augusta Birth Center to further my career in the mental health sector. My aspirations extend beyond individual care; I aim to drive systemic changes, ensuring that mental health care is accessible, affordable, and stigma-free.
By supporting my ambitions, you're not just investing in an individual but in a vision for a world where mental health is not an afterthought but an integral part of holistic wellness. Through my career, I hope to usher in this change, starting with communities like Augusta and echoing its global impact.

From the bustling high streets of London to the serene avenues of Georgia, my journey has been one of passion, purpose, and perseverance. As a student traversing the rigors of nursing education, I've always envisioned using my acquired knowledge to impact the community positively. With this spirit, I wish to establish the Augusta Birth Centre, a beacon of hope for mothers and a catalyst for community welfare.
Growing up in the UK, I was privy to the NHS - an institution that caters to the needs of many with its expansive reach and patient-centric care. However, relocating to Georgia presented an alternate narrative, one riddled with healthcare disparities. In this juxtaposition, the need for an establishment like the Augusta Birth Centre became evident and imperative.
Georgia's maternal mortality rates are a stark reminder of many women's challenges. The absence of a dedicated birth center within a large radius of Augusta is more than just a logistical oversight; it's a societal concern. My envisioned business, the Augusta Birth Centre, aims to bridge this gap by providing high-quality maternal care centered around empathy, excellence, and empowerment. The center would not only aid in reducing maternal mortality rates but also in instilling confidence in expectant mothers regarding their health choices.
The welfare enhancement for my community through this business is multi-pronged:
By offering a localized center for maternal care, we eliminate the need for lengthy commutes, making healthcare more accessible.
The center would serve as a hub for knowledge dissemination through educational seminars and prenatal classes, ensuring mothers are well-informed.
We aim to boost the local economy by providing employment opportunities for local healthcare professionals.
Starting this venture requires a systematic approach. Armed with my nursing education, the first step would involve extensive market research. By engaging with local mothers, healthcare professionals, and community leaders, I aim to gather insights to refine the center's offerings. Partnering with local colleges and universities could also foster a robust internship program, aligning the energy of budding healthcare professionals with the center's objectives.
Funding is often the most daunting aspect of any start-up. To this end, I explore grants dedicated to healthcare initiatives and seek angel investors passionate about community upliftment. The adage "It takes a village to raise a child" rings true, and I believe it will take a community to birth this center. Thus, community fundraising and awareness campaigns would be pivotal, not only for funds but also to ensure the center is interwoven into the fabric of Augusta.
Securing an appropriate facility, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, and forging partnerships with medical suppliers would be subsequent steps. However, the true essence of the center would be its people. Hence, a rigorous recruitment process would be in place to ensure that every member, from midwives to administrative staff, shares the center's vision and values.
Navigating through the bureaucratic red tape and fostering collaborations may pose challenges. Yet, as a student who has balanced the intricacies of academia, advocacy, and aspirations, I've cultivated resilience. With the drive to impact and the ambition to innovate, I am committed to turning the Augusta Birth Centre from a dream into a reality.
In conclusion, entrepreneurship isn't about profit margins or business growth. It's about impact. The Augusta Birth Centre is more than a business venture; it's a promise – a promise of better healthcare, informed choices, and community cohesion. As I tread this path, I do so with the hopes and dreams of countless mothers echoing in my steps, urging me forward. This isn't just my journey; it's Augusta's journey towards a brighter, healthier tomorrow.
Abu Omar Halal Scholarship
From my humble beginnings on the cobblestone streets of my UK hometown to my current life in the vibrant communities of Georgia, I have walked a long and challenging path. Now an undergraduate nursing student with a 3.4 GPA, I am also a mother to three beautiful boys. Two of whom have special needs. I am a first-generation college student and a dedicated foster parent. I take pride in being a leader, displaying qualities that motivate others to improve their lives. As someone who prioritizes community service and advocacy, I firmly believe in making a substantial impact on the world through my career.
Raising three boys, especially those who require extra care, I've cultivated resilience and patience that continually reaffirms my commitment to treating everyone with kindness and respect. My journey as a parent has been a cornerstone for my focus on community service. As a foster parent, I've extended this compassion and care beyond my immediate family, taking in children who need stability and love. My current foster baby has cystic fibrosis and is deaf. We plan to adopt him as we can provide him with the best care possible.
Our current foster care care inspired me to start working in foster care advocacy work. I encourage more families to consider foster parenting to provide more children with the support and guidance they deserve.
My career aspirations align deeply with my personal experiences and core values. Georgia's healthcare disparities are not just statistics for me; they're a reality. The state's maternal mortality rates are shockingly worse than those in Syria and Cuba. Given this, I attempted to open the Augusta Birth Center, aiming to offer much-needed maternity care services to women. While my initial efforts were stalled by bureaucratic hurdles and hospitals exploiting legal gray areas, I've enlisted the support of a nonprofit legal firm to continue the fight. Together, we are actively lobbying for state law changes that would make birth centers a viable option and improve healthcare access for all, especially in low-income areas. I still work heavily in this community as a volunteer doula to give women more access to care at birth.
Through my doula work, I'm passionately committed to educational outreach, hosting workshops and informational sessions to empower young women to make informed healthcare choices. In doing so, I aim to break the cycle of ignorance and misinformation that perpetuates health disparities in our communities.
As a first-generation college student, the weight of my family's dreams and aspirations sits comfortably on my shoulders, fueling my relentless pursuit of a better life. My experience embodies the American vision but is also a beacon for others in my community who may feel marginalized or left behind. Through my education and advocacy, I'm making pathways more straightforward for those who wish to contribute to social justice and community improvement.
My life's journey has groomed me into a leader keen on leveraging her skills and experiences for the betterment of the community. From providing quality family life as a mother and foster parent to fighting for just healthcare policies, I am building a multi-faceted approach to community service. This is not merely an aspect of my life; it's the foundation on which I intend to construct my nursing career. My ultimate goal is to change systems from within, breaking down barriers in healthcare access and serving as an example for others to follow. I am committed to being a catalyst for change, inspiring a new generation to join me in making a positive, lasting impact on the world.
International Student Scholarship
Sometimes, being an international student in the States feels like an uphill battle. When I first came here, I was brimming with excitement and enthusiasm. Little did I know, the path could have been smoother than I had imagined.
One of the first challenges was my accent. Yes, I'm from England and Northern Ireland. We all speak English. Wrong! Because of my pronounced accent, I was, somewhat ironically, placed into an "English for foreigners" class during my first semester at college. Talk about a knock to one's confidence.
But the bias didn't stop there. People often made assumptions about my knowledge, especially regarding the United States. While I appreciated the odd history lesson now and then, I didn't need every Tom, Dick, and Harry trying to teach me about the Fourth of July.
However, what hurt the most was the label "lazy immigrant." It's a title so far from the truth it's laughable. While juggling nursing school, I am holding down two jobs, volunteering at a foster parent advocacy agency and looking after my medically special needs foster child alongside my two boys under four. I reckon many could only walk a mile in my shoes with a bit of a stumble.
The job market was another beast entirely. Many a time, I was passed up for jobs in favor of American citizens. I was even told that if I ever hoped to be a successful nurse, I'd have to "lose" my accent, as no one would understand me. It is a shame because my accent has become my best talking point with my older patients during my clinical rotations.
But through all this, my spirit has never waned. My experience and resilience have honed me into a formidable nurse. My background, with its reliance on the metric system, has been a hidden asset. It's even given me the chance to tutor my peers!
Securing the International Student Scholarship would change the game for me. With its financial aid, I could drop one of my jobs. This would give me more time to concentrate on my studies and be more involved in my foster parent advocacy group. There's so much we can do to improve laws and regulations in Georgia. I could also finally have those cherished moments with my children – they're only young once.
I've always been fascinated by nursing, particularly midwifery and pregnancy. This scholarship will help pave my path toward that goal. My goal is to bridge the gap in the lack of midwives in the U.S., a hole I've personally experienced with my emergency c-section and my subsequent VBAC.
Moreover, this scholarship will support my aim to redefine healthcare access, especially in low-income areas. My son's medical conditions have shown me the value of a solid medical team, and it's my mission to ensure that others have that same access. I can focus more on my volunteer work outside of nursing. I am devoting a few hours a week to the cause and would like to do a lot more.
To put it bluntly, this scholarship is more than just financial aid. It's a chance to make a real difference, both in my life and the lives of countless others. I hope you consider me not just as an international student but as someone passionate, dedicated, and ready to make a mark in nursing.
Noble E. Gagucas Nursing Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have been confronted with various challenges, whether physical or mental. However, I never gave up and always found an alternative solution to a problem to get a resolution. As a biological mother to two boys aged 3 and 1, one with autism, my family life has been challenging. I had to become an advocate for my son to get him the services he needed.
Recently, my family fostered a two-month-old boy who is deaf, and we plan to adopt him. He was abandoned and left in a Safe-haven hospital in North Georgia. As his foster parents, we had to push for services for him, and this experience has inspired me to become an advocate in healthcare to get special needs children who fall into the gaps more services. I have since become a volunteer with a foster parent advocacy group to help other parents navigate the foster care system.
My passion for nursing advocacy and improving access to healthcare for underserved communities has led me to pursue a nursing career. As a social justice and political advocate, I am committed to making a difference in my community by advocating for nursing rights and working towards policy changes that benefit patients and healthcare professionals alike.
My family experiences have given me a unique perspective and a desire to help other families struggling to get the care they need. Regardless of their background or circumstances, everyone deserves access to quality healthcare. My primary goal as a nurse is to improve women's healthcare access in Georgia, where maternal mortality rates are among the highest in the country. To achieve this goal, I am pursuing two large-scale lawsuits, attending nursing school full-time, fostering a special needs child, being a mother to three boys, and politically advocating for two law changes through the Georgia House of Representatives.
Juggling multiple responsibilities can be challenging, but I am determined to impact my community and beyond positively. My tenacity and problem-solving skills are essential to achieving my goals. When faced with a complex issue, such as the lack of healthcare options for women in Georgia, I am not afraid to take risks and think outside the box. My compassion and empathy for others make me well-suited for a career as a nurse.
I understand the importance of treating everyone with kindness and respect. As a nurse, I plan to use my advocacy skills to make positive changes in the healthcare industry. I am suing the government to stop local facilities from restricting trade for new healthcare facilities that want to open. Nurses play an essential role in advocating for policies that benefit patients and healthcare professionals. Looking ahead, I am excited about the opportunities to improve access to healthcare for women in Georgia and beyond.
My primary goal is to open birth centers across the state, starting with Augusta, to ensure every woman has access to safe and reliable healthcare. Additionally, as the executive director of a nonprofit organization promoting healthcare for young women, I hope to empower them to take control of their health and well-being.
My experiences have taught me to never give up and always find an alternative solution to a problem to get a resolution. I plan to pursue a nursing career because of my passion for making healthcare more accessible to underserved communities. My unique attributes, including my tenacity, problem-solving skills, and compassion, make me well-suited to impact my community positively. With hard work, dedication, and a willingness to take risks, I can make a difference in the lives of countless patients and their families.
Bald Eagle Scholarship
Sometimes, someone's kindness, wisdom, or guidance can impact us. It can steer us towards a path to reignite our passions or even change how we see things. I had such an experience with Anjili, the owner of the Atlanta Birth Center, where I gave birth to my child. Her unwavering support during my labor and her unshakeable belief in my ability to overcome difficulties inspired me to become a midwife.
I first met Anjili when I was giving birth to my child. Although it didn't go as planned, and I had to be transferred to Atlanta Medical Center, she stayed by my side throughout the process, providing support and reassurance. Her empathy ignited something within me that made me want to pursue a career in midwifery and impact mothers' lives.
After the emergency birth of my child, which was not my plan, Anjili shared some words that will forever hold a special place in my heart.
She mentioned that I could attempt a natural birth with subsequent children and assured me that the outcome of my first labor did not define me as a failure but as someone who displayed bravery by adapting and conquering the challenges presented. Her unwavering faith in overcoming obstacles fueled my determination to pursue a birth for my child.
Throughout the year when the COVID lockdown began in 2020, Anjili consistently checked on me times, offering her support and guidance. If all women could receive the care that Anjili provided me, it would significantly improve our world.
The arrival of my child, a dream brought to life, proved Anjili's influence. Her encouragement and unwavering belief in overcoming challenges helped me discover the strength and resilience needed to conquer the most challenging obstacles. This experience taught me that impossible goals can be achieved with support and an indomitable spirit.
Anjali has had an impact on me, not only influencing my journey but also shaping my aspirations for the future. I have learned lessons from her, such as the significance of empathy, dedication, and passion in pursuing one's dreams. As I strive to establish the Augusta Birth Center, I find inspiration in Anjili's commitment to caring for expectant mothers. I hope that by following her lead, I can make a difference in the lives of women and their families.
One of my aspirations as a thriving nurse is to help bridge the gap caused by the shortage of midwives in the United States. Numerous studies have demonstrated that midwives effectively care for mothers and their babies. Unfortunately, there are currently several midwives to meet the growing demand for their services.
Pursuing a career in nursing specializing in midwifery, I aim to contribute towards expanding quality postnatal care for women. Additionally, I am driven by my passion for advocacy and healthcare reform. Regardless of income or social status, every individual deserves access to quality healthcare as a right. My personal experiences have shown me how limited healthcare access can impact individuals and families, fueling my determination to change.
My journey has been marked by both triumphs and setbacks, teaching me the lesson of perseverance. In the face of challenges, it is imperative that we continue fighting for our beliefs and never lose hope. As we navigate life obstacles, we must remember that with the support of others and our unwavering determination, we possess a force to drive meaningful change.
In conclusion, Anjilis's influence on my life has been truly transformative. Her unwavering support, encouragement, and faith in my abilities have shaped my path. It inspired me to make a difference in the lives of others.
Trees for Tuition Scholarship Fund
As a mother of three lively boys, a nursing student, and a full-time small business owner, my life is full of responsibilities. Every day, I intertwine the lessons I learn in nursing school with the demands of my job, always keeping my family at the core of my heart. This pace, although hectic at times, is driven by my unwavering desire to give my best in every realm of life.
I've had the privilege to stand by countless patients, ensuring they receive medical attention and feel valued and heard. This connection has broadened my horizons, revealing the glaring disparities in healthcare, particularly for economically marginalized women. Their stories of inaccessible essential healthcare have impeded me from instigating change in my community. In Augusta, Georgia, we have a worse maternal mortality rating than Syria and Cuba. One in three black women is more likely to experience obstetrical abuse in our community.
This fact was unacceptable to me. I decided to use my growing expertise in nursing to initiate community health sessions. The core of these sessions revolved around educating women about their health rights and teaching consent over coercion when women are in the room with doctors and nurses. By empowering them with knowledge, I envisioned a future where they and their families would thrive. These sessions weren't merely academic; they became sanctuaries where women shared their experiences, sought advice, and found solidarity.
But my endeavors to uplift my community aren't confined to classrooms or hospitals. Through everyday gestures of compassion, I strive to make a difference. Whether participating in local drives or supporting causes close to our hearts, my family and I continually seek avenues to contribute positively. These seemingly small acts echo a powerful message of community and empathy.
My passion, however, lies deeply intertwined with my commitment to elevating women's healthcare in Georgia. It's a mission that has seen me navigate intricate challenges, from working to establish birthing centers to advocating for equal healthcare access. Despite the numerous obstacles, I remain steadfast in my journey. By fostering collaborations and persistently learning, my goal is to make healthcare not just accessible but equitable for all.
I'm fiercely advocating for legal reforms in Georgia. I'm dedicated to reshaping the legal landscape, allowing birth centers more freedom to operate, and amplifying healthcare access for underprivileged areas. Collaborating with non-profit legal firms and being involved in significant lawsuits against the state exemplify my dedication to this cause.
Furthermore, my personal experiences have etched a unique perspective on healthcare. Being a mother, I've embraced the joys and challenges of childbirth, from undergoing a challenging emergency c-section to celebrating a successful VBAC. These journeys have heightened my appreciation for nurses' crucial role during such pivotal moments. Additionally, adopting a child with cystic fibrosis and deafness has deepened my understanding of compassion in healthcare. Witnessing his extraordinary care propels me to aspire to offer the same level of commitment to my patients.
My vision for a brighter future continues with my college education. It's an ongoing commitment shaped by personal experiences and professional aspirations. I see a world where my contributions, both as a nurse and an advocate, bridge gaps in healthcare, ensuring that no woman is left behind. As I stride ahead, I remain focused on my mission, determined to uplift the healthcare landscape until global rankings no longer undermine the importance of maternal care. The journey is long, but with passion as my compass, I'm ready to make a lasting impact.
Harriett Russell Carr Memorial Scholarship
Balancing the roles of a nursing student, a full-time professional, and a devoted mother of three lively boys has imbued a spirit of excellence that reverberates throughout my life. It's not just about juggling multiple responsibilities but about doing so with passion, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Every day, I'm faced with the challenge of managing lessons from nursing school, meeting the demands of my job, and ensuring I provide the best for my children. This might sound overwhelming, but my commitment to excellence propels me forward. It's about ensuring every patient I interact with as a nursing student feels seen and heard. It's about ensuring every task I take on at work is done to the best of my ability. Most importantly, it's about being present for my boys and nurturing them with love, wisdom, and care.
My definition of excellence extends beyond personal achievement. To me, excellence uplifts those around me, particularly in my community. Witnessing firsthand the disparities in healthcare, especially for women in economically challenged situations, I felt the pressing need to give back. I've seen women in my community grapple with inaccessibility to essential healthcare services, which has fueled my commitment to change.
Giving back is not just an obligation but a privilege. I initiated community health sessions by leveraging my knowledge and skills from nursing school. These sessions are geared towards educating women about their health rights, equipping them with knowledge that can empower them and their families. This initiative was about disseminating information and creating a safe space where women could voice their concerns, share their stories, and seek guidance.
But giving back isn't confined to structured sessions or programs. It's about the everyday acts of kindness and empathy. As a mother, I emphasize the importance of compassion to my boys, instilling values that I hope they'll carry forward. As a family, we participate in community drives, support local causes, and always look out for opportunities to lend a hand. It's these small, consistent actions that make a significant difference.
Furthermore, my endeavors to improve women's healthcare in Georgia embody my spirit of giving back. Navigating the challenges of trying to establish birthing centers, advocating for equal healthcare access, and constantly pushing against societal and bureaucratic barriers, I aim to provide a beacon of hope. This journey, although demanding, has reinforced my belief in the power of resilience and excellence. By rallying support, forging alliances, and continually learning, I strive to make healthcare accessible and equitable for all.
Essentially, the spirit of excellence is a blend of personal growth, community upliftment, and unwavering perseverance. Every day offers a new opportunity to make a difference, learn, and grow. I aspire to embody excellence in its most accurate form through my daily endeavors as a nursing student, a professional, and a mother, coupled with my commitment to improving my community's healthcare landscape. It's not just about shining individually but ensuring that through our collective efforts, we uplift everyone around us.
Cheryl Twilley Outreach Memorial Scholarship
Balancing my life as a nursing student, working full time, foster parenting, and being a mother to three energetic boys has given me unique insights into the world. The disparities I've witnessed in the healthcare sector have profoundly shaped my beliefs, influenced my relationships, and directed the course of my plans.
Having seen women forced to give birth at home due to the sheer inability to afford hospital bills or those avoiding essential treatment for ailments ranging from STDs to psychological conditions, my understanding of socioeconomic adversity isn't theoretical—it's painfully honest. These aren't just stories; these are lived experiences that I've either undergone or have witnessed others suffer. It's heartbreaking and unjust, making me reevaluate my understanding of equality.
These experiences, coupled with my role as a nursing student, made it clear that the adversity stemming from socioeconomic disparities isn't merely an external problem. It's deeply personal. The very fabric of my beliefs has transformed. The fundamental principle I now stand by is that everyone should have access to essential healthcare regardless of their financial status. This isn't a privilege; it's a fundamental human right.
It's remarkable how these experiences have not only shifted my beliefs but have also molded my relationships. My husband and I, driven by shared passion, now champion women's rights, pushing for pivotal law reforms. We stand united in believing our world can be better and more equitable. Through our combined efforts, we hope to create an environment where my boys grow up respecting, understanding, and advocating for equal rights and healthcare accessibility for everyone.
When looking ahead, my interactions and observations of socioeconomic problems within Augusta have significantly pivoted my plans. While initially, I aspired to practice nursing solely, I now harbor the dream of furthering my medical education. I plan to attend medical school to deepen my expertise. I can become a more vigorous advocate for healthcare equity with more qualifications.
Moreover, witnessing the deficiencies in our healthcare system, particularly concerning women, I have felt a strong pull towards positively impacting my community. One poignant memory is the lack of birthing centers around my hometown in Georgia and the distressingly high maternal mortality rates. My struggles, such as the state's rejection to open a birth center, haven't dissuaded me. Instead, they've strengthened my resolve. With the support of legal entities and my community, I aim to change the restrictive laws of Georgia to create a more inclusive and caring health environment.
In the middle of this tumultuous journey, I've understood the power of education. Teaching young women about their health, body, and rights is invaluable. Leading a nonprofit geared towards the same has allowed me to blend my passion for healthcare with community upliftment.
Life, with its complexities and challenges, has been a consistent teacher. My experiences with mental health, influenced by the socioeconomic disparities I've seen, have fostered a deep-rooted desire to make a difference. It's not just about the community; it's about ensuring every individual, regardless of financial or social standing, feels seen, heard, and cared for.
In wrapping up, the intersections of my life—being a mother, a nursing student, and a full-time employee—while challenging, have endowed me with unique perspectives. They've shaped my worldview and ignited a flame to drive change, particularly in healthcare equity. With the tools of education, advocacy, and community service, I'm excited and hopeful for the journey ahead, believing in a world of equitable healthcare for all.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Balancing the roles of being a mother to three sons, pursuing my nursing studies, and working time is quite a juggling act. When this essay asked how mental health shapes my goals, relationships, and perspective on life, it struck a chord with me. Navigating through nursing school while managing the joys and responsibilities of motherhood and work has taught me resilience and effective time management. Importantly, it has made me prioritize taking care of my well-being. In particular, my mental health. I could not continue my high-stress life without a solid mental health foundation.
You see, mental health isn't an aspect of life; it's the cornerstone that supports every facet of our existence. It affects how we feel and influences our thoughts, interactions with others, and ability to handle challenges. Given my circumstances, maintaining mental health is essential to performing well as a student nurse, a dedicated mother, and a reliable employee. The stakes are high; losing sight of my well could impact my ability to make decisions, communicate effectively, thrive academically, provide exceptional patient care, and, above all else, be there for my children.
I have incorporated proven strategies into my busy life to ensure that I prioritize my well-being. Making time for self-care is one of the elements on my list. Even though I tend to prioritize others, such as my children, patients, or classmates, I have learned that I must include myself in that list without feeling guilty. Whether reading a book, taking a stroll outside, or simply having some "me time, " these moments rejuvenate me. Provide the mental clarity and energy I need to tackle my numerous responsibilities. More recently, I have begun listening to uplifting podcasts on the way to work, and I am also practicing meditation before class.
Regular physical activity is another pillar in maintaining my health. There is abundant evidence showing that exercise helps reduce stress and elevate mood. Any form of exercise—whether a jog, some yoga stretches, or an intense workout—acts as a valuable outlet for stress and allows me to clear my mind and regain focus.
I have discovered that social support is irreplaceable in preserving my well-being. Being connected to a network of students, coworkers, friends, and mainly my family protects against stress. Engaging in conversations and sharing experiences reminds me that I am not alone in facing challenges.
These connections form a safety net that catches me when I'm in need, strengthening my ability to bounce back and providing a feeling of belonging to a community.
Efficient time management also plays a role in my well-being approach. Creating an organized schedule and setting goals allows me to maximize my limited time. It also helps me break down tasks into manageable steps, making the overall process less overwhelming and more satisfying.
In summary, maintaining health is necessary for someone like me to navigate the challenges of academics, career, and family life. Each strategy I employ. Including self-care, building connections, and effective time management. Contributes to my stability, empowering me to excel despite obstacles.
Being awarded this scholarship would mean more than financial support; it would signify recognition for my commitment to prioritizing mental health. This would benefit me and the future patients I will serve my children, and the wider community. With your support, I am confident that I can continue to thrive professionally while advocating for the importance of mental well-being.
I appreciate your consideration of my application. This opportunity has the potential to transform my dedication into endeavors, and for that, I am incredibly grateful.
Ahmadi Family Scholarship
If someone were to embody an example of overcoming challenges, it would be me. My journey has led me to a different country and to start over by myself as an immigrant in the US. Ten years after immigrating, starting over my life during a recession, three boys and two of them with severe special needs and a catastrophic injury. I have lived through all the challenges that someone could imagine in a lifetime, let alone ten years.
More recently, my experience in the healthcare field in Georgia is a testament to this reality. By sharing my story, I aim to highlight the hurdles I've faced, the growth I've experienced, and how this scholarship can further support my pursuits.
Some time ago, I noticed a gap in healthcare and decided to establish a nonprofit birth center in Augusta. I intended to provide women with an improved, compassionate, high-quality healthcare environment. Unfortunately, Georgia's Certificate of Need program granted hospitals a say in matters and rejected my proposal. Being discouraged by this setback fueled my determination to advocate.
Then, viewing the door as a dead end, I saw it as an opportunity to pursue a broader mission; challenging and transforming maternal healthcare regulations in Georgia. I fully immersed myself in nursing studies while passionately advocating for reforms in the healthcare system.
I didn't just want to run a birth center; I also wanted to stand up for those who couldn't voice their concerns for those overwhelmed by the bureaucracy's complexities and inadequacies. It was a journey for me trying to balance my family responsibilities, pursue my goals, and relentlessly advocate for change.
The financial burden of juggling education, advocacy work, and caring for my family was intense.
My journey as an advocate has made me acutely aware of the issues within our healthcare system. Understanding how socioeconomic disparities intersect with policy gaps and inherent biases has deepened my commitment to making change.
It emphasized the importance of taking a holistic approach to advocacy.
I understood what I needed to do. I planned to go to school and pursue nursing and possibly even attend school. This way, I could change the law that would enable the opening of Birth Centers in Georgia. Lawmakers tend to listen to those who have experience in healthcare. No matter how passionate I was about my cause.
What did I learn from this experience? Persistence is crucial. Staying true to one's beliefs and adapting strategies to achieve the goal is essential when faced with obstacles. A supportive community is invaluable. Their collective wisdom, encouragement, and resources can. Guide individuals towards success.
When reflecting on my journey, the rejection of my birth center proposal initially saddened me. Ultimately became a catalyst for change. It sparked a passion for advocacy, driving me toward professional growth. It instilled in me resilience, determination, and an unwavering belief in the power of making a difference.
In conclusion, receiving this scholarship would greatly support my mission. It would alleviate burdens allowing me to dive deeper into my nursing studies while continuing my advocacy work with renewed energy. All while being present for my three boys.
Based on what I've gone through and the encouragement I receive, I hold onto my optimism and dedication to transforming the maternal healthcare situation in Georgia.

As a Christian nursing student passionate about midwifery, I was thrilled to discover Ina May Gaskins's Guide to Childbirth. This incredible book has given me insights into the principles of care and the importance of empowering women throughout the birthing journey. It also highlights the body's resilience and the numerous benefits of receiving care.
One invaluable lesson that I took away from this book is the significance of creating an environment for mothers. As someone who aspires to become a midwife and establish my birthing center in the future, I recognize that a woman's birthing experience can profoundly impact her emotional well-being. Therefore it becomes essential to establish a space where women feel empowered to make decisions about their care.
Furthermore, this book has further strengthened my belief in every woman's right to choose how she gives birth and where she feels most at ease. Unfortunately, many women are left without options. They are forced to give birth in hospitals or at home without support or resources. My ultimate goal is to bring about change by establishing a birth center that provides care which is easily accessible and compassionate for women in the Augusta region.
One aspect of Gaskins's account that deeply resonated with me was her experience of giving birth after enduring trauma.
In my delivery, I had an emergency C-section after enduring 52 hours of labor. It was pretty distressing. It hasn't discouraged me from considering births. One thing that drives me is empowering women and encouraging them to take control of their health and overall well-being. Educating them about their bodies and the different healthcare options available is essential, as this can significantly improve healthcare outcomes in our community.
As a student from a family about to enter college, I understand the opportunity I have to impact my community and inspire others to do the same. I'll gain the skills and resources to achieve my goals by pursuing education. I intend to pursue a nursing degree, allowing me to continue working in healthcare while expanding my understanding of practices.
My ultimate goal is to contribute towards creating a society for generations by advocating for sustainable healthcare practices and improving healthcare outcomes for women. During childbirth, I aspire to provide an environment where women receive informed support that empowers them to make the best choices for themselves and their babies. Additionally, this book has inspired me to advocate for reforms in healthcare policies and improved accessibility of services.
As a mother of three boys and a local business owner, I have experience with women's challenges in accessing high-quality healthcare in areas. As a midwife, my main objective is to impact the healthcare system and raise awareness about the importance of providing care during childbirth.
Ina May Gaskins Guide to Childbirth has been instrumental in shaping my approach to care and reinforcing my commitment to improving childbirth outcomes and expanding access to top-notch services. As a nursing student with aspirations of becoming a midwife, I am excited about deepening my knowledge and expertise in this field while positively influencing the lives of mothers, their babies, and their families. We need more Christian-centered care in this country.
Priscilla Shireen Luke Scholarship
As a college student, I'm currently exploring career opportunities in nursing that align with my passion for midwifery and pregnancy. I desire to provide support and care to mothers during this significant and emotional time in their lives. The thought of becoming a nurse specializing in midwifery is incredibly fulfilling and rewarding.
One of my goals is to help address the shortage of midwives in the United States. Research has shown that midwives can offer effective care for mothers and their babies, but there is still a need for more professionals in this field to meet the growing demand. By pursuing nursing with a focus on midwifery, I hope to contribute to improving access to quality postnatal care, especially in underserved communities.
Moreover, as someone who strongly believes in healthcare reform, I firmly advocate for healthcare as a right. Everyone must have access to quality healthcare regardless of income or social status. Through my experiences, I've witnessed firsthand how limited healthcare access can negatively impact individuals and families. That's why I need to make a difference in this area. This directly impacts my community. Women in Augusta need more access to healthcare. Georgia is one of the worst states in the country to give birth in. It is currently worse than Syria and Cuba. To me, this is unacceptable. Women in my community are dying, and local healthcare accepts this as a norm. I plan on changing this.
My passion for advocating for healthcare and reform is deeply rooted in my journey. Experiencing the hurdles I faced during childbirth and witnessing my family's decision to adopt a child with fibrosis and deafness has profoundly influenced me. These experiences have taught me lessons about the significance of nursing, the value of knowledgeable medical teams, and the critical need for equal access to high-quality healthcare.
Regarding my involvement in healthcare, I have actively worked towards changing legislation in Georgia. Specifically, I have been focused on eliminating the requirement for birth centers to obtain certificates of need aiming to expand access to midwifery care and provide mothers with options. Additionally, I am collaborating with a profit legal firm on two lawsuits against the state. These legal efforts aim to improve access to healthcare for individuals residing in low-income areas by advocating for changes in laws. Through these experiences, I have gained an understanding of our healthcare system and the challenges individuals face when trying to access quality care.
By pursuing a nursing and midwifery career, I can make a difference in the lives of mothers, their babies, and their families. Through advocacy work focused on healthcare reform and expanding access to quality care, I aim to contribute to our healthcare system and help ensure everyone has access to high-quality healthcare services.
In summary, I'm enthusiastic about delving into the career paths in nursing and midwifery. It's my ambition to find a profession that resonates with my interests and principles. By merging my experiences, advocacy efforts, and medical expertise, I can make a difference in the lives of individuals within our community and myself.

Growing up with a mother taught me resilience, strength, and overcoming challenges. The experiences I went through have impacted shaping who I am today. One vivid memory is the day my younger sister was diagnosed with Autism. It was a moment that significantly changed our lives. Shortly after her diagnosis, my father relocated to Switzerland for work. As a child, I couldn't fully comprehend the complexities of decisions. What hurt me profoundly was mishearing some people blaming my mother for my sister's condition due to a perceived lack of love on her part. These baseless accusations took a toll on my mothers well being. She fell into a period of depression.
As a child, I felt an immense responsibility thrust upon me at eight years old. Suddenly I found myself in the role of a parent, to my siblings, to my sister.
There were moments when I felt overwhelmed and longed for a childhood. I wished to spend time with friends after school without worrying about meals or doctor's appointments. However, despite the challenges, there was a side. Even though it was tough, taking care of my family taught me the importance of understanding others' feelings, being resilient, and cherishing the bonds within my family from an age. It also taught me to be patient, attentive to others' needs, and resourceful. These lessons shaped my aspiration to become a nurse.
Despite facing her struggles, my mother served as a source of strength and inspiration. She often shared stories about her challenges and how she overcame them with sheer determination. I can still recall her words echoing: "Keep moving, dear. The world is full of opportunities." Her dreams for me were deeply rooted in education as she believed it held the key to a future. She persistently encouraged me to pursue education at university not only to acquire knowledge but also for personal growth and to establish a secure foundation for myself.
When I landed my first job, she was my supporter, constantly pushing me to seize every opportunity that came my way to advance in my career. Her unwavering faith in the importance of work and self-improvement was genuinely contagious.
When I met my husband and had to decide to relocate to the United States to be with him, my mother became a pillar of strength for me. Although leaving her behind seemed overwhelming, she reminded me that finding love is rare and life is about taking risks and following our hearts. Throughout that decision-making process, her constant support and belief in me helped lay the foundation for my happiness.
My mother had a lot of dreams she never got to complete. She wanted to become a foster parent and have involvement with a dog rescue. Through me, she has been able to achieve these dreams. I have become a foster parent while in nursing school. I remember her fiercely fighting for fundamental rights for my sister while she was in school. I use that same passion today to fight for my foster son to ensure he gets the best care possible.
To sum it up, growing up with a mother amidst challenges has been both a trial and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. My mother's unwavering determination, belief in the power of education, and encouragement to pursue love and happiness have all impacted who I am today. These experiences have not shaped me as an individual. It also guided me on my path as a nursing student, instilling values such as compassion, empathy, and perseverance.

From the moment I held my first child, I knew that my mission was to make a difference in the healthcare and childbirth field. I want to bring hope, mental health care, accessibility, healthcare choices, healing, and compassion to those most need it.
Growing up as a young carer for my sister with severe autism for 15 years, I learned the importance of compassion and the impact that dedicated medical professionals can have on people's lives. This experience, combined with my firsthand knowledge of the challenges and joys of motherhood, has inspired me to join the healthcare industry to make a difference in the lives of others.
As a young carer, I often felt depressed and hopeless. My life revolved around my sister, and I hardly got a break. My mother was suffering from severe depression, which left her unable to care for any of her children. My Dad was working abroad. The task fell to me to take care of everyone. This led to me putting my nursing dreams on the back burner until I could stabilize my family. Finally, at the age of 30 and with my own family, I was able to start nursing school.
In addition to pursuing a career in nursing and midwifery, I am actively working to change the law in Georgia to allow birth centers to operate without requiring certificates of need, thereby increasing access to midwifery care for expectant mothers. Midwifery care provides more mental health support. They look for root causes of depression and often recommend therapy and medications. This change needs to happen for all postpartum care across the country.
Midwives provide more accessible care, which would lead to women being able to approach them with concerns about mental health.
Often, there is a stigma with doctors. Midwives are seen as more traditional and approachable with concerns about mental health.
I advocate for special needs children and am passionate about promoting foster parenting and adoption in Georgia. My commitment to the well-being of children extends beyond the hospital walls and into my community, where I tirelessly work to create a brighter future for those who need it most. I am a foster parent to a six-month-old baby with Cystic Fibrosis who is hard of hearing. It has produced some challenging times while I was attending college. This has made some difficult times for my mental health.
Some nights I was up with the baby performing chest percussion to break down mucus every hour. I started to spiral into depression, and it was only when I reached out to our local foster parent support group and caseworker that I got a break. This helped me immensely.
Despite the challenges of balancing work, family, and education, I am driven by the belief that anything is possible with determination and perseverance. My dedication to higher education and the healthcare industry symbolizes hope and opportunity, a chance to break down barriers and achieve my dreams. Through hard work and unwavering dedication, I am confident that I can make a meaningful impact on the lives of others and create a more compassionate, inclusive, and equitable healthcare landscape for all.

The intersection of political activism and nursing differs from the path most tread upon when entering nursing. Yet, it is the path that has found me. My volunteer experiences and core values of empathy, equity, and resilience have influenced my life's aspirations and career objectives after graduation. Specifically, my dedication to addressing health disparities and advocating for the disadvantaged is a motivating compass guiding my work. This all started when I decided to open a birth center in Augusta, Georgia. I was informed that women are expendable and that even though women are dying in childbirth at a rate like a third-world country, the hospitals would continue to value profit over human lives. They would not allow any service expansion to help the community; the only thing that mattered was their bottom line.
From here, I was thrown into a world of press interviews, volunteering, and speaking at political and law reform rallies. I soon learned that nursing is not just about healthcare within hospitals or communities but also about activism and standing up for what we believe in.
Opening a birth center is not merely a career aspiration but a dream born from the many hands I've held and the stories I've heard, volunteering in the heart of maternity deserts. These experiences of giving out women's health kits to homeless women unveiled a stark reality: Access to quality healthcare, particularly maternity care, is a privilege when it should be a universal right. It exposed me to the breadth and depth of healthcare disparities, fueling my desire to bring change.
Imagine a place where a woman, regardless of her socio-economic background, can walk in and receive comprehensive prenatal and postnatal care. A place where her concerns are heard, her dignity respected, and her rights upheld. A place where the patient understands the difference between consent and coercion in medical decisions, and free educational classes empower them to make their own decisions. That is the birth center I envision. It goes beyond providing medical care; it's about creating a sanctuary where a woman's journey into motherhood is celebrated, supported, and respected. This goal is far from easy, yet my commitment to these core values propels me forward.
Nursing is a profession and a platform to address and dismantle systemic barriers that prevent equitable healthcare access. Activism is the other side of the nursing coin. It's about pushing boundaries, challenging norms, and advocating for policy changes to reshape the healthcare landscape. My journey in nursing has evolved from caring for individuals to caring for communities, focusing on prevention rather than cure.
Each weekend, I prepare and distribute women's health kits to people experiencing homelessness. These moments reinforce my commitment to creating an environment where healthcare is not determined by one's ability to pay but by their inherent right to access it.
In the forthcoming years, I intend to work relentlessly towards opening this birth center, first in my local community and, eventually, in other maternity deserts. I aim to be a voice for the voiceless and set a precedent for healthcare accessibility, particularly in maternal care.
In essence, my volunteer experiences have deeply etched the values of empathy, activism, and equity into the cornerstone of my career aspirations. As I embark on this journey, I understand that the path will be filled with challenges, but it is a path I willingly choose, for it resonates with my core values and the change I wish to effect in my community.

AI Innovators Undergraduate Scholarship

AI has a new role in education, not just for detecting who wrote the content submitted in an essay.
In the nursing world, we use it to create test-style questions to prepare for nursing exams. The significance of AI in making detailed study plans and accurate test questions in the style of the nursing board exams is an incredible tool that can help so many students.
For example, I am a student who has three boys under four at home, a busy after-school schedule, and I need to utilize my time to study. I need to make the most of every single second to maximize my time while looking after my mental health.
When using AI to generate test questions specific to my material, I can check my knowledge and brush up on areas needing clarification. If I get a question wrong continuously, I can ask the AI to explain the term or definition to me in simple terms so I can break it down and understand it. This has been incredibly useful in a Psychiatric Nursing Class, but I need to understand some Pharmacology terminology. It saves me time from going back and forth between multiple textbooks to find the answer, which is often hidden in various chapters.
Some issue that needs to be addressed is using AI detectors in school. A few of my classmates and I worked on a poster this year, which flagged our thesis statement as AI-generated when the teacher gave the AI statement to us. She had created it, and in turn, she saw the flaws of AI detectors. We showed her that it also states that the bible, the US Constitution, and the deceleration of independence are also flagged as AI-generated. Our professor copied in part of her doctorate thesis, which was also flagged as AI-generated, despite being generated ten years before the launch of AI. Sadly, people are going to use AI for the wrong reason. However, AI detection tools are not up to the capability to successfully tell the difference between a human-written paper and one assisted by AI.
AI has a vast potential to personalize educational plans. I recently asked it to develop an educational program for my son, who has level 2 autism and is obsessed with the solar system. It gave me an incredibly detailed 30-day plan with writing, math, and science-based problems all about the solar system. He was thrilled and did not realize he was completing curriculum work while fixating on his favorite hobby.
It is not just college students benefiting from AI but preschoolers. AI will be a game changer in customizing the educational plan for every individual. Schools have always said they could not adapt to give each child special treatment or their path. AI is the answer. Every child could have their preset curriculum to help them find their strengths and weaknesses. There could be a use for creating personalized study plans and tools for struggling children and adults.
After graduation, I plan to study nurse-midwifery and use AI technology to develop a training program to accelerate the program. We have a vast shortage of Nurse-Midwives in the United States. The only way to correct this imbalance is to find a better, clearer, and more defined path to make the courses more accessible to nurses who wish to pursue midwifery.
In conclusion, this is an exciting time to be in school. AI will be the future, and there will be no stopping its growth or use. It will assist people in more ways than just with education. Some people use it to create meal and workout plans and find which Netflix show to watch next. The possibilities are endless.
Romeo Nursing Scholarship
Nursing has always been a field of interest to me since I gave birth in 2019. It aligns with my passion for midwifery, childbirth, advocacy, newborn care and assisting women in pregnancy.
I aspire to become a nurse midwife, where I would have the opportunity to work closely with expectant mothers and their babies. I would be able to offer care and support during one of the most significant and emotional times of their lives.
Additionally, I could give them firsthand experience and explain what they are going through while pregnant and postpartum. As someone who has experienced both natural and medicated labor, I can offer them valuable insight into what they are going through and provide true empathy at the most painful experience of their life.
Being a part of such a beautiful moment in someone's life would be an incredibly gratifying experience I can’t think of a better way to spend your day. I can't think of a happier profession!
Although there would be moments of sorrow, such as with stillbirth or miscarriage, I believe I could offer compassionate and professional care to these women. As I have also experienced both situations as a doula.
One of my goals while being a midwife is to help bridge the gap in the lack of midwives in the healthcare system within the United States. Multiple studies have shown midwives offer safe and effective care to expectant mothers and their babies.
Unfortunately, there are not enough midwives to meet the increasing demand for their services in the United States. When I finish my specialism in midwifery, I hope to help increase women's access to quality prenatal and postnatal care by driving more nurses into the field by leading by example.
Another goal of mine is to continue pursuing my passion for women's health advocacy and maternal healthcare reform. I firmly believe that healthcare is a fundamental human right, and everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, irrespective of their income or social status. Through my personal experiences, I have seen the impact a lack of healthcare access can have on individuals and families, and I am determined to make a difference.
As a mother, I have experienced childbirth firsthand, including a problematic emergency C-section and a successful VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). These experiences have instilled in me a deep appreciation for the care and support that nurses can provide during labor and delivery. This has inspired me to become a nurse midwife and offer others the same care and support.
Recently, my family's decision to adopt a child with cystic fibrosis and deafness has taught me much about compassion in nursing. Our son requires constant medical care, and I have witnessed firsthand how crucial it is to have a supportive medical team. The care that he has received has inspired me to provide the same level of care and support to others.
In terms of past medical experience, I have actively been working to change the law in Georgia to allow birth centers to operate without requiring certificates of need. This change would help increase access to midwifery care and provide more options for expectant mothers.
Receiving this scholarship would help me achieve my personal and professional goals and have a ripple effect in my community. Pursuing a career in nurse-midwifery and advocating for healthcare reform, I hope to inspire others to do the same. I want to show others that, even in the face of adversity, it is possible to make a difference and create positive change.
McGovern Legacy Scholarship
My journey as a foster parent to a baby abandoned under Georgia's Safe Haven law is a testament to creating a family legacy for him within our family. As we navigate his unique medical needs and prepare for adoption, my family and I are excited to give him a life filled with unconditional love and countless opportunities, and empowerment to overcome obstacles due to his disabilities.
My husband and I have always believed in the power of compassion and the responsibility to create a safe space for every child. This is why we felt called to become foster parents in 2015. We specialize in babies born with drug and alcohol addiction.
In February 2023, we received a call that was a little different. A baby had been abandoned, which meant there was a chance for us to adopt. Despite the complexities of his medical needs, our resolve to provide him with a loving home was unwavering.
This commitment to inclusion and acceptance is a cornerstone of our family legacy that we hope to attain. Our legacy will celebrate diversity and cherish every individual's unique journey. Navigating the intricacies of our foster son's medical conditions presents challenges but strengthens our resolve.
As parents to other special needs children, we are no strangers to the healthcare system, advocacy, and the tenacity needed to navigate the landscape of complex care. Our experience has equipped us with the necessary skills, resources, and patience for this journey. We apply these lessons to our foster son's situation, advocating fiercely for his medical needs.
Adopting our foster son is the next crucial step. Our goal is to give him a loving family, a secure home, and a nurturing environment where he is cherished for who he is, regardless of his disability. We envision a future where he is defined not by his disabilities but by his strengths. We hope to provide him with all the love and resources he will need to overcome any obstacles in his life.
Our family's legacy is a testimony to community service, healthcare reform, and advocacy, and this is the foundation we're building for our foster son's future. We strongly value fairness, acceptance, and kindness. We plan to pass these values to our son, helping him grow into a strong, kind, compassionate, and motivated person. We hope that he'll make his mark on the world with the love and support of his family behind him.
Education is a big part of this vision. Our foster son's family could not afford anyone to attend college, and they are a prime example of the glass ceiling. I want him to see that education is obtainable at any point in life. By returning to school as an older student, I want him to know that it is always possible to grow and change.
Winning this scholarship would allow me to focus on my family and college during the last year and a half of my nursing curriculum. I could spend fewer hours at my part-time job with my children.
As I continue on my journey through nursing school and motherhood, I am inspired by a shared dream with my husband. This is a world where every child, no matter where they come from, is shown love and given all the opportunities they need to succeed. This goal gets me up and moving daily, reminds me to be compassionate with all patients (even the difficult ones), encourages us to keep going when things get tough, and fills us with hope for the future we're building together.

Cariloop’s Caregiver Scholarship
WinnerMy caregiving experience has been a defining part of my life, impacting my goals, journey, and identity. As a mother to three boys three, including one with autism and OCD, and a two-month-old foster child with cystic fibrosis and hearing loss, my life has been challenging but rewarding. Caring for my sons has taught me valuable compassion, patience, and advocacy lessons.
My journey as a caregiver began when my first son was diagnosed with autism and OCD. He required extensive speech therapy, ABA, occupational therapy, and food therapy sessions. As a mother, I had to become an advocate for him to get the services he needed to thrive. This experience taught me how to navigate the healthcare system and advocate for my son's rights.
Recently, my family fostered a two-month-old boy who was abandoned and left in a Safe-haven hospital in Georgia. He has cystic fibrosis and hearing loss, and we have had to advocate to get him therapies at a young age to prevent developmental delays. As a caregiver, I have learned the importance of supporting children who cannot speak for themselves.
Outside of caring for my children, I am also a full-time nursing student and working full-time. Juggling multiple responsibilities can be challenging, but I am determined to impact my community positively. For example, I am working on changing laws to make establishing healthcare facilities in underserved areas easier. I am also suing the government to stop local facilities from restricting trade for new healthcare facilities that want to open. As a nurse, I plan to use my advocacy skills to make positive changes in the healthcare industry.
Despite the challenges of being a caregiver, I am excited about the opportunities to improve access to healthcare for women in Georgia and beyond. My primary goal is to open birth centers across the state, starting with Augusta, to ensure every woman has access to safe and reliable healthcare. Additionally, as the executive director of a nonprofit organization promoting healthcare for young women, I hope to empower them to take control of their health and well-being.
Being a caregiver has impacted my goals, journey, and identity in many ways. It has taught me the importance of patience, compassion, and advocacy. It has also inspired me to pursue a nursing career to impact the healthcare industry positively. Despite the challenges, I am determined to make a difference in my children's lives and countless patients and their families.
