My name is Kate Guillet Irigoyen, and I am a high school senior at Centennial highschool in Boise, Idaho. I have been constantly on the lookout for new scholarships or grants to fill out that will give me a boost in tuition expenses, lending me a greater opportunity for my future studies. I have applied to the scholarship as I am insistent need of finances to go on in my career with a good educational foundation. A little bit about me is that I am from Cuauhtemoc, Mexico and Lyon, France and I have been living in Idaho for 10 years. I am very culturally rounded and have had the opportunity of witnessing the differences between cultures and different environments, and have ever since loved learning about STEM and history topics such as astronomy, biology, and geology. I come from a very determined and hardworking family so my educational interests have always been high. I maintain a 3.9-4.0 GPA throughout the year and am involved in several clubs and organizations which push students towards achieving their utmost potential in the community as well as academically. As of right now I am in 7 clubs and organizations which all focus on different aspects of a stronger community and large peer support group. Some of my positions include art club president, member of national Honor society, AVID member, CCF (Christ fellowship club), French club, Japanese club president, girls in stem, in previous sources of strength member. I will be graduating in the summer of 2025, and hope to enroll in a post-secondary schooling institute in Idaho or Washington. I'm hoping to graduate with a bachelor's in physics ESS or geology ESS to be able to go into a private industry for research on celestial bodies in Astrogeology. I plan on taking courses at a four year university depending on our financial status, or going into a two year university before receiving my bachelor's. I'm interested in focusing my studies on geology majors that will dive into research like astrology and mineralogy. I would like to take part and discovering celestial body components as well as the land structures presented on Earth. Discovering what makes a grain of sand or an entire exoplanet special through chemical buildup is fascinating, and it can lead to many hints as to how the object was made and if there's any possible life present. The classes and lessons I've taken part in through high School I have led me to a better understanding of what field I would like to go in. There are so many research options available and I would like to explore what these areas of study could offer for our future, sustaining a better environment, and improving technology. Over the past few years of high school I've been focusing greatly on building up my resume, experiences, an involvement through several opportunities. Some of them being engineering and stem field summer programs at local universities. I was one of the recipients of the Smith science institution program at the college of Idaho and was very lucky to get to see some of the research students were working on. Outside of school I have many creative hobbies including ceramics painting and gardening. Some of my long-term personal goals include improving my creative skills and knowledge in science, possibly having my own ceramic studio, or taking classes in a minor for art on the side. I have many hobbies and passions and unfriend to change goals but also fine education to be super important in understanding the world around us and keeping her well sustained environment.

As of August 2024, I have been applying to multiple colleges in Idaho ranging in tuition from 7 thousand dollars a year to more than 20 thousand dollars a year and will be expected to be financially independent. I hope to enroll in a post-secondary schooling institute in Idaho or Washington in the fall of 2025 and hope to graduate with a bachelor's in physics ESS or Geology ESS to be able to go into a private industry for research on celestial bodies in space in Astrogeology. I plan on taking 2 years of Geology and Physics courses at College of Western Idaho or Boise State University as it is some of the cheapest financial options for my family. I then plan on transferring to another university for another 2-3 years to graduate. Depending on my financial status with college savings I might be able to go to better universities like University of Idaho or my top school University of Washington. A little bit about me is that I come from a very determined and hard-working family so my educational expectations and interests have always been high (4.0-3.8 gpa). Kate Guillet Irigoyen Mikey Taylor Memorial Scholarship July 29th, 2024 Mental Growth: When I think back to a part of my life that has been mentally draining and confusing for me, I think back to when my family first moved to the USA in the fall of 2014. At the time my family was lining in Lyon, France in a small city built near the countryside where I attended school as a first grader. Those few years of living in France can be described as being some of the most peacefully years in my young childhood, and at the time I was building friendships and connections to the town we lived in. Soon enough the news came and rising costs in France became too burdensome for my parents, to combat this they found opportunities for work outside the country. It was a significant step in my life as well as my families and at a first glance it may not seem like this would've affected my mental health as much. But because of increasing expenses of living in France and the unsafe conditions in Mexico, my parents relocated us to Idaho for greater work opportunities and more peaceful living conditions. This was a very big step for all of us as we didn't speak English fluently and we hadn’t visited the Americas much beforehand. During much of that time I was unaware as to why we were moving and had a hard time adjusting to the new school environment because of the language barrier. I still remember some of the hardest days at school when I couldn't communicate my thoughts properly and had to get the help of other Spanish speaking students and teachers. As a 7-year-old I felt vulnerable and embarrassed towards my other classmates as they most likely didn't understand what I was going through, and despite their support and reassurance I couldn't understand them. For those first four months of school I had to focus on learning and understanding English, the grammar, and spelling so that I wouldn't fall behind my other classmates. By listening and taking ELA courses with a Spanish speaking teacher, I was able to grow and become fluent to the point where I lost my accent. I eventually made some of the most important friendships of my life after being able to communicate (still friends to this day after 10 years) and grew my love for research by presenting my knowledge to the class (through small presentations and projects) This was definitely one of the hardest times for me as a child, but looking back I am grateful of everything that took place at the time and my family moved to the US. Because of the language barrier between my classmates and I, I was able to become more determined towards learning the language thus moving past all the bottled-up emotions. Without the support of my ELA teachers and classmates, I wouldn't have been able to grow this much as a person at such as young age. Not only having the opportunity to travel around the world with my family but also experiencing different cultures along the way has given me a different perspective towards life. The mental health barriers I had to overcome at the time has strengthened my relationship with my family and friends, but also my beliefs and career aspirations.

Even as a young child I always had a creative outlook in life, I would take anything available and make it into something new. I experimented with mud and natural elements and found ways to make new materials like clay, with sand. Through my younger years I experimented, building up my creativity with different mediums and began studying various topics for fun. I would write down what I found out as if I had discovered the topic, I began obsessing over archeological sites such as the Terra-Cotta warriors. My ambition drove me in different directions, and I began growing studiously and creatively. I began studying at an early age and enjoyed it, I grew studiously and prepared myself for the future as well as finding my passion for science. As I grew up and went into high school I took more time to focus on my future career, this led me to taking classes in earth science as well as Geology. Focusing on others expectation would have never gotten me to where I am now, but those that gave me advice and knowledge helped me significantly. I remember the first few lab projects that were assigned in my earth science, I partnered with a group of girls, and we commenced the process of identifying the minerals given to us. I could easily identify each mineral and enjoyed knowing and testing their hardness, streak color, and crystalline arrangements. Trying to gain as much knowledge about the specimens as I could because it is something I legitimately enjoy. The classes and lessons I took and learned from in high school and middle school led to my creative burgeoning. The analysis I made as well as the tips I gained led me to better understanding what field I would like to go in. Astrogeology or Exogeology is a branch of Astronomy, and it can be tied together with many other fields that look into celestial bodies. Astrogeology is a field that has made new discoveries such as Martian lakes, volcanic structures in exoplanets, as well as new minerals such as helium hydrides, and in the near future I would like to take part in the pursuit of knowledge for some out of this world discoveries.

From a young age, creativity had always been a part of my life. I enjoyed experimenting with natural elements like mud and leaves to create new materials like clay. I soon discovered my talent for identifying different minerals and analyzing their properties. Although I attracted both positive and negative attention from my peers, the support from my friends and teachers helped me continue improving. As an adult studying geology and earth structure, I will continue to use my creative mindset when working tactically. My formative experiences have taught me the importance of self-growth and asking questions, which are key aspects of any creative job. The support and guidance from others have also been essential to my success. In conclusion, my lifelong fascination with creativity and learning has prepared me for my future career in geology. From experimenting with natural materials as a child to identifying minerals in an earth science class as a teenager, I have developed a creative mindset that will serve me well in the field. Despite facing challenges along the way, the support and guidance from others have helped me reach where I am today.
