Having lived and experienced firsthand the problems within struggling communities regarding the criminal and civil justice systems, I intend to become a criminal/civil defense attorney. In the short term, I believe I will be able to extend my services to members of the community who need help in this direction and to serve the community at large. I will possibly also engage in criminal dispute resolutions and restoration programs to heal our communities. I do not believe every criminal or civil case must always be resolved through the court adversary system, because the adversary court system could sometimes damage the individuals in the process and the community at large. Certain cases are best resolved through a dispute resolution process and restoration to continue to keep the community together. I look forward to offering pro-bono services (free services) on special occasions to members of the community who may not be able to afford legal representation in pursuit or defense of justice. I would like to join other attorneys who are already making tremendous contributions to the community justice system through community and public/voluntary projects that assist community members in finding solutions to their legal problems The alternative dispute resolution and restoration programs that I have mentioned above are very high on my agenda. However, other programs such as alternatives to incarceration and criminal justice reforms are issues I intend to get involved in. My conviction is that these initiatives are very good as preventive measures to reduce if not eliminate the rate at which minor offenders are sent to prison when there could be alternative methods of deterrence, restoration and rehabilitation. More importantly, I have taken a keen interest in the innocence projects, and I believe no one should ever go to jail for a crime they have not committed or for a wrongful conviction, and I believe in this with passion. In the long term, it is my conviction is that I could start up community projects to assist the community in line with the issues I have discussed above. More importantly, being the first and only person in my family to have studied law coupled with the fact that I am from a large family with very low income, I believe my legal education will benefit both my immediate and distant family in various ways who happens to also be members of the community. I put service first in whatever I do, and I have learned to be compassionate and helpful toward others whenever I can. I would like to see in my community and country that every child of school going age have access to quality education and that crime is brought to its very minimum. Children are the future and the next generations and for that reason they matter most. Failing to provide accessible quality education to our children now means we are preparing them to fail in the future. On the other hand, providing them same means we are making a room for a better world tomorrow. Also, crime is very costly to every individual, families and the country at large. It destroys individuals, breaks families and cost the nation both resources and money. I would like to see my community and country free from crimes and where everyone feels safe and look out for each other. I like would like to volunteer either through education, advocating and campaign that will bring the community together to make an impact, and to make it a better place. There are a lot needs in the community and there is always one way or the other we could all make it a better place. At present, I do volunteer to offer free teaching and mentoring services to students outside the lecture hours within the college. I do help many who approach me with advice on choosing meaningful careers for themselves and pointing them to opportunities I believe they can make good use of in advancing their careers. Seeing others have their problems resolved and advance their careers and dreams brings me joy, thereby fulfilling some of my goals in life to seeing others succeed. Through research to teach them I learn a lot on the way. I believe volunteering is one of the best ways to give back to the community by connecting with the community and providing free or subsidized help. Volunteering could help me make new friends and contacts as a student by way of we people of common interest coming together for a good cause and to make our community better. This could help strengthen my ties and network within the community, and expose me to useful resources and fulfilling activities. I also believe volunteering will enhance and improve on my relationship and social skills, so that I know how to work with people towards achieving a common goal. In addition, it will me improve on my self-confidence; working with people, solving problems within the community and public speaking could be some of the best ways to build self-confidence and I believe this is what I could gain in volunteering. Not all, volunteering could help me stay both physically and mentally healthy. Being active in giving back to the community will keep me active and the good feeling helping other people overcome their difficulties brings that good feeling and healthy mindset Volunteering is also a sure way to advance my career and learn new skills and experience either through learning a new legal practice skills or learning new communication skills which will be useful to my career and the people I serve. Over the past year, I experienced tremendous growth in my teaching profession as a law lecturer. I attribute this growth to the fact that I have continued to learn either through books or participation in short training programs organised by professional bodies over the Internet from other parts of the globe by way of webinars. This has improved my content knowledge of the subjects I teach. I have also learned so much within the classroom by allowing open discussions. My students come from different professional backgrounds and such open discussion gives them the chance to contribute from their perspectives and the knowledge they have acquired over the years. As such, I have had the opportunity to learn from them and improve upon what I know. I am a better person now than I was before in classroom management and content delivery. What has not changed is my professional status. My desire to become a qualified lawyer has not been realised yet due to a lack of funds to finance my law school course to become a lawyer.
