Spirit of West Virginia Scholarship
West Virginia isn't just a place that I put on an application for my place of residence. West Virginia is what I call home and the place I was raised. This place has shaped me in the way that the hardworking people of this state are molded. We are the type of people to see our land as a family member, something you would want to cherish as long as possible. The hidden gems of West Virginia are something that I find very special. All of the mountains, lakes, and other beautiful landscapes.
I have lived in the wild and wonderful West Virginia for my whole life. A lot of the people that I have grown up with talk about how they can’t wait to move to a different state. Personally, I think that West Virginia offers something special that I will always have in my heart. With the opportunity to move away, I chose to stay in West Virginia for college.
The people of West Virginia are hard working and strong. Often people have a stereotype of West Virginians. They are rednecks. They marry their cousins. They are all hicks. While some people may fit that description, that is not what being a West Virginian is about. We persevere through all of the hardships and grow from that making us stronger. We work hard to reach our goals. Most importantly, we care for everyone around us.
Not only do we care for our fellow West Virginia residents, we care for the land that we live on. It is important to take care of the land because it does so much for us. We have farms that produce food for us and house animals that also provide goods to us. Although our roads are often filled with potholes. They are the transport to get us to the beautiful places within our state. One of the most known places in West Virginia is the New River Gorge. It is one of the most beautiful sights to see in West Virginia. Not only are there well-known national parks that provide the beautiful sights that everyone knows about. There are also the local wonders that residents of the wild and wonderful state can experience every day. There are many lakes that many people live on and can experience. Lakes such as Cheat Lake, Tygart Lake, and more will be a part of many of the lives of the residents for their entire lives.
Herb Collins Scholarship
Hi. I am Karleigh Tipton and I plan on making a difference in the lives of everyone around me. When I was younger I had a rash on my face that would not go away. I suffered from the appearance of it for years and finally, I found a doctor that was willing to put in the time to help diagnose the strange rash on my face. I want to mainly impact the community through community service but also by becoming a doctor and having patients that have lost hope of getting treatment. I think that as a doctor you can make a tremendous difference in the lives of many people.
Next year, I plan to attend college at West Virginia University. I later plan to attend medical school also at West Virginia University. While in college, I plan to do at least 50 hours of community service each year. I think that it is very important to give back to your community. After college, I don't plan on changing. I think that it is still an important part of life. Most importantly I will be a doctor in the community. I think that it is very important to have doctors that have come from the local community. I plan to be a dermatologist that specialized in peculiar cases.
When I was little, I had to go to many dermatologists for my rash and eventually, a doctor was willing to day more than "It will go away". I think that having doctors that listen to you and are willing to help is not only a good thing to have but also would be a great addition to any community. And that is exactly what I plan to be. I want everyone around to feel comfortable in their bodies and not have to be ashamed of a rash or an abnormally large mole. I don't want any little kids to feel the way I did when I was young.
I think that having something that hits so close to home is a big thing when you're trying to make a change. It makes everything more personal and for me that fuels a lot of motivation. My main goal is to successfully make the community more comfortable in their skin for those of all ages. I never want anyone to feel bad about the way they look or to have other people make comments to them as I experienced. That is why I will strive to help all of the people no matter their struggles and that is how I plan to impact my community.
Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
I think that one of the most important technologies is computers. They have revolutionized the way things are done in almost every profession. Take doctors for example, they used to have to do everything on paper which leaves a lot of room for human error. Now, they have electronic patient charts. their paging systems are more effective, they have more advanced ways of communicating. But one of the most important things may be the fact that anyone can publish a paper they did on something. In the field of medicine, this could mean a lot. Doctors across the world can look at something and compare it to their patient and potentially make a discovery that otherwise would not be made.
In the future, I think that computers could do so much more. I think that in the future, computers will a majority of things in medicine. I think that there will be computerization of giving medications for more exact measurement and accurate time of taking it. I also think that there will be technology to do certain surgeries with little to no scar or opening that before were a major procedure. Things such as charts will be computerized to the point where all you have to do is talk, and the chart will fill in its self.
Even though technology has already come so far, I do no think that we know just how far it will take us in the future. Not only in medicine, but in all aspects of the world!
