Growing up as a first-generation Latina in Quincy, WA, my life was shaped by the challenges of living in a single-parent, low-income household. My mother and father worked tirelessly in our modest apartment, often facing financial struggles that led to frequent arguments. Despite these hardships, their unwavering commitment to improving our situation left a lasting impression on me.
My parents' relentless efforts to save enough money to buy a home from our farm community deeply inspired me. Their sacrifices demonstrated the power of perseverance and dedication. I learned early on the value of hard work and resilience, which fueled my ambition to overcome obstacles and pursue my goals.
Now, I channel these lessons into actively working towards positive change. I am pursuing a degree in social work to help others facing similar challenges. I also volunteer with local organizations that support underprivileged youth, offering mentorship and encouragement. By advocating for policies that address systemic inequities, I aim to create opportunities for those from backgrounds like mine, ensuring that the sacrifices of my parents continue to inspire progress in our community.

Sun Tzu's principle from "The Art of War," which states, "All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near," offers profound insights not only for military strategy but also for everyday life, including our experiences as students. This passage underscores the importance of perception and strategic thinking, which can be effectively applied to academic and personal challenges.
At its essence, Sun Tzu’s assertion highlights that control over how others perceive our capabilities and intentions can influence outcomes. For students, this principle can be particularly relevant in academic and competitive environments. Here’s how we can incorporate this concept into our student lives.
In academic settings, how we present ourselves can significantly impact perceptions and outcomes. For instance, when preparing for exams or projects, we might choose to downplay our level of preparedness to avoid undue pressure or expectations. By appearing less prepared than we are, we can avoid overestimation from peers or instructors. This can also create a more manageable situation where we can exceed expectations and gain recognition for our actual capabilities.
In competitive scenarios, such as applying for internships, scholarships, or leadership roles, strategically managing how others perceive our strengths can be advantageous. For instance, when applying for a prestigious internship, subtly emphasizing our unique, less obvious strengths rather than all-encompassing abilities can make our application stand out. By focusing on specific, targeted skills rather than presenting a broad, potentially overwhelming skill set, we can effectively position ourselves as ideal candidates for specific opportunities.
Sun Tzu’s principle also emphasizes adaptability—being able to alter our approach based on how the situation unfolds. As students, adapting to different learning environments and challenges is crucial. For example, if a particular teaching method or study strategy is not working, it’s essential to recognize this and adjust our approach. Being flexible and responsive to feedback or changing conditions ensures that we continue to make progress and overcome obstacles effectively.
Deception in this context can also apply to managing our stress and workload. By not publicly stressing over deadlines or exams, we can maintain a calm and composed demeanor. This approach helps avoid creating additional anxiety for ourselves and others while also allowing us to work more effectively behind the scenes. For example, appearing calm about a challenging assignment while working diligently behind the scenes can prevent unnecessary stress and create a more controlled environment for tackling academic pressures.
Building positive relationships with peers and faculty can also benefit from strategic thinking. In fact our may be one of the most helpful ways his work teaches us. By understanding and aligning our interactions with the expectations and communication styles of others, we can foster stronger, more supportive connections. For instance, presenting ourselves as approachable and collaborative, while strategically choosing when to assert our perspectives or seek support, can enhance our effectiveness in group projects and academic collaborations.
Effective time management is another area where Sun Tzu’s principle of deception can be applied. By setting clear priorities and managing our time efficiently, we can appear to be well-organized and on top of our workload. This perception of competence and preparedness can positively influence how peers and professors view our contributions and reliability, thereby creating opportunities for further collaboration and support.
Incorporating Sun Tzu’s principle into student life requires a careful balance between genuine effort and strategic presentation. It is not about deceit in a harmful sense but rather about understanding how perceptions can influence interactions and outcomes. By managing how we present our capabilities and adapting to varying circumstances, we can navigate academic and personal challenges more effectively, ultimately leading to greater success and fulfillment.
In summary, Sun Tzu’s principle of deception in warfare teaches us the importance of strategic presentation and adaptability. As students, applying this principle can help us manage academic challenges, enhance our competitive edge, and build positive relationships. By understanding and leveraging perceptions, we can achieve our goals and thrive in both academic and personal pursuits.
Mental Health Importance Scholarship
Mental health is crucial because it influences how we handle stress, relate to others, and make decisions. For me, as a first-generation student from Quincy, WA, with Mexican immigrant parents, maintaining mental wellness is essential for navigating the demands of academic life and personal responsibilities. My mental health impacts my ability to balance my studies, work part-time, and manage my commitments effectively.
To maintain my mental wellness, I engage in several key practices that support my overall well-being:
Physical activity is a fundamental part of my routine. I enjoy jogging, yoga, and hiking, which not only help me manage stress but also boost my mood. Regular exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters and help me stay focused and energized for my studies and work.
I practice mindfulness and meditation to manage anxiety and maintain a balanced perspective. Setting aside time each day for meditation helps me clear my mind and approach challenges with calmness and clarity. This practice is especially important as I navigate the pressures of being a student and working part-time.
A balanced diet and sufficient sleep are crucial for my mental wellness. I make an effort to eat nutritious foods and maintain a regular sleep schedule. Proper nutrition and rest support cognitive function and emotional stability, helping me stay alert and positive in my academic and personal life.
Maintaining strong connections with friends, family, and mentors is vital for my mental health. I stay in touch with my support network, which includes my close friends and family who understand the challenges I face. These relationships provide emotional support and a sense of belonging, helping me feel connected and less isolated.
Engaging in hobbies such as baking, photography, and volunteering is essential for my mental well-being. These activities offer a creative outlet and a sense of accomplishment, which contribute to my overall happiness. Volunteering at local animal shelters and offering free photography services to seniors are fulfilling ways for me to give back to my community.
I understand the importance of seeking professional support when needed. Whether through counseling or therapy, professional help provides valuable coping strategies and insights. I view seeking help as a strength and an important step in maintaining my mental wellness.
In summary, my mental health is vital for my overall success and well-being. By incorporating regular exercise, mindfulness, a healthy lifestyle, supportive relationships, engaging in hobbies, and seeking professional help, I strive to maintain a balanced and positive mental state. These practices enable me to manage academic and personal challenges effectively while pursuing my goals.

Community colleges and trade schools offer an essential, affordable pathway to higher education, especially for students from low-income backgrounds like me. Despite their more accessible costs compared to four-year universities, financial challenges such as tuition and textbook expenses can still be significant barriers.
As a first-generation student from Quincy, WA, with Mexican immigrant parents who worked as farm laborers, I have a deep understanding of financial constraints. My parents’ hard work instilled in me the value of education and the drive to overcome obstacles. To support my educational goals, I am currently working part-time to save money and plan to transfer to a four-year university to complete my finance degree.
With my finance education, I am committed to improving financial literacy within my community. I plan to teach essential concepts such as budgeting, investing, and retirement planning. Many people lack access to this knowledge, which can significantly impact their financial stability and future security. By equipping individuals with the skills to manage their finances effectively—such as understanding how to invest wisely and plan for retirement—I hope to empower them to make informed decisions that will benefit their long-term financial health.
Educating one more woman of color in finance can create a powerful domino effect. It would alleviate some of my financial burdens, allowing me to focus more on my studies, purchase essential textbooks, and manage the transition to a four-year university. This support will enable me to concentrate on achieving my academic goals and making a meaningful contribution to both my community and the field of finance.
By investing in my education, this scholarship will help me fulfill my aspirations and empower me to foster financial literacy, ultimately contributing to the economic well-being of my community and advancing diversity in finance.
I am deeply grateful for your consideration of my scholarship application. Your support is not only a financial boost but also a powerful statement in denouncing the stigma often associated with community colleges. By investing in students like me, you affirm the value of these institutions and their vital role in providing access to higher education. Thank you again for your consideration.

These experiences have equipped me with a strong sense of purpose and a commitment to making a meaningful impact in my community and beyond.
“The Office” Obsessed! Fan Scholarship
I’m 5'3", 19 years old, female, and Mexican, but regardless of all that, I will always resonate most with Michael Scott from “The Office”particularly the more developed version of him in the later seasons. Despite his many quirks and often misguided attempts at leadership, Michael embodies a genuine desire for connection and a relentless optimism that I find deeply relatable.
Michael can be selfish at times, but his moments of profound empathy reveal the depth of his character. His support for Pam’s art show, when he was the only one to attend, and his role as a father figure to Erin highlight his enormous heart. These instances demonstrate his capacity for genuine kindness and selflessness.
What’s truly surprising about Michael is his business acumen. Despite his often goofy exterior, he possesses a shrewd strategic mind. When he left Dunder Mifflin, his negotiation with David Wallace not only secured a lucrative deal but also demonstrated his surprising ability to navigate complex business situations and leverage his unconventional approach to achieve success.
I often find myself feeling neurotic and awkwardly hilarious like Michael. His journey from a bumbling boss to a more self-aware leader mirrors my own growth in understanding and empathy. “The Office” has profoundly shaped my sense of humor and perspective on workplace dynamics, teaching me to navigate challenges with humor and embrace diverse personalities. Michael’s evolution inspires me to accept my imperfections, strive for personal and professional growth, and value the connections we build along the way.
Nintendo Super Fan Scholarship
Growing up in a Y2K Mexican family, Nintendo games were more than just entertainment; they were a bonding ritual. My favorite game to play in co-op mode is “Super Mario Bros. Wii.” This choice is not just about the game’s engaging platforming but the shared experience it provided my family.
One standout memory is a particularly intense session during a family gathering. My cousin and I were navigating the chaotic levels of World 8. Our laughter echoed through the house as we frantically tried to avoid Bowser’s fiery attacks and navigate tricky jumps. The true highlight was when we reached the final level, and my cousin, in a moment of panic, accidentally threw me into a pit. Despite the mishap, our teamwork and the resulting laughter made it a cherished moment.
This experience solidified “Super Mario Bros. Wii” as my top choice because it encapsulated the essence of family togetherness, transforming frustration into fun and competition into camaraderie. The joy of overcoming challenges together and the bonds strengthened during these gaming sessions are irreplaceable, marking this game as a cornerstone of my childhood memories.
Thank you for your consideration for this scholarship. And letting me reminisce for a little bit.
Love Island Fan Scholarship
The “Love Labyrinth” is a fresh and engaging challenge for “Love Island,” designed to test couples' communication, problem-solving, and emotional connection. This challenge is divided into three interlinked phases: the Maze of Memories, the Synchronization Course, and the Trust Test.
In the Maze of Memories, each couple is placed in separate but identical mazes filled with symbolic items representing various relationship milestones (e.g., a picture of their first date, an item that reminds them of a shared experience). Each partner must navigate their maze, find these items, and describe their significance. After completing their mazes, the couple reunites and must discuss their memories, testing how well they understand and recall each other's experiences.
The Synchronization Course follows, where couples face a timed obstacle course requiring them to navigate through physical challenges while coordinating their movements. Success depends on their ability to work together smoothly and support each other under pressure.
Finally, in the Trust Test, one partner is blindfolded and must follow a series of verbal instructions from their partner to complete a series of tasks. This phase tests their ability to trust and communicate effectively.
The “Love Labyrinth” is designed to deepen emotional bonds and enhance communication skills, offering a compelling blend of reflection, teamwork, and trust for both participants and viewers.
Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Music has always been a sanctuary for me, but it was during a particularly tumultuous period in my senior year that Billie Eilish’s songs became a profound source of solace and self-discovery. Three tracks, “L’amour de ma vie,” “TV,” and “Happier Than Ever,” stand out for their ability to encapsulate my emotional journey through a difficult breakup and the aftermath of that experience.
**“L’amour de ma vie”** captures the essence of the fleeting yet intense nature of young love. The song's melancholic beauty and reflective lyrics resonate deeply with me, as they mirror the turbulence of my own brief, yet significant romantic relationship. During the breakup, Eilish’s poignant portrayal of love and loss provided a meaningful backdrop for my grief. The song’s tone allowed me to embrace the sadness, recognize the beauty in what I had experienced, and ultimately find a way to honor that chapter of my life.
In contrast, **“TV”** represents a different phase of my emotional journey. The track’s introspective and raw honesty about personal struggles and emotional turmoil parallels the reflective phase I entered after the breakup. The minimalist sound and poignant lyrics offered a space for deep introspection, enabling me to process and understand my feelings more clearly. Eilish’s exploration of internal conflict and her search for emotional clarity felt like a validation of my own experiences, helping me navigate through a period of self-doubt and confusion.
**“Happier Than Ever”** marks a transition from heartache to empowerment. The song’s dynamic shift from a somber ballad to an energetic anthem of self-realization resonates with my journey of moving on and reclaiming my identity. The cathartic release expressed in the latter part of the song reflects my own process of healing and growth. Eilish’s powerful performance underscores the themes of resilience and self-discovery, offering a sense of hope and renewal that was crucial in my recovery.
Billie Eilish’s music has been more than just a soundtrack to my experiences; it has been a guide through my emotional landscape. “L’amour de ma vie,” “TV,” and “Happier Than Ever” each capture different facets of my journey from heartbreak to healing, offering both comfort and inspiration. These songs not only articulate the complexities of my emotions but also provide a sense of connection and understanding that has been instrumental in my personal growth. Through Eilish’s music, I have found a voice for my own experiences and a reminder that even the most challenging moments can lead to profound self-discovery and renewal.

LeBron James has been more than just a basketball icon to me; he represents cherished moments with my dad. Growing up in our small town, watching LeBron’s games together was a special tradition. We would gather around the TV, excitedly cheering him on and debating his place among the all-time greats, often comparing him with Michael Jordan. These shared experiences not only deepened our bond but also taught me valuable lessons about dedication and perseverance.
What sets LeBron apart is not just his impressive basketball skills but also his profound impact off the court. His commitment to community service is truly inspiring. Through the LeBron James Family Foundation, he has provided scholarships, built the I PROMISE School for at-risk youth, and consistently given back to his hometown of Akron, Ohio. His efforts to improve the lives of others and address educational disparities highlight his dedication to making a positive difference beyond basketball.
In our debates about whether LeBron is the greatest of all time compared to players like Michael Jordan, my dad and I always emphasize not just their stats but their influence. LeBron’s leadership and philanthropy make a compelling case for his greatness, showcasing how he uses his platform to drive meaningful change.
